A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

While the official “season” is winding down, our programming continues to blossom with new initiatives for Spring! Thank you to all of you who made Green Market Pompano Beach and Old Town Untapped so successful this season. We hope you’ll enjoy these events again before they go on summer hiatus. Green Market runs through April 22nd and the last Old Town Untapped is May 5th

In the “news” department, we’re thrilled that famed jazz musician Jean Caze will be taking the stage at Ali Cultural Arts. Often compared to Miles Davis, Caze will celebrate Haitian Heritage Month with a musical experience unlike any in jazz, past or present. Another program celebrating Haitian heritage is “Konpa Pompano!,” a fun-filled event for everyone who wants to learn new dance moves and party with a live band and DJ.

Nurturing emerging artists is a key part of our mission, and we’re proud that we will be making an album featuring performers who attend our popular open mic night, Lyrics Lab. We will have talent scouts at the April, May and June events, so bring your best songs, poems and beats for a chance to be discovered!

During this past season its been an honor to watch the growth of the creatives who participated in our revamped Artists in Residence (AiR) program at BaCA. We will be celebrating their success with Fín- A Culminating Party and Exhibit in June, and we hope you will join us! With this group’s launch into the next phase of their careers, we are thrilled to seek participants for the new AiR class, so please encourage your artist friends to apply.

We’re always adding more programming so please visit our website and follow us on social media. Something wonderful is (always) happening in Pompano Beach . . . Happy Spring!

Sincerely,

Dance Theatre, Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre, Jubilation Dance Ensemble, and Olujimi Dance Theatre. Woods extensive dance studies and performances have covered a vast variety of forms including ballet, tap, Afro-Haitian, Salsa, Ring Shout dances of the Congo, Senegal, and many other styles. During her residency at BaCA, she will complete a new dance work entitled “Rituals,” an exploration of what “thriving” is and can be.

brings an international flair to her paintings having studied and practiced art in her native China, and later in France and the US. Fascinated with Asian culture, ancient mythology, and her inner world of

dreams and memories, her paintings often incorporate these themes and blend styles of Surrealism and Expressionism. During her residency, Liu plans to create a large-scale project of several paintings, entitled The Sign, which will feature feminine figures with Chinese cultural elements. This project will honor Chinese women who are constrained by their culture and society’s bondage in different eras and will explore the women’s different responses to their circumstances.

Paint and Sip: Painting Outside of the Box

Every 4th Thursday of each month. This event combines a professionally-led painting class with a high-energy environment and a few drinks. The content of the classes will be various painting techniques and master copies taught by current BaCA Artist in Residence Gregory Dirr.

Each ticket includes a free drink. Paint, brushes, and smocks will be provided. Participants don’t need to know a single thing about painting prior to showing up. Our instructor will talk them through everything they need to know, from how to mix paint colors to what sort of brush strokes to use. Want to customize your painting? Borrowed Light

April 7 - May 24: A solo exhibition by Christian Feneck, explores the relationship of vision and the understanding of space by using architectural perspective conventions in combination with a layered series of translucent color fields. This body of work is a study of the interaction of the various types and amounts of colors, along with the seemingly infinite degrees of change between them. Feneck skillfully creates movement and depth, by forming layered compositions with widely varied spatial conditions. In this way, his work highlights the fundamental role perception plays in our engagement and understanding of the world. It is the truth of our experience. Our perception is our reality.

POMPANO BEACH PUBLIC ART PROGRAM

Since the Public Art Committee’s inception in 2012, the City has acquired sculptures, murals, wrapped traffic boxes and, most recently, a mural installed on the first two floors of the exterior southeast corner stairwell of the Pompano Pier Parking Garage. The mural, entitled Reef Life, is by Taylor Smith, also known as DREAMWEAVER. DREAMWEAVER stated the location presented an exciting opportunity to create an immersive piece of public art just across from the bustling Fishing Village. She was inspired by the coastal culture of Pompano Beach. To create a cohesive appearance, Reef Life is similar in color scheme to the other mural located on the Pier Parking Garage titled A Place I’d Rather Be. The complex and interdependent nature of coral reef ecosystems are the foundation of life underwater and a unique characteristic of Pompano Beach attracting visitors from all walks of life. In addition to this new Mural, while visiting the beach you will find many other Public Art installations such as Painted Pompano sculptures, 99 tiles along the sidewalk entitled SEA LIFE, and Mechan H2O, a sculpture that resembles a scuba diving robot. For more information on the City’s Public Art Program, and to be involved in upcoming art projects, please contact Laura Atria 954.545.7800, #3813, or go to the City’s Public Art website at www.pbpublic.com and sign up for our Artist Network.

The City’s Public Art Committee meets every third Thursday at 5 pm at the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. Meetings are open to the public and all are welcome to join!
