The whole idea that this environment is one that is welcoming to business and people can come and do business,” he added.Osinbajo also talked about creativity in governance and education.“Alot of that is tied to education that is really something that interests me the most; just using an example of something we did in the Northeast.

Insurgency: Gov. Zulum reassures Military of sustained support Gov. Babagana Zulum of Borno has reiterated his administration’s commitment to sustain support to the military and other security agencies in the fight against insurgency.Zulummade the declaration on Sunday in Monguno during his visit to the headquarters of Sector 3 of Operation Hadin Kai and Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in Kinnasara Cantonment, Monguno. Zulum, who congratulated the new Commander of the task force for his appointment, lauded the role of the task force in maintaining security in the border areas of northern Borno. He noted that the improvement in security in the area had led to return of displaced persons in the zone back to their ancestral homes, particularly in major towns like Baga, Cross Kauwa, and Mallam-Fatori. Receiving the governor, the Sector Commander, Brig. Gen. A. E Abubakar, thanked the governor for the solidarity visit to the command and assured him of the military’s commitment to secured lives and property of people of Borno and the nation in general.(NAN)

“When they talk about economy, we are often compared with smaller African countries, but there are 10 states in Nigeria that have bigger GDPs than those countries, it is a huge target market.”He also responded to the question about some inaccurate characterisation of Nigeria in sections of the international community.Thevice-president said it was important to constantly engage the international community to show them how we feel about the stereotypes.“Itcomes down to the work we do as government and people about the characterisation.

” He narrated how the Learning Centers in Maiduguri were“Istarted.visited Maiduguri, Borno in 2015, and I saw many children whose parents had been killed by the Boko Haram insurgents and in a place where they were; I saw about 49,500 of such children.

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo said he places high value on the virtues of integrity, transparency and social justice.Osinbajo’s spokesman, Laolu Akande, in a statement on Sunday in Abuja, said the vice-president interacted with a group of Harvard Business School students who visited him at the Presidential Villa.Numbering about a dozen, some of the students are Nigerians. The students, who are currently on an African excursion, asked questions about leadership, faith, spirituality, government policies in education, health, economy, and national image, among“Justothers.looking at these values, there is a great deal of unanimity about what is the right thing to do. “The question is whether or not you will do those things, or whether you are motivated enough to do them, or whether you are compelled to do them.

”If you do and there is a good likelihood that you could be detected and the process will go through and you will be punished.

“First, there is a need to appreciate the size of the country, which is crucial to understanding what the issues are. “For instance, Borno is about the size of the whole of the UK plus Sweden or Denmark.

“Spirituality helps in that sense to help you to decide what to do and what not to do; especially where institutions are not strong enough to restrain people from behaving in a particular way or not,” he Osinbajosaid.said that the virtues of integrity, transparency and social justice were also exhorted in the different faiths and religions in theAccordingcountry.to him, spirituality connotes values. “I came into government with values about what I think is important especially around transparency, social justice and justice, among others. “”You are almost always a product of the values you believe in. “”Fortunately, a lot of these values cut across the different faiths, they are not necessarily restricted to a religion or one faith.“In societies that are more developed institutionally, you don’t need to be told that you shouldn’t do certain things, because you could end up in jail.

“We built a school that exposed these children to technology and values, and after five years, the children were able to speak English and Hausa, they were doing robotics, writing programmes and other things they were not able to do before then.“What this showed is that with skills, any child, anywhere can do everything, especially when you provide that child with education that is focused,” he said. More so, Osinbajo spoke about the economy, and the Federal Government’s Social Investment Programme, politics, leadership, education, and energy transition, among others.

“ I had a conversation with the governor and other officials and the idea of starting a school for them came up and we stepped in. “The state government gave us land in Maiduguri that could accommodate 1,300 children, and these were children that could only speak Kanuri.

“I speak about corruption and all that; but where the institutions are weak, some people have reasons for not doing the right thing,” the vice-president said. On the perception on Nigeria in the international community, Osinbajo said that it was in understanding the size of Nigeria that the international community could better appreciate the enormity and complexity of some of the country’s challenges.

Near empty chamber worries Senate President Senate spokesman best to respond - SP spox

A recent chamber with the senate in session showing empty seats.

PEOPLES DAILY, MONDAY, AUGUST 29, 2022PAGE 4

A clear case was the last threat by senators across party lines to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari over worsening insecurity in the country. Before now, such moves could not be imagined in Lawan-led Senate, but for even APC senators to openly participate in such threats reveals, perhaps, that the centre cannot hold as it used to do. The signs are clear; APC senators are now disavowed, no one listens to Lawan again. Even Lawan is injured and cannot, like before, fight and defend Buhari, despite his notorious ‘same page’ principle.

Apathy, low morale in Senate as govs hijack 2023 return tickets

Close to sixty senators of the 9th Assembly will most likely not return in 2023, our correspondent, Ikechukwu Okaforadi writes on how this ominous sign is negatively affecting legislative output and functions in the red Thechamber.trendhas continued unabated, where experience and competence in legislation are continually sacrificed on the altar of politics. In what started like coincidence, but gradually became a norm, the aspiration of every Governor is to retire to the Senate. Instances abound of governors who may not wish to go to the Senate, but will frustrate senators from their states, just to leave no one in doubt over where political superiority lies. They do this with great ease, given that party structures at state levels are at their beck and call, hence no time is wasted to shove senators away. This has earned the nation’s bastion of democracy the status of retirement ground for ex governors. There are equally cases where some governors sacrificed brilliant senators just to make space for their wives, kids and cronies, despite such beneficiaries lacking the requisite competence and interest to do the job of lawmaking for the nation. Unfortunately most times, it is the best brains that fall victim in the course of this ignoble power play and this has come at an unforeseen and most times, unnoticed huge cost to the nation’s fledgling democracy. An example of this is when the Senate Leader in the 7th Assembly, a refined lawyer, Ndoma Egba, was booted out of the Senate by his Governor, Liyel Imoke, despite interventions by David Mark and even President Goodluck Jonathan. Also, APC Presidential candidate, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, prevented Senator Olorumbi Mamora from Senate to accommodate his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, just as in Ogun and Kwara, another fine lawmakers, especially in area of health, Senators Ibrahim Oloriegbe and Olarewaju Tejuoso were sacrificed by their governors to settle political interest at the 9th and 8th Senate, just to mention a few. Ahead of the 2023 general election, Governors of Kano, Kebbi, Abia, Enugu, Jigawa, Sokoto, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Cross River, among others are already warming up to replace their respective Senators. Pundits claim in the very near future, no one may become a senator without first being a governor. This will not be in the nation’s interest given that the upper chamber is supposed to be a technical ground where legislations that deepen and consolidate democracy are initiated and produced, and for this reason, it requires special competence to do the However, job. the reverse is the case. Gory images of sleeping senators, mostly former governors, had emerged in the public spaces. Analysts believe this is a clear indication the interest is neither about capacity nor the will to serve Nigeria, but the pecks that accompany such senatorial offices. The ongoing political throat slitting ahead of the 2023 general election has spared no one through different circumstances; high and mighty have fallen victims, including the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan, who contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential ticket, but lost to former Lagos Governor, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Lawan has vast experience in the National Assembly spanning over twenty years, but all that is to be lost from all indications because he, like over fifty six other senators, may not return to the Senate in 2023. Aside Lawan, other senators who may not return to the chamber in 2023 include: Hadejia Hassan Ibrahim (Jigawa North East), Sankara Danladi Abubakar (North West, Ahmed Baba Kaita (Katsina North), Bello Mandiya (Katsina South) and Abdullahi Barkiya Kabir (Katsina Central), Lawali Hassan Anka (Zamfara West). Others are: Mohammed Hassan (Zamfara Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Senator Uba Sani (Kaduna Central), Senator Danjumah La’ah (Kaduna South), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano Central), Nora Ladi Daduut (Plateau South), Dimka Hezekiah (Plateau Central), Gyang Istifanus Dung (Plateau North). Also not returning to 10th Assembly are: Smart Adeyemi (Kogi West), Yakubu Oseni (Kogi Central). In Niger State, while the fate of Senate Bima Enagi (Niger South) is not known yet, the Deputy Whip of the Senate, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger North) lost out. Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe (Kwara Central) and Orker - Jev Emmanuel Yisa (Benue North West), Haliru Jika (Bauchi Central), Lawal Gumau (Bauchi South) and Bulkachuwa Adamu Muhammad (Bauchi North) lost Senatorsout.Emmanuel Bwacha (Taraba South) and Yusuf Abubakar Yusuf (Taraba Central) are not returning, while Senator Amos Bulus Kilawangs (Gombe South) lost out, Ajayi Boroffice (Ondo North), Ayo Akinyelure (Ondo Central) and Nicholas Tofowomo (Ondo South) are not returning. In Lagos State, Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central) is not returning, while in Ogun, Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun Central) is not returning, Senator Teslim Folarin (Oyo Central), senator Francis Alimekana (Edo North), and Matthew Urohgide (Edo South) are not Similarly, returning.Senators Sandy Onor (Cross River Central) and Gershom Bassey (Cross River South) are not returning, just as Ovie Omo - Agege (Delta Central) and James Manager (Delta South) are out, Bassey Albert Akpan (Akwa Ibom), Senator Gorge Thompson Sekibo (Rivers), Betty Apiafi (Rivers), are not returning. Rochas Okorocha (Imo West), Ezenwa Francis (Imo East), among others are not returning either. From this figure, it is clear that the 10th Senate will certainly witness the highest level of turnover of legislators. The consequences are already manifesting in their apathy towards legislative businesses. The chamber is nowadays less than 10 percent occupied by the supposed number of Senators. In manifestation of lack of interest, most of them breeze in, fill attendance and vanish, while a few that stay in the chamber hardly make any contribution as bills are being considered. There were cases where the Senate President presided over the plenary session with less than ten Senators in attendance.Tothis end, Lawan is therefore forced to either swim and sink with the prevailing despondency or do the consideration alone. Many times, when critical Bills are already laid for consideration, he suddenly adjourns plenary to a letter date hoping for better attendance. Some important bills have been considered with less attention they deserve and the consequences will only become evident in the future when implementation begins.Sources in the Senate revealed that many committee works, including oversight functions, public hearing, executive and private member bills which were before now receiving robust legislative attention, are abandoned due to apparent lack of interest by the sponsors or chairmen of the committees.

