Student Excels with Educational Excellence Initiative By Sara Feguer
Back in June, Nola and our family started her 2nd grade homeschool Education Enrichment Initiative (EEI) project. After brainstorming ideas, we figured the Medicine Wheel would be the most interesting to study. One of the EEI requirements is to make the project accessible to the public to teach them something about Potawatomi culture and traditions. We think the best way we learn is by games! And so started our idea of “KSHEMNEDO” the Medicine Wheel board game, the real Game of Life. The EEI-required 10 hours of studying and creating the project came and went. It was FUN!! We watched all sorts of YouTube videos about the Medicine Wheel, read articles and books, and we got some help from the Culture Department and Education Department (thank you!). We decided the first few key elements (the circular shape of the board, the center being Kshemnedo, etc.). Our family played game after game after game.... adding and taking away different elements as we went. We made multiple boards with different designs and ways to play. We had the idea of incorporating the 7 Generations Principle by having to make your way through the game successively through each generation, always coming back to the center (Kshemnedo, the Please turn to page 18
