INDIA’S BEST DESIGN STUDIOS & PROJECTS 2020

Why Fight Back It is difficult to see change or believe that this change is likely to stay forever. It all happened suddenly, almost like an accident, and many of us still have to accept the change. We are still hoping that things will soon be back to what we have known them to be. We are putting our hopes in too many things: a vaccine, the human spirit, free markets, talent, and the human quest to do better despite the struggle. For all we know, we may get back to normal with time. Or to the 'new normal' as everyone is terming the unknown. But for now, the pandemic has caused too much sorrow and sadness all around. We are immersed in news about the doomed economy, lost jobs, overwhelmed systems, and so much more.

Designindia was founded in 2002. It was started as a platform for interaction for the design community in India and abroad. Over the years it has grown into a forum spread over many social and professional networking domains, linking design professionals into an active, interactive and thought leading community.

Designers and creative folk were trying to come to terms with an overwhelming world even before the pandemic. These sensitive minds create objects and things that sometimes result in a delayed realization amongst society and industry. Many designers were already opposed to the instant benefit culture that has come about in our industry. The creative mind was already stressed by the culture that was aligning us to the purpose of free markets. The pandemic has now presented a new narrative to designers and challenges our role, processes, and existence. While on the one hand, the expectations have become more ruthless, perhaps more naked, on the other, what you can do and the environment in which you perform is challenged. It is time for us to think...for now as well as for the long term. What has changed, and directly as a response, what must change? We believe that is the fightback we need to be ready for.

IBDA in its 5th year This year we would have given the Awards a miss. Apart from what we all know and are going through, the DesignIndia magazine was under reconsideration. For some time, we were not sure about the future of the magazine (we never are!) and didn’t know if it would continue to be published. Or whether it would change. Or what would happen to it. For those of you who do not know, the magazine is published by a functioning design studio (IndiDesign). Although it has been published for the last ten years, it is not the primary activity or bread earner for the studio. So, changes in studio work impact the magazine in many ways. Through the current pandemic, IndiDesign itself has been through some systemic changes of gigantic proportions. But that is an issue to be spoken about on another forum. After a lot of deliberation, we decided to go ahead with the Awards, but were concerned whether designers would care about awards during such times. Would they have the resources to participate? As far as the management of the Awards is concerned, we were always online. Since our first Awards in 2015, entries to IBDA have been entered and judged online. So, in our 5th year, that was not a problem at all. We put together a fabulous Jury (like every year) and put out the invitation to enter. The response was overwhelming and heartwarming. The entries surpassed the numbers of earlier years. It seemed like the entries this year were carefully articulated, and they came in on time. Unlike every other year, the pressure was not on the last date for entries...they came in like a stream. Judging was a tremendous task, and we are excited to show you the inspiring work that people have been creating. We decided to celebrate and honor the efforts designers have been putting into their work by bringing out this hardbound issue of the magazine. A hardbound book is always kept and cherished, and that’s what we want to do with your amazing work. Thank you for keeping the excitement intact and having faith in us.