REPORT

Peoples Daily made efforts to get response from the Senate President’s Media Adviser, Ola Awonoyi, over the sudden dampened moral and lackadaisical attitude and disposition to activities in the red chamber, but he referred the questions to the Senate spokesman, Ajibola Basiru. He said “Glad if you can direct your questions to the Senate spokesman, Senator Ajibola Basiru. He is in the best position to provide answers to your questions. Sorry aboutFurtherthat.” prompting him did not however yield any different results, as he insisted “In my view, the issues are better addressed by him”.However, the spokesman of the Senate, Senator Ajibola Basiru did not respond to messages sent to him at the time of filing this report, just as his number could not be reached. Also, when the Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda was contacted, he did not pick his calls, even text messages sent to him by our correspondent on the issues under consideration were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Over the past six months, contrary to practice at its inception, the Senate now resumes as late as 11:30am and most times adjourns by 1pm. This is despite the fact that since Covid-19 era, it convenes for plenary only two times in a week (Tuesdays and Wednesdays).Theeconomic loss, both in resources and time, which accompanies this laid-back disposition by the senators could only be imagined. Most of the Senators who are not returning in 2023, as expected, may find no more reason to report for work, just as those who report, may not be willing to go the extra mile for a system which they may have perceived as unrewarding and unappreciative. Even the enthusiastic disposition of the Senate President Ahmed Lawan towards coordination of legislative activities when he was initially sworn in, has grossly waned, likewise his bipartisan grip on his colleagues, which today is steadily losing momentum.

“To this end, we, the undersigned, reject their appointment as RECs entirely and urge President Buhari to withdraw their nomination in the public interest and in furtherance of his commitment to leave a legacy of a truly independent electoral institution that enjoys the trust and confidence of citizens and electoral stakeholders. Also, we call for a thorough examination and background checks of the credentials of the nominees. The Senate is urged to reject these nominees that fall short of the threshold of non-partisanship and impeccable character. Electoral commissioners must be individuals with impeccable character, unquestionable neutral inclinations, dispositions, and competence. The nominations and process of confirmation must be inclusive and representative of all segments of the society. “Based on these, we urged the President to withdraw the nomination of these individuals in the public interest and in furtherance of his commitment to leave a legacy of a truly independent electoral institution that enjoys the trust and confidence of citizens and electoral stakeholders.

“In making nominations into INEC, President Buhari should be guided by the judgment of the Federal High Court on affirmative action wherein the court directed that all appointments must comply with the 35% affirmative action for women. “We contend that the appointment of these individuals as RECs will significantly undermine the neutrality and impartiality of the Independent National Electoral Commission, and it will increase mistrust in INEC and Nigeria’s electoral process. By the combined effect of Section 156 (1)(a) and Third Schedule, Part 1, Item F, paragraph 14 (1), these individuals are constitutionally prohibited from any appointment as members of INEC. It will be against the sacred spirit of the Constitution to accept their nomination. Given their antecedent and close affinity with political parties, it is improbable that they will remain neutral and objective if successfully screened as INEC Resident Electoral Commissioners“Additionally,(REC). we are constrained to observe that the appointments did not reflect the principles of non-discrimination and inclusivity that the Civil Society Community has and continues to advocate, particularly, in this instant case, with regard to Persons with Disability (PWDs) who represent about 15% of Nigeria’s population and have been completely left out of the process. We submit that it is critical that as we strive to make the electoral process more inclusive, representative, and qualitative, the appointment of PWDS would provide the pulse required to give effect to the provisions of the Discrimination Against Persons Living with Disabilities Act, 2018, and other legislations and guiding principles in that regard.

By Charles Onunaiju Despite the provocative visit of the retiring US House speaker, Mrs. Nancy Pelosi to the Taiwan region of the people’s Republic of China in July, obviously designed to obfuscate the status of the Africanregion, Representatives to the recent coordinator’s meeting on the implementation of the Follow- Up Actions of the 8th ministerial conference of the Forum on China – Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) unanimously stood shoulder to shoulder with Beijing in mutually offering “unwavering support to each other in upholding territorial integrity, security and development interests”.

African countries have diligently aligned with the universal consensus by integrating its support for One China principle in the mainstream of their respective national foreign policies. And for African countries this is not just a political expediency, but a fundamental policy commitment.

It noted, however, that “there are so many Muslims and Christians who abhor the ongoing violence and want to live in peace with their brethren of other faiths just as they have done for so long.” The statement said such patriots would “only build a stronger Nigeria that is able to tackle these urgent issues that are destroying the country such as lack of security, accountability, corruption, conflict between different peoples and faiths, hunger and the economic situation, if religious leaders determine together to truly lead their people.”

The Taiwan question is actually a leftover of China’s modern history. From 1949 to 1971, the United States and other western powers helped the rump of the General Chiang Kai Shek (KMT) who had fled from the mainland to Taiwan Island to stake a claim of the leadership and representation of China at the United Nations.

Africa and the China’s Taiwan question

Ayokunle said that the religious leaders pledged to demand that free and fair democratic elections should be conducted in peace and for the benefit of all Nigerians regardless of ethnicity, religion or geographical zone.It is good to know that leaders of the two dominant religions in that do genuinely desire a peaceful and secure Nigeria and determined to work together towards that goal. Specifically, they want see peaceful, free and fair elections in 2023. Their avowal, if carried out sincerely, will go a long way to erase the notion that they are responsible for the tension, sometimes very violent, between Christians and Muslims. It is also heartwarming that their starting point is the upcoming elections.

The African representatives unequivocally reaffirmed that “there is but one China in the world, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of china”. Without any ambiguity, what so ever, the African side restated its commitment to the One – China principle and its support for China’s national re-unification and China’s effort to safeguard sovereignty and territorial integrity. The clear position of Africa in support of One China principle completely aligns with the global consensus, famously expressed in the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 passed on the 25th October, 1971, which recognized the government of the people’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of China, with Taiwan as inalienable part of China’s territorial integrity and State sovereignty.Recently in the face of the provocative visit of the U.S House speaker to Taiwan, the United Nations Secretary General, Mr. Antonio Guteeres, described the UN iconic resolution as “the orientation we have in everything we do”. In a recent white paper released by the Government of the People’s Republic of China on the Taiwan question, it states clearly that “Resolution 2758 is a political document encapsulating the One China principle whose legal authority leaves no room for doubt and has been acknowledged worldwide and that “the One-China principle represents the universal consensus of the international community, and “is consistent with the basic norms of international relations”

As a theme in China national question, Taiwan is universally recognized as China’s internal affairs, and except as a strategy to contain and undermine China’s peaceful development, the United States quite clearly recognized in all the foundational documents of the establishment of bilateral relation between the two countries. In making the common cause, with the small separatist clique in Taiwan, fractions of the U.S political establishment have manufactured a political card out of the China’s Taiwan question. However, just as the world found a common cause in condemning the recent Taiwan card played by Washington with the farcical visit of the U.S House Speaker’s visit to the region, Africa’s response has been a very clear and unambiguous affirmation of her unwavering support for the One China principle. Even as a Taiwan question arose entirely out of the modern Chinese history Beijing has demonstrated enormous sensitivities to some certain historical curves and bends, and has proposed the iconic principle of “One Country, Two Systems” whose content states that “after peaceful reunification, Taiwan may continue its current social systems and enjoy a high degree of autonomy in accordance with the law”. While the “two social systems will develop side by side for a long time to come, One county is the pre-condition and foundation of the two systems .This principle not only embodies the Chinese creative spirit to resolve her own internal problems and but provides elaborate political space to accommodate differences not only in political views but in the more complex stretch of social systems within the overreaching dynamic of their common home land.In the white paper, the Chinese government expressed her utmost resolve “to work with the greatest sincerity and exert our utmost efforts to achieve peaceful reunification. But we will not renounce the use of force”.However, in this context, China will not attack, invade or conquer Taiwan as no country in the world would attack, invade or conquer part of itself. Rather Beijing maintained that it would “only be forced to take drastic measures to respond to the provocation of separatist elements or external forces, should they ever cross our red lines”.Andthe red line is any brazen attempt by the small clique of ambitious separatists in Taiwan to declare “Taiwan independence” or external forces colluding with separatist elements to do such. In such extreme circumstances, no one would be in doubt where Africa will stand along with other members of the United Nations. Mr. Onunaiju, research director of an Abuja-based Think Tank.

The recently released white paper acknowledge the historical background stating that “a result of the Civil war in China and the late 1940s and the interference of external forces, the two sides of the Taiwan straits have fallen into a state of political confrontation and it however noted that the sovereignty and territory of China have never been divided and will never be divided and Taiwan’s status as part of China’s territory has never changed and will never be allowed to changed.Inrecognizing that the “Taiwan question arose as a result of weakness and chaos in our nation” the white paper reaffirmed the Chinese government, commitment that the “question will be resolved as national rejuvenation becomes a reality”

General Chiang and his KMT has ruled China as a single party dictatorship supported mainly by the U.S and who in total disregard to the patriotic call of all the Chinese people for an inclusive and coalition government precipitated a civil war in which it lost to Communist Party of China, leading a united democratic front. Despite this historical hiatus further made worse by the interruption of the United States, the two sides of the Taiwan straits (mainland and Island ) found a common ground in the 1992 consensus which restated and the articulated the obvious; the fervent wish of all the Chinese people for complete national re-unification.

