PUBLISHER’S LETTER Spring Ahead.... The changes of spring are all around Florida’s first coast. Plush local foliage is coming alive before our eyes, temperatures are rising, convertible tops are coming down, and beach festivals seem to be popping up every week. This year spring signals change at PVL as well. This is the first issue developed under our new publishing team, and we promise you will be delighted with the additions ahead. We will continue with PVL’s traditional stunning fashion spreads and will be expanding the range and usability of our content. We are expanding sections to promote new products or technologies that might positively affect our clients’ lives. We see PVL becoming an information source for our area businesses and readers alike. This issue we call attention to a local spring favorite: The Players Championship. PVL is your guide to the TPC highlighting exactly where you want to be and when to get the full experience. Your social calendar will be full if you check with PVL first. We’re also giving our full attention to the men of Ponte Vedra with a special TPC guide just for them. We’ve sought out everything a guy needs for TPC week including nearby hangouts for a meaty meal and a few happy hour specials, tips on cigar selection, post-tourney parties, the latest in golf gear and attire, and even tips from TPC golf pros to fix your bad golf swing habits. If golf isn’t your thing, maybe red wine is. Our travel section highlights our vacation to Napa Valley complete with a list of can’tmiss vineyards. And of course, we would never abandon our loyal fashionistas! This issue showcases a stunning layout with America’s Next Top Model winner and Jacksonville native Yoanna House in a vintage airplane–inspired shoot in the magnificent Marco Hangar. In closing, I would like to express sincere thanks to our readers and advertisers without whom PVL would cease to exist. I am very excited with this new challenge and look at it as an opportunity to make a great magazine even better. Suggestions are always welcome at PVL, so please don’t hesitate to contact us. I hope you enjoy the issue. Kim Ponte Vedra Life

here is only one place in Jacksonville where a 3-year-old can eat a salad made of vegetables she grew from seedlings, learn Mandarin Chinese, mentor a 2-year-old, and share artwork via Skype with a child living in the Congo. And that place is Discovery Montessori in Jacksonville Beach. Utilized in some 20,000 schools worldwide, the Montessori method of education, developed by educator and physician Maria Montessori in the early 1900s, supports the development of each child at his or her own pace through independence, self-discovery, and multi-age classroom learning. Discovery Montessori was founded in 1990 by dedicated parents who wished to further the Montessori experience for their children. Located on

two wooded acres in a quiet residential area of Jacksonville Beach, Discovery maintains a carefully planned and stimulating environment where children discover materials specially designed for their maturity level. Discovery’s campus-like learning environment, known as the Montessori Village, creates an integrated and dynamic community of students, families, teachers and friends. “Our campus is very warm and inviting,” said Kim Bednarek, head of the school. The school is nonprofit and holds accreditations from the Florida Kindergarten Council, American Montessori Society, and Independent School Management. Younger children are grouped with older children providing an opportunity for mentorship and behavior modeling. As students give lessons to other students, they exercise leadership and also master the subject matter. “If you’ve taught a subject, you’ve mastered the concept,” Bednarek said. In an effort to teach conservationism, Discovery implemented their Youth Philanthropy Initiative this year. As part of the initiative, students visit the White Oak Conservation Center in Northeast Florida to learn about some of the world’s

rarest animals and related research and conservation efforts. They then sell Endangered Species organic chocolate to raise funds for conservation causes. “We want to teach the difference between philanthropy and charity,” Bednarek said, “and philanthropy is looking for solutions to problems.” Discovery also values green living and teaches children to cultivate, eat and even sell produce that they grow in their own “edible schoolyard.” Some of these plants are grown from seedlings in an on-site greenhouse. “We’re having an Earth Day festival in April where the children will sell items from their garden to raise money for future supplies and seeds,” Bednarek said. The school building itself is consistent with the conservation and green living values the school teaches. Discovery has been awarded a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certificate by the U.S. Green Building Council. The certificate verifies that the school was designed and built with consideration to sustainable materials, water savings, energy efficiency, and indoor environmental quality. Children at Discovery Montessori are grouped by age into four categories: Toddler Community (18 months to 3 years); Preprimary, (ages 3 to 6); Lower Elementary, (first and second grades); and Upper Elementary, (third, fourth, and fifth grades).

morning class or a four-day morning class that is designed to assist children toward independence, social awareness, respect and the development of motor skills and language. Toddler classrooms are prepared to provide nurturance, security and challenges in an orderly environment.

