Advancing the Mission

Dear Friends,

The dramatic transition to springtime is seen on campus with the greening grass, budding trees, and student-athletes abound, competing in lacrosse, softball, tennis, track and field, and baseball. At the same time, our senior Class of 2023 is wrapping up their time with us and preparing for their transition to college. As soon-to-be graduates of Pope Francis Preparatory School, we celebrate their final weeks by reflecting on how far they have come and by looking forward to all they will achieve in the years to come.

As a private, Catholic school, we have so much to be proud of and so much to be grateful for. The work to advance our mission involves all departments and constituents of the school and our successes are evidenced in many ways. In this school year alone, we have so much to celebrate. Champions were crowned in girls soccer as Western Mass champs, boys basketball as Western Mass champs, boys hockey as Division 1 State champs, and new school records were set for individual athletes in soccer, basketball and track. Girls volleyball was added as a fall sport. The Cardinal Coders robotics team competed and placed very well in their inaugural year against high schools throughout the state.

Our mission advances by investing in our facility, technology, and faculty. With a full incoming freshmen class, our consistent enrollment growth will be supported in the fall by the addition of four new classrooms. These rooms are presently being equipped with the most current teaching technology available.

Strategic efforts have been in place to increase teacher salaries and enhance retirement benefits. As a result, our students are blessed by the consistency and retention of our talented and inspiring faculty and staff members. A team from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges visited in the fall and validated the hard work and dedication of the Pope community by granting full accreditation for a multiyear term.

With our faith at the center of all that we do at Pope Francis Prep, our mission is advanced and enhanced through opportunities like morning Mass twice a week, confession weekly, adoration often, in-school preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, and our commitment to serve one another. This commitment to one another extends beyond campus. Daily, I witness the generosity of our parents, grandparents, alumni, board members, and friends who share their gifts of time, expertise, and financial support with our school. The incredible

participation and the results of this year’s Day of Giving confirms that the future is bright at Pope Francis Prep!

Whether you were on campus today, last month, or it has been a while, I invite you to come and see us soon. Know that we keep our Pope families and friends in our prayers and I ask that you keep all of us in your prayers.

Best,

LETTER FROM HEAD OF SCHOOL

Working alongside Mrs. D'Amour was always a pleasure. Her determination for Pope Francis Prep's success was palpable. I always felt that Michele's belief in our mission guided her decisions as board chair. I am grateful for her mentorship and consider her a close friend.”

A STRONG FOUNDATION

Pope Francis Preparatory School is a Catholic co-educational, college-preparatory school which instills Gospel values and fosters academic excellence in a diverse community of learners. Our mission is to challenge students to grow spiritually, intellectually, socially, and physically to become critical thinkers and faith-based leaders who embody justice, peace, service, and mercy in the global community.

TODAY, IT IS EASY TO WALK THE HALLS of Pope Francis Prep and see our mission alive and executed in daily activities and celebrated in the successes of the entire school community. The vision for what Pope Francis Prep would one day become was not always easy. It began with careful, strategic planning well before stepping foot on Wendover Road.

It is incredible to reflect back on the emergence of Pope Francis Prep in 2016.

The process for the development of a regional Catholic high school was put into action by then Bishop, Mitchell T. Rozanski. Bishop Rozanski recruited a dedicated group of parents, alumni, and friends to form a founding board of directors.

The board of directors is the governing body of the school and provides general oversight of business and financial matters. The board also

appoints and supports the Head of School who, in return, leads and manages the school’s strategic plans and daily operations. In consultation with the Head, the board provides vital policy leadership and oversight in critical areas like academics, student life, parental involvement, faith life, budgeting, finance, operations and advancement, achievement of mission, achievement of strategic plan, and Board effectiveness.

Board members are long-term planners from diverse personal and professional backgrounds and offer their knowledge and experience as well as financial support to help ensure the success of the school and its mission.

