ITS IN OUR HANDS Words from the Chairman - Carl Heslop

It’s a shame Glasgow couldn’t do the decent thing and get a result on the road against the Newcastle Eagles so that we could celebrate early but I guess the way this season has panned out we wouldn’t do it any other way.

The fact there is an expectation to deliver, we are packing the pavilions and our fanbase continues to grow means that a phenomenal job has been done this season to stabilise the professional basketball scene in Plymouth.

Whatever the result we have grown basketball participation by 300%, sold out every ticket at the pavilions four times already this season and beaten every club in the league at least once apart from Sheffield and Leicester. If someone had offered this at the beginning of the season, we would have snapped their hand off!

We also now have a tremendous foundation to build from which at the beginning of the season wasn’t possible. I’m very excited at the vision that now exists at the club and the plans to move this forward. Plymouth City Patriots is all about progression and we will continue to work hard to ensure we continue to deliver for the fanbase.

Our roster albeit hastily put together in a very frantic three weeks has developed and progressed into a unit which is competitive in every game. We look forward to developing this crew of guys and seeing where we can take this next season. Preparation and planning are crucial now and we have already started this process to improve all aspects on the court as much as we are able. Key to this is bringing back a core group of players if possible as we look to move away from one season player rosters in the future.

At this point I would like to take the opportunity to thank the team behind the team of PJ, Nickie and Paul who have worked with me tirelessly to deliver a very difficult season and although we are not where we ultimately want to be they have supported the project which wouldn’t have been achievable without them.

Come what may we have achieved the impossible this season and I look forward to a very load and proud Plymouth Pavilions today as we roar on our team who have given us an amazing ride this season. The fact that the playoffs today is in our hands shows the sheer volume of progression from xmas and I look forward to finishing the job today.

Good afternoon and welcome to the Pavilions for this our final BBL Championship league game of the 2021-22 season.

hopefully next season we will have the opportunity to build on what we’ve started.

Today we host the Newcastle Eagles in what is a one game shoot out. The winner of this game advances through to the playoffs and for the loser it’s pack your bags time! The Eagles are coached

by Ian Macleod, the club recently announced that he would be stepping down from his position as head coach. I’m sure he will be looking to end on a high.

The support of Marjon University has been great and thanks to the given in several areas. Will, Alex, Sophie, Izzy, Beth, Chris and Caroline, thank you for helping to get the team in the right shape physically, mentally and nutritionally. You all played a big part in the teams change of fortune.

Thanks also to Ben Fox, for his help with game analysis, Tony, Irene, Paul and the other game day volunteers, you guys have been amazing.

For me, it’s incredible to look back on the season and see just how far we have come from the start in September to being here in April, having a shot at making the playoffs in our first season if we win our final game today. We weren’t supposed to win a single game this season or even be anywhere near the playoff conversion, but thanks to many people we are here still fighting.

A big thank you to all our sponsors and you our fantastic supporters, without you we would not be here. However the biggest thank you goes to Carl Heslop. Carl had the belief and desire and drive in wanting to save basketball in plymouth. I don’t think he realised he would be creating something special, but he has and it’s been amazing to be part of the journey.

I want to thank a few people for their support and help in making this a very memorable campaign.

We are a small team in the office, but thanks to Paul and Nickie for their hard work throughout and I want to wish Nickie well as she moves on to pastures new after this today’s game.

What ever happens in the game today, we should be proud and celebrate this season, then look forward to the next! I extend a warm welcome to the Newcastle Eagles coaching staff and players for this winner takes all BBL championship match.