Preprimary Education (ages 3 to 6) The multi-age classroom allows students to learn from their experienced peers. Older children benefit from a leadership opportunity while younger children have daily positive role models aside from their teachers. Students are encouraged to focus on their own progress and develop to their fullest potential.

Elementary Education (ages 6 to 11) In this multi-age classroom, students are able to learn from their experienced peers and are encouraged to concentrate on their own progress. These students acquire an awareness and appreciation for people beyond their own community. They learn about the universe at large as well as other areas of the world where students live and how they relate to those microcosms. OF FACE TIME: 5 MINUTES Former NFL player and University of Florida star quarterback Shane Matthews chats with PVL about life on the side lines PVL: Your college football career is noted as one of the most memorable in the history of Florida. You have set records and acquired awards throughout your college and NFL careers. How were you able to transition from breathing football every day to living an ordinary life? SM: I retired from football in 2006, and since then I have kept very busy being a dad and spending time with my kids. It is sometimes difficult realizing that something you’ve done your entire life is over and now it’s time to focus on something new. However, being a competitive person, I have naturally been steered back to football, but now as a high school football coach. PVL: What is it like being an educator and mentor to Allen D. Nease High School students? SM: Being a high school coach is something that I always wanted to achieve. In my opinion, a high school coach has much more influence on a kid than any other coach he will ever play for. I enjoy it because not only are we coaching the fundamentals of football, but we are also coaching the fundamentals of life — teaching kids to do the right things and make smart choices that will allow them to be successful in life. My dad was my high school coach in Mississippi. He helped develop our team into state champions. Those are memories that will last a lifetime and ones I will never forget. I hope to follow in his footsteps.

16 |

Ponte Vedra Life

PVL: What are your goals for Nease High School’s football team? Are you planning on grooming the next Tim Tebow? SM: Bottom line: To win! Win championships — district, state. That is what we preach. That is why we do all of the hard work in the off-season and during the season. Nease will win and win doing it the right way. We will be a first-class organization. Our kids will do well in the classroom, no exception. We will have measures in place to ensure that our kids act appropriately on and off the field. On Friday nights our fans will see that we are a well-coached team, fundamentally sound and one that plays extremely hard. My goal is to develop a top-notch football program in Northeast Florida as well as

the entire state. I want to create an atmosphere where kids want to play for Nease and will cherish playing there on Friday nights. I plan on grooming a lot of good, solid football players. My staff and I are committed to pushing and developing all players in the Nease football program. I am excited about the staff I have put together and feel like it’s possibly the most qualified staff around. Our goal is to challenge our kids athletically and academically and develop them into solid young men. PVL: When we hear the name Shane Matthews, we automatically think: quarterback for the Gators. When your children hear your name, what comes to their minds? Who is Shane Matthews to them? SM: I am just a normal dad to them. I am a dad that drives dance carpool, spends time with my daughter at dance recitals and competitions, and coaches youth sports. I coach my son’s football, basketball, and baseball teams. I can’t be more proud of my kids and the young adults they have matured into. They have moved with me throughout my NFL days and loved every minute of it. They know that I will always be there for them no matter what. They are my pride and joy. PVL: Tell us about your family life. What is a typical weekend in the Matthews household?

SM: Not really. Sports are still a very big part of my life — always have been and most likely always will be, especially now that I’m a high school coach. For the last five to six years I have thoroughly enjoyed training and motivating young quarterbacks. For the last 12 years I have run Camp QB (www.CampQB.com) with my good friend and Jacksonville University coach, Kerwin Bell. Camp QB is one of the top quarterback camps in the country for kids in sixth to 12th grades. We have kids attend from all over the country. It’s extremely rewarding watching their growth and development each year. I am also hosting a Youth Football Camp this summer on July 20 and 21 called the Shane Matthews Fun-N-Gun Youth Football Camp. I really enjoy taking everything that I’ve learned throughout my playing days and instilling it into these young kids. PVL: Now let’s get personal. What is your idea of the perfect day? SM: Lots of golf. I always enjoy a challenging round of golf when I have time. I love going fishing with my son and basically watching my kids do anything they love to do. My life right now is pretty hectic, so a perfect day to me would be low-key, relaxing at home, taking it easy, and spending time with my kids.

