NEW FACES TO WELCOME THE LEAGUE SEASON Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop

Today we welcome the start of the league season which we are extremely excited along with introducing some new faces to bolster the firepower of the team.

Our plan was always in time to add some more experience and we are really pleased to welcome Kofi Josephs & Graham Rowell-Bell who will add an increased offensive threat which we have missed through the cup campaign. With these new guys in the roster and everyone staying fit we are really looking forward to some exciting performances this season.

As the team grows on the court we continue to grow and improve the reach of the club off the court and pleased to announce our newly formed partnership with Tavistock College which will provide the town with a major junior basketball provision. In addition to the basketball coaching and development we will link together on educational and media opportunities and will be the first of many partnerships to be announced over the coming months.

We also completed our first half term camps, and the response and feedback has been phenomenal which has led us to announce a xmas camp in late December. To see so many children engaging and enjoying the camp was really satisfying for the club and great to see our vision coming to fruition. Due to the response to the xmas camp we have had to open new slots and would urge anyone looking to book to take advantage as soon as possible before it is too late.

We have also seen a rise in our pre-game clinics, schools coaching and engagement with the club

during the last few weeks which will bode us well for the season. As stated, the club requires everyone’s support through this transitional season where we lay the foundations for future success and sustainability.

Although today we look forward to the future, we also take the opportunity to remember and pay respect to the past. Today we will be respecting and honouring the life of Rick Wooldridge who sadly recently passed away.

Rick was a tremendous coach, mentor, teacher and had touched every aspect of the basketball community for which we are truly grateful. We will also be due to not having a home game on remembrance Sunday, paying our respects today to those who gave their lives for our freedom.

In addition to welcoming the Newcastle Eagles to today’s game we also welcome the Wooldridge family to enjoy an afternoon of tremendous live competitive basketball.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Pavilions for this our first BBL Championship league game of the 2021-22 season. Today we host the Newcastle Eagles who are coached by Ian Macleod.

Ian has this season as expected put together a strong looking Newcastle Eagles team having retained a few familiar faces in Darius Defoe, Lous Sayers, and their main man Rahmon Fletcher along with some talented new faces.

Ahead of this game we have had the good fortune of being able to find and add a couple of players of real quality who I feel are going to fit our ethos and will improve the team roster. Kofi Josephs and Rowell Graham-Bell have brought a new dimension to the team in different ways, and they are really going to help us push forward during the league campaign.

Rowell and Kofi’s experience and talent is going to be immense for the team, but as always it takes a little time for new players to fit into the system properly so it probably will take a couple of games for them to hit their straps fully.

However, we are excited to have them both on the team and looking forward to them helping us be the best version of ourselves, improve our performances and with that the wins will come.

I extend a warm welcome to the Newcastle Eagles coaching staff and players for this BBL championship match.

Another tough night for the Plymouth City Patriots, as they are still in search of that elusive first win. The Surrey Scorchers were the visitors, and ultimately spoiled the party atmosphere from the almost sold out Pavilions. There was a certain air of expectation inside the arena, and why not, after all the Pats gave a good account of themselves at the weekend against the best in the BBL, the Leicester Riders. Not to mention, the last time these two teams met was a low scoring and tight affair. From the opening tip off, both teams seemed to be scoring freely. A definite positive considering in previous games, the Pats have been very effective defensively, but unable to take advantage of this and score at the other end. Unfortunately for the Patriots, the Scorchers would be the team that would maintain the scoring pace, and the Pats would once again find it difficult to put the ball in the basket.

The Scorchers, led for the most part by Great Britain point guard Andrew Lawrence, a former NBA Summer League player for the Washington Wizards and a player whose overseas career has been outstanding. Lawrence ran the show, hitting his first five shots and giving his team a firm grip on the game, before pulling away from the Patriots around the midway point, extending the lead to as many as 22 points. Infact, it is fair to say that with Lawrence fully fit, and the Scorchers American contingent available to play, it was a very different team to the one the Pats met only a few weeks ago. The Scorchers were physical and dominant in all areas of the court, and on the night as their name might suggest, were on fire, shooting exceptionally well. The Pats, as always,

fought hard and regularly cut the lead in half, but were simply out matched for size and depth.

Kingsley Okoroh, who received a nasty eye injury in the Pats last outing was unable to play, his eye still partially closed and looking more like he’d gone the distance with Tyson Fury than being on the receiving end of a flailing arm on a basketball court. His absence paved the way for the visitors’ own 7 foot plus centre, Legend Robertin. Robertin was unstoppable defensively, and his sheer size and presence was more than enough to deter any consistent Pats players from going to the basket.

Robertin finished the game with 5 blocks, but his presence around the hoop had a detrimental effect on the home team. The game finished up a convincing win for the Scorchers, 81-67.

A shining beacon of light in the Patriots fruitless evening was the young prospect, Isaiah Walker.

The 22 year old forward showed signs of what he is capable of, with 14 points in just over 23 minutes, including three 3 pointers and a breakaway two handed dunk, he was undoubtedly my Patriots Player of the Game. Walker’s 14 is a career high, at this early juncture and the young man proved to have a mature head on defence as well, causing the opposition turnovers and adding a block to his stat line.

loss, shared his thoughts post game, “I thought in the first half we lacked conviction defensively and we gave up 51 points in the first half. You’re not gonna win too many games like that.”

This was the last game in the BBL Cup and with the BBL League Championship now approaching, PJ highlighted,” Once again we were always chasing the game.

We had some good moments in the second half ,we just didn’t have them for long enough periods…

We fought hard as we always do, but actually now we’ve got to do ourselves a favour by not getting behind so deep…” On a more positive note, Coach PJ was impressed by the contribution from Isaiah Walker,” Isaiah has been playing pretty well, he has been getting open shots and he knocked some down today which was great to see. He was the one bright spark from the game.”

The Patriots head into the forthcoming League fixtures without a win, which will disappoint the team and fans alike. It has been a difficult Cup campaign, rife with injuries and issues off the court.

On the court however, the players have conducted themselves with the uttermost professionalism and portrayed a hard working, never say die attitude that could see them have a moderate amount of success during the long and sometimes arduous regular season. There have been some outstanding performances from individuals as well during these early group stages, but my pick for Patriots Player of the Cup Competition has got to be the emergence of Denzel Ubiaro, as the captain, leader and main talisman of the squad.

The Patriots faceoff against the reigning Cup and Playoff Champions, the Newcastle Eagles on the 7th November, and they expect a near sold out crowd to witness the opening league game. The Patriots may also have a surprise or two up their sleeve!
