ESTATE and “FAMILY” PLANNING The following workshops are taught by an attorney.

The Truth about Estate Planning (aka Estate Planning Essentials) (1.5 hrs.) Everyone has an “estate plan” whether they know it or not regardless of whether their assets are generous or modest. It occurs every time you create a joint title on a deed or name a beneficiary on an account. Effective estate planning involves creating a combination of directives from wills, trusts, and healthcare proxies, to authorizing others to manage affairs during incapacity and at death. The number and type of directives can be complex or simple, depending on your needs, goals, and budget. The key to good estate planning is making sure your plan is complete and understanding how each directive supports or undermines your overall intentions. Plans with gaps or conflicts can require court involvement to dictate what happens to you and your affairs. Attendees will learn about the core directives every person should have to protect themselves. They will get an overview of the various legal directives used in estate planning and the role each plays in an overall estate plan— whether the plan is geared toward protecting minors, avoiding nursing home costs, or saving estate taxes. They will leave with a worksheet that helps them rate their existing plan for effectiveness. Th 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Sept. 11, 2014 Class fee $35 ............Materials fee $0 .............Total $35

Nuts & Bolts of Trusts (1.5 hrs.) Trusts can be one of the most useful and cost-effective legal tools to help people maintain control over their assets during good health, illness and at death—without court costs or delays. Unfortunately, most people, including financial advisors, only think of trusts in terms of saving estate taxes. While this is one benefit of trusts, trusts can also provide many more protections such as shielding inheritances for beneficiaries with failed marriages, bad judgment, creditors, or special needs or those with business interests. This workshop gives an overview of how trusts work, the pros and cons and costs, when to consider using trusts and what should be included in the trust provisions. It covers the Trust Protections SpectrumTM and various asset protection options trusts can provide during the trustmaker’s and beneficiaries’ lifetimes. Th 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Sept. 25, 2014 Class fee $35 ............Materials fee $0 .............Total $35

Special People, Special Planning (1.5 hrs.) This workshop will provide an overview of the fundamentals every family needs to consider when planning for the future of a person with special needs. Attendees will learn about federal disability programs; guardianships; wills, trusts, and the essential legal directives the family must have as well as the consequences of failing to formally plan; how to keep the plan current; and the reasons for “letters of instruction”. Attendees will understand the types of advisors to consult, what to ask and how to organize information to ensure their plan will take care of the future needs of the loved one’s special needs. Th 7:00 PM – 8:30 PM Oct. 9, 2014 Class fee $35 ............Materials fee $0 .............Total $35

Loving Without a License (1.5 hrs.) Unmarried couples, who share households, co-mingle or jointly own assets can trigger many unintended legal and financial consequences that married couples don’t face. This workshop provides an overview of the things committed unmarried couples need to consider to protect themselves, especially during times of crisis such as disability or death. It covers areas where unmarried couples are vulnerable to unintended state default laws, taxes and loss of control, as well as guidelines for an “unmarried divorce” and division of property in the event that the relationship ends. Although families with a mix of “yours, mine, and ours,” such as children or others from prior relationships, are common in our society, their planning needs are unique, especially when a disability or death occurs within the family. Standard ways couples hold title to property or name beneficiaries can cause the “old” and “new” family members to be at odds and can even cause an unintended disinheritance. This workshop outlines the unique challenges and specific strategies of which blended families need to be aware to avoid planning gaps and conflicts. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the core legal directives every family should have to protect the people and things they cherish. While there is no “quick fix” for chronic allergies, she will describe many non-drug options to help to reduce the frequency and severity of “allergy flare-ups.” She will discuss the underlying causes of common allergic reactions to food ingredients, the environment, and ways to boost your pet’s immune system, reduce veterinary visits and increase quality of life (and sleep!) for the entire family. TALES FROM THE MORTUARY - A VICTORIAN WAKE At the Warehouse on the Canal in Canal Fulton, Ohio— HISTORICALLY HYSTERICAL (5 hrs.) Step back to an earlier time in America where superstitions about Ghosts ran rampant and to die unprepared or not be mourned properly was the greatest tragedy. You are invited (it was considered a great insult to ignore an invitation to a funeral) to be a mourner and to pay your respects to the dearly departed, SILAS H. ADKINNS. Remember that this is a “full” or “deep” mourning where it is suggested that everyone should wear black (it was believed that a Ghost could not see those dressed in black) where the fabric is to be dull without any sheen to reflect light and no jewelry is allowed and never wear anything new, especially shoes. The veil that can be worn is designed, “to protect family and friends from having the spirits of the deceased hover around relatives and then attach itself should the spirit look into your eyes.” You will participate in the WAKE; provide a testimony to the deceased; learn about the customs, oddities, and superstitions about Ghosts and see authentic items from the Victorian era. Because SILAS H. ADKINNS was from a small family and in order to properly mourn with an adequate number of people, professional mourners (like you) called “mutes” were used in the funeral procession (practice your wailing and crying). When the funeral is over as mourners you will receive traditional gifts as keepsakes and favors. This is a totally customer interactive event where the customs and superstitions in earlier America were so crazy and bizarre that we call it, “Historically Hysterical” where it is difficult to keep a straight face. Note: we will ask for some volunteers of 4-5 people to be the grieving family of Silas that everyone will pay their respects too. A traditional style wake dinner/dessert will be served that will include coffee/ ice tea. NO DISCOUNTS Costumes encouraged! Depart: Saturday, Sept. 20, 2014, 5:30 PM from Polaris Career Center, 7285 Old Oak Blvd., Middleburg Hts. Return: 10:30 PM (Approximately) Cost per person: $89