SM: My typical weekend is usually pretty chaotic. There is usually some type of sporting event that my son is involved in or a dance recital or dance practice for my daughter. I can tell you there is never a dull moment. If there is some down time, I’ll usually sneak out for some golf. PVL: Your passion, love and dedication has always revolved around the sport. As you’ve matured, has your focus detoured and evolved in a different direction? Ponte Vedra Life

T

he charms of Northern California’s Napa Valley stay the same year-round: a bucolic setting, stellar hospitality, and world-class wine and food. Depending on when you visit, the character of these charms varies thanks to that delicious inevitability that is the changing of the seasons. Most visitors tour the valley in the summer months as the vines are ripening in a comfortable 85 degrees, but late winter and spring are equally ideal with a bumper crop of mustard plants turning the rolling hills bright yellow. At just one-eighth the size of Bordeaux, France, Napa Valley is internationally known as one of the world’s greatest wine regions. More than 400 wineries of every stature dot the 30-mile valley of over 45,000 acres, each cultivating grapes of popular varietals.

34 |

Ponte Vedra Life

Small family-run or boutique-style wineries offer the most authentic wine country experience, where the owner or winemaker personally gives a tour and conducts the tasting. The experience teaches the taster about how the soil, weather, aging process and wood barrels influence the final product. These boutique aficionados are passionate about the wine they produce, and their personal stories only richen the experience. Ponte Vedra Life took a journey through Napa this winter. In between dining at premier restaurants like The French Laundry, a hot spring mud bath in Calistoga, and wandering the lush grounds along the Napa River at the Milliken Creek Inn and Spa — all of which we highly recommend — we did not neglect the main draw of Napa Valley: wine tasting.

HERE IS A FORETASTE OF OUR FINDINGS. ENJOY. Schramsberg Vineyards Schramsberg has been served at state dinners by every U.S. president since Richard Nixon used their Blanc de Blancs for the “Toast to Peace” in Beijing in 1972. Since then, Schramsberg Vineyards has become widely regarded as America’s best producer of sparkling wine. The tour is captivating telling of German founder Jacob Schram, who was the first in California to dig caves into the mountain to keep the wines cool during the hot summer. The tasting agent describes in great detail how champagne-style wines are made and how smaller bubbles generally indicate a better quality champagne.

Larkmead Vineyards On 145 acres on the floor of Napa Valley, Larkmead produces primarily Cabernet Sauvignon although they have begun to offer small quantities of white wines. The 2009 Cabernet is spectacular with an up-front taste

and a long, smooth finish. We sipped reds by the fire and discussed the unique growing environment afforded Larkmead by nature. The Meritage style offerings are heavy in Cabernet Sauvignon and equally delicious. Anyone who enjoys big red wines will love Larkmead.

Morningside Vineyard George Grodahl founded Morningside Vineyard in 1991 and first produced Chanticleer wines as a hobby in 1994. He expanded production in 2000 but still only produces a few hundred cases a year. Growing only red varietals, the vineyard produces Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese grapes, which are used to produce what most would call “Super Tuscan” style wines. The Cabernet has just enough Sangiovese to soften it and make it unique. The Sangiovese is a lighter, fruity red that gathers body and complexity from the Cabernet. Both are delicious.

Allora Vineyards Terry and Nancy Klein, owners and founders of Allora, are relative newcomers to the wine scene producing their first harvest in fall of 2002. Their 10-acre vineyard produces only red varietals. All of the wines are spectacular here, but the two high-end Cabernet Sauvignon offerings stand out. The Tresca has about 10 percent Cabernet Franc mixed in to produce a complex, powerful ripe berry taste. The 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon Lusso is a decadent wine that explodes on the palate. But the story of the Lusso label, which includes the “Empty Glass” painting by Margaret Keane, is reason enough to visit Allora.

Anomaly Vineyards When Steve and Linda Goldfarb’s hobby of winemaking in their garage led to high demand from friends, they decided to expand their process. They added a winery next to their small vineyard, and more wonderful Cabernet Sauvignon followed. The Cabernet is smooth yet rich and tastes big without overpowering the palate. On a beautiful piece of property, the stone winery looks like it has been around much longer than its 11 years. Ponte Vedra Life

EYELINER

TECHNIQUES for Glam Lids and Lashes

D

ating back to ancient Egypt as early as 10,000 B.C., cosmetics were typically made out of lead and copper to protect the skin from the hot desert sun. Research has also ventured that eyeliner was worn to protect the wearer from the evil eye. Eyeliner was reintroduced to the modern world in the 1920s — only this time its purpose was purely aesthetic. Women were pushing the boundaries of fashion, and the trend has stuck. Today, eyeliner is one of the most effective ways to give the eyes definition and the appearance of being lifted. Use these modern-

38 |

by Carrie Wilson

ized guidelines to get the perfect level of lift and intensity for any occasion.