According to the statement, that was why it was important for the Sultan and CAN to sign the ‘Declaration for a Peaceful and Secure Nigeria’, and to do so on the world stage of the desire of citizens to live in harmony irrespective of any different. It said the declaration set out a number of principles that the religious bodies believed all Nigerians could readily affirm “as it states that all people are endowed by the Creator with inherent values and fundamental rights, regardless of nationality, ethnicity, culture, region, or the many other differences that often divide them and that the essential freedom and dignity of every person must be respected and protected for the sustenance of peace, unity, and development.

The worthy JNI, CAN accord Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and Jama’atul Nasir Islam (JNI) have signed a peace pact, pledging “to deescalate religious tension” during the 2023 general elections. The “Declaration for a peaceful and secure Nigeria” is meant to ensure a peaceful and secure environment so that Nigerians could freely vote and be voted for. It was signed during the weekend in Washington D.C., United States, on the fringes of an International Religious Freedom Summit 2022. Prof. Yusuf Usman represented the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar III, who is the President-General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and CAN was represented by Rev. Samson Ayokunle, its immediate past president. The leaders of CAN and JNI assured they would “work together to avoid violence, embrace dialogue and remain committed to building resilient communities that are free from fear for Nigerians to be able to cast their votes for candidates of their choice in a conducive environment,” according to a statement by Rev. Ayokunle.Thetwo religious bodies also promised to embrace a vision of common humanity and speak publicly of hope for Nigeria’s peaceful and bright future by embracing each other as members of the same family. They acknowledged that “it is a difficult time in Nigeria, with an everescalating security crisis and an overwhelming loss of trust in the government, saying that “unfortunately, so much of the crisis in Nigeria has had a religious context leading to loss of lives and destruction of property in different parts of the country. This has drawn the country backward in all spheres of life.”

Because of the high stakes involved and the tendency of politicians to use political platforms to fight for political office, the religious leaders, by declaring they would have none of this, have set in motion a tension cooling mechanism. However, in doing so they have their work cut out for them. They have to prove that their followers do, indeed, prefer spirituality to the bread and butter that politicians hold out to them.

Encountering Obasanjo, Tshisekedi and the war in Congo Kinshasa

Some marriages fail due to the memories of parents’ failed marriages or experienced as a child from an estranged parent and still traumatised by their past to the detriment of their own happiness in adulthood. Today, some young adults are choosing options that were once undesirable in pursuit of their own individual happiness while some chose to remain single to break the trail of relationship failures witnessed as children.

Goma is one of the most dangerous cities in the world, being home to the Nyiragongo, one of the deadliest volcanoes. It has hidden in its belly a potentially devastating threat of its mountains which contain Africa’s most lethal volcanoes. In the year 2002 for instance, over 100 people got killed when an eruption of Mount Nyiragongo swirled around Goma. People dropped dead one after the other. The lava from the periphery of Nyiragongo emitted gaseous fumes down to the centre of the city and destroyed more than a fifth of it. Fires and explosions followed and by the time the wrath of Mount Nyiragongo subsided, about 120,000 Goma inhabitants had become homeless. Not minding this danger, Goma is paradoxically home to a beehive of foreigners, a stupendous number of whom you may never encounter in any of the suffering Third World countries. It is a common sight to see white UN soldiers in Goma, with huge epaulettes on their shoulders.Congo is about the richest country in Africa. Those scary mountains of its are reputed to hide inside their bellies huge reserves of cobalt, gold, gems, copper, timber and uranium. Its most valuable resource is its large reserve of diamonds. Indeed, the Congo has the world’s second-largest diamond reserves, at 150Mct, or 20.5% of the global total. Substantial diamond reserves can be found in Kasai Occidental and Kasai Oriental.Atabout 10a.m, Obasanjo was ushered into the expansive and chic waiting room of President Tshisekedi by one of the Congolese president’s envoys, Pacifique Kashasha Birinda. A few minutes after, he was led to the office of Tshisekedi, with press photographers alone allowed to take shots of their immediate convivial exchanges. Thereafter, the press was asked to excuse them. After about two hours of talks, Obasanjo and Pacifique came out to address a battery of Congolese and Nigerian journalists waiting for them. Obasanjo and Tshisekedi met for about two hours. Immediately Obasanjo came out of the meeting to address the press, my question to him was why he was in Congo and what he and Tshisekedi discussed. Chaperoned by Pacifique, who also acted as his interpreter, the old warhorse however filibustered of sort as his response was omnibus. He brushed it off in “Sincediplomatese.thePresident became head of the Republic, this is my third visit. I’ve used every opportunity of my visits to discuss issues of mutual interest to his country and mine… We talked at length about the issue of insurgency and insecurity and border issues. We have insurgency in Nigeria, insecurity and we have areas where we have to cooperate and collaborate, especially in the Northeast of Nigeria where Nigeria borders Chad, Niger Republic and even Cameroon. They have to work together. “Here, we have similar issues of insurgency and they have to see what they can do together with Uganda, Rwanda. In both countries, we have to look at the fundamental causes of insurgency; is it lack of education, acquisition of skills, employment of youths or is it as a result of ideological issues? We looked at this. What we are talking about in Nigeria is what they are talking about here. We have to look at carrot and stick issues. Areas we have to carry them along and areas we have to knock them. I was in Maiduguri two weeks ago. What is happening there is slightly different from what is happening in the Northwest. Where are the insurgents coming from? Where are they based? Who is managing and supporting them? These are the questions we have to answer. The insurgents are not only nationally-based, some come from outside the nation where they operate and we must be alert to that,” he said. Festus Adedayo is a Public Affairs Anlayst.

Your parent’s story can become your own strength and moral obligation to safeguard your own marriage and break the cycle of marital failure in your own generation. Your parents were given their own opportunities and now is your time to take charge of your lives. The truth is that marriage is an experience, and nobody has the complete manual, but everyone has a choice to choose happiness. Even though marriage has the potential to create an everlasting commitment and trust between two individuals irrespective of their background and life experiences, however, it is an individual choice to recognise and embrace the opportunity to seek marital pleasure or live in fear of uncertainty.

Memories of failed relationships can ruin your happiness

A man who witnessed his parent’s toxic marriage is more likely to remain single and uninterested in marriage himself while a woman who watched the father she once trusted walk out on the family as a child may live with the memory of that ordeal and wonder if she will ever trust a man again. The hurts and pains of parental failures can cast a shadow on a couple’s marriage and impact their life-long happiness. Several studies have shown that adults with separated or divorced parents are more likely to walk on eggshells in their own relationships to prevent the repeated pattern of relationship failure in their own quest to change the narrative. However, this can lead to anxiety and depression if an individual’s feeling is constantly suppressed to ease conflict which brings memories of parental marital failures. Childhood trauma is personal to each individual and there are no quick fixes for it in any marriage if it is not validated and addressed with love, empathy, maturity, and sincerity. It is important to recognise that you are not responsible for your childhood trauma and keeping your feelings to yourself will only intensify your pain and cause you more grief in adulthood. Insecurity can cause fatal attraction from like minds and trigger fears of being valued and appreciated by others including your spouse. You may be suffering in silence due to fear of being judged by an impulsive and unempathetic partner; start to take small steps at a time to face your fears and plan to seek professional help so that you can mitigate the prospect of marital failure and repetition of the past. The ultimate joy of marriage is finding true love and someone to share your life with and the opportunity to gain experience and grow together in your individual vulnerability. One of the most effective ways to manage your emotional pains is to learn to trust again and even though you may have been negatively impacted by your family dynamics, you owe yourself the opportunity to replenish the past with an optimistic marital future that you truly deserve.

