KEEPING YOU INFORMED We are delighted to share news and highlights of our 2023 fiscal year with you! Throughout this report, you will read about PNCB activities and accomplishments during October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2023, our fiscal yearend, including the latest updates on our forthcoming Adolescent Care certificate program, new eligibility pathways for the Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist (PMHS) exam, and other ways that PNCB is working for you. To begin, we have some exciting updates for our upcoming educational program to support adolescent care. As you may recall, in our 2021 strategic planning survey, 43% of respondents requested PNCB to focus on emerging competencies, including subspecialties. In early 2022, we asked about your needs and interests to inform the development of new programs. Respondents identified Adolescent Care and topics supporting care for this age group to be our next competency-building program. This past fiscal year, we made tremendous strides including gathering respected subject matter experts to help us develop the curriculum alongside our selected instructional design partner. Video and virtual reality are in the mix! Now we’re marching steadily toward our spring 2024 launch date to deliver PNCB’s first certificate program in Adolescent Care, and for those who wish to go the extra mile, a microcredential program in Adolescent Care. This new program will be a career and confidence game changer to help you support healthier lives for kids today so they can achieve their best possible futures. You can find more details about our new ACTivate: Adolescents Can Thrive program on page 9. We listened to faculty and other advanced practice nurses who want to earn the Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist (PMHS) credential but currently do not have the required number of clinical hours to apply for this exam. PNCB completed a study to explore alternate eligibility criteria for the PMHS exam, and we now offer three eligibility pathways for those interested in this credential. Learn more on page 10. Child and adolescent mental health remains at a crisis point in the United States, and the PMHS credential strengthens access to expert care for children, adolescents, and young adults experiencing developmental, behavioral, and mental health conditions. In the pages that follow, you’ll catch up on the full picture of PNCB’s fiscal year 2023 activities, including our newest continuing education, recipients of our awards and scholarships, the latest achievements of PNCB’s Institute of Pediatric Nursing (IPN) committee, our amazingly dedicated volunteers, and more! We’re excited for the innovation and resources that our new 2024 fiscal year will bring you—the pediatric nursing community—as we continue to work hard on your behalf to improve child health. Be sure to check www.pncb.org often to keep up with the latest updates to support your professional goals and practice.

COMING SOON! ADOLESCENT CARE PROGRAM PNCB has exciting news for you and your colleagues who provide care for adolescents! Join the email list here. Coming in 2024 is a new way to advance your competence, add a certificate and microcredential to your resume, and earn CE from PNCB. Whether you provide care for this age range now or want to start, our “ACTivate: Adolescents Can Thrive” program will be a confidence game changer. Help PNCB advance the mission of “A healthier world one child at a time” by improving your ability to provide care to adolescents. Now more than ever, adolescence is a critical time in a child’s development. Our focused curriculum will enhance your evidence-based knowledge about – and communication with – these soon-to-be adults. Adolescents benefit through access to care tailored to their unique needs. At PNCB, we strive to provide exceptional support for the nursing community so you can stay ahead of the curve in critical areas of pediatric healthcare. Adolescents require specialized care and attention, which is why our forthcoming program offers expert education and assessments to strengthen your knowledge. We partnered with a respected healthcare-focused instructional design firm to ensure a high-quality, engaging learning experience. Join us in our mission to improve the lives of adolescents and make a difference in the world of healthcare. Here are more details, including our progress and what you can expect: The program will launch with two education programs, each resulting in a certificate for successful completion and contact hours. Each program offers an optional additional assessment to earn a microcredential and digital badge. The first certificate program will be open to registered and advanced practice nurses, plus others interested in adolescent health, such as community stakeholders and interdisciplinary health care team members. Courses will focus on how the adolescent grows and develops, social and global factors impacting health and well-being, effective communication with adolescents and families/caregivers, and a video-based Teen Voices unit. The second certificate will take a deep dive into wellness, sexual health, behavioral and mental health, and safety, risk, and injury prevention. We will keep you updated as this project moves forward! Please reach out with any questions to info@pncb.org.

NEW PMHS ELIGIBILITY PATHWAYS Two new pathways are now open for meeting Pediatric Primary Care Mental Health Specialist (PMHS) exam eligibility. If you don’t have 2,000 clinical hours in pediatric developmental, behavioral, or mental health care (DBMH) in the past 5 years in primary care to meet the Traditional Pathway criteria, now you have options: Faculty Pathway: created especially for faculty who regularly teach and engage with DBMH content. This pathway will need only 1,000 pediatric DBMH hours worked in the past 5 years. Faculty will combine these hours with 10 points of accepted activities highlighted below and described in detail here. Specialty Program Pathway: also reduces the pediatric DBMH hours to 1,000 worked in the past 5 years and relies on completion of a targeted, approved program like KySS Online Mental Health Fellowship: Child and Adolescent (The Ohio State University), Pediatric Behavioral and Mental Health Program (Duke University), or the APRN Scholars Program in Developmental, Behavioral Pediatrics, Mental Health, and Complex Care (Almost Home Kids, an affiliate of Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago). A certificate of completion will need to be uploaded when applying. PMHS exam candidates documenting pediatric DBMH CE/CME or academic credit can use education completed before earning APRN licensure and certification. Academic credit and CE/CME used to meet exam eligibility requirements must be completed within the previous five years before submission of the exam application. These activities can be completed before or after earning APRN license and foundational certification. PNCB currently offers 20 hours of CE to support your learning needs. The PMHS exam is offered 4 times per year. See our exam eligibility webpage for all details including foundational certification and licensure requirements. Kids are in crisis. As an advocate for child, adolescent, and young adult emotional wellness, you are in a unique position to make a difference with PMHS-confirmed knowledge and confidence. Visit our website to learn more. We hope to see your application soon!

RESEARCH & PUBLICATIONS PNCB is committed to research and evidence-based practice. We released or contributed to studies that help inform the practice of pediatric nursing. For each of PNCB’s accredited exams, job task analysis research is required about every five years. In FY2023, PNCB completed this research for the CPNP-PC credential, which resulted in an updated CPNP-PC exam content outline. Similar research for the CPNP-AC credential commenced in summer 2023. PNCB completed another element of continuing competence research when we were able to validate a competency framework for PNPs. Study results will be announced in the near future to showcase how pediatric NPs advance and gain competence during their careers over time.
