Today marks a tremendous achievement which has been widely documented as the biggest turnaround in BBL history to make the playoffs.

I’m immensely proud of the players, the team behind the team, fans, volunteers and sponsors who have made this season a real success. The support, commitment and desire to make this franchise work has been really appreciated and I’m grateful for the way everyone has taken the Patriots to their hearts.

I think what has been achieved this year shows what hard work, determination and a great place Plymouth can be for Basketball. We have grown a number of initiatives and albeit not perfect in many ways we have the right vision and desire to create a long-standing sustainable model which is difficult but achievable. Keeping professional basketball in Plymouth was our first priority and now we work on building upon our great foundations.

Today will be a major task against a side which have been bulletproof this season and probably have 9-10 first team players in their roster.

You have to admire their sheer willingness to win when at times they don’t need to and the professional way they go about their business.

One day I hope this club can compete with the

likes of Leicester both on and off the court and we work towards that goal every day.

I’m not accepting these will be my last programme notes of this season because I know this team has the talent required on its day to finally beat this Leicester side. Home and away I’m sure we will give everything we have, and this game will have enough spice to make it a very entertaining and competitive game for everyone to watch.

The pavilions will be packed again and following the electric atmosphere of last Sunday’s game against Newcastle I’m sure we will be raising the roof once again. To also see so many fans booking their tickets to this weekend’s game against Leicester really makes me smile and again would thank everyone for this continued support.

Some people said that we wouldn’t win a game and some people said we definitely wouldn’t make the playoffs. For all those people saying we can’t overcome Leicester, watch this space……

In closing, it’s been emotional, eventful and my pleasure to serve as your chairman this season and glad we were able to put so many smiles on so many faces.

Good evening and welcome to the Plymouth Pavilions for this evenings BBL quarter-final playoff first leg against Leicester Riders.

Leicester have had an incredible campaign having only lost two games in the championship all season long. They set the standard for all to follow.

But this is the playoffs, and anything can happen!

We have had the most unbelievable season in our own way. From the way we started, there was no way that we should have made the playoffs in many people’s eyes.

We always had other ideas and see the foundation early in the season for us to be move forward once we could bring in a couple of import players in Antonio, Rashad and Troy joining later. We then became more than a competitive team.

It has been so impressive the way you our fantastic supporters have got behind the team from the very start and I’m so happy that we have been able to reward your efforts by way of fighting our

way into the final playoff position. This has been an epic effort by all concerned.

Yes, we now have to play the best team in the league over two legs to get to the semi-final, but we will be up for the challenge and give it our all.

I would like to thank our amazing volunteers for the gifts Jenny and I received at the presentation evening last week, thank you very much.

We now need to play our best two games of the season if we are to progress to the semi-final. It’s certainly easier said than it will be doing it, but never say never.

We will battle for every minute and every point!

I would like to give a warm welcome to Coach Rob Paternostro, his players, and staff for this BBL playoff game.

MATCH REPORT The Plymouth City Patriots, with their destiny in their own hands, took on the Newcastle Eagles in a winner takes all matchup that excited a sold-out Pavilions from start to finish.

It was a tense Sunday afternoon following the Friday night loss to this season’s league champions Leicester Riders. It set up a playoff decider between the home team Patriots and visiting Newcastle Eagles, where a victory would see either team secure the eighth seed and a place in this season’s playoffs. Although tense, the atmosphere was electric and felt more like a cup final than a league game. With so much at stake, both teams would want to get a good start from the opening tip off.

Thankfully for the home fans it was Plymouth that forced the tempo and early baskets from Rashad Hassan and a breakaway dunk from Rowell Graham-Bell brought the crowd to its feet. The Eagles would not be a push over however, always managing to keep the Patriots within reach, despite going down by as many as 10 points with heroic performances from Darius Defoe and former two time league MVP Rahmon Fletcher.

The Patriots maintained their advantage throughout the contest with exceptional defensive shifts from Elvisi Dusha and Denzel Ubiaro, both making life difficult for the Eagles’ star players. Credit as well to Antonio Williams who has been an attacking force in the British Basketball League (BBL), this season, currently 2nd in the league for scoring and assists, for his defensive efforts in trying to contain Fletcher. As the game progressed both teams traded points and heading into the final quarter, the Patriots still holding a slender advantage, the scene was set for a season-defining final two minutes. The sellout crowd, playing their part, were at fever pitch, and as the clock ticked down the Patriots defence clamped down and forced a missed shot. Elvisi Dusha gathered in the rebound and the home team had less than a minute to hold on to make the playoffs. The Pats ran a play to take some time off the clock, and with just 21 seconds remaining in the game, Antonio Williams threw a picture perfect lob to the man of the hour, Rowell Graham-Bell, who grabbed the ball with two hands and threw down a monster dunk and the game was won. Final score 80-72.

Rowell Graham-Bell, who finished the game with 26 points and eleven rebounds was strangely calm after the game in a post match interview, saying “ We just had to get it done. It was get it done or go home.” He was asked how it felt to make the playoffs after a number of pundits had written the club off, and he replied “... Honestly, I expected it. I never go into any season, expecting not to make the playoffs. I went into the game thinking, let’s show everyone what we can do.” Rashad “Deuce” Hassan, who finished with 25 points and twelve rebounds in a classic performance, had this to say in his post match interview, “We know Newcastle, in the last decade, have won a lot of championships in the BBL and we knew today would not be easy. We have had to come in and play good defence… Credit to Newcastle, but I think we just wanted it more tonight and making the

playoffs in our first BBL season is incredible. We’ve faced a lot of adversities and to win tonight and make the playoffs, is great.” And it’s true. The Patriots didn’t win a single game this season until the middle of January. Carl Heslop, team owner had this to say regarding the massive turnaround his team has made, saying “Fantastic! From where we were at the beginning of the season to where we are now, it’s a phenomenal achievement for the club and for Plymouth basketball. Bring on Leicester!”

Finally, head coach Paul James had this to say in his post game interview, “I’m speechless… We had three weeks at the start of the season to put this team together, after the start we had in the cup and league losing fourteen games straight. Even during that time we played hard and set the basis for a good foundation moving forward. It’s amazing the achievement and what we’ve done here.

Not only on the floor with the players, but look at the crowd tonight, I’ve never seen a crowd like this in Pavilions since I’ve been here.” Looking ahead to Leicster in the playoff first round, Coach James was very realistic, “This was our final here today, we know that and we’re very realistic about what we can do. We’ll try and push Leicester as hard as we can… We’ll enjoy tonight and get back to training tomorrow and put a plan together to give ourselves an opportunity.”

It will indeed be Leicester in the first round of the playoffs and a tall order to knock off the number one team in the country, who have only lost two games in the league this season. They have the League and Cup titles already in their trophy cabinet this season and the Patriots will have their work cut out if they are to progress to the semi finals. That said, this Patriots team has fought adversity all season long and no team in the BBL looks forward to coming to a packed out pavilion to face the loudest fans in the league.
