The Perlman Music Program/ Suncoast (PMP/Suncoast) cultivates audiences of all ages through classical music performances and education outreach programs, including hosting the PMP Sarasota Winter Residency and presenting PMP Alumni: Around Town, and PMP Alumni: In Schools. Through its relationship with The Perlman Music Program (PMP), founded

Perlman Music Program Sarasota Winter Residency This is such an exciting time to be part of the Perlman Music Program Suncoast family.

Our Winter Residency and community outreach programs are educating and inspiring musicians and audiences of all ages. We could not be more proud!

Because of the generosity of our entire community, the Perlman Music Program Suncoast has grown from a small group of donors—originating with our founders Dottie Baer Garner and Dr. David Klein—to its own 501(c)(3) under the stewardship of Michael Shelton.

The very large and generous lead gift by Mickey and Marty Fine made it possible for us to go out into the community and bring in the passionate supporters that we have had, and continue to have, since the debut of the PMP Sarasota Winter Residency, 15 years ago.

Super Strings brings together Florida string players, ages 8-18, from throughout the state to play a musical composition with the PMP string orchestra under the direction of internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor, Itzhak Perlman. Super Strings musicians audition and participate in a preparatory workshop led by Sarasota-based music educators. Winter Residency Founded by Toby Perlman, and with a world-renowned faculty including her husband, internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman, The Perlman Music Program partners with PMP/Suncoast to present a 17-day winter residency. This intensive program offers unparalleled musical training for students ages 12-20+ who play the violin, viola, cello and bass; an experience that changes the lives of these students forever.

The public is invited to attend approximately 20 free events, including orchestra and chorus rehearsals, master classes, and recitals. Most events take place in the heated performance tent on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. The program culminates with the Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House.

PMP/Suncoast brings alumni of The Perlman Music Program to Sarasota and Manatee counties to present hour-long, interactive performances for elementary, middle and high school students as well as after-school programs and special needs schools. PMP alumni are young, dynamic professional musicians (combined concert artists and teachers) who enjoy performing for and interacting with young audiences.

Performances take place in assembly and music classroom settings at no charge to schools. Program goals include engaging students through interactive live music performances, encouraging students to start or continue studying music and motivating string players to grow their own musical skills.

YOUR GUIDE TO THE PMP SARASOTA WINTER RESIDENCY (Frequently asked questions)

YEARS!

I have some accessibility issues. Will I be able to enjoy this experience? We want everyone to feel welcome! We have: a public address system, so speakers from the stage can be heard; golf carts to shuttle people back and forth from the parking lot and restrooms; a cement walkway which runs through the tent and a designated floor section for those using walkers and wheelchairs; and accessible parking and restrooms. If you have specific issues that you want to discuss, please contact our office at 941-955-4942.

What if I get hungry? Is there food available? We sell light snacks, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and water in the tent.

I have young children. Can I bring them? All ages are welcome.

There are family seating sections near the stage so children can see the musicians. To respect both artists and audiences, we do ask that you use discretion and exit the tent should a child become fussy or create distractions.

What is the difference between a free ticket and an E-ticket?

Tickets enable early entrance to free events in the tent, up to 30-minutes before start time. (Non-ticket holders are admitted 15-minutes before an event.) Free tickets are distributed to the public for in-person pick-up in early December. $7.50 E-Tickets are available online. Members and Sponsors do not require tickets for early entrance.

Special event tickets ($10-$80) are also available for purchase online.

What is the difference between a sponsor and a member? We are deeply grateful to the supporters of our program who help us bring these extraordinary musical events to the public at no charge. Sponsorship begins with a gift of $625, and entitles the donor to VIP seating in front, tickets to the Celebration Concert and Celebration Dinner, and many other benefits. Membership begins with a gift of $75, and benefits include: early entrance to the tent, access to cushioned member seating, Student Social Invitations, and discounted concert tickets. Interested? Visit us during events or call Kurt Rachwitz, Development Director, at 941-350-2338.

What is the lanyard for? Your membership and sponsorship entitles you to enjoy early entrance and sit in designated seating in the tent. No tickets required! Please wear your lanyard so our volunteer ushers can guide you to the proper area.

Why should I go to the Celebration Concert if I have been hearing the daily rehearsals? There is nothing like the excitement of the actual performance. To experience the music in a concert setting and to support these young artists is a deeply satisfying way to celebrate the PMP Sarasota Winter Residency.

PMP Winter Residency Faculty & Fellows Rachel Calin

Adam Meyer

A distinguished performer and graduate of The Juilliard School, Rachel Calin can be heard on the Canary Classics, Sony Masterworks, and Naxos recording labels as a chamber musician.

She is currently on the faculty at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music and Principal Bassist for Sejong Soloists.

A violist and alumnus of The Perlman Music Program’s Chamber Music Workshop, Adam is the Associate Dean and Director of the Music Division at The Juilliard School.

Collaborative Pianist Jun Cho is the collaborative pianist to Itzhak Perlman’s studios at The Perlman Music Program and The Juilliard School.

Cello Faculty

Soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, Clara Kim is on faculty at the Juilliard College, Juilliard PreCollege and Columbia University. She recorded for CRI, SNK Korea, and Albany Records and her book on cello method has been published under The Korea Economic Daily & Business Publications Inc.

Peter Klimo

Collaborative Piano Hungarian-American pianist Peter Klimo has been studying piano since the age of nine. In November 2014, Peter won 2nd prize in the 10th International Franz Liszt Piano Competition in Utrecht. Recent highlights include a tour with violinist Tessa Lark as well as concerto performances in Seoul, Los Angeles, and Budapest. Peter is currently pursuing his Doctoral degree at Eastman.

Violin Faculty An alumnus of The Perlman Music Program Summer Music School, Sean performs internationally and is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. Sean is also a faculty member of the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School.
