A LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR Hi Friends! The cultural season is in full swing, and the Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department has an eclectic array of programming to keep you entertained! 2024 starts off on a high note as legendary jazz musicians hit the beach this January for Jazz Fest! Dip your toes in the sand, enjoy culinary treats from your favorite restaurants, all while listening to Grammy Award-winning jazz legend Branford Marsalis, famed singer Lisa Fischer & Grand Baton, and sax players Najee and David Sanchez. The festival kicks off January 18th at the Cultural Center with a special concert featuring the Valerie Tyson Band. Being a cultural incubator is a core element of our mission and our dynamic group of eight Artists in Residence (AiRs) at Bailey Contemporary Arts continue to make an impact on the community with monthly exhibitions during Old Town Untapped, interactive workshops, and exciting classes. We invite you to engage with these talented creatives and expand your artistic abilities! A list of fun-filled classes offered by the AiRs, including a workshop on how to paint murals, is on page 6. I believe art unites us all, and our team loves immersing the City with programs that connect residents of all ages. We are excited to introduce our new Gazebo Concert Series in Palm Aire, showcase talented young musicians at the Children in the Arts Piano Competition, and continue our expansive live theatre offerings with an extended run of The Secret Comedy of Women, considered the ultimate “girl’s night out” show. We also have a full roster of programs celebrating Black History Month including a hip-hop dance class, a film screening, Jazz Reflections featuring Nicole Yarling, and T.M. Pride’s Emancipation Blues, which interprets the trials and triumphs of African-Americans through dance. Additional Black History Month information is on page 22. We hope this overview has intrigued you! Our goal is to create programming that entices, entertains, and educates. We encourage you to visit our website, pompanobeacharts.org to find out what’s next, and be sure to sign up for our newsletters so you don’t miss special offers! Looking forward to seeing you at the next event! Sincerely,

Ty Tabing, Cultural Affairs Director

ARTISTS N RESID E N C E PROGRAM

2023-2024 Bailey Contemporary Arts Artists in Residence (AiR) Program

The City of Pompano Beach Cultural Affairs Department is delighted to continue celebrating the 2023/2024 class of Artists in Residence (AiR) at the historic Bailey Contemporary Arts Center (BaCA). The AiR Program provides artists with studio space to create new work, collaborate with fellow resident artists, and engage with our community. This dynamic and diverse group of artists will be in residence though June, and we will present each as an “Artist of the Month,” offering them the opportunity to showcase their work and create unique programs to attract art lovers to BaCA.

Walter O’Neill had been a painter for over 30 years, exhibiting his oil and fresco paintings in group and solo exhibits in New York, Maine, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore. In 2017, his artistic focus changed after taking a clay class and now ceramics is his

primary art form. The Deerfield Beach resident has exhibited his work at ArtServe in Fort Lauderdale, Gallery 21 in Wilton Manors, Sugar Sand Community Park in Boca Raton, and in several venues as a member of the LGBTQ arts group ArtsUnitedFlorida.

Because, despite what we may believe, it is still possible to say everything. All it takes is a little delicacy.

Since the Public Art Committee’s inception in 2012, the City has acquired sculptures, murals, wrapped traffic boxes, and even created an underwater sculpture garden. Over that past year, the Committee has been working with Brodin Studios to create a “bust” to honor the late Hazel Armbrister. Ms. Armbrister is an icon in Pompano Beach. She originally arrived in Pompano in the 1950’s. She was a farmworker, an educator, and a historian. She was named City Historian by the Pompano Beach City Commission in 2017 and was instrumental in saving the Ali Building as well as founding Rock Road Restoration Historical Group, Inc. The artwork will consist of a bronze bust in her likeness and will be installed in the Hazel K. Armbrister Courtyard located at the Ali Cultural Arts Center. The artwork is set to be installed in 2024.
