In May 2024, PNCB unveiled ACTivate: Adolescents Can Thrive, a new competency-building certificate and microcredentialing program dedicated to adolescent care, health, and well-being to increase knowledge and skills for professionals and advocates who support youth in this age range. As the largest and most widely known organization for pediatric nursing certification, continuing education, and competency development, PNCB designed the ACTivate curriculum with experts to offer deep, meaningful learning for adults working with adolescents
ACTivate: Adolescents Can Thrive is an innovative, engaging program that helps participants build confidence and competence This unique program is completely dedicated to adolescents and the adults who serve them This includes advocates in public safety, education, and community service, and traditional health care providers – such as physicians, nurses, and advanced practice providers who work in pediatrics, behavioral and mental health, and emergency care
ACTivate offers these professionals the chance to earn certificates and microcredentials to develop or expand their expertise, and ultimately, to help youth lead healthier lives, as described by PNCB Board of Directors CPNPPC-at-Large Representative Anne Derouin, DNP, APRN, CPNP-PC, PMHS, FAANP. "Adolescence is a time of great change and risk," Derouin said. "It's also a window of opportunity for health professionals and others to establish trust and promote healthy habits that have implications for the rest of a teen's life. ACTivate empowers you to directly set adolescents up for success as they navigate today's challenges."
ACTivate consists of two separate programs – Core Concepts in Adolescence and Essential Knowledge in Adolescent Health & Well-Being Core Concepts in Adolescence offers in-depth modules that explore how adolescents grow and develop, as well as the social and global challenges they face, with a special focus on how to communicate effectively with teens Essential Knowledge in Adolescent Health & Well-Being builds on that knowledge with modules on adolescent wellness, sexual health, and safety, among others
To equip more professionals with the tools they need to best serve this critical population, ACTivate is available not only to nurses and nurse practitioners, but to all professionals who interact with this age group
"ACTivate delivers confidence, competence, and clarity regardless of your knowledge level in adolescent care or workplace setting," said PNCB CEO Sheri Sesay-Tuffour, PhD, FASAE, CAE, ICE-CCP, IOM. "With a sole focus on the needs of this age group and cutting-edge technology, this program benefits everyone, from the adults who complete the programs to the adolescents they ultimately support."

WHAT IS A CERTIFICATE PROGRAM? WHAT IS A MICROCREDENTIAL? HOW IS A CERTIFICATE PROGRAM DIFFERENT FROM BOARD CERTIFICATION?
Certificate programs offer bite-sized learning at your own pace You’ll grow your knowledge about a specific topic by accessing education, then pass assessments to confirm what you learned
A microcredential is earned by passing an assessment, in which you demonstrate knowledge in a specific skill or specific area of practice The focus is targeted and narrow in scope
With board certification, candidates meet eligibility criteria and bring knowledge to an examination Upon passing the test for a rigorous body of knowledge, a credential is earned and corresponding letters can be added behind your name.
Microcredentials and certificate programs are a fast-growing method to demonstrate knowledge and mastery of a specific topic and field Our programs are immersive, effective confidence-builders that ultimately make a difference for adolescents Enrolling in ACTivate shows your employer that you are committed to delivering the best support to adolescents you encounter in your role As part of your plan to enhance your knowledge and skills, download and personalize this justification letter to seek your employer’s financial backing.
No, there are no eligibility requirements to enroll in ACTivate Whether you are a health care team member or interact with adolescents in communities or schools, if your work supports the care and well-being of adolescents, ACTivate may be the right learning opportunity for you
ACTivate offers education that will help everyone who interacts with adolescents to develop or expand their expertise to help youth lead healthier lives! No matter how you interact with adolescents, ACTivate can take your level of comfort and expertise to the next level wherever and however you support adolescents
Absolutely! Not only will you receive the same educational experience that your future peers do, the certificates, microcredentials, and digital badges will help your resume and employment applications shine.

Job Task Analysis
For each of PNCB’s accredited exams, job task analysis (JTA) research is conducted approximately every five years. Job analysis research uses both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to survey actively practicing nurses or nurse practitioners who hold the credential. Respondents rate how frequently tasks are performed in the work setting, and how important each one is to achieving outcomes for the pediatric population. Knowledge areas, procedures performed, and clinical conditions seen are also rated. Study elements that meet established criteria are then used to update the content outline.
In FY2023, PNCB completed this research for the CPNP-PC credential, which resulted in an updated CPNPPC exam content outline Similar research for the CPNP-AC credential commenced in summer 2023, leading to an updated exam content outline that was published in July 2024

PNP Competency Framework
As part of PNCB’s multi-year initiative on continuing competence, PNCB completed a competency framework for CPN certificants in 2020, and one for CPNP-AC or CPNP-PC certificants in 2023. The goal of each framework was to better understand how certificants progress in their professional role over time. How does competence change for each group as one advances in their career? For each framework, role-based competency areas with exemplars and behavioral indicators were validated for use.

PNCB's Institute of Pediatric Nursing (IPN) Committee has made significant strides to address the evolving needs of pediatric nursing professionals through strategic partnerships, workforce development initiatives, and leadership development programs Key accomplishments include:
Establishing PNCB as a Leader: The IPN Committee continues to successfully represent PNCB as a leading organization in pediatric healthcare by developing strategic partnerships and advocating for the value of pediatric nursing Five abstracts were developed and are in the submission process for presentations in 2025 They include conferences organized by the Society of Pediatric Nurses, International Council of Nurses, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, International Family Nursing Association, and a potential for a three-part series with the Journal of Pediatric Nursing in early 2025
Supporting the Workforce: IPN conducted a Future of Pediatric Nursing Survey to identify challenges and opportunities for improvement last fall. Through Career Pathways, the IPN Committee has provided information for pediatric nurses to develop their leadership skills and take on leadership roles within the field, featuring different career options and opportunities.
Developing Pediatric Nursing Leaders: The committee is developing the Guided Circles program to provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for emerging pediatric nurses.
In 2024, IPN members presented on key topics at national conferences, including workforce initiatives and educational resources:
"I feel hopeful": Workforce and Leadership Initiatives to Support Pediatric Nurses” at the SPN 34th Annual Conference in Phoenix, Arizona
Introducing an Educator’s Guide to Pediatric Nursing Career Pathways at the SPN 34th Annual Conference in Phoenix, Arizona
