PORSCHE PARADE After much anticipation and many houra of ~lecple~ night~, it w~¢ ~t long last time for the Parade! Joyoe, dad, Tom Chang, Jon Mit~uuchi and I had spent many hours getting ready for this event. Tuesday was here already and w~ had planned to leave tonight. Although many thing~ were ~till not finished and we had yet to undo some errors made the previous night, the car at least was back together again, Night had come and we were exhausted. After two quick meetings, we decided to get a few hours of sleep and then get an early start in the morning. I slept well since I had been averaging about 2 to 3 hours of sleep for the past two weeks. But morning came too fast.

Since we had loaded up the night before all that was required was getting into the van and going, We had planned on being in Texas by Friday afternoon stopping first in Tucson then El Paso and finally arriving in Dallas. The trip was very pleasanL though the scenery was boring. By four we were in Tucson, so we decided to go a little farther. Just outside of Tucson we heard a familiar sound, one that Joyce and I had heard on our way home from Portland, Maine. That sound was a blown hose from our air conditioner. We hoped it wasn’t true but a few miles down the road proved our intuition correct. No Air Conditioner and boy, was it hot outside!

We drove about 100 miles further and decided it might be wise to ddve as far as we could during the night and avoid as much of the heat as possible. Along about one in the morning we were all exhausted, heat having taken its toll. Van Horn, Texas would be where we would spend the night and start again in the morning. Before retiring we decided that we would get up at 6:00 a.m. and start up again.

Six o’clock and we were on our way, another day of driving.

At least today we would reach our destination, Dallas. We arrived in Dallas about five without any major incidents. After checking into our rooms, we then went down to see about the concour prep areas. Headquarters for this year’s parade was the Hyatt Regency at Dallas/Fort Worth Airport. The Hyatt was a twin tower complex divided by the major airporl access highway. We chose to be in the East Tower since the underground covered prep garage was located adjacent to the East Tower. However we had to unload our car in the west parking lot and drive about one and a half miles to the east lot. Surprisingly enough there were several other people already there, many who were already working on their cars. We were the first car in the garage. We decided to eat and then come back to our work. We decided to get the car up on the stands and take the wheels up to the room.

The garage was poor y lit; however, it was out from under the sun and protected against thunderstorms.

Friday was our first full day in Dallas, a day which we had planned to spend working on our car. Since we needed some supplies and lights, Joyce and Jon headed tothelocal hardware store to gather up things we had forgotten. All day Friday, Saturday and Sunday were allotted to working on the car preparing it for Monday’s Concour. We worked continuously through the day and all Sunday and Morning morning except for an occasional slop at the goodie store and Saturday nite’s Foudh of July dinner, The Goodies store is always Joyce’s and my weak spot. We never seem ~o ue able to come away form it without buying

Monday morning came around sooner than we had expected. It w~ four a.m and we had not even had a chanoe to get ~ome sleep or take ~ shower so we decided to quit and take a few minutes to get cleaned up before going off to the concour site. Placement of cars started at 6:30 with judging promptly at 7:30. However, at 6:00 there was already a line to get into the Bear Creek Golf Course, which was the perfect setting for this year’s concour. Situated on the fairway of one of the holes there was a lot of space to place cars, We were placed about 7:00 leaving not much time to do our finaltouches. 7:30 came around like 5 minutes and we were asked to stop all cleaning and from this point there was to be light dusting only.

As were waiting for the judges to come around, we noticed a spot on the driver’s door. To our shock and extreme disappointment, a "blend" was appearing to get worse as the sun hit the car.

Unfortunately, there was nothing we could do but just stare at the spot. What a sickening feeling in our stomach to see this after the hours and days spent in preparing this car.

Well, this is supposed to be fun, right? Putting our disappointment aside we went over to our division winners... John and Kim Tolen. They are good friends of ours and we were happy for them. At least it was still a Zone 8 winner.

Concour Day was sponsored by Porsche Cars of North America. Results came out around 12:00--Division 1 Winner, Rober~ Lawson, Monterey Bay Region, 1963 356B super 90 Coupe; Division 2 Winner, Kent Early, Rocky Mountain Region, 197I 911 T; Division 3 Winner, John Tolen, Orange Coast Region, 1974 Carrera; Division 4 Winner, Pat Scanlon, San Diego Region, 1984 Carrera; Division 5, Winner, Charles Layton, Ozark Lakes Region, 1976 914; Division 6 Winner and Manhattan Winner, Tom Scott, Rocky Mountain Region, 1977 924: Division 7 Winner Craig Heinrich, North New Jersey Region, 1985 944 and Division 8 Winner, Peoples Choice and Judges Choice, Ray Knight Kentucky Region 1951 356B Roadster. At the awards banquet all 8 cars were lined around the room for all to see.

Tuesday, the event scheduled was the rally. About 150 cars were entered. The course was about 100 miles long and took all the cars around Dallas and the surrounding countryside.

On Wednesday the time trials and driving events started at Trader’s Village and The Tech quiz was given. Wednesday night we were all bussed out to a Ranch north of the Airport for a real Texas barbecue.

On Thursday, Joyce and I went on a tour of Dallas and the surrounding area. We started at the hotel and went through Turtle Creek, Dallas, visited the Kennedy Assassination Site, lunched in the old town area of Dallas and ended at Neiman Marcus (Needless Markups). Joyce certainly enjoyed it!

On Thursday night we all decided that we should drive home through the night, since we didn’t have air conditioning.

Hope to see you in Colorado Springs. Joyce and I will be there one more time with the Carrera. Maybe in 1988 there will be a Manhattan in Los Angeles. ¯ Kirk Shimazu

Contingency fees are criticized in the initiative as a cause of unmeritorious claims being made. Attorneys are also criticized for gouging unfair proportions of their clients’ claims.

For this discussion, claims should be divided into two catagories.

The first catagory is the soft tissue injury case. The other is the severe injury case which would include permanent injuries, scarring or broken bones.

Soft tissue injuries generally are not permanent. They can be long lasting or they may clear up in a few weeks. These are injuries such as strains and sprains, often to the back. Long lasting cases or cases requiring surgery would belong in class two. The cases I refer to here generally resolve with physical therapy treatments of massage, heat and exercise. An average case will take 15 to 30 treatments at a cost of $60-$80 per

Under the circumstances of either type of injury, is it likely that an attorney will knowingly or willingly pursue an unmeritorious case?

Reducing attorney fees is not going to reduce lawsuits. The unmeritorious cases are almost never taken now. The only thing that would be influenced are those cases in which there are valid disputes .. the case when you know you are in the right but the other party tells a different story. If attorneys are discouraged from taking all but the open-and-shut cases, legitimate disputes are the only cases that will be discouraged. Are you ready to give that