By Festus Adedayo Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC’s) Presidential Villa is a highly fortified palace. Like in many parts of Central Africa, the Congolese have turned their disadvantaged hilly and mountainous topography into aesthetic wonder. At every point in the expansive Villa, you confront menacinglooking, gun-toting soldiers who radio authorities before allowing you entry. White-painted effigies of four lions by the Villa gate compliment this menacing ambience. The Villa itself is an old but well maintained structure, painted white and probably built in the 1970s. Language barrier limited the satisfaction of my curiosity as to whether Mobutu Sese-Seko ruled from this same Villa. That perhaps is where the aesthetics end. Like Nigeria, DRC is in dire security straits. In features, both countries are twined like Siamese twins, as if from same umbilical cord. While Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa, DRC has the largest land mass on the continent. With its 2,344,860 km square, compared to Nigeria’s 923,770 km square, Congo is more than twice of Nigeria’s land mass. It also has two time zones. Blessed with abundant mineral resources, since gaining independence however – again same time in 1960 – both countries have been challenged by scant supply of leadership. As a result, Nigeria and Congo are a caricature of Providence’s design for them as Eldorado. Since 1960, they have not been able to appropriate their humongous GodgivenAsresources.Nigeria suffocates under the apparently superior firepower of Boko Haram insurgents and bandits, DRC is muzzled by an armed militia group called the M23. While M23 operates in the eastern flank of the DRC, Nigerian terrorists’ domicile is in its Northern part. Between mid-June and July, 2022, M23 summarily executed at least 29 civilians in Congo while in Nigeria, thousands of lives have been tethered by the bloodthirsty grove of terrorists. In the midst of this tension, it was thus a pleasant surprise last Tuesday to see Nigeria’s military General and two-term president, Olusegun Obasanjo, at the DRC Presidential Villa. He was guest of President Felix Tshisekedi. Having been in Kinshasa on a different assignment, ferreting out what Obasanjo was about became my preoccupation. Armed with a background of the unpleasant time the DRC seat of power was going through in the hands of rebels, Obasanjo’s presence raised some rebuttable conclusions that he had come as an amicus curiae of sort of the Congolese government, in its time of tribulation. A top Congolese government source indeed confirmed to me that Obasanjo had been invited to help mediate in the DRC crises with the M23. My reportorial instinct and logic, added to the quip from my source, made me agree that the august visitor had indeed come on that mission. Former UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, had in November, 2008 appointed Obasanjo as peace envoy to the DRC. Obasanjo’s task was to mediate a deal between regional antagonists like M23 and government. Global apprehension had been on the upsurge that, if not urgently trapped, the tens of thousands of civilians who fled into camps as a result of violent activities of the militia might be in jeopardy. In that assignment, Obasanjo worked with the African Union to tease out a peace deal between the Congolese government and eastern Congo Tutsi rebels, as well as the Rwandan government, suspected to be their funder. Also, Obasanjo, as current UN High Representative for the Horn of Africa, has been playing huge mediative role in the ongoing Ethiopian crisis, a role assigned him by the African Union (AU). A few weeks ago, specifically on August 4, the Ethiopian media reported that Obasanjo briefed the Peace and Security Council (PSC) on the Ethiopian crisis and what he had done after PSC’s last meeting. As High Representative, he had earlier briefed the AU during its 1064th session held in February. In June, Obasanjo had flown to Ethiopia to interact withTigray’s Regional State President, Dr. Debretsion Gebremichael and his Ethiopian counterpart, the country’s first female president, Sahle-Work Zewde. M23 is a codename for the March 23 Movement or the Congolese Revolutionary Army. It is a rebel military group of mostly Tutsi ethnic group that operates in the province of North Kivu. It was given birth to on March 23, 2009 through the political party, National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) signing a peace treaty with the Joseph Kabila government. With this, it translated into a political party, with its members getting integrated into the Armed Forces of the DRC called FARDC, M23 thus got its name from the day of the signing of the agreement. It has had commanders like Bishop Jean-Marie Runiga Lugerero, General Makenga Sultani and General Bosco Ntaganda, popularly known as The Terminator. The M23 opposed the Hutu power militia called the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda whose members, the Interahanwe, majorly carried out the 1994 Rwandan genocide. Since its founding, M23 has terrorized DRC. Between 2012 and 2013, its attacks led to the displacement of thousands of people. On November 20, 2012, it annexed Goma, the capital of the Province of North Kivu, with its over a million population. The rebels were however repelled a few weeks after by Congolese army, fighting alongside UN troops and retook control of Goma. In its report of the crisis, the UN stated that Paul Kagame, whose Rwanda borders DRC, was the sole sponsor of the rebellion. M23 resumed its offensive in 2017 and, about two months ago, captured the DRC border town of Bunagana. Though Kagame withdrew his support for M23 after intense international pressure in 2012, he is alleged to have meandered back into sponsoring the rebels. Ugandan army commanders were also alleged by the UN to have reinforced the rebels with troops and weapons, as well as assisting them with recruiting of soldiers. On June 21, 2022, as the rebels fought Congolese forces in Ruvumu, a village in the eastern province, the M23 rebels allegedly summarily executed about 17 civilians, a figure that included two teenagers. It executed even more within a spate of two weeks. The guilt of the victims was that they allegedly acted as informants to the Congolese army about the rebels’ whereabouts. Some other civilians got shot dead as they fled, with others executed at close range. Both the M23 rebels and the Congolese army-backed UN troops fighting in North Kivu have been alleged to have deployed explosive weapons like mortar fire and artillery shelling in their fights, which most times hit civilians and civilian structures. There is no government worth its onions that would not be bothered by the incursion of the M23 into its territory. President Tshisekedi surely is. In November 2020, during a trip to the North Kivu town of Goma, I had seen firsthand indications that Goma would soon get back to the trenches. Closer to be accessed from the Ethiopian ancient capital city of Addis-Ababa, Goma habours virtually all the paradoxes and trajectories of Walter Rodney about underdevelopment and the underdeveloped. It is beautifully scenic, situated in an idyllic location and grafted by nature on the leafy green shores of an equally arrestingly beautiful, salty Lake Kivu. Kivu is 90 km long and 50 km wide, covers a total surface of about 2,700 km² and 58 percent of its waters lie within DRC borders. The lake is also 1,460 m above sea level. Inside the hilly, smouldering and menacing mountains of Goma hide treasures, globally scarce mineral resources which the modern world uses to accentuate its modernity.

Assuming Nigeria, the country we tend to be proud of is divisible; every bonafide person that owes allegiance to the doctrine of Nigeria’s constitution must legitimately have a share just as that of the will from its inheritance because no body from whatever kind of a particular advanced family or section can claim or prove the ownership of a quarter,

It is left to be said that there is no weapon equal to the tenacity of purpose and holding firmly to its principles. ASUU is sending the message that let us draw strength from the hopes of tomorrow and refuse to perish in the darkness of today. But more than that, the ongoing strike is meant to show that freedom can never be given voluntarily by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed. For many years, the ideological nature of political struggle in Nigeria has been systematically suppressed by the press. When Nigeria politics is written about, it is in misleadingly crude terms of power struggles between political parties— usually the All Progressives Congress, Peoples Democratic Party and (very recently) the Labour Party. Or sometimes, the reportage is about individual personalities—Bola Tinubu, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi—or the economic problems (hunger, poverty, disease, joblessness, soaring energy prices and lack of access to quality education, among others) supposedly caused by poor leadership. As a matter of fact, such strands of politics, reported by the Nigerian media, are mere subplots in the battle between a backwards-looking regime, erected on the structures of shameful revisionism, corruption, denial of truth and unpatriotic divisiveness on the one hand, and the nationalists and intellectual workers headed by Academic Staff Union of Universities on the other. It is important to state from the outset that this latter group (led by ASUU) is acting as a check on the increasing gross inequality between the bourgeoisie and the 90% of the Nigerian population who are peasants and urban workers.

‘the only thing necessary in life as in art is to tell the truth’. But here is the real difficulty: truth itself is a very expensive gift which you can hardly find among cheap people. Those who stand for the truth (like ASUU) are not cheap people, they are brave and courageous people who also serve as the conscience of society. Some people cannot hold onto the truth because they are afraid of the iron hand of the ruling class. Yet, others shy away from the truth because they have sold their conscience for pecuniary rewards. Perhaps, a recent example from the media would be insightful. There is a media friend, Farooq Kperogi. I believe strongly that he needs some education about truth-telling. When the current ASUU strike began in February this year, he sensationally threw his weight behind it. But just some weeks ago he made a quick U-turn. His action is not surprising, though it is amazing, because in Nigeria when people criticise (like Kperogi, Keyamo and Adamu) they are only drawing attention to themselves so that they could be given a chance to join the looting. As soon as a Nigerian critic grows rotund from the fat of the land, he abandons the working class and joins forces with the oppressor. Kperogi’s recent essay entitled, ‘ASUU Call off this Strike Now’, is the clearest example of a dozen untruths flowing from the pen of a writer in this modern era. Needless to say that the essay is also the grossest falsehood and the cheapest propaganda. But, most importantly, the essay shows that Kperogi has acquired the dog’s facility for throwing up and returning again to eat vomit.Undeniably, the ASUU strike has the potential to unite both the lecturers, students and parents; the strike has the capacity to persuade Nigerians to be more organised, to resist bad governance and tyranny on a scale they had never beforeAndattempted.fromall indications, the strike has brought out those aspects in Nigerians: resistance, solidarity, courage, defiance and outright rejection of misrule. This is as much as to say that the strike has the capacity to determine who becomes Nigeria’s helmsman in 2023. And since the contours of both life and poverty are the same in Nigerian cities and villages, since only a few can eat while the majority squirm in poverty, since some few privileged children can go to school while the majority cannot, people, peasants and workers are already organised in their villages and cities and will refuse to be cowed by a backwards-looking regime. All Nigerians united by the strike should now be courageously calling for power to the people. It is left to be said that there is no weapon equal to the tenacity of purpose and holding firmly to its principles.

Since no one among us can add a single time frame of a second to any vagabond for continued existence or heal the patient lying on a sick bed from an illness weather at home or hospitals without the will of the Almighty God who is master of the day of resurrection and that of the day of judgement, I think we all supposed to close the chapter of conceiving any hatred or finding a portion in the heart to keep malice be it those from diverse ethnoreligious affiliations or that of a divergent political class as a case close for things to move from the stagnation stage to that of a motion energy.

half or even the entire country blessed with its abundant natural resources ranging from the long term abandoned agricultural farm produce of groundnut pyramid and that of the cotton production all from the northern region or the cocoa production historically recognised in the west and that of the crude oil from the riverine areas of Niger Delta region that is still serving as the country’s major economic source of income over the years. Unfortunately enough, even with the rich oil wells the country was blessed with, there is lesser benefiting factor by the lower class since it undergoes the refining process here but subsequently end up exporting the accomplished refined products to other developed countries like USA and UK among others whose names had already taken a prolonged time frame in the list of world powers, leaving the main producer yet to be among the world economies for centuries perhaps, I wish these could have been a topic of its own, so let me not deviate from where am heading to so as to make my writing more coherent and convincing before losing a single reader of my piece for the sake of another ideas without dabbling in my future piece.

