DON SAGE’S DOMINION By: Lithakazi Mhaga

thatha born Hip Hop artist producer and DJ, Don Sage, will bring his explosive flair and energy to long time Hip Hop, and South African award winning platform, the Soul Clap Sessions on May 14th in Coffee Bay. Don Sage, given name Brian Jennings, spoke to the Pondoland Times from the comfort of his home and recording studio based in Norwood, Mthatha. “It means a lot (headlining the Soul Claps). The brand has been a part of EC Hip Hop for a while now and I've been blessed to have taken part a couple of times. Getting the honour of headlining it is beyond words,” he said about his coming performance. Like all artists, he has been working on new material and is looking forward to sharing it and crowd favourites like Rain.

When commenting on what the audience should expect, he responded, “It's going to be a mix of both old songs and new material.” After the year long lockdown on the creative industries, he is looking forward to more performances in the future. “Well everything is still opening up so I'll see as the time goes...,” he said. Don Sage, who has helped keep Mthatha Hip Hop alive, through his craft, for 15 years also runs ISC concepts, a media company specialising in graphic and web design. This is has been his main source of income for two years, although he has been a graphic designer for 10 years. “I run a media company that keeps the boat afloat. Juggling everything is hard and it can get quite exhausting but it's worth it,” he said about the complexities of being an artist and business owner.

The Practical Implications and Effects of: The Recognition of Customary Marriages Act 120/1998 A customary marriage can be defined as a marriage that has been negotiated, celebrated and concluded in terms of any indigenous law or practice in South Africa. A distinction should be drawn between official customary law and “living” customary law. Official customary law can be described as the rules which the courts set out and the statutes which have been put in place such as the Recognition of Customary Marriages and other statutes mentioned above. Living customary law on the other hand, can be described as the law of the people living in accordance with certain customary practices.

Curran and Bonthuys argue that even though statutes and precedents governing customary law have been put in place, the living customary law continues to oppress the official customary law. Official customary law and the living customary law are not always aligned, and in some instances they may clash with each other. Although South African law says that women should have equal access to property, this is not always the case in reality, and it can be hindered by wider social discourses, institutions, and systems that still support patriarchal organization. Following that, the woman would move to her nowproperty husband's and be given land of her own to raise her children (which she will not own but will be able to use because she is a member of the family). Marriage patterns are evolving, according to one of the project's main results. In fact, according to a survey of 1,000 households in Msinga conducted by the Community Agency for Social Enquiry (CASE), only 26% of women reported marrying in the typical, "proper" sense (known as Ugidile). A much higher percentage of women (54%) said they moved in with their husbands after their families paid 'damages' for her being pregnant out of wedlock (known as Uganile). Some women (18%) said they had never married, while 14 percent said they were married in another way (the meaning of which is unclear). While marriage is no longer performed in the most conventional or customary way, this does not mean that traditional conceptions on who should own the land, specifically men, are being broken. Meet Wandile Zitumane, Bizana’s Serial Electrician By: Quan Dambuza

The years of experience in the electrical field, prompted him to identify the neglected business opportunity which would directly impact the lives of the residents of Bizana. A lack of an electrical store/warehouse in Bizana town compels the contractors, hardware owners and other electricians to order and purchase the electrical items in distant towns such as Durban and Margate. “With that in mind I developed an idea to fill this service gap by opening an electrical store, which will not only supply the goods and services but create jobs for local residents.” – says Wandile The material to be sold is going to be sourced from afar electrical product suppliers such as Northside electrical suppliers and ABR electrical suppliers stored in bulk for easy access to local customers. In an endeavour to give back, the store will accommodate the local college Site to Campus Electrical Engineering Students in-need for in-service training.

he proposed electrical store will maximize the opportunity fir Wara’s Electrical to impact the black lives, by creating jobs for rural youth with diverse educational background.