Since its formation, Pope Francis Prep has been fortunate to have an exceptionally gifted and dedicated group of present and past board members. Leading the PFPS board for its first

seven years was board chair Michele D’Amour. Mrs. D’Amour is an alumnus of Cathedral High School and a longtime supporter of Catholic education in Springfield. Further, Michele and her husband, Donald, are arguably one of the most philanthropic couples from Western Mass, supporting the arts, health care, education, and several nonprofit organizations near and far.

Reflecting on her time as founding

board chair, Michele shared, “frankly, I was hesitant to take on the role as chair. I felt passionate about the importance of someone being placed in the role who, not only could give 150% to the job, but also was armed with a variety of work experiences and skill sets that would be needed in navigating the diverse issues that we would have to deal with establishing a “quality product”; a product that was a strong, faith-filled

CARDINAL | SPRING 2023 3 BOARD OF DIRECTORS

school where parents would want to send their children. I was not at all sure I was the right person for the job as I felt that I lacked some of the expertise needed, especially in those early days. Bishop Mitch was persistent in his determination that I was the person for the job. So, I kept praying for a clear answer as to whether or not I should take the job. I am not sure I really got a “clear” answer but eventually, I agreed to serve and told the Bishop that I hoped he wouldn’t be sorry! Once I made the commitment, I didn’t know how we would succeed but I was determined that failure was not an option.”

Mrs. D’Amour’s persistence was a key ingredient to take on the challenges of creating a new school. Michele shared that there were two important pieces critical to the school’s success. First, she

believed it was imperative for the five founding board members to develop a strong board dedicated to the mission of a Catholic high school, and that they fully understand the responsibility of the new governance structure. Second, Mrs. D’Amour spoke about the importance of identifying the right person to serve as the first head of school. Mrs. D’Amour shared that, “once we overcame these two hurdles, we were then able to address other varied and complex issues to get up and running, be it board best practices, finances, mission, staffing, curriculum, enrollment, marketing, etc.”

Upon completing her tenure on the board, Mrs. D’Amour reflected on some of her favorite memories as chair. Her list includes a few major milestone moments, including the ribbon cutting ceremony in 2018 and the first commencement

ceremony on the Alumni Plaza. Michele also reflected on the smaller, yet valuable moments and challenges that have advanced Pope to the present, sharing, “for me, I have taken with me many quieter memories that have enriched my life, like a bishop who saw the need and worked doggedly to see this school happen and was a constant cheerleader and advisor throughout those first few years. I was blessed with a dedicated board who worked hard as a cohesive team. We were blessed to have an energetic and dedicated head of school who, with the commitment of his team, has brought us where we are today. We were blessed with students, who, in their resilience and kindness, shone bright through the bumpy roads of the creation of a new school and through a pandemic. Those are the memories that will stay with me forever.”

True examples of walking the walk, Michele and Donald have shared their time, talents, and treasure to the benefit of the entire Pope Francis Prep community. Finally, reflecting on where Catholic secondary education stood in Western Massachusetts a dozen years ago, to the past seven years as board chair, to the future of the school, Mrs. D’Amour says, “We exceeded our own expectations in the few years Pope Francis has been open. We are filled to the brim with young women and men who recognize the quality, faithbased education they are receiving at PFPS. It is my hope that young people and their families continue to see this high-quality education as a significant advantage and life changing. I wish for Pope Francis Prep to always be filled with dedicated and talented people on the board, in the administration and in the classrooms. It is our responsibility to fulfill the mission of the school and continue to educate the minds and souls of those who enter our doors.”

The Aquinas Chapter of the NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTED 42 NEW MEMBERS on December 6. There are currently 138 members in total. The keynote speaker was Sister Eileen Sullivan, SSJ who spoke to the students about the importance of service, one of the four pillars of the NHS. As part of meeting the ideals of this pillar, second and third year members developed their Individual Service Plans at the beginning of the school year, for which the students must serve the community with a minimum of twenty hours.