THE TAILORED SUIT A favorite look for 2012 is the tailored deep eyeliner on the top lash. Try a gel, liquid, or pen formula for this look. Start by applying the product on the inner corner of the eye and sweep out to the outer lash line. Make sure to get the product as close to the lash line as possible. Simply extend the eyeliner slightly beyond the eye for the retro glam cat eye effect. Always keep Q-tips and a little bit of eye makeup remover handy to clean up any

mistakes. Customize the thickness of the liner to the occasion: really thin for every day and super thick and dramatic for evening. This technique creates lift and a bright-eyed look making it great for those who have darkness or puffiness under the eyes.

RUN-OF-THE-MILL For a quick everyday look, use a basic pencil eyeliner. Even if you don’t have time to apply any eye shadow, liner is the fastest and easiest way to make your eyes stand out. Depending on the look you are going for, line the top lash line only or line the entire eye, top and bottom. Always make sure you connect the top and bottom liner on the corner of the eye if you decide to line the entire eye. Choose a shade that is darker than your eye color as this will help to define your eyes.

ALL THE DRAMA For a more dramatic or smoky-eye look, use a dark eye shadow for eyeliner. Apply it with a damp eye liner brush or a pencil. Line the eyes from the inner corner to the outer cor-

ner using a sweeping motion with the brush or pencil. Line the eyes on the top and bottom lash line making sure to connect the top and bottom together on the corners. The top liner should be slightly more defined or deeper than the bottom liner as this will lift the eyes. Play with colors and shimmer for more drama.

TOOLS OF THE TRADE To make sure your liner always looks fresh, modern and fabulous, buy products that are smudge-proof or water-resistant. If using a gel or powder liner, keep the brush clean so each application goes on as smoothly as the day you purchased it. One final tip: Never line just the bottom of the eye. This causes a very heavy look and does the opposite of lifting the eye. With the eyeliner trend this season, don’t be afraid to experiment. Makeup is about expressing oneself and trying new things. If you don’t like it, just grab a Q-tip, some eye makeup remover, and start again.

See and Be Seen Where To Be Seen

Everyone who’s anyone is at THE PLAYERS, and if you’ve been at least once, you know that hole No. 17 is a major hub of activity. But check out these other hotspots, and you’ll be sure to run into someone you know — or want to know.

The Turn

You’ll need to purchase an upgraded ticket to gain access to The Turn, but it is well worth it. Located between holes No. 18 and No. 9, this hospitality venue gives an excellent view of both holes from either the air-conditioned interior or the outside stadium seating.

The No. 1 Tee

The No. 1 tee is your chance to be seen by friends and family watching at home and possibly a worldwide television audience. Be part of the crowd when the best players in the world tee off, and you just might make the Golf Channel or NBC broadcast.

Clubhouse Lawn

If you have an upgraded Clubhouse ticket, don’t spend all your time indoors. Hang out on the clubhouse lawn and enjoy food and beverages available for purchase from the awardwinning Nineteen restaurant. In the shadow of the beautiful 77,000-square-foot clubhouse, the lawn offers ample seating, umbrella tables and a view of No. 18 green.

WHERE TO SEE THE GOLFERS

Check out these sneaky locations to get a close-up of the action and some of the best players in the world.

The Practice Area

True golf fans know that the practice area is a must-stop at THE PLAYERS. Grab a spot up against the rope line and be this close to the world’s best as they hone their craft — sometimes for hours on end. Players will usually stop and sign autographs as they come and go from this area.

The Scoring Area

Another area where players let their guards down and interact with the fans is outside the scoring area. Located between the clubhouse and the JELD-WEN Stadium Village, the scoring area is where players stop to sign their scorecards after they finish their rounds Thursday through Sunday. This is one of the best places to hang out and collect player autographs.

BEST CHANCE FOR CELEBRITY SIGHTINGS

Sure, there’s Tiger, Phil, Ernie, Rickie and the rest of the gang. But THE PLAYERS has its fair share of celebrities who are big fans of the world’s best golfers, just like you. You never know who you’ll see strolling along the rope line and enjoying the action, but here are a few additional locations where celebs flock throughout the week.

