Following a frantic and entertaining game in our season opener against the Newcastle Eagles we now turn our attentions to the Manchester Giants at the Pavilions.

Unfortunately, we didn’t get the result we wanted but there were some real positive signs and shows that with a complete roster we will be able to compete.

Both Rowell-Graham Bell and Kofi Josephs showed what they will bring to the team this season against a fully fit Newcastle side both defensively and offensively which will bode us well for the season ahead.

Unfortunately, we still await a period where we can have a fully fit roster as injuries still continue to hamper the team and it’s frustrating that when one player gets fit another gets injured and we can’t wait to finally get our full-strength squad available.

However, we still continue to grow off the court and the response to our pre match clinics and schools programme has been phenomenal. We really appreciate the support from everyone who has contacted us to engage, and we look forward to welcoming them to our games.

We have also had a busy month commercially welcoming three new sponsors to the club and a longstanding sponsor in Ivor Dewdney returning to the club this season to drive and support our youth programme. In discussions with the sponsor’s, I have been really humbled by the support in our shared vision to promote and support all aspects of basketball in the city and surrounding area.

We have also seen a major rise in our junior basketball numbers at the start of term two adding a second U12s session at Plympton Pacers as a result of demand and adding a number of sessions at Tavistock College. We look forward to announcing a number of other sessions over the coming weeks and watch this space for further news.

We therefore look forward to continuing our sustainable approach to growing the Plymouth City Patriots brand and making basketball accessible to everyone in the area. The club is committed to ensuring that basketball affects as many people as possible in a positive way and we are proud to be able to be delivering this promise throughout the season.

Good evening, today we welcome to the Pavilions Manchester Giants for this BBL Championship game.

Giants coach Lloyd Gardner cleaned house in the summer and has put together a very solid team, who have had a pretty good start to their season.

As per previous games this will be a tough encounter for the Patriots. Manchester have a very deep team, probably one of the deepest teams in the league and they can always keep fresh legs on the court.

Our first game of the league championship season against a fully fit Newcastle Eagles didn’t start the way we wanted, and we quickly found ourselves chasing the game. This was the first game for Kofi and Rowell of which their introduction off the bench gave us some impetus and hope, but it’s hard to chase a game like that and against a team of Newcastle’s calibre. We need to protect the basket better than we have done and force teams to take tougher shots, and ultimately look after the ball with more consistency, then we give ourselves an opportunity.

We are in a situation now where we must shake things up a little to find a way to start games better than we have been doing. If we can get off to better starts, we might just give ourselves a chance of being in a game come the fourth quarter and who knows what might happen then!

With two new signings announced mid week and a near sell out crowd for this Sundays game, there was certainly plenty of excitement in the build up to the clash with reigning Cup and Playoff Champions, the Newcastle Eagles. The Eagles themselves have not had the best starts this season, losing seven of their first eight games, amidst injury problems, COVID issues and personnel changes. However, they are, let’s not forget, the Newcastle Eagles. A team that boasts the most trophies in BBL history, and who currently has the greatest player of this generation in their midst, Rahmon Fletcher, two time league MVP. These simple facts and figures seemed to be something that perhaps played on the minds of the Patriots players, as they took to the court, despite having a full squad for the first time this season and two high profile signings.

It took nearly four minutes for the Patriots to get any points on the board. Starting with the two new boys, Kofi Josephs and Rowell Graham-Bell on the bench, it was almost another two minutes before the Pats scored again with Rowell Graham-Bell making an immediate impact off the bench with a trademark dunk. The Pats would struggle in the first quarter, losing 23-7, and they would never recover. The Newcastle Eagles, led by Rahmon Fletcher and their new signing, and former London Lion Brandon Peel, were simply too strong. The Eagles dominated with a somewhat soul destroying 99-74 victory.

The positives from the game, although few and far between, did include better ball handling, as the Pats actually turned the ball over less than the Eagles, 11-13. The Patriots also did manage to hold their own throughout the second half, although the damage was done and perhaps the Eagles at this stage, were just happy to trade baskets and protect the large lead they had sumounted.

Also the two new additions, Josephs and Graham-Bell, made excellent contributions in their first professional game for over a year. Rowell Graham-Bell was most definitely my Patriots Player of the Game, with Josephs a close second after the pair of them had impressive numbers. Graham-Bell just clinched it however, with 12 points, 12 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block in just 22 minutes playing time.

It would unfortunately be the poor shooting percentages that would let the hard working Pats down.” We had a slow start again,” said coach Paul James in his post game interview,” we dug ourselves a big hole, and that is something we are going to have to look at and address as quickly as possible.” Coach PJ also had another reason for his sides difficult start to the game,” I’m trying to figure out what is our best lineup right now, with Kofi and Rowell coming in, I’ve got to figure out who can play with who, what our best defensive lineup is and what our best offensive lineup is, but for sure both of these guys will help improve the team.” With this full squad only being together for one week, it is a difficult task for Coach PJ to organise his team into an efficient system and with a ten day wait until the next matchup against the high flying Manchester Giants, PJ is not planning to go easy on the squad,” we’ve got no time to relax...

we haven’t won a game yet, so we are gonna be out there training hard and pushing, trying to get the two new boys integrated a little better and see what we can do against Manchester.” The coaches opinions on having a full roster, plus two new additions and still trying to get the best from his squad was echoed by Graham-Bell, post game when asked what the guys need to work on ahead of the Manchester game,” Team chemistry! Understanding what players like to do on the court, not just what everyone is expected to do. We lacked the chemistry today and the Eagles made us pay for it.” Graham-Bell also added what he would personally be bringing to the Patriots team,” All round energy man! Either on or off the court I’m always going to help players do the right thing, as I expect others to tell me… I’m going to try to be all around the court, switching, helping, attacking the basket when there’s a good opportunity to score and just help my team win.

That’s what I’m all about, winning.”

Positive words from the Patriots new signing and certainly an exciting prospect moving forwards.

The tough fixtures keep on coming however, with the Manchester Giants heading to Pavillions Wednesday 17th November, 7pm tip off, and a game that although a tough prospect, could pay witness to a long overdue Patriots win.
