2022 Show Guide - Canadian Pool & Spa Conference & Expo

On behalf of the Pool & Hot Tub Council of Canada’s Board of Directors, it is my great pleasure to welcome all attendees and exhibitors to the 2022 Canadian Pool & Spa Conference & Expo.

Over the past few years, we had to pivot to an online format for the show due to closures, lockdowns and/or capacity restrictions, but for the first time since December 2019, we can gather live and in-person for The Show. This year’s Conference and Expo is packed full of educational offerings, seminars, hands-on learning experiences, and a tradeshow floor full of exhibitors excited to showcase their new products.

As an industry, we are continuing to see an increased demand for the products and services we provide. The efforts of our industry manufacturers over the past few years to increase production capacities have continued, and lead times for many product lines have shortened to far more manageable timelines for project procurement, inventory control and customer satisfaction. While we still face some product and material shortages, labour shortages, increased cost of goods and other challenges, our industry has continued to demonstrate the ability to adapt and perform.

I would like to thank all the employees and volunteers that make up the Board of Directors and various Committees, who made this year’s show possible. Due to the hard work of everyone involved, we can offer more seminars and education courses then ever before. With a variety of updated and new 301 level courses in Water Chemistry and Hydraulics, seminars ranging from energy efficiency and green technology to digital marketing strategies and employee investment fundamentals, as well as the Certified Pool Operator Course, there is sure to be something for everyone.

The 2022 Canadian Pool & Spa Conference & Expo is the perfect place to come together as an industry and connect, learn, share, and celebrate our successes. I look forward to seeing everyone!

This CPO® certification course is designed to provide participants with the basic knowledge, techniques, and skills of pool and spa operations. The CPO® certification program is widely accepted by health departments throughout North America. Upon registering for the course students will receive the Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook, updated to include the most current information and are available both in English and French. CPO certified instructors have received comprehensive training to teach the CPO® certification program. The training these instructors provide has helped protect millions of swimmers by reducing hazards at aquatic facilities. The CPO® certification course is a two-day class that will cover 14-16 hours of information from the NSPF® Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook and local codes taught by an NSPF® Instructor. The dynamic setting offers direct interaction with an instructor and fellow students. Among the subjects to be addressed include Water Balance, Pool Water Contamint ion, Disinfection, Filtration, and Water Circulation. Students who pass the open book exam will earn CPO® certification.

Note: We encourage students to register well in advance so that the Pool & Spa Operator™ Handbook can be sent directly to their homes prior to the conference. This will allow students to prepare in advance of the classroom.

AAs many business owners can relate, owning and operating a company involves long work hours, and any time that is left for a little R and R does not permit travelling or going to a cottage. Such was the case for this homeowner in Vaughan, Ont., whose house serves as a gathering place for family and friends.

Although the backyard already included a large, stamped-concrete patio, outdoor kitchen, and covered pavilion area, the thought of adding a swimming pool to the mix upped the ante of the backyard’s entertainment value. Unfortunately, the only space in the yard that could accommodate the pool, while keeping everything else intact, was deemed unusable until Backyard Getaways, a swimming pool design/build company in Brampton, Ont., got involved.

While prior builders suggested a pool installation was not possible, Backyard Getaways thought outside the box and requested a minor zoning variance from the city that would allow the pool to be installed in the exterior side yard. Once this was approved, the challenge then became installing the pool while at the same time keeping the existing backyard features, maintaining a safe walkway between the house and pool, and incorporating an automatic pool safety cover.

To do this, Backyard Getaways used 3-D computer modelling (inset, middle) along with an innovative, poured structural concrete wall forming system to build the 4.2- x 8-m (14- x 26-ft) rectangular swimming pool and customized its shape by cutting off one of the 90-degree corners. To accommodate the automatic cover (inset, right), an extreme-cantilevered deck was designed to allow the cover to simply slide beneath the cut corner.