Straight to the point. The Federal Government has over the years treated ASUU so monstrously. From the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida to the democratic administration of Olusegun Obasanjo, to that of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, to Goodluck Jonathan and now Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), it has been the same farcical drama of sham, indifference and disdain. Promises were made but not fulfilled, negotiations began and were stopped only to begin again and stop. For the past three decades, no Nigerian leader has dealt with the ASUU/FG agreement seriously, sincerely, honestly and honourably. From 1992 to date, the rot in the university system has continued unabated; from 1992 to date the university teachers have embarked on several warning strikes and sometimes indefinite strikes all in an attempt to press the government to tread the path of honour by respecting its promises. Now,one can understand why since 1992 the university has been the target of government animosity. On February 14, this year, ASUU embarked on yet another warning strike reminding the Federal Government to honour the terms of the renegotiated 2009 agreement which, among other things, include IPPS vs UTAS, payment of EAA, Revitalisation Fund, release and implementation of Visitation Panel reports. Lamentably, instead of addressing these issues faithfully and honestly, the government opted for its usual mischievous and malicious tactic of hiring its cronies and acolytes like Festus Keyamo, Chris Ngige and Adamu Adamu to blackmail ASUU. In Nigeria, as in other parts of the world, our lives are a battlefield on which is fought a continuous battle between the forces that are pledged to confirm our humanity and those forces determined to dismantle it. It is these two forces that are in conflict every day and everywhere. They are with us in schools, in offices, at the market, in the churches/mosques and even in our homes. In simple terms, there are two classes in society: the rich and the poor, the ruler and the ruled. ASUU, as a union, is made up of a breed of university scholars who are bright, confident, original, honest and whose simple lifestyle is a stunning contrast to the dominant imported culture associated with Nigerian leaders who are the oppressors. In other words, ASUU is the only body in Nigeria that fits the honest, anti-imperialist intellectual, who is armed and prepared to fight, in a certain measure, for the elimination of injustice and the mass participation of the people in the ordering of public affairs. It could easily be perceived that only the intellectual has the capacity to put Nigeria first, to love Nigeria and insist that education is a right and not a privilege. It is only the intellectual that has faith in the capacity of the people to change their lives, to demonstrate that people are subjects and not just passive objects of development, to insist on certain minimum professional ethics and democratic principles, to reject a society based on corruption, to reject the rule of fear, to reveal that the children of ordinary peasants and workers have a right to free education, to insist that it is the primary responsibility of any responsible government to provide education for all its citizens. But over and above all, it is the duty of the intellectual to criticise the policy of privatisation of education and the whole program of looting and plundering of our commonwealth. This strike has demonstrated abundantly that the government has deliberately refused to live up to its primary responsibility of providing education for its citizens. Also, the strike has revealed that ASUU is the messiah and deliverer by insisting that education should be a right and not a privilege. In this regard, ASUU has assumed the unassailable position of the champion of the poor, or better still, the voice of the voiceless. A strike for that matter is not a crime, it is just a resultant product of discontentment or intense provocation. The motive for embarking on a strike is to effect a positive change in an unacceptable condition. In this regard again, ASUU is speaking on behalf of all students, artisans, cobblers, market women, farmers and carpenters—the oppressed members of the Nigerian society. The ongoing ASUU strike has revealed the intolerable gap that exists between the rich and the poor. The strike has shown that there is education and prospects of a good life for the rich but only hunger, poverty and ignorance for the poor.Leo Tolstoy, that famed Russian writer, once wrote that

Things could have change for the better if other citizens may have the same like minds with me in understanding the truth by trying not to hide under the agony of life, though am not bragging to be an exceptional person that is highly focused and well determined in ensuring that Nigeria belongs to all of us not you or I alone. One may really be amazed with most of my published articles on the national dailies if not bothered on why I always tried to hampered on the need for Nigerians to be united devoid of any primordial sentiment or rancour while I remained not fully or even half known to be a religious bigot nor a preacher or scholar but still propagating the gospel of peace at this trying moment when our dear country with a population of over one hundred and forty millions people as per 2006 last census conducted is almost about to break. The logic behind this is to contribute my quota as a patriotic Nigerian towards the nation building by way of cementing the cracks emanating from the olden days muddy or sandy wall just as that of the ancient city walls that were built using traditional method while serving as a defence against enemies during intra communal crisis or even beyond, before the advent of present day construction techniques but still standing the taste of time even when compared to modern construction driven technology as every one owe a responsibility to sanitise on the dare need of our peaceful coexistence as a bridge builder in making not to leave everything in the hands of government alone with the belief that no any meaningful development could be achieve in chaos. Lest, I do not want to be fingered or caught as not been a pious by not backing up the religion I was born and brought in to no matter the circumstances or even be suspected as half a Muslim though I belong not to a mixed religion as mostly found in some northern parts of the country where members of a particular family are leverage to practice any of the two religions like that of a polygyny family type of marriage some times referred to as polygamy which allows a man to marry more than one wife concurrently or simultaneously as mostly found in Asia and a case study of Cameroon from the African continent where a king is allowed to tie a knot with up to 300 wives. I believe that after this issuance, we will see a number of companies in the Nigerian market coming out to issue Sukuk bonds and that will lead to deepening of the non-interest market and eventually economic development of Nigeria.

“Private sector investment in Africa’s infrastructure rose to $19 billion in 2020, representing 23 per cent, the highest since 2016. This counter-cyclical role played by the private sector shows the importance of its growing role in infrastructure financing in Africa,” he said. Also speaking, Keichiro Nakazawa, the senior vice president of JICA, said the discussion would focus on growth prospects for African countries and the role of the private sector in providing high-quality, sustainable infrastructure.

“My message to the investing public is to take advantage of the opportunity in view of its potential for good returns. The instrument is coming out at an expected rate of 15 percent. It is also an ethical instrument and there are very few ethical instruments out there and I believe a lot of investors are looking for instruments that have ethical leaning”, Joda assured.Inhis remarks, the bank’s Executive Director, Mr. Sheriff Idi, also stressed the importance of the Sukuk bond to the TAJ Bank’s operations, capacity to provide financial support to needy enterprises with the attendant positive implications for the nation’s economic growth. The non-interest banking expert clarified: “In the last two years of the bank’s operations we have raised additional capital apart from the Sukuk we are issuing now. With the Sukuk bond issuance, we wanted to raise TAJ Bank’s capital base to about N30 billion by the end of the year and that means we can now finance those sectors that probably some initially thought we cannot provide funding support. That is the essence of this Sukuk bond issuance.”

The online event was held in the run-up to the eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), expected to occur in Tunisia from August 27 to 28. The theme was ‘Private Sector Infrastructure Development Opportunities in Africa’.The vice president said the greater private sector investment came as most African governments contended with the COVID-19 pandemic, limited fiscal space and high debt-togross domestic product ratios.

“Pursuant to Russian regulations, a request to authorise this transaction was addressed to the Russian authorities on August 8, 2022,” the statement reads. “On August 25, 2022, Russian authorities issued their agreement to the proposed sale. Closing is expected in September 2022, subject to customary conditions”.TotalEnergies — formerly Total — owns 49 percent of Terneftegaz, the company that extracts gas from the Termokarstovoye field. The other 51 percent is held by Novatek, in which TotalEnergies also holds a 19.4 percent stake. On Wednesday, last week, Le Monde, a French newspaper, had accused TotalEnergies of

supplying gas condensate that ends up in Russia’s fighter jets used in the ongoing war with Ukraine. However, the company denied the report, saying it was not involved in the supply of fuel to Russian military aircraft in any form. In a follow-up post on Wednesday, TotalEnergies said it sought information from Novatek, its JV partner on “what happens to the gas condensates produced by the Termokarstovoye field in Russia”. It quoted Novatek as saying: “All of the unstable condensate produced by our subsidiaries and joint ventures, including Terneftegas, comes into our Purovsky condensate processing plant. The Purovsky Plant also stabilises condensate from other Russian producers, whose share in the plant’s load does not exceed 20 percent.”

“Thus, there is the urgent need for a conscientious effort to diversify to other non-oil sectors. As I have often said, it is important that we work to create an economy that will enable us feed ourselves, create jobs for our teeming youths and improve the standard of living of our people,” said the CBN governor. “Our population is growing by over three per cent per annum over the past seven years, against a less than steady growth in output sinceHe2019.”added that the economic challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had also made the idea of economic diversification imperative.

“There is no gainsaying that since 2019, the world has been facing severe shocks, propelled by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russian-Ukraine war that have continued to threaten global growth and overall macroeconomic stability,” Mr Emefiele stressed. “As the world was gradually exiting the devastating negative shocks and impact of COVID-19 pandemic, the economic sanctions against Russia have further worsened the subsisting supply-chain disruptions across the globe.” According to him, the accompanying trade dislocations aggravated supply shocks across regions and triggered unprecedented increases in commodities, energy and food prices.

Osita Nwanisobi, director, corporate communications, CBN, said this in a statement issued recently.Nwanisobi said Godwin Emefiele, CBN governor and his team were concerned about the development and what it portends for the sector and travellers as well as the country in the comity of nations. He reiterated that the apex bank was not against any company repatriating its funds from the country, adding that what CBN stood for was an orderly exit for those that might be interested in doing so. “A breakdown of the figure indicates that the sum of $230 million was released as a special FX intervention while another sum of $35 million was released through Retail SMIS auction,” the statement reads.“With Friday’s release, it is expected that operators and travellers as well will heave huge sighs of relief, as some airlines had threatened to withdraw their services in the face of unremitted funds for the outstanding sale of tickets.”Nigeria is facing a forex exchange crisis to meet various obligations, including revenue repatriation by foreign airlines and dollar requests by citizens and businesses. Last week, the International Air Transportation Association (IATA) said foreign airlines’ funds trapped in Nigeria increased from $450 million in May to $464 million in July. Due to the development, Emirates Airlines announced the suspension of flight operations to Nigeria.

