OUR PROGRAM The Perlman Music Program/ Suncoast (Perlman Suncoast) cultivates audiences of all ages through classical music performances and education outreach programs, including hosting the PMP Sarasota Winter Residency and presenting PMP Alumni: Around Town, and PMP Alumni: In Schools. Through its relationship with The Perlman Music Program (PMP), founded

Winter Residency Founded by Toby Perlman, and with a world-renowned faculty including her husband, internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor Itzhak Perlman, The Perlman Music Program partners with Perlman Suncoast to present a 17-day winter residency. This intensive program offers unparalleled musical training for students ages 12-20+ who play the violin, viola, cello and bass; an experience that changes the lives of these students forever.

Each year, the public is invited to attend approximately 20 free events, including orchestra and chorus rehearsals, master classes, and recitals. Most events take place in the heated performance tent on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. The program culminates with the Celebration Concert at the Sarasota Opera House.

Donations at all levels support the continuation of these programs.

Unique to Perlman Suncoast is the Super Strings program.

Super Strings brings together Florida string players, ages 8-18, from throughout the state to play a musical composition with the PMP string orchestra under the direction of internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor, Itzhak Perlman. Super Strings musicians audition and participate in a preparatory workshop led by Sarasota-based music educators. PMP Alumni: In Schools As part of our mission to educate and inspire generations of musicians and audiences, Perlman Suncoast brings alumni of The Perlman Music Program to Sarasota and Manatee county schools.

We present hour-long interactive performances for elementary, middle and high school students as well as after-school programs and special needs schools. PMP alumni are young, dynamic professional musicians (combined concert artists and teachers) who enjoy performing for and interacting with young audiences.

Performances take place in assembly and music classroom settings at no charge to schools. Program goals include engaging students through interactive live music performances, encouraging students to start or continue studying music and motivating string players to grow their own musical skills.

YOUR GUIDE TO THE PMP SARASOTA WINTER RESIDENCY (Frequently asked questions)

WINTER RESIDENCY

It’s cold outside. Will I be comfortable in the tent? Don’t worry, if temperatures drop, we have heaters that keep the tent warm. We suggest you wear layers of clothing to adjust for optimal comfort.

I have some accessibility issues. Will I be able to enjoy this experience?

We want everyone to feel welcome! We have: a public address system, so speakers from the stage can be heard; golf carts to shuttle people back and forth from the parking lot and restrooms; a cement walkway which runs through the tent and a designated floor section for those using walkers and wheelchairs; and accessible parking and restrooms. If you have specific issues that you want to discuss, please contact our office at 941-955-4942.

What if I get hungry? Is there food available? We sell light snacks, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and water in the tent.

I have young children. Can I bring them? All ages are welcome. There are family seating sections near the stage so children can see the musicians.

To respect both artists and audiences, we do ask that you use discretion and exit the tent should a child become fussy or create distractions.

What is the difference between a free ticket and an E-ticket?

Free tickets are distributed to the public at various locations throughout the community for in-person pick-up in early December. $7.50 E-Tickets are available online (24/7, up until the day of the event). Special event tickets ($10-$80) are also available for purchase online at PerlmanSuncoast.org.

NEW THIS YEAR, ticket holders for tent events receive first-come access to a special reserved seating section (note: limited seating available).

That said, plenty of general admission seats are available for ticket and non-ticket holders alike to enjoy!

What is the difference between a donor and a member? We are deeply grateful to all supporters who help us bring these extraordinary musical events to the public at no charge. In particular, donors giving at $625+ help underwrite the entire season of programming. In thanks, they receive access to VIP seating in front of the stage, tickets to the Celebration Concert and Dinner, and many other benefits. Membership begins with a gift of $85, and benefits include: access to member seating, Student Social Invitations, and discounted concert tickets. Every gift makes a difference! Interested? Visit us during events or call Elizabeth Power at 941-587-6216.

What is the lanyard for? Your Membership ($85+) or Annual Giving campaign gift ($625+) provides access to designated seating sections in the tent. No tickets required! Please wear your lanyard so our volunteer ushers can guide you to the proper area.

Why should I go to the Celebration Concert if I have been hearing the daily rehearsals? There is nothing like the excitement of attending the actual performance in a great hall, the Sarasota Opera House.

To experience the music in a concert setting and to support these young artists is a deeply satisfying way to celebrate the PMP Sarasota Winter Residency. Plus, your ticket purchase ($40-$80) supports Perlman Suncoast and keeps the music playing!

This season's Super Strings features 45 students (ages 10-18) from 15 counties across Florida, who play violin, viola, cello and bass.

Together they will perform the 1st movement of Felix Mendelssohn’s “String Sinfonia No. 2 in D Major,” onstage and side-by-side with the PMP String Orchestra under the baton of Itzhak Perlman!

WINTER RESIDENCY

Piano Collaborator Taiwanese pianist Chiao-Wen Cheng has performed as soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician throughout the United States and Asia. She is an Assistant Professor of Accompanying at the Eastman School of Music and collaborative pianist at The Perlman Music Program.

Jun Cho

Piano Collaborator Jun Cho is the collaborative pianist to Itzhak Perlman’s studios at The Perlman Music Program and The Juilliard School.

Clara Kim

Cello Faculty Soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, Clara Kim is on faculty at the Juilliard College, Juilliard PreCollege and Columbia University. She recorded for CRI, SNK Korea, and Albany Records and her book on cello method has been published under The Korea Economic Daily & Business Publications Inc.

Sean Lee

Violin Faculty An alumnus of The Perlman Music Program Summer Music School, Sean performs internationally and is a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant. Sean is also a faculty member of the Pre-College Division of The Juilliard School.

Merry Peckham

Associate Director & Chamber Music Faculty Merry Peckham is the Chair of College Chamber Music Program at the New England Conservatory of Music, where she coaches chamber music in both the College and Preparatory School.

Pianist Jinhee Park has built an international reputation as a versatile artist of both vocal and instrumental chamber music. She is a staff pianist at The Juilliard School, a vocal coach at numerous institutions, and is currently pursuing an Artist Diploma at Manhattan School of Music.

Itzhak Perlman

Violin Faculty & Orchestra Conductor Itzhak Perlman holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair at The Juilliard School.

Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, he has been awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the National Medal of Arts, the Medal of Liberty, and a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Toby Perlman has dedicated her talents to creating a personalized and intimate program that provides the valuable resources and musical training necessary to nurture remarkable talent.

WINTER RESIDENCY

Chamber Music Faculty Violinist Kenneth Renshaw has performed as soloist with orchestras internationally including the National Orchestra of Belgium, the China Philharmonic, and the Jenaer Philharmonie. Kenneth serves as Teaching Assistant to Itzhak Perlman and Li Lin at The Juilliard School, and chamber music faculty for PMP’s summer music school.

Zvi Plesser

Cello Faculty Renowned Israeli cellist and educator Zvi Plesser is Head of the String Department and Director of the Nazarian Chamber Music Program at the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance.

Carol Rodland Viola Faculty

Carol Rodland enjoys an international career as a concert and recording artist and teacher.

She is a member of the faculty at The Juilliard School and has previously held professorships at Berlin’s ‘Hanns Eisler’ Hochschule, at New England Conservatory, and at the Eastman School of Music.

Patrick Romano Chorus Master

Patrick Romano is the choral and music director at the Riverdale Country School in New York and at Sarah Lawrence College. He also conducts choir at The Juilliard School Pre-College Division.