The Jaguar Den

Hang out near the Jaguar Den by No. 17 tee for a glimpse of some of your favorite Jags, the coaches and mascot Jaxson De Ville as they relax and enjoy THE PLAYERS Championship.

Military Appreciation Day

Don’t miss Military Appreciation Day on Wednesday on the Clubhouse Lawn, where local celebrities and PGA Tour players can often be spotted at the concert and expressing thanks to our service members, so keep your eyes peeled.

Hot Spots THE PLAYERS is introducing three new venues this year for fan and family entertainment. Each provides a chance to cool off in the shade, grab a drink, relax with friends and watch the tournament on large LED video boards. Here’s a rundown of the new venues and a refresher of last year’s additions in case you missed them.

Wine and Dine on 9

Spearheaded by Matthew Medure, one of Northeast Florida’s most renowned chefs, Wine and Dine on 9 is a new venue that will offer tournament-goers the chance to enjoy a gourmet meal, a glass of wine, and the opportunity to take in their surroundings in style. Wine and Dine on 9 will be located to the left of No. 9 fairway.

Kid Zone

With face painting and temporary tattoos, the Kid Zone is a fun interactive place to take your kids when restlessness comes into play. Adult concession areas are also available at the end of the Nicklaus gate walkway.

JELD-WEN Stadium Village and PwC First Tee Challenge

JELD-WEN Stadium Village is the ultimate destination to cool off. This completely tented and air-conditioned venue features cell phone and mobile device access, restrooms, and a cash bar as well as the PwC First Tee Challenge, a scaled down version of the famous 17th island green. The Stadium “Snapshot” is available for commemorative photos as well as a ball-fitting and custom door–fitting exhibit. JELD-WEN Stadium Village’s newest site is The Ketel One Vodka Bar, a hot spot for grabbing a drink, mingling and shopping for THE PLAYERS clothing and memorabilia.

The Terrace

Located on the lawn area between the clubhouse and the practice facility, The Terrace has the perfect view of the chipping green and practice area, where you can watch players warm up and work on their games. It’s also a great hub to meet your friends for cocktails.

Four Points

Located south of the clubhouse, west of the No. 18 green, and adjacent to the practice area pond, Four Points is an exterior fan zone with seating for the public and food and beverages for purchase.

O

ne mission of the PGA TOUR is to give back to the communities where tournaments are held and where the players live. The tour is actively fulfilling this through its “Together, Anything’s Possible” campaign. In our community, THE PLAYERS Championship has a committed goal to generate $50 million for youth-related charities over the next 10 years. Since THE PLAYERS moved to Ponte Vedra in 1977, more than $46 million of its revenues have gone to benefit Northeast Florida charities, including a record $5.9 million donation in 2011. Approximately 71 percent of the revenue from THE PLAYERS Championship 2011 benefitted children’s charities along the First Coast. With this dedicated effort, the

event is well on its way to making a significant financial impact on area non-profits that promote education, character development, and health and fitness for young people. This year THE PLAYERS will feature a Charity of the Day throughout tournament week starting on Tuesday, May 8. The goal of this outreach is to increase awareness of the charities and to recognize the charitable impact THE PLAYERS has on the local community. The Charity of the Day will post volunteers at each of the entry gates to the tournament, where they will hand out materials about their charity. In addition, the charity will have a feature article in the daily pairing guides, a mention on the LED boards around the course and the opportunity to showcase creative elements around the course.

Gentleman’s Choice:

7 area courses, 1 dream week of golf By Jackie Hanson

C

H AT T I N G U P T H E L O C A L G O L F E N T H U S I A S T S ,

one will find that every golfer has his course preference. But that’s not to say he doesn’t frequent other courses every now and then to change up the scenery and challenge himself with new hazards. We’ve compiled a list of seven area courses that seem to come up often in conversation as the local favorites. Playing one every day of tournament week would be a dream that most likely won’t come true, but getting in a couple? No problem. Most of these courses are private, but luckily, golf is a social sport, and you can always find a guy who knows a guy who’d be happy to invite you out.

Jacksonville Golf and Country Club 3985 Hunt Club Road, Jacksonville, FL 32224 (904) 223-5555 • www.jaxgcc.com/golf Jacksonville Golf and Country Club is a private, member-owned championship course in a gated community. Designed by Clyde Johnston and PGA TOUR Professional Fuzzy Zoeller in 1989, this par-72 course features a few wide-open fairway shots intermixed with narrower ones that demand accuracy. Deviating from the straight-away on these holes will land you in some tight spots. The 6,892-yard course ends back at a grandiose Southern plantation-style clubhouse. Seven sets of tees, including two sets for children, make this an accommodating course for families and golfers of all skill level.