Abubakar Yunusa, Abuja A n economic expert, Ken Ife, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari’s regime to improve its commitment to the agricultural and manufacturing sectors of the economy to spur diversification. Mr Ife said this on Saturday in Abuja at the 33rd Finance Correspondents, and Business Editors Seminar organised by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). He made the call in his paper ‘Unlocking opportunities in the non-oil sector’. The expert noted that despite huge intervention in the agricultural sector recently, output appeared to be inadequate.“Public leadership of agricultural development programmes has resulted in the construction of 300 dams, huge strategic grain reserves, and other investments,” the economic expert stressed. “The high number of dams, together with the rains and rivers, give Nigeria four times surface water than South Africa.” Mr Ife added, “But only a handful of the dams are used for power generation, irrigation for dry-season farming and aquaculture.”Hecommended the CBN for its various interventions in agriculture and other non-oil sectors.“Asof February, N948 billion in loans has been given to 4.4 million farmers cultivating 5.2 million hectares, creating 12.5 million direct jobs,” Mr Ife further explained. “The government could not have been able to deliver this order of ‘targeting’ and private-private arrangement and depositors’ monies that need to beSpeakingrepaid.” at the event, the CBN governor Godwin Emefiele said the quest for building a more sophisticated economy was the major component of monetary policy. He said such an economy would be anchored on agriculture, MSMEs, industrial and manufacturing concerns. According to him, Nigeria has largely depended on the oil sector for revenue generation over the past four decades. Mr Emefiele stated that the sustained decline in crude oil production had continued to negatively undermine the performance of the economy.

According to Akporiaye, the implication of the removal from the GDS is that travel agents cannot make bookings from their portals.“They closed inventory on the GDS only,” Akporiaye said. “That means travel agencies can’t issue tickets from our portal but you can book online on their site that is why I said they did not stop sales. “Even if you go to their office they can’t issue a ticket for you. “Now, most of our security guards are still at Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital and Kubwa Hospital receiving treatment for the injuries inflicted on them by these hoodlums, so it is no longer a situation that affects only Kubwa Extension II Relocation, but the whole FCT, that is why we are looking for a lasting solution from the government.

“The Coordinating Committee is poised to do everything within the ambit of the law to recover every dime owed government and will take advantage of this robust partnership with these highly professional legal firms to realize this.

By Stanley Onyekwere Abuja residents in Kubwa Extension II, Relocation community, have sent a strong Save Our Souls (SOS) appeal to the FCT Administration and other relevant authorities to quickly mitigate multifaceted insecurity, dearth of basic amenities and developmental issues that have subjected them to daily nightmarish experiences. In particular, they are crying out to the government to their aid, by swiftly prioritising provision of functional police post or station, motorable access roads, schools, hospitals, electricity supply and potable water supply in the community, having about one thousand households. They decried that the relocation settlement, sited on Arab Road, in Bwari Area Council of the FCT, which was mapped out by FCDA in 2003, and duly signed and commissioned to exist, is yet have government presence. This call was made through Vice Chairman, Kubwa Extension II, Relocation Residents Association, Mr. Francis Bobai, who spoke to newsmen, at the end of the community’s emergency meeting, at the weekend, in the aftermath of a deadly attack on their private security guards, by suspected hoodlums that attempted to rob the community. Bobai, said the insecurity situation is becoming alarming, because five of their security guards were attacked last week’s Tuesday, resulting to the death one, while four are hospitalised. He said: “We deemed fit to cry out to the government to come to our assistance, as we can no longer help ourselves. We pay our taxes, and there is no presence of government within our locality “We have lived here over 25 years, but to our greatest surprise, we have been neglected by the government. This is because we have provided all the necessary infrastructure in terms of access road, electricity supply, water supply (boreholes), in the community, no presence of hospital not even a clinic for emergency cases, no schools, no police.“The roads are bad, and we have tried our best to fix both the drainage and roads, but it is so bad that every week we must visit the mechanic.

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has said that henceforth, all property developers in the FCT, must show evidence of ground rent payment before the Department of Development Control considers and approve any building plan application. This measure, the FCTA said was taken in view of the huge debt of over 29 billion naira owed the Administration by property owners, who have failed to pay their outstanding debt, despite several warnings and appeals.

Earlier, FCT-MPC Chairman, Alh. Hudu Yakubu, who described the AMAC Chairman as a media friendly person, noted that the current administration has so far recognised the media as strategic development partners, which reflects in the appointment of two active Abuja based media practitioners into its cabinet.Hudualso used the occasion to congratulate Maikalangu as the 19th chairman of the Council, as well as commended him for remaining patient and peaceful, even in the face of challenging political and judicial battle. He adds: “Thank you for seeing the media practitioners as partners in his quest towards ensuring a better life for the people of the council”.

It recalled that the FCT Permanent Secretary, Mr. Adesola Olusade recently inaugurated a debt recovery committee with the mandate to recover the outstanding debts owed the FCT Administration with particular interest in ground rents and other sundry fees in the Land Administration as well as other Land related departments. “It would be recalled that the Committee has earlier announced the engagement of five law firms, owned by Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), who have been hired to prepare legal documents to commence legal action against the defaulting titleholders. “The FCT Administration decided to set up this Coordinating Committee due to the failure of titleholders to pay the prescribed land charges, despite several appeals and notices served on the affected property owners.

“We have purchased four transformers for a community with over eight hundred residents (households), it is not enough, so we are also crying out to the government to provide more transformers.“Wehave written so many letters, and follow up, yet there is no solution on ground for us in terms of power supply, schools, as our children are forced to go out of the community to get basic education, and we need the presence of security, either police post or Continuing, station”. he points out that “So, we have the issue of insecurity, which is the most peculiar situation that we are facing, and some members of the community were kidnapped and ransome was paid by the community and families of the victims. Many times, hoodlums invade our community to rob and matchet most of our residents.

“The Committee wishes to appeal to the defaulters to be honourable and responsible to pay their outstanding ground rents as it is a better option left to avoid punitive action”, the statement read.

“I want you to make good use of your offices and position in the society, to please address injustice, because it is injustice that gave birth to crisis and insecurity in our society today, especially when you are trying to forcefully takeover the peoples’ mandate.“Youhave the responsibility to always defend the votes (the peoples’ mandate), by advocating that let justice be done. “You will all agree with me that on the 12th of February, 2022 election, election was conducted, and it was went smoothly, free and fair. “I got over 19, 300 votes while my main opponent had 13, 200 plus votes. We campaigned and made promises people better lives, which we intend to fulfil, but someone is trying take it from them (people).“Bynow, ICPC should be investigating those who brought fake INEC result to the Tribunal, otherwise, our 2023 general election is not safe, because is happening here can equally happen next year”, he stressed. He however, adds that “I must commend our President, Muhammadu Buhari, and our FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, for trading on the path of peace in the FCT. They allowed peaceful elections in the FCT, this ensured that people came out and voted for their candidates. And with the help of God Almighty, I emerged as AMAC chairman. Also,we commend INEC for introducing B-vas machine, which ensures that during elections, the moment voting is concluded at the polling units, the result sheet is immediately sent to INEC server. So INEC is moving forward, but some people are trying to take INEC backward, which should not be allowed to stand, as Nigeria must move forward”.

By Stanley Onyekwere T he Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Hon Christopher Zakka Maikalangu has charged media practitioners to always advocate for justice to be done in every facet of the society, in order to pave way for inclusive and rapid development. He noted that journalists as members of the third estate of the realm, should make good use of their position to address injustice, which, according him, gave birth to crisis and insecurity in the society today. Maikalangu, who gave this charge during an interaction with the leadership and some members of the FCT Minister’s Press Corps (FCT-MPC), at the Council’s Conference room, at the weekend, described AMAC as one of the biggest area councils in the nation, and one of the best in the FCT.

Pakistan’s officials, who have dealt with floods many times before, say the hell unleashed by the heavens was nothing they could have prepared for. “People around the world talk about climate change and something it’s only a theory,” said one official, who has been running a relief operation in Larkana, a badlyhit city.“We are seeing for ourselves on the ground that climate change is happening. We’ve never seen such rains in one year…now we need to think about how we build for the future - how do we even start?” The torrents from swollen rivers in the mountainous north are due to arrive in the coming days. But the devastation is not isolated to Sindh province. One man told the BBC his daughter had been swept away by a flooded river in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Two US warships are passing through the Taiwan Strait, the US Navy has announced. It is the first such operation to take place since tensions between Taiwan and China increased following a visit by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan earlier this month. The US and other Western navies have routinely sailed through the strait in recent years.China reacted to Ms Pelosi’s visit by holding military drills in the area. On Sunday, Taiwan’s defence ministry says it detected 23 Chinese aircraft and eight Chinese ships operating around Taiwan. Among the detected aircraft, seven crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait - an unofficial barrier between Taiwan and China. Washington says its two guided-missile cruisers - the USS Antietam and the USS Chancellorsville - are demonstrating freedom of navigation through international waters. Beijing views such actions as provocative and maintains that the island of Taiwan is an integral part of Chinese territory.

“She told me: ‘Daddy, I’m going to collect leaves for my goat,’” said Muhammad Fareed, who lives in the Kaghan Valley. “She went to the bank of the river and a gush of water followed and took her away.” The US, UK, UAE and others have contributed to a disaster appeal, but more funds are needed, officials say. According to reports by the Dawn newspaper, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a grant of 10bn rupees ($45m) for those in the most affected Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Every flood-affected family would be given 25,000 rupees ($112), Mr Sharif said, which would be disbursed within a week. Mr Sharif said 33 million people had been hit by the floods - about 15% of the country’s population. He said the losses caused by floods this season were comparable to those during the floods of 2010-11, said to be the worst on record.Pakistan’s Foreign Minister, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, echoed Mr Sharif’s calls for more aid. “I haven’t seen destruction of this scale, I find it very difficult to put into words... it is overwhelming,” he told Reuters.

One of Pakistan’s southern provinces, Sindh, is bracing itself for worse to come as the country deals with catastrophic floods. Deluges from swollen rivers are heading for lower-lying areas, officials say, threatening more misery for millions. The floods have killed nearly 1,000 people across Pakistan since June, while thousands have been displaced - and millions more affected.InSindh, the message in every village the BBC visited was: “Send help.” In this province - which has a population of almost 50 million - there has been a little reprieve from the rains. But it will take more than a few days of sunshine to make life right again. This year’s floods have been devastating - and their impact is far from being fully realised. The infrastructure was already basic in many rural communities. Many of the roads are not tarred, and some bridges are worn out after years of little maintenance. But this can’t just be blamed on poor infrastructure.