Coming from a previously disadvantage community, Zitumane defied all odds by proposing to open a 100% Youth black owned, Electrical store. Driven by transformation and equal distribution of wealth.

ALFRED NZO DISTRICT LAUNCHES ITS PHASE ONE OF COVID-19 VACCINE

Bizana Born Music Producer and DJ Mpumelelo “Rawnik” Qwathekane Set To Release His First Project Under Dubai Based Recording Label, Afrocentric Records.

By: Mawande Genu

onday, 03 May 2021, Executive Mayor of Alfred Nzo District Municipality, Cllr. Sixolile Mehlomakhulu, joined by Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, Cllr. Mafumbatha, launched the district wide COVID-19 Vaccine Rollout.

he Wrist Watch EP is the first complete studio project from Bizana born House Producer and DJ, Mpumelelo Qwathekane, popularly known by his stage name, Rawnik. The project is set to be released on the 14th of May this year under Dubai based recording label, Afrocentric Records. No stranger in the music industry, Mpumelelo has worked with some of the most notable names in the industry which include Bizana born hit maker, DJ Mzi who was signed under DJ Cleo’s recording label, Wheel of Steel at the time, Zimbabwean guitarist, Sylent Nkqo and renowned vocalist, Tsepo King just to name but a few. Besides the list of features on the EP, the producer’s background in the music industry and the fact that a recording label in Dubai was interested in releasing the project made me more interested in listening to the EP. I am definitely no stranger to the producer’s music having ran into some of his singles including the master piece he made with Tsepo King titled, Time For The Moment. The four tracked project features two artists,

Tech Producer, Candyman on a track titled Cerberus and the husky vocals of Bizana born vocalist, Bradley Tan on the title track, Wrist Watch. If you love Afro Tech and dance music, the EP is definitely worth having on your play list. The EP opens with the title track, Wrist Watch featuring Bradley Tan, a beautiful love story that will have you dancing your feelings away in every second of the song. Track two titled, Ceberus features well established Afro Tech producer, Candyman from Drummetic Soul with the third song on the EP titled, Intliziyo, sampling the vocals of the legendary Afro Jazz musician, Caiphus Semenya from his hit song Nomalanga and ending the EP with the drum-metal heavy track titled Inception a more fitting listen that eases you out of the project. The project will be released for streaming and download on the 14th of May 2021 through Afrocentric and I would, personally advise all house music fanatics to look out for the project on Mpumelelo’s social media pages, Rawnik ZA.

This comes after the first batch of Johnson & Johnson Vaccines arrived in the District as Government resumes its COVID-19 vaccination rollout. The total number of vaccines received is 2400 and is to be administered to Healthcare Workers in the District for the next two weeks. Previously Healthcare Workers were taken to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha for vaccination; this is the first time that the vaccines arrive and are stored in facilities in Madzikane Hospital and Oliver and Adelaide Tambo Regional Hospital. "Alfred Nzo District Municipality is pleased that these long awaited vaccines will be stored and administered within our own facilities in the District. We have been making this plea to the Provincial Command Council that we want to rollout our own vaccine in order to fast track the process and save lives", Cllr. Mehlomakhulu said. The Executive Mayor also handed over new smart phones to be used by the 800 Community Based Healthcare Workers in the registration of phase two beneficiaries of the vaccine rollout scheduled to commence on the 17th of May 2021. "As Government it is our wish to speed up the vaccination process before the country hits a possible third wave. Our intention is to save as much lives as possible. Speaking to the media Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality, Cllr. Mafumbatha, said "we are here to ensure that our people are safe and the top