Mrs. Bauduccio’s INTRODUCTION TO PSYCHOLOGY students explored biopsychology with a specific concentration on the brain. Students had fun with a “build a brain” project where they had to work in groups to create the right and left hemispheres.

The MUSIC DEPARTMENT presented an exciting and fast-paced concert of energetic music and holiday favorites. Forty-nine Pope student musicians performed, featuring the following classes and after school ensembles: Chorus, Band, Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Choir, Jazz Band, Rock Pop & More, and Full Band/Orchestra. Some highlights included fantastic studentchoreography, Percussion Ensemble pieces that featured xylophone, bells and keyboards, the premiere performances of our full band/ orchestra playing Queen songs, our newly formed Rock, Pop & More group, and a grand finale which combined all musicians to play and sing Jingle Bell Rock.

“Vestis virum facit” (“Clothing makes the man”) is an old Latin proverb. LATIN 1 STUDENTS studied Roman clothing and the way it communicated and reinforced the structure of ancient Rome’s highly militarized, slave owning, patriarchal world. Small groups of students created a “Roman fashion ad,” with a picture and accompanying text intended to sell the clothing and its social message.

PATHWAYS Futures Form Here

The students of today will become the working professionals and leaders of tomorrow. With this in mind, Pope Francis Preparatory School created the Academic Pathways program in 2019 with the mission of helping students explore careers and confidently choose college majors by providing hands-on career exploration.

Led by social studies department chair, Mrs. Leslie Perreault, Pathways kicked off the 2022-2023 school year with a workshop from MassMutual representatives Melissa McDonough P’24, Compliance Consultant (Financial Crimes and Fraud Prevention) and Sam Bauduccio P’26, Head of IT Portfolio Management (Digital Strategy) who presented on resume and brand building and the importance of networking.

Students at PFPS are invited to join the Pathways program beginning in their sophomore year. One of the students attending the kickoff event was Francesca Hernandez ’25. Francesca shared, “I decided to join Pathways because I like to be prepared, especially regarding my future. I’ve wanted to be a lawyer for many years and I knew the program would help

me see if that’s truly the career I want to pursue.” Francesca is excited to explore civic engagement and enjoyed a recent field trip to the high court in Springfield, where, “we met with Justice Edward McDonough ’73, P’24 and sat in on multiple cases ranging from narcotics to involuntary manslaughter. Witnessing how the lawyers defended their point and its effect on the jury and the judge was incredible. It furthered my drive to be an attorney and my desire to try and give everyone the justice they deserve,” she said.

HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE

Recently, a group of Pathways students interested in health sciences visited the STCC Stimulation Labs. Julia Dennis ’23 shares that “visiting the STCC Stimulation Labs has by far been the most engaging tour of a college I have ever had. We were

able to work hands-on with the robot simulation patients by taking their pulses, measuring their breathing, and doing minor procedures. Additionally, we were given the opportunity to use Virtual Reality tools for learning.”

CONNECTIONS

We recently caught up with Elizabeth Goncalves ’22 who is a sophomore at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. Liz is earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering and planning to pursue her Master’s Degree in Management in the five-year BS/MS program. Reflecting on her time in Pathways at Pope, Liz shared, “The Pathways Program allowed me to make some important connections. One of the major contributors to finding connections was through the LinkedIn

account I created while in the Pathways Program. LinkedIn was instrumental in securing my summer internship last year. One of the greatest lessons I learned from Pathways was to apply to as many internships or job opportunities as you can, even if you aren’t sure you are qualified for all of them. At the end of my first year at WPI, I must have applied for over ten internships, and only received an interview opportunity from one of them. That one interview led me to obtain my internship last summer at Atlas in West Springfield, MA. This internship was a great experience because even though it had little to do with engineering, it was a great opportunity for me to discover my strengths and abilities in the workplace. Atlas allowed me to explore the environmental impact of underground storage tank leaks, as well as the precautions that must be followed to prevent these leaks. I really enjoyed my time at Atlas and the research I contributed to helped me realize that I see myself going into a materials concentration of chemical engineering versus an environmental concentration.”

