Introduction

It has been 100 months since we launched Pool’s first

issue with Abhijit Bansod on the cover. Back then I was not sure we would have 100 faces to put on the cover or enough content to produce a magazine every month.

Somehow design magazines in India have always had to close down due to a dearth of content. Frankly, that has never been our problem. If you are fine with a unknown new face on the cover and adventurous enough to look into design beyond your own little circle, you will never run out of content and covers!

This 100th issue posed a great challenge - what should it be about? While it is an important milestone in our brief history, it needed to indicate that our journey lies ahead, not in what we have already accomplished. That brought us to the question - what have designers in India accomplished?

And a bigger question – where is Indian design going?

Where design in India is going depends a lot on how we address challenges that face us today, and these are not the same challenges we had 30 years back. Design is a known profession today, it is a definite career (not an alternative

The robustness of the creative industry is highly STUDENT, PEARL ACADEMY

underappreciated. In my opinion, India needs to come to a state of awareness of the power of design. There must be a new wave of understanding of not only its power of influence but also the work and effort that is made to create it. We need great narratives to spread awareness and strategies on how we can measure the success of a creative output.

G lobally, design is seen as an outcome or as an objectified FOUNDER, ANALOGY DESIGN

task rather than a process for breakthrough innovation.

Due to the absence of clear frameworks and segmented disciplines, design is used to beautify objects and experiences later on in the product lifecycle, rather than being included from the beginning.

As designers and creatives, we need to help organizations see value in implementing design early on to solve problems with a thought process and strategic objectives. It’s not going to happen overnight but as leaders, we need to educate everyone about the process of design and creative thinking. I am confident there are organizations in India who are willing to get on board the design journey and see the value in it. With time as we see more success stories of creativity and innovation accelerating an organization’s growth, there will be more takers for what we do.

Today, with the economy exploding with new businesses and their respective visual communication, making an impact has never been more difficult. As designers, breaking out of this monotony and venturing into newer and experimental design is crucial, and requires courage, confidence and the ability to take risks.

locked up personal wealth have rendered society complacent and confused, thinking that design is faff, and storytelling is about using many meaningless words.

We need people to believe in perseverance of excellence in personal work - designers, engineers, scientists, accountants, politicians, chefs, guards or roadside cleaners who are contributing to society. Man is not a man without integrity and a nation comprising of such mass is not the one to stand out brilliantly.

lack of awareness and insulation of disciplines from one another. In order to move forward, different industries must be able to learn from each other, to borrow technologies, methods and processes. What is applicable in one discipline may be used to enhance another. Design practices need to be more interdisciplinary and opensource as opposed to working in silos. A free and open exchange of views gives birth to innovative ideas and unlimited potential.

The technological world is rapidly shifting in a direction IDC, IIT BOMBAY

that is soon likely to challenge the very need for designers.

The industrial age and digital age are behind us now. It is the age of data science (big data) and artificial intelligence.

We are experiencing a tectonic shift. It has invaded many disciplines, making the current practices obsolete.

Machine learning and analytics are intruding into the designer’s skills and expertise. The 1960s dream of a machine that designs is not too far off. The shift is bringing disruptive changes in the way material culture is created and consumed.

A designer’s survival demands that he reimagines design and explores alternative scenarios. We can join hands with the machine or work out our strategies by studying the weaknesses of the machine and thrive professionally. In either of the cases, the mutual coexistence is inevitable.

Unfortunately the design community has not yet seen this as a challenge, nor has it attempted to reimagine design.

with the growth of startups and platforms like digital India. There is also a vast gap in the design education system in India and the requirements and expectations of a designer in the industry.

We lack adequate design education platforms.

There is also lack of awareness in society to consider design as a serious profession. This challenge can be tackled by building more design education platforms in India.

Design education in India should meet global practices in design. We need to create next generation design thinkers to lead all the industries in solving problems and bringing innovation.

India is a talent house of creative people who are very FOUNDER, INK N BLISS

skilful in their work, but face a lack of material. I am a professional calligrapher and I always struggle to find good calligraphy supplies in India. Instead of focusing on what is not available, I try to create more art with what I have or ask friends traveling abroad to source supplies for me.

I hope this will change soon and we will have easy access to calligraphy supplies in India.