possible. Therefore, phase one of the vaccine rollout will run concurrently with the phase two registration which will target people over 65 years, as well as essential workers. We don't want any vacuum and unnecessary delays in the process to help us quickly reach herd immunity", Cllr. Mehlomakhulu added. Speaking to the media Winnie MadikizelaMandela Local Municipality, Cllr. Mafumbatha, said "we are here to ensure that our people are safe and the top priority are Healthcare Workers as they have been the primary ones on the frontline against this devastating pandemic. Other people will b vaccinated on the second and third phases of the vaccine rollout". Among the first Healthcare Workers to be vaccinated was the District Director for the Department of Health in the Alfred Nzo District, Mrs. Nomkhitha Mtonjana. She was enthusiastic in expressing her excitement at finally getting her own jab and leading by example in the vaccination process. "I want to show the people that the vaccine is safe and lead by example by being among the first people to get their jab. I also want to motivate our Healthcare Professionals and the community at large to choose vaccine than to risk their lives", Mrs. Mtonjana said. Currently the storage facilities are in Oliver & Adelaide Tambo Regional Hospital and Madzikane Hospitals, but plans are in place to have Taylor Bequest Hospital as another distributor by the end of this week. The vaccine will be rolled out in three phases, beginning with healthcare workers, followed by the vulnerable and elderly and will conclude with the general public. We urge members of the public to remain patient with the process.

SAFA Has Named Belgian Mentor Hugo Broos as The New Bafana Bafana Coach on a Reported Five Year Contract By: Mawande Genu

In what can be termed as a shock turn of events to many fanatics of the beautiful game in the country, SAFA finally announced Hugo Broos as the new man at the helm of the National team on Wednesday, May 5, 2021 after failing to secure both their preferred candidates. It was first reported that the footballing body was engaged in talks with Zimbabwean born mentor, Carlos Queiroz last month before postponing their press conference siting COVID-19 restriction as the reason for the delay. Rumors tipping former Bafana Bafana striker and current AmaZulu FC mentor as the next in line for the post were rife but it is believed that talks broke down after SAFA failed to meet the demands of the Mzansi legend which included bringing in some members of his current technical team at Usuthu. Queiroz, who was believed to be SAFA’s most preferred candidate is believed to have turned down the opportunity due to SAFA’s refusal to let him bring in his own technical team that included a Technical Director of his own choosing after he had a bad experience in his first stint with Bafana Bafana in the World Cup qualifiers after a reported run in with the then Technical Director who told him he was his boss which prompted his resignation just after he qualified for the FIFA World Cup in Japan that year. Who is Hugo Broos? We Take a Look at The Belgian’s Coaching Background Born, Henri Hugo Broos in Belgium, the sort after mentor started his career in football as central defender at RSC Anderlecht at the age of Eighteen and enjoyed an illustrious career that saw him playing for several teams in his native country including Belgian giants, Club Brudge and has been capped 24 times in the Belgian National team. In his playing career he has won several trophies including Three European Championships with RSC Anderlecht and has won a total of five Belgian Cups in his career. He retired from professional football as a player in 1988 and began his coaching career in 1991 as Head Coach at Club Brugge, winning the Championship twice and going on to win the Belgian Cup three times in a tenure that lasted for seven years before moving on to coaching RSC Anderlecht between 2002 and 2005 where he managed to get the team into the Uefa Champions League and also won the domestic league during his stint at the club.

Belgian coach Hugo Broos is the new Bafana Bafana head coach. Image: Frank Abbeloos/Isosport/MB Media/Getty Images The South African Foot Ball Association was Expected To Announce South African Football Legend and Current AmaZulu FC Head Coach, Benny McCarthy as The New Head Coach of The National Team After Extensive Discussions. After The South African Football Body had Failed to Acquire Both Their Top Candidates We Take a Look at Who The New Man in Charge Is.

After his spell came to an end at RSC Anderlecht he moved on to coach KRC Genk before moving on to coaching Panserraikos in the Greece league where he was unable to save the team after achieving relative success at the club. Broos has won the prestigious Belgian Coach of the Year accolade four times in his coaching career and has won the African Cup of Nations during his stint with the Cameroonian team in 2017. SAFA will be banking on Hugo Broos’ wealth of experience and the fact that he has tasted success in Africa.