On Sunday, its military said it was monitoring the two vessels’ progress, maintaining a high alert, and was ready to defeat any provocation, Reuters news agency reports. The US Navy said in a statement that the transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrated the “United States’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific”.

Vladimir Putin recently signed a decree to increase the Russian armed forces’ military personnel to more than 1.15m - a potential increase of 137,000. But the MoD said the boost was unlikely to increase Russia’s combat power - partly because of ongoing losses. President Putin’s decree came amid a military recruitment drive. There have been reports that recruiters have even been visiting prisons, promising inmates freedom and money. Currently, Russia has a limit of just over a million military personnel, plus almost 900,000 civilian staff. In one of its regular updates on the war, the UK ministry said it was not clear if the planned increase would be achieved by recruiting more volunteers - or by increasing conscription. But any increase was unlikely to have an impact in Ukraine given that:

Ukraine war: Russian recruitment drive unlikely to have impact - UK Russia’s plan to expand its armed forces is unlikely to have an impact on the Ukraine war, the UK’s Ministry of Defence has said.

• Russia has lost tens of thousands of troops,•Very few new contract (i.e. nonconscript) servicemen are being recruited

• Conscripts are not technically obliged to serve outside Russian territory, the MoD said. Western officials say some 70-80,000 troops have been killed or wounded since Russia invaded Ukraine six months ago. Russia planned a short, decisive campaign when it invaded Ukraine in February, but Ukrainian resistance has stalled its progress, and in recent weeks front lines have hardly moved. Currently, Russian men aged 18 to 27 are subject to conscription, although many are able to avoid or reduce their service - usually one year - through medical exemptions or by enrolling in higher education.Meanwhile, Ukraine has accused Russian troops of shelling the grounds of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant again over the past 24 hours. But Moscow in turn says Ukrainian forces have been shelling the Theplant.head of the plant’s Ukrainian operator, Petro Kotin of Enerhoatom, has warned that radiation could be released locally if missiles hit the spent fuel stored beside the reactors.

“There is no entity to help push, or to ask for the reasons behind the delays. Dissolving the parliament is a huge obstacle for people to get their rights.” Ms Ksiksi also worries about what she sees as a lack of clarity over whether the new constitution would protect civil rights legislation, particularly Law 50. BBC Arabic News has reached out to a spokesman of the new government appointed by President Kais, but has received no reply so far. However, a prominent Tunisian politician and an ally of the president has denied the fight against racism has been sidetracked by recent events.“The judiciary’s work has never stopped. They are still implementing Law 50,” said Amal Hamrouni of the El-Tayyar El-Chaabi party. As for scrutinising the work of the government, Ms Hamrouni said President Kais had no choice but to suspend parliament.

Angola held a state funeral for expresident José Eduardo dos Santos in the capital Luanda after his death in Spain in July. Several African leaders and Portugal’s president were in attendance. His death sparked a political row after his daughter, Tchizé dos Santos, opposed holding the funeral in Angola. Mr dos Santos, a veteran of the independence war, was a dominant figure in Angolan political history having ruled the country for 38 years. However, his legacy has been soiled by allegations of high levels of corruption and human rights violations while he was in power.Aside from the political class and foreign leaders, Angolan citizens outside the funeral have been paying tribute to Mr Dos Santos, with some wearing t-shirts with his face on them. “He was a great example for the people who did a lot for us,” Adilson Quaresma told the BBC. His funeral comes just days after national elections, with the governing party, the MPLA, expected to return to power. However, the opposition, Unita, has rejected the preliminary results from the National Electoral Commission. Due to the presence of foreign leaders at the funeral, on what would have been Mr Dos Santos’ 80th birthday, authorities have asked local people not to protest amid tensions over the expected election result.

Lassad Karim loved his job and had spent 12 years at the same company, until he said he faced racism at the hands of a new manager. “We were having a discussion when out of the blue she insulted me,” he told the BBC. Mr Karim accuses the manger of using a term commonly used to demean black people as servants: “This is not an acceptable word, it’s hurtful.”“Iwas in shock. Why? What am I guilty of? What did I do? I was broken.” It shook his self-esteem, even to this day. “I loved being out and about. Now I’ve lost the will to go anywhere beyond my front door,” he told the BBC. New legislation, called Law 50, was introduced in 2018, making Tunisia the first country in the Arab region to outlaw discrimination specifically on racial grounds. It was the culmination of years of campaigning by activists who felt empowered by the 2011 democracy protests which saw the overthrow of long-time President Zine ElAbidine Ben Ali. Under Law 50, those found guilty of racist language or acts can receive a prison sentence of up to three years. Authorities can also impose a maximum fine of 3,000 dinars ($950; £775). It has so far succeeded in prosecuting some of those guilty of discrimination, including a case in the city of Sfax where a woman was found guilty of racially abusing her daughter’s Afro-Arab teacher. But this was not the case for Mr Karim. His employer denied racism or firing him and his case was dismissed due to lack of evidence. Mr Karim is one of many black people who say they are still victims of racism, despite this relatively new legal deterrent, as the country’s first black MP explained. “Almost daily, I receive letters from citizens, especially black people. I receive their messages. I receive their complaints,” Jamila Ksiksi said. She said after the suspension of parliament, lawmakers can no longer raise in the channels of power the plight of constituents suffering from racism, nor scrutinise the efforts of the government to tackle it. “The Tunisian people have no voice without a parliament,” she continued. Tunisia’s ongoing social and economic crisis deepened last July after President Kais Saied suspended parliament and dismissed the Presidentgovernment.Saied had said his decision was the only way to reform the country and break Tunisia’s political paralysis. The 64-year-old president last month ordered parliamentary polls after a referendum on a new constitution granted him sweeping newAccordingpowers. to Ms Ksiksi, Tunisia’s parliament used to have a central role in scrutinising the implementation of the landmark anti-racism legislation, but that is no longerShepossible.fearsthat court cases looking into racial discrimination will now take longer to be processed by the courts because of the political turmoil.

According to a survey commissioned by BBC Arabic, 80% of Tunisians believe that racial discrimination is a problem in their country - the highest figure in the Middle East and North Africa region. With black people making up 10-15% of the Tunisian population, there are fears the fight against racial discrimination is now at a standstill after the suspension of parliament, the country’s first black female MP has told the BBC.

Zenu dos Santos, a son of the former president who attended the funeral to the surprise of many, has been jailed for five years for fraud. José Eduardo dos Santos died aged 79 after a cardiac arrest while undergoing medical treatment at a clinic in Barcelona, Spain. He stepped down in 2017, bequeathing power to Mr Lourenço who was then defence minister.

Libya has been in chaos since the Nato-backed uprising in 2011 that ousted long-serving ruler Colonel Muammar Gaddafi.Despite this, the country had enjoyed a relatively calm period over the past two years. On Saturday, armed forces of the internationally recognised government tried to push back a convoy of militia loyal to Fathi Bashagha - the man who is recognised as prime minister by a rival, eastern parliament and is vying for control of the country. There were reports of small-arms fire and explosions in several areas of the capital. Black smoke could be seen rising across the Emergencycity. services said a number of hospitals had been hit. People were also evacuated from areas around the fighting.OnSunday, there was quiet in the capital. The UN’s Libya mission said the fighting had included “indiscriminate medium and heavy shelling in civilianpopulated neighbourhoods” and called for an immediate ceasefire - which was backed by the US ambassador to Libya, Richard Norland on Saturday. The oil-rich country once had one of the highest standards of living in Africa, with free healthcare and free education. But the stability that led to its prosperity has been shattered and Tripoli has seen frequent fighting between rival forces since 2011.

BBC News Arabic also gathered evidence suggesting that hijab-wearing women were being restricted from buying holiday apartments by a major developer, La Vista. The company has projects in Cairo as well as several high-end coastal developments. In the past it has sold properties to women with hijabs, but our investigation found many social media posts accusing La Vista of changing its policy and now placing restrictions on them.

In the past fortnight, Australia has been gripped by revelations that former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison secretly appointed himself to several additional ministries. The move has been labelled a “power grab” by his successor as prime minister, and Mr Morrison has been scolded by many - even his own colleagues.Butthe scandal has also dragged Australia’s governor-general into the fray - sparking one of the biggest controversies involving the Queen’s representative in Australia in 50 years.

The historian says it’s one of the biggest controversies surrounding a governor-general since John Kerr caused a constitutional crisis by sacking Prime Minister Gough Whitlam in 1975. Prof Hocking famously fought for transparency around that matterwaging a lengthy and costly legal battle that culminated in the release of Mr Kerr’s correspondence with the Queen. And she says the same transparency is needed here. The Australian public need to know whether Mr Hurley counselled the prime minister against the moves, and why he didn’t disclose them himself.

So does Governor-General David Hurley have questions to answer, or is he just collateral damage? ‘Just paperwork’ Governors-general have fulfilled the practical duties as Australia’s head of state since the country’s 1901 federation. Candidates for the role were initially chosen by the monarch but are now recommended by the Australian government.Thejob is largely ceremonial - a governor-general in almost every circumstance must act on the advice of the government of the day. But conventions allow them the right to “encourage” and “warn” politicians.

Key duties include signing bills into law, issuing writs for elections, and swearing in ministers. Mr Hurley has run into trouble on the latter. At Mr Morrison’s request, he swore the prime minister in as joint minister for health in March 2020, in case the existing minister became incapacitated by Covid.

Former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull - Mr Morrison’s predecessorhas also voiced support for an inquiry. “Something has gone seriously wrong at Government House,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.“Itisthe passive compliance along the chain… that did undermine our constitution and our democracy… that troubles me the most. This is how tyranny gets under way.”

