KEN BALLARD: OUR UNSUNG HERO This month we decided to let you in on the real secret to the success of PORSCHERAMA. Oh yeah, we write articles, and collect ads, and run around gathering info for upcoming events, but if it weren’t for Ken Ballard, you’d still be reading all this on three mimeographed sheets of paper, stapled in the corner.

Ken has been mentioned on this page before (remember the article about how he designed the graphics for Connie and Judd’s racing machine). Well cars aren’t the only thing he makes beautiful, although he has 3 of his own to play with, including a white 911 that he time trials, and a getting-to-bebeautiful Roadster, and a Cobra that he and a friend show at concours events.

Ken is one of those lucky people who earn a living doing something they really enjoy.

Ken is the head of Ballard Graphics, a Westwood design firm. He designs everything from annual reports for big corporations to packaging for a new cookie. He is currently working with an Alaskan firm, designing their logo. And speaking of logos, Ken is also proud of the logo he created for his wife’s Santa Monica store, INCOGNITO. Ken’s ideas also get translated into bigger projects. He and his brother have built two beautiful homes in Malibu, one of which is for sale.

If you’re in the market, we can definitely recommend these guys.

Knowing that Ken had all this talent, and a lot of enthusiasm for PCA-LA, we asked him to help us when we first decided to try a new concept for PORSCHERAMA. The logo and layout are the result of Ken’s creativity. Once we settled these basic issues, we conned him into helping us put the paper together. Every month he has been there, solving our problems, making suggestions, and teaching us new tricks.

We feel very lucky to have such a good friend and helper. He’s talented and enthusiastic, and we’ve had a ball working with him this past year. Thanks Ken. ConnieLark’nAnn

PCA-LA is a "region" of Porsche Club of America, the largest one marque non-factory club in the world, On a national level, PCA publishes an excellent monthly magazine PORSCHE PANORAMA and generally provides a forum for learning. But the club part is local. Hello again. The "Wanted" poster worked.

I was found hiding out in Bodie, CA making occasional jaunts to The Hole on the East Walker River. So much for trivia. In recapping the last few months the Peter Gregg Memorial Challenge Cbp in September was fantastic. The array of vehicles provided by the entries from the Ferrari and Pantera Clubs made the weekend. We are planning the 2nd annual PGMCC for next April. Try to make it, you’ll really enjoy it. Thanks to Rick Jackson for a great event. The September membership meeting/barbeque at Don Ricardo’s home was super. Good friends, good food, beautiful cars to view and great hospitality from the Ricardos. Thanks to all who helped on that day especially to my co-chef Bob Houseman and rallymaster John Williamson.

October saw us back at Riverside for our annual Zone 8 Time Trial. A good weekend enjoyed by all in spite of the small amount of rain Saturday night and Sunday morning, Congratulations to Steve Michaelson and Bob Douglass for turning in the Fast Time of the Day for POC and PCA respectively and thanks to all who helped to make it a successful event-Len Cushman, Jack DiRosario, Jon Winthrop, Sam Wang, Ken Becker, Lee and Tony Burton, Jerry and Sara Pennington, Bill LeFlang, Karen Zimmermann and everyone else. Our October membership meeting saw us back at the Yacht Club with Pete Smith as our guest speaker. Pete gave us an interesting talk about his involvement with Porsches followed by a slide show of his winning efforts at Sebring this year in the GTO Carrera with Chuck Kendall and Dennis Aase (see 5/81 Panorama). After the entertainment was over we asked those who remained for nominations for next year’s open board positions -- we received no nominations, The slate stands as follows: Vice President, John Fels; Treasurer, Brent Morrow; Technical, John Williamson. We on the Board of Directors feel that this has been a very good year for PCA-LA. We are going to try to improve on it for next year but we’ll need your help to do so. cont. on pg 9

If you think the November issue of PORSCHEP~AMA looks different - you’re right -- no type set, fewer pictures and it’s missing the "Ballard touch". The first two are attempts to reduce the cost of the newsletter -- the last because our hero is out of town on an assignment, much to our sorrow...

As usual the October issue had it’s share of errors, but they all seemed to surround the material submitted by Lee Burton and we want to apologize for that. Lee’s name was omitted from his article on the time trial series (not to mention the misspelled words in his wanted ad). Lee has done a super job this year keeping us informed on the Zone 8 Time Trial Series.

Thanks Lee, we hope you’ll forgive our oversights.

Time Trialing is super fun~ If you haven’t tried it, you really haven’t experienced what Porsches are all about.

The preparation, the planning, the anxiety, the fulfillment and the accomplishment are just a few of the emotions we go through.

For those men and women who have not tried time trialing, let me assure you that it is safe if you approach it like any other new sport.

Like any sport, there are risks, but with proper training and preparation these risks can be minimized.

To the novice, I would suggest starting your adventure by entering a parking lot slalom (PCA-LA is having one on November 22, or you can check "Pit Stops" in the Times).

For a slalom, you need do nothing to your car, except check the oil level, tire pressure (it’s recommended you carry about 5-8 Ibs. extra in the tires), and remove anything that is loose in the car.

Your factory installed seat belt is sufficient, and if you do not have a driving helmet, there are loaners at the event.

The slalom is a marvelous way to get to know how your car responds and the demands it can make on you.

You’ll learn how your car "feels" as you put more demands on it than you ever have before, Slaloms are generally marked out in large parking lots with no obstructions; the lanes you drive in are marked by rubber pylons, so if you have an off-course "excursion" you won’t damage your car.

The best of drivers spin in slaloms because they are trying to push their cars to the limit, and how can you know your limit unless you push?

In almost all instances, you..can be assured that the car will outperform the driver, as not many of us are experienced enough to let it hang out all the way.