Liz continued, “Last year I also applied for an internship at Callaway. Unfortunately, Callaway was not able to offer me an internship opportunity last summer. However, after I concluded my internship at Atlas, a recruiter from Callaway reached out to me regarding my application from last year and was wondering if an interview could be scheduled for an internship for the following summer. After three rounds of interviews, they offered me the position of being a product engineering intern. I am beyond excited to have my first hands-on engineering and manufacturing internship in the summer of 2023. I keep my LinkedIn profile updated regularly. This is a great digital resume for me in addition to a

traditional resume that I take to career fairs and job opportunities.”

MENTORSHIP

Elizabeth Gonet ’22 is currently a student at Isenberg School of Management at UMass Amherst. Through Pathways, Lizzie was able to develop a relationship with Attorney Katie McDonough, from Egan, Flanagan & Cohen who was her email mentor. Lizzie shares, “the Pathways Program helped me learn more about my desired career in the legal field and learn from those in the field. As a full time high school student with an interest in law school, the Pathways Program gave me an opportunity to explore that career. While taking two virtual high school law courses, I gained interest in the legal field and decided I wanted to pursue this as my career. Ever since, I have worked hard to gain as much experience as possible.

A few months ago I reconnected with Attorney McDonough and she offered to help me with my interest in going to law school and getting office experience. While remaining a full time student at UMass, I work for Attorney McDonough as a

part-time administrative assistant handling corporate governance and estate planning matters. As a college student aspiring to attend law school, I have gained realworld experience in the legal field. I am grateful to the Pope Francis Preparatory School Pathways Program and Attorney McDonough for helping me with my future endeavors.”

Pathways currently has 41 participants who have attended workshops, career specific field trips, shadowed professionals, and even participated in “Wish I Had Known” Zoom sessions with working professionals who share advice in specific careers. In many ways, Mrs. Perreault serves as a career matchmaker, meeting with her students to discover their interests, passions, and goals and matching them with working professionals in hopes of finding each of them the perfect college major and future career. If you are an alum, parent, or friend of Pope Francis Prep interested in working with our students in the Pathways Program, please contact Mrs. Leslie Perreault at lperreault@popefrancisprep.org.

TOGETHER

Our annual ALL-SCHOOL SERVICE DAY was held on November 4. Students, faculty, and staff spent the morning flagging veteran gravesites at St. Michael’s and Gate of Heaven Cemeteries, helping clean the community garden at Holy Name Parish, tending to leaves and yard work of neighbors and veterans living in our East Forest Park neighborhood, volunteering at St. Michael’s Academy, working on an art project for veterans and tidying up at Dryden School and around our own campus. A very busy but rewarding morning for all.

GROWING IN our Faith

We are always proud to share and celebrate what makes our school community so special. The Pope Francis Prep community celebrated CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK with a focus on the value of a Catholic education and its contributions to our families, our faith, and our community. The week kicked off with students attending open houses at St. Mary’s Academy and St. Michael’s Academy and sharing their experiences as PFPS students. On Tuesday, we came together as a community to celebrate Mass and on Friday we hosted a vocations panel where speakers shared their personal stories about being called to their vocation and some of their experiences since. A sincere thank you to Bishop Byrne, Fr. Jon, Fr. Pierz, Fr. Sliwa, Sr. Joan Clare, SCMC, Sr. Faustina, SCMC, Sr. Faith Marie, FSE, and Sr. Francis, FSE.

We celebrated the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the BLESSED VIRGIN MARY with a special Mass. Thank you to Fr. Jon, the Christian Leadership team, and the Liturgical Choir for a beautiful Mass.