Ocean and Lagoon at the Ponte Vedra Inn and Club 200 Ponte Vedra Blvd., Ponte Vedra Beach, FL 32082 (904) 285-1111 • www.pontevedra.com Ponte Vedra Inn and Club is home to the region’s original resort golf course, The Ocean Course, built in 1928. The course’s layout, formed by mule power before large machinery came into play, provides a spontaneous, rippling landscape that would not have been possible with modern excavators. British architect, Herbert Bertram Strong included 99 sand bunkers, adding beauty to the course and the occasional frustration. Three decades later in 1961, Joe Lee and Robert Trent Jones, Sr., designed the Lagoon Course to complement the Ocean Course and offer a different playing experience. Shorter in length and somewhat more forgiving, Lagoon still requires accuracy to conquer the narrow fairways and water hazards on 11 of 18 holes. Par-72 Ocean and par-70 Lagoon measure 6,574 yards and 6,022 yards, respectively.

Palencia Club 600 Palencia Club Drive, St. Augustine, FL 32095 (904) 599-9040 • www.palenciaclub.com Designed by Arthur Hills in 2002, the private champion course of Palencia winds its way alongside the Intracoastal Waterway and the Tolomato River. Immersed in the landscape of North Florida, golfers enjoy an ocean breeze off the Intracoastal Waterway and fairways bordered by trees and parkland. Averaging 5,000 square feet, the greens are an ultra-dwarf Bermuda grass, which allows for an enhanced ball speed and consistency. The practice areas are equally inviting with a range tee complex and 10,000 square feet of putting greens. The par-72 course measure 7,073 yards.

St. Johns Country Club 205 St. Johns Golf Drive, St Augustine, FL 32092 (904) 940-3200 • www.stjohnsgolf.com Just north of St. Augustine, St. Johns Country Club course works its way through a pine forest, joining only a handful of Jacksonville area courses to be Audubon-certified as cooperative sanctuaries. Aside from being known for its abundant wildlife, St. Johns Country Club has been nationally recognized for its customer satisfaction and agronomic performance and was named Facility of the Year for 2010 at the World Golf Village’s annual conference. Designed by Clyde Johnston in 2001, the course is public and accepts tee times one week in advance. Challenging winds have been known to increase the difficulty of the par-72 course, and length of play varies from 2,400 yards from the family tees to 7,250 yards from the other five tee sets.

Timuquana Country Club 4028 Timuquana Road, Jacksonville, FL 32210 (904) 389-0477 • www.timuquana.net One of the oldest country clubs in Jacksonville, Timuquana Country Club, dating to 1923, spans 290 acres along the St. Johns River. Its view of the downtown Jacksonville skyline is juxtaposed with a grand “Gone With the Wind” plantation-style clubhouse. Named for its original architect, the 18-hole Donald Ross golf course was renovated in 1996 under the direction of Robert Weed. The 6,859-yard, par 73, traditional-style course has hosted numerous USGA events and is where 1999 Players Champion David Duval grew up golfing. Timuquana is a private club, open only to members and their guests.

Pablo Creek Club 5660 San Pablo Road S., Jacksonville, FL 32224 (904) 992-6900 Tom Fazio designed the Pablo Creek Club golf course in 1996 to embrace Northeast Florida’s terrain. In a gated community along the Pablo Creek Reserve, the private course is surrounded by mature pine forests and thick Northeast Florida ground cover to frame each hole. Being in the wetlands of Florida, the course’s challenges are a series of naturally occurring water hazards and the wildlife that come along with them. The par-72 course features Bermuda grass and measures 7,026 yards. Visitors are permitted to play with Pablo Creek members.

Need for Speed Adams Golf Speedline Super XTD Fairway Metal and Idea Super XTD Hybrid

The new Speedline Super XTD fairway metal features a multi-material construction: a titanium body fused with an ultra-thin formed titanium crown. With tungsten weights in the sole to lower the center of gravity and Adams’ Velocity Slot Technology for speed, the club is designed to shoot long at high speeds. The Idea Super XTD hybrid utilizes a brazed construction process. The crown and face are titanium, and the sole is stainless steel. Velocity Slot Technology is employed on both the sole and crown improving ball speed and launch angle while reducing spin.