Preparing for a time trial is a little different than a slalom.

How you prepare depends on your involvement, but you will have to go through some basic procedures.

First is "tech" inspection of your car.

You’ll be asked to take your car to a central place, usually a Porsche repair shop, where your car will be given a complete physical.

The only things you will have to install in your car are a 4 B.C. rated fire extinguisher, and 3" wide competition seat belts with shoulder harnesses.

The areas that will be checked on your car, for your safety and the safety of others who will be on the track with you, are the engine compartment--checking for leaks, carb, return springs, etc.--wheels and tires, body area to see that everything works and fits, the interior of the car, and the suspension--including an examination of the brake area, wheel bearings, shocks, etc.

Not unlike going to a doctor for a physical, often times things are found out about your car that you probably weren’t aware of and that can be easily corrected.

At the tech inspection, after your car has been examined (and, hopefully for you, passed), you can relax and get into bench racing.

This is the time when some of the biggest lies and most outrageous stories are tossed out by the pretenders to Mario Andretti’s world driving title.

This is a time to get acquainted with the other novices and with the old timers who you’ll be playing with soon on tracks like Riverside, Laguna Seca, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and elsewhere.

Next month we’ll get into a little more advanced time trialing and what to do at the track to have a safe, fun weekend.

At all events, whether slaloms or time"~~(~/~1-trials at major tracks, expert driving instructors are there to show you the fastest and safest way around the course.

Generally, the instructor will first drive your car with you as passenger; then you will trade places, with the instructor giving you suggestions.

When you feel comfortable enough to try it on your own, it’s all yours.

For the first time a Porsche has won the New York to San Francisco run formerly called the Cannonball Express, This years winning car was driven by PCAer David Morris, The winning time was a relatively slow 38 hours I0 minutes due to severe weather conditions, The Morris entry was able to get through Donner Pass which was closed to all expect those equipped with chains, Congratulations David and thanks for the phone call, We’re looking forward to an article about the adventure.

THE TECHNICAL PUMPKIN OCTOBER TECH MEETING Thirty-one hearty souls turned out for the TechMeeting on Wednesday October 21 (World Series and chilly weather couldn’t keep them away).

Among those present were two out of state visitors Paul and Carl Hacker.

Paul and Carl are currently leaders in the point standing in the Rabbit Bilstein Series..

Two of the four Hacker team cars were there.

The tech session on Weber carbs was presented

by Bob Fern (Porschop) and Richard Parr (Porsche Mailorder).

Richard brought numerous carbs and manifolds for inspection and discussion.

Bob presented numerous technical tips and pertinent information relating to Webers and both Richard and Bob answered questions posed by a very interested group.

A special thanks to Bob and Richard for sharing their time and knowledge with us.

For those less interested in carbs, a Pumpkin Carving Contest was held.

Two class - Porsche related and Jack oLantern were won by Lark Nakazaki and Carl Hacker.

Second place went to Ginny Bartelle and Coralee Ellison.

Refreshments and socializing capped off an enjoyable evening.

Wednesday Nov. 4 will again be PCA-LA’s Board of Directors’ meeting at John Fels’ home. Last month’s meeting produced many interesting new ideas--it was refreshing to have some new faces and new inputs. We’ll be planning the 1982 PCA-LA and Zone 8 calendars, and of course, we’ll be thinking more about our 1984 Olympic Parade proposal, Anyone want to buy the Queen Mary so we can be sure it’ll be there in 1984?

Porsche Owners~ Club will put on the last opportunity of 1981 to drive at Riverside Raceway.

I don’t have their flyer info yet, but I’m sure they’ll be using a different course layout for the sake of variety It’ll be the finale for the POC competition series so it should be a real barn-burner.

The last weekend of November will be the Tahoe-Reno-Harrah’s Auto Museum tour. Some of us will be leaving on Thursday, Thanksgiving Day, while others will probably caravan north on Friday. We’ll tour Harrah’s Museum on Sat. (don’t forget, this magnificent c~llection will be broken up next year; this will certainly be the last opportunity to see the whole thing), and return on Sunday. Our quarterly New Member Meeting will be held Wednesday Nov. 11 at the Yacht Club.

As usual, Membership Chairman Bob Housman will dazzle and delight us.

Eight days later, on Thursday Nov. 19, we’ll have PCA-LA’s regular membership meeting. Entertainment for the evening will be a lecture by a rep from Bell Helmets.

On Sunday Nov. 22 we’ll be doing a charity event.

PCA-LA, in conjunction with Pet Orphans, will be organizing an all-makes slalom (SCCA-style) at the Rose Bowl. This event will require a fair number of workers (and of course, participants) from PCA-LA. All profits will be donated to the care and support of orphaned pets. Please see the flyer on this event,

The 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix has gotten a new look. Gone are the "Queen’s Hairpin" and the Pine Avenue "esses". Now open in the defunct Pi~e section is a whole new course. PCA has grabbed as our new section - Grandstand 2. At this point we’ll be able to view the cars exiting turn 2 (the Queen’s Chicane) into 3 and into 4, all extremely difficult and exciting turns. RALLY TO THE SUMMIT II I was a little reluctant to get up early on a Saturday morning for a rally in Riverside, but it turned out to be a beautiful October day.

I was suprised at the small turn out for this rally (about 9 cars).

It was a very well put together rally and some very beautiful scenery along the way up the mountains thru Blue Jay and Arrowhead.

A few cars were lost before lunch break, but all except one turned up at the end.

With the exception of a few confusing traps everyone had a good time, and pizza and refreshments, along with some very nice trophies furnished at the end by Summit Porsche-Audi.