On January 5, we honored the life and legacy of POPE EMERITUS BENEDICT XVI, Joseph A. Ratzinger. Fr. Jon offered a Requiem Mass for the late Pope and was accompanied with traditional Latin chant, masterfully led by Mr. Silbereis. In his homily, Fr. Jon spoke of the virtues of the late Pontiff. Pope Benedict XVI was a man of disciplined prayer, a man of warmth and joy which came from his deep love for Jesus Christ and His Church, he was a man of generosity having given his life to the Church for 71 years as a priest, 8 of which he served as Supreme Pontiff, and finally he was a man of Truth. He taught us by his books, homilies, speeches, articles and his simple, humble life on the Truth of our Catholic Faith, on who Jesus is and how to live this Truth in charity. This is his legacy. Rest in Peace, Your Holiness, may your good deeds be rewarded by the God whom you so faithfully served. Mr. Silbereis concluded the Mass by playing the Vatican City Anthem on the piano.

Every year, the PFPS sophomore class comes together to watch THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST. Mr. Dewey’s sophomores spent five class days preparing. They read and discussed an appropriate Scripture passage, did an academic activity and prayed the corresponding decade of the rosary to conclude the class.

ST. BLAISE was a 4th century Bishop in Armenia. While in prison for being a Christian, he healed a young boy who was choking on a fish bone. From that time on he became associated with healing diseases of the throat. On his feast day, the Church offers the traditional “Blessing of Throats” in his honor.

Our THANKSGIVING MASS was celebrated on November 17. We were blessed to have Fr. CJ from St. Mary’s Parish in Longmeadow as our celebrant for this special Mass. Father CJ spoke about the importance of being thankful for the many blessings in our lives and also encouraged our students to always be themselves.

CARDINALS MAKE HISTORY! Boys Hockey Crowned D1 State Champs

Our Cardinals are very familiar with playoff hockey and the TD Garden. They have been there before and have been close, painfully close, to winning a state championship.

THE 2018 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME resulted in an overtime loss to BC High and the 2019 game resulted in the longest MIAA playoff hockey game in history and a four overtime loss to the Eagles once again. In 2020, Coach Brian Foley and a very talented team were again headed to the championship game. Set to play against Arlington, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the game was canceled just 3 days before it was to be played. The magical season abruptly ended with a co-champion title.

Three years later, another historic run allowed our boys hockey team to once again play in the championship

game. It was by no means an easy road to get there as our Cardinals won three consecutive postseason games by a one goal margin. These victories were the result of a fearless and tenacious team, supported by sophomore goalie, Nick Ritchie, who kept the Cardinals in the game.

On March 18, we put our championship game history behind us, said our prayers, and packed up bus loads of students, family, and friends to head back to Boston. Following almost three full periods of intense play with a tied game, fearing a return to overtime, senior captain Josh Iby scored the winning goal with 25.6 seconds to go. Iby was assisted by Mossy Kearney ’24. For the first time in school history, the Cardinals became D1 State Champions, defeating Xaverian Brothers High School 3-2. “It’s absolutely incredible. We didn’t just want it for us. We won it for that team a couple of years ago. All those seniors, all

the alumni before us. We’ve had so many chances to win it. We finally managed to take the title and we were able to win it for our school and everyone that came before us” said Josh after the game.

Coach Foley was overwhelmed with text messages from former players, congratulating him on achieving the state title. “A lot of those kids were feeling like there was some unfinished business and so they’re a part of this and it’s good that we were able to win it for, not only this team, but all of our former teams and alumni” said Coach Foley.

While this tremendous accomplishment by our boys hockey team filled all members of our tight-knit community with great pride, the pride traveled well beyond Pope Francis Prep. It was 1952 when a Western Mass hockey team last won the top prize. The 2023 Cardinals are thrilled to bring the title back to Western Massachusetts!

How can you help?

More than 92,000 people in the U.S. are on a waiting list to receive a kidney, and the need for organs, tissue and blood is ever-increasing. Anyone — no matter their age or health conditions — can register to be an organ donor at the time of death. Organs have been transplanted from donors as old as 95!