Women wearing hijabs (Muslim headscarves) are being discriminated against by businesses in Egypt, a BBC Arabic investigation has discovered.Theevidence appears to violate Egypt’s constitution, which bans discrimination based on religion, sex, race or social class. Since 2015, some Egyptian women wearing a hijab have taken to social media to complain about such treatment.

On hijabi lifestyle social media groups, BBC News Arabic found what appears to be a growing trend, with women accusing numerous venues of refusing them entry if they are wearing a hijab.“In most cases the main cause is classism,” Nada Nashat, a lawyer and women’s rights activist, said. “So we find discrimination against hijabi women in venues that like to present themselves as uppermiddle or upper class. “But we also find discrimination against non-hijabi women in lower and middle classes.”BBC News Arabic tried to make a reservation at 15 upmarket venues across Cairo that had been accused online of discriminating against hijab-wearing women. Most of the venues asked for the social media profiles of all guests and 11 venues stated that head coverings were not allowed. We sent an undercover married couple, with the woman wearing a hijab, to some of the venues that told us that hijabwearing women were not allowed entry. At L’Aubergine in the upmarket neighbourhood of Zamalek, the doorman immediately told the couple that the headscarf was forbidden as they had a bar inside, and that this might offend women wearing a hijab. The manager too was adamant, saying: “The headscarf is forbidden.”Whenpresented with our recorded evidence, L’Aubergine told us it was “inaccurate” and that refusing women who wear the hijab is not a house rule, adding: “We denounce it.” The venue also told us: “We have reiterated our house policies to staff to avoid any confusion in the future.” At Kazan, in the same neighbourhood, the couple was once again told by the doormen: “The problem is the headscarf.” When asked why, they simply stated: “This is the house rules.”

At the final venue, Andiamo in Heliopolis, the couple was initially refused entry. After appealing, they were told they could enter but would have to sit in a corner as the manager said: “It’s a ministry of tourism instruction, and if they find any hijabi woman beside the bar, they’ll fine us.”

Discrimination based on religion or social class is barred by the constitution in Egypt Mayar Omar says she has repeatedly been refused entry to venues

Over the next 14 months, he also signed off Mr Morrison as an additional minister in the finance, treasury, home affairs and resources portfolios. Mr Morrison already had ministerial powers, so Mr Hurley was basically just giving him authority over extraIt’sdepartments.arequestthe governor-general “would not have any kind of power to override or reject”, constitutional law professor Anne Twomey tells the BBC. “This wasn’t even a meeting between the prime minister and the governorgeneral, it was just paperwork.”

But Mr Morrison’s appointments were not publicly announced, disclosed to the parliament, or even communicated to most of the ministers he was job-sharing with. Australia’s solicitor-general found Mr Morrison’s actions were not illegal but had “fundamentally undermined” responsible government. But the governor-general had done

An executive at a multinational company told BBC News Arabic how he had contacted several property brokers to buy a property at La Vista, but that they told him: “Sorry, La Vista are a bit difficult regarding the hijab.” BBC News Arabic contacted six property brokers, posing as a buyer whose wife wears a hijab and who wanted to buy a unit at a La Vista coastal project. They told us it would not be possible to purchase a unit. One told our undercover reporter: “Can I speak to you frankly? Definitely look for an alternative.”Another went even further, stating: “To be frank with you, regarding the North Coast and Sokhna projects, they are discriminatory.”Onebrokerexplained how the process worked. “They will not say that we won’t sell you a unit, but they will say that this project you have selected is closed now and when it’s open, we will call you, and they Whenwon’t.”ourundercover reporter phoned La Vista stating that his wife wore a hijab, he was told he would be put on a waiting list and there were no properties available.Several weeks later he visited the La Vista office but this time didn’t say that his wife wore a hijab. He was told there were property units available immediately and when he asked what kind of people lived there, the agent told him: “The idea is that all the people we have look like each other.” She stated that one La Vista development “has no veiled women at all”. La Vista has not yet responded to requests for comment.

The Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) says it will commence the construction of its North-Central zonal office in Nasarawa State, in January 2023. Executive Secretary of TETFund, Arc. Sonny Echono, made this known during a courtesy visit to the Fund by Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State on Thursday in Abuja. Echono, who expressed delight over the tremendous impact of TETFund intervention projects in tertiary education institutions in Nasarawa State, said the zonal office would bring beneficiary institutions in the North-Central region closer to the Fund. He expressed appreciation to the governor for allocating land for the construction of the north central zonal office. “Your Excellency graciously approved and allocated land to us as the North Central zonal office. We plan to commence construction in January 2023. It will afford us the opportunity to get closer to beneficiaries of our intervention projects,” Echono said. While expressing readiness of TETFund to reposition public tertiary education institutions for better performance, Echono lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for his massive support for the Fund, which has seen an upward review of education tax to two and half percent.

Usman-Sokoto described the donation as a commitment of UNICEF to ensure that children received both qualitative and quantitative education in their respective primary schools as well as Integrated Quranic Schools. He noted with satisfaction that visits to such schools showed that pupils could now read, write and even solve simple arithmetic , unlike wahat was obtained before.

President Muhammadu Buhari

Italian Serie A club Atalanta have signed Nigeria winger Ademola Lookman from German Bundesliga side RB Leipzig for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old former England youth international, who scored eight goals in 42 appearances on loan at Leicester City last season, has agreed a four-year contract. After struggling to settle down in Germany, Lookman, who spent the 2020-21 campaign on loan at Fulham, says he is “happy to find a new home” in the northern Italian city of Bergamo. An Under-20 World Cup winner with England in 2017, he switched international allegiance to Nigeria, the country of his parents, in February. The former Charlton Athletic and Everton player scored five times in 24 appearance for RB Leipzig after moving to Germany for a fee of £22.5m in 2019. Rise to the top Lookman joined Charlton’s academy in 2014 and made a rapid rise through the ranks before his first-team debut in November 2015. Over two seasons, he went on to feature 49 times in all competitions for the Addicks, scoring 12 goals, before signing for Everton on a four-and-ahalf-year-deal in January 2017. He scored four goals in 48 appearances for the Toffees, before enjoying a brief loan spell with RB Leipzig in the 2017-18 season which led to a permanent five-year deal in July 2019.

Indeed President Muhammadu Buhari had times without number underscored the importance of unity and peace of the country no matter our differences and challenges. Peace and unity of the country at all costs must not be compromised especially in view of the fact that they are the bedrock and building blocks of progress, growth and development.Thereisno gainsaying the fact that our politicians must resist the temptation of their self centredness to reincarnate another civil war in the country. Should that happen today, Nigeria will face its worst times in itsNigerianshistory. must therefore as a matter of fact try and avoid actions that are capable of generating tensions which may further degenerate into a full blown war. Buhari’s caution against civil unrest

Lookman has four caps for three-time African champions Nigeria and scored his first international goal in the record 10-0 win over Sao Tome e Principe in an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in June.

F or the purpose of refreshing our memory, it’s important we begin this discussion by taking a look at what Nigeria’s Civil War was all about.TheNigerian Civil War, which began on 6th July 1967 and ended on 15th January 1970, is also referred to the NigerianBiafran War. It was a civil war fought between the government of Nigeria and the Republic of Biafra, a secessionist state which had declared its independence from Nigeria in 1967. Nigerian side was led by General Yakubu Gowon, while Biafra was led by late Lt. Colonel Odumegwu Ojukwu.TheUnited Kingdom and the Soviet Union were the main supporters of the Nigerian government, while France, Israel and some other countries supported Biafra.

The United States’ official position was one of neutrality, considering Nigeria as ‘a responsibility of Britain’, but some interpret the refusal by USA to recognize Biafra, as one favouring the Nigerian government.Speaking against the background of personal involvement in the war as a senior military officer and one of the frontline commanders on the Nigerian side, President Buhari had in the strongest terms ever, warned politicians “never to allow the self-centeredness that led to the loss of about a million lives during the 1966- 1970 Civil War, repeat itself in the country.”President Buhari gave this warning while granting audience to former state Chairmen of his defunct Congress for Progressive Change, CPC which went into coalition to form the now ruling All Progressives Congress, APC in 2014.Noting that the defunct party was founded on the bedrock of patriotism and loyalty to the unity of Nigeria, the President used the opportunity to urge political leaders to remain focused and uphold the ultimate objective of promoting interest of the country at all times. Noting that the passion and zeal for improving the livelihood of Nigerians which culminated in creation of the CPC, had not dwindled, Buhari called for more steadfastness, adding: “We are Nigerians; God willing, “ It is therefore not in doubt that as one of the commanders of the civil war on the Nigerian side, PMB is a living example of a first hand executer of the cost and consequences of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war.

GuestMusaColumnistByIlallahLATEST Atalanta sign Nigeria forward from RB Leipzig we remain Nigerians, and Nigeria shall remain one... “Our main objective is the Federal Republic of Nigeria. We are human beings. We have our weaknesses, but I can assure you that the patriotism in us is hard-earned.”“Wehave gone through all the troubles from 15th of January 1966 to date. You know what I mean by this; we have killed a million of ourselves in order to keep this country together. I don’t think there can be any practical experience more than that. We are Nigerians, God willing, we remain Nigerians and Nigeria will remain one,” President Buhari added. It is therefore not in doubt that as one of the commanders of the civil war on the Nigerian side, PMB is a living example of a first hand executer of the cost and consequences of the Nigeria-Biafra civil war. Urging members of the defunct party and other party leaders in the country to always be mindful of the larger picture by working towards preserving the unity, peace and integrity of the nation, PMB stressed that the doggedness “with which we pursued our vision and goals that culminated into the success we recorded remain like bright stars in the history of our dear nation.”

In furtherance of his desire to consolidate attempts to further unify the country, PMB stated: “We shall remain resolute to continue to deliver on the promises we made to Nigerians, and to ensure that we attain greater milestones in terms of economic growth, infrastructural development, provision of security, and the war against corruption, among other responsibilities of government.”