A Little Forgiveness Goes a Long Way Wilson’s Ci11 Irons

The new Ci11 irons are perfectly designed for the aspirational and middle-range golfer looking to lower his handicap. The club maker has installed a one-piece, soft-response insert to dampen vibration on mis-hits. The irons are available with a trio of stock shafts: True Temper TX Flighted steel, Aldila VS Proto II graphite and Wilson’s own patent-pending Half & Half, which employs a technology using both graphite and steel that had success with baseball bats and is now used throughout the Wilson club line.

On Speed Dial TaylorMade Rocketballz Driver TaylorMade’s new Rocketballz Driver has one ultimate goal: speed. Its lightweight shaft and aerodynamic head shape were designed specifically to promote a faster swing speed for more distance. The clubface features an inverted cone technology to deliver distance even for off-center hits. The club’s Flight Control Technology dial at the base of the shaft allows the player to easily adjust the face angle and tune the loft to 1.5 degrees in either direction.

A Sound Improvement TaylorMade Rocketballz Irons TaylorMade has given its irons a new face — literally. The Rocketballz irons feature reengineered faces with “toe-bar” controls to keep shots straight. Their ultra-thin profile flexes freely to promote high ball speed. Even the sound of these new irons is satisfying with a new sound control system implemented in the design.

Finely Tuned Machine TaylorMade R11S Driver The TaylorMade R11S just may be the most in-tune driver yet. With three dimensions of customizable settings, golfers can set their desired loft, face angle and flight path. The first dimension increases or decreases the loft by 1.5 degrees using Flight Control Technology to get added distance. The second dimension adjusts the face to one of five angles using Adjustable Sole Plate Technology. And the third dimension shifts the center gravity between the heel and toe using Movable Weight Technology to promote a fade or a draw on the flight path.

Well-Grounded Adidas Samba Introduced in the 1950s as a hard-terrain indoor soccer shoe, the Adidas Samba has been molded into an innovative golf shoe. The golf version retains the shoe’s original silhouette and the company’s famous three-stripe design, but now features a durable suede toe guard and a tan gum sole equipped with six cleats and an array of nubs for optimal traction. Adidas engineers also employed the company’s low-profile technology to get golfers’ feet closer to the ground for improved stability and support. The shoe is water-resistant and designed to be as durable as it is lightweight.

Going the Distance Bushnell Hybrid Laser GPS Can’t decide between a GPS or a laser rangefinder to get you closer to the tee? 5 RULES

or Selecting a Golf Course Cigar By Patrick Semmens, www.StogieGuys.com

T

H E G O L F C O U R S E I S A G R E AT P L A C E T O S M O K E A C I G A R . In what other sport is it acceptable for a competitor, with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, to light up a fine stogie mid-competition?

You’re outdoors in presumably good weather, free — for the most part — of smoking bans, and playing a game with very long pauses in action. Still, there are a few things to consider when selecting a smoke for the golf course.

1. Length

There’s really no cigar too long for golf. Even if you’re just playing nine holes, you’ll probably be out there for two hours. This is the time for those toros, double coronas, and Churchills that you otherwise might not have time to smoke.

2. Ring Gauge

There’s a lot to like about thin cigars, but generally you’ll want to shy away from lanceros, panatelas, and coronas. Thicker cigars tend to have a sturdier ash and a more consistent burn. On the course, you’ll want a smoke that won’t completely destruct if it gets dropped. Usually 50 ring gauge and larger can handle the rigor of the links better.

3. Strength

You don’t want a cigar so strong that you need to sit down while you smoke it. On the other hand, you also don’t want a cigar that’s too mild to enjoy without your complete attention. That’s why I usually grab medium to medium- to full-bodied smokes when I’m playing.

4. Price

While everyone has his own definition of an expensive cigar, I’m of the thought that pricey cigars have no place on the golf course. When you’re playing golf, a cigar is a secondary activity. That means it’s best to leave the special-occasion smokes at home and bring something that offers value instead.

5. Number

How many cigars to bring on the course is a matter of personal choice. With a typical round going five hours, two or three cigars is probably about right — and you’ll be glad you have that third one when you’re stuck behind a particularly slow group. In addition, think about bringing a few extra smokes to give to your fellow golfers. You may be slowing the group down with your horrible putting, but they’ll be glad you came along when they’re enjoying the fine cigars you generously shared with them.