A LIFE OF Service

AT THE HIGH POINT of my summer, I was under the knife. On July 14, 2022, my healthy right kidney was removed and sewn into the abdomen of someone I’d never met. The twohour surgery was anticlimactic, a culmination of many months’ worth of labs, logistics and LOTS of waiting to find a suitable recipient. I was walking around and eating a normal diet that night. Pain was minimal, and my incisions were tiny. I had been very well prepared for the surgery at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, the hospital where I work as an ICU nurse. I knew what to expect every step of the way during my two-night stay.

I’d first heard a friend had donated her kidney to a neighbor about 20 years earlier. The idea so impressed me, it percolated in my head until finally the misery and isolation of the pandemic spurred me to take the first steps toward donation.

Truth be told, the seeds for the transplant idea were sown in me further back — about 35 years — in the halls of Cathedral High School (a predecessor to Pope Francis Prep). Cathedral shaped me in ways I appreciate only now. My high school

years were a whirlwind of extracurriculars: the Minstrel Show, the musical, National Honor Society, blood drives, the Pro-Life Club, Community Council, Model Senate, the food shelf … and the list goes on.

I’ve maintained that whirlwind throughout my adult life with a host of volunteer activities — at church, at the hospital, at a local theater, at my two sons’ schools. It was a bit of an a-ha moment for me to realize my life of service is merely a continuation of what started at CHS. Those extracurriculars weren’t so “extra” after all. Serving meals, donating blood, racking up volunteer hours for NHS – these activities were at the essence of the Catholic education I received. Along with the academics, I learned to give my time, treasure and talents in service to others and in witness to Christ.

Nine months after the surgery, both the recipient and I are doing well and have had the opportunity to meet! We’re both beyond fortunate that I had a treasure that could improve his life, and that I felt called by God to share it with him.

I also give thanks for all I gained at Cathedral that helped me to hear that call.

Letter from the Director of Development

Dear Alumni, Family, and Friends,

There is no shortage of thanks to go around as Pope Francis Prep completes its fifth year on our new campus.

Thank you for your support of Pope Francis Preparatory School, which continues to have a significant impact on the students of today and tomorrow. Through the first three quarters of the fiscal year, Pope Francis Prep was able to make considerable strides. We have increased fundraising efforts by 25% and partnered with over 1,000 benefactors who have made over 1,200 gifts in support of our mission. In addition to our annual success, our endowment portfolio increased to over $17 million, providing our school community with over $700,000 in annual operational support and scholarships. Your annual generosity, combined with an incredible investment portfolio, provides us with a foundation to make decisions that benefit our outstanding students today and into the future.

Our gratitude extends to the Board of Directors, who lend their time, talent, and treasure through an independent school governance model. To our dedicated faculty and staff for their daily passion and commitment to our mission. To our parents, for entrusting us and choosing a Catholic education for their child(ren), as well as volunteering and committing their support to create a family-oriented environment. And to our alumni and benefactors, who continue to invest in the success of our young women and men, our annual growth, and our long-

term financial stability. Our community stepped up this past March for our third annual Day of Giving. In all, we raised over $84,000 from more than 470 donors. This amazing day created a contagious culture of generosity and connected us with benefactors throughout the country in support of our mission.

As we enter into the fourth quarter of the fiscal year, Dr. Paul Harrington and the Board of Directors continue to provide a clear vision to ensure that Pope Francis Prep remains a top-notch, premier Catholic school for years to come. A clear vision is accompanied by a collective community that provides a level of trust for our most generous benefactors to make meaningful and significant investments in our most deserving students.

I thank you for making this a school year filled with new accomplishments and milestones. The future remains bright at Pope Francis Prep, and your support has a lasting impact on the lives of our students daily. Thank you for supporting all things Pope Francis Prep and believing in our young women and men.

Sincerely,
