Th e th ak g izes CRANE M O O N Zhoshbon – Snow Snake Over the course of two weekends in January, 17 community participants carved and decorated their own snow snakes at the Center of History & Culture! Zhoshbon is a traditional Neshnabé winter game. The object of the game is for your snow snake to travel the furthest down the track. The tournament track starting point usually consists of a three-foot-high ramp of hard packed snow. The snow snake is a carved, polished, wooden pole that slides down a track. Snow snakes can vary in length, anywhere from two-seven-feet feet long, and they are approximately 1 to 2 inches in diameter. They are carved from a variety of hardwoods and treated with wax and oil. Each participant decorated their snow snake using wood burning and paint. The track itself is a shallow iced trough which gradually declines until it is at ground level. Snow snake throws have been recorded as traveling more than a mile in less than three minutes, some reaching speeds, clocked by Sports Illustrated, of 108 miles per hour in the first mile. Some of the group from our community who made their own snow snakes traveled to the Annual Snow Snake Games hosted by the Gun Lake Tribe. The categories for the competition range from children to elders. One member of the Pokagon Band group the won the competition with the fastest snow snake overall! Migwėtth to all who participated! – Nicole Holloway, Director of Center of History & Culture