Remember that smoking a cigar on the course won’t lower your handicap. But by following these few simple rules, you may find that you’ll enjoy your round of golf more than ever. with a PGA

Tour Academy Golf Pro By Jackie Hanson

T

he game of golf is conflicted. Part of the game requires power and distance, while other parts call for accuracy and finesse. Perfecting all the nuances of these polar opposite skills is an ever-evolving process. Dave Myers, golf pro at the PGA Tour Academy at TPC Sawgrass, works with golfers — both amateur and pro — daily on the every last detail to improve their performances. Here are the bad habits he sees most often and how he coaches his clients to correct them.

Bad Habit: Scooping to get more height on the launch

What’s Happening: Scooping is when the hands and club shaft get behind the club head as we swing. When this happens, we lose power. The Fix: Feel yourself hitting down on the ball with your hands and club shaft ahead of the club head. It may feel like you will hit the ball low, but with the dynamic loft of your club, the ball will launch high into the air.

Bad Habit: Shifting the hips laterally, also known as swaying

What’s Happening: Swaying occurs when we move our hips laterally off the golf ball in the backswing. This causes our weight to get too far behind the ball and makes it even harder to get our body and club back to the ball. The hips need to turn and coil rather than shift to the side. The Fix: Put a club on the outside of your back shoe and feel yourself twisting instead of swaying off the ball. If you feel yourself pressing against the club, you are swaying. Focus on turning the upper body, which will turn the hips naturally instead of moving them laterally off the golf ball.

Bad Habit: Putting with the wrists

The Fix: The engine of the putting stroke is the shoulders. The hands should stay very quiet. Put your hands together without a club and attempt to putt. Feel your shoulders moving back and forth without any hinging at the wrists. Practicing without your putter gets the forearms and shoulders involved as the primary engines of your stroke and eliminates the urge for any wrist movement.

Bad Habit: Not shifting your weight

What’s Happening: Just like in every sport, we need to use our weight for maximum force. To throw a ball, we need to load our weight to the back foot, then shift it forward and rotate the body toward the target. Many players load the weight in the back foot, but then leave the weight there as they attempt to swing through. This drains the momentum resulting in a powerless swing. The Fix:

Take a golf ball and throw it shifting your weight from the back foot to the front as you release. This weight shift should be the same in your golf swing.

Bad Habit: Relying on upper body strength

What’s Happening: The lower body and core are the power accumulators in the swing, and by using only the upper body and arms for power, we can only hit the ball so far. The Fix: Focus on turning your entire body toward the target. At the top of the backswing, start your transition down by turning your lower body first, then rotate both upper and lower body together toward the target. This creates a lot of speed without much effort. Feel your belt buckle and shirt logo turning toward your target together. At the end of your swing, both lower body and upper body should be facing the target. The PGA Tour Academy at TPC Sawgrass provides personalized golf instruction for all skill levels. It’s Not Just the Golf Course That’s Green by Tracy Margol

year, THE PLAYERS Championship returns to the Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra bringing a slew of media, CEOs, corporate clients, and diehard golf enthusiasts. The tournament generates a positive economic impact to the area that’s as solid as Paul Azinger’s venerable 9-iron hole-in-one on the 17th. With a typical PLAYERS week generating over $150 million in revenue, coupled with the area’s global exposure, holding the championship in Ponte Vedra is like having the Super Bowl here every year.

Both Jacksonville and St. Augustine airports, hotels, bars and restaurants claim it’s their busiest week of the year. “TPC week is definitely our busiest week,” said Derek Prince, owner of Bogey Grille in Ponte Vedra Beach. “Our restaurant is right outside the back gate of the 17th hole, so if it rains, people come to eat and drink until it stops. It’s a wonderful week … lots of golf fans and lots of fun.”

casts of the event reach over 700 million households worldwide, many of which are homes of decision-makers who can directly impact North Florida. During the tournament, more than 350 corporate business clients invest in a myriad of hospitality and sponsorship programs ranging from supporting our troops through Military Appreciation Day to six-figure customer development initiatives. In addition, many Fortune 500 companies bring employees and clients to the First Coast for the event, including PricewaterhouseCoopers, who brings in 500 executive-level guests from around the world, as THE PLAYERS Championship is their number one client-entertainment venue. Local businesses, charities, and the military are well aware of the tournament’s impact, and with over 200,000 visitors walking the course throughout tournament week, everyone benefits.
