A child anxiety solution for NSW public schools Interested?

After school leader training, you will identify an implementation coach for your school and commit to providing this person 0.1 release (or equivalent) each week for the two-years of the program. Training for the implementation coach will be held face-to-face. This person will lead the project in your school, inspire and support your school community and liaise with psychologist Michael Hawton

Your school’ s implementation coach will conduct monitoring and evaluation at key dates, as part of the Anxiety Project’ s implementation.

Larger schools may elect to train a second implementation coach.

Your teaching staff will teach seven Anxiety Project lessons, focussed on teaching return-to-calm skills, to students across all stages. These lesson plans will be provided. Your implementation coach and staff will collect data over a two-year window and provide this to the program management. This will be used to provide you with feedback and assess the effectiveness of the intervention.

Art of Leadership 2024

THIS IS A PRACTICAL, SKILL-BASED AND EXPERIENTIAL PROGRAM DESIGNED TO DRAW ON POWERFUL RESEARCH.

The Art of Leadership is structured upon a leadership effectiveness framework that identifies and builds the capabilities that both school experience and relevant research show to be essential to successful leadership.

Leadership of self

The framework assumes that self-leadership is the starting point of all leadership. If we are not leading and managing ourselves with maximum effectiveness, then we will find it difficult to be effective leaders of others.

Leadership of others

The second dimension of leadership is the leadership behaviour that influences and engages others. The leader’ s ability to influence the effectiveness of others, and the behaviours they use to gain that influence, are pivotal.

Leadership of teams

The third dimension of leadership is the capability required to create, build and sustain teams. This requires the leader to develop a compelling purpose and thoughtful processes to create groups that can work together with synergy and collaboration.

Leadership of organisations and systems

The fourth dimension of leadership is contextual. In order to be strategic and systematic, leaders must be able to recognise and act upon the patterns and complexities that arise in their work situations.

Each of these 4 dimensions is explored through activity, discussion and challenge. A significant time is spent on the practice of related skills.

Program delivery

This is a 6-day program designed for principals and school executive. The program is delivered in two 3-day phases, with a workplace learning element between the two phases.

The program is delivered in a range of venues, both rural and metropolitan venues across New South Wales.

About our Facilitator

Judy Hatswell, Educational Psychologist and Training Consultant

Judy is both a teacher and registered psychologist who has held managerial positions at state-wide and regional levels in student welfare, guidance and behaviour disorders. She is currently working as a self-employed training consultant. Through intensive training programs with a focus on leadership development across organisations, Judy is successfully imparting practical techniques and tools for immediate use to drive behavioural and organisational change.

Do you make those around you smarter?

We’ve all had experience with 2 dramatically different types of leaders

1.

Diminishers—leaders who drain intelligence, energy, and capability from the people around them

2.

Multipliers—leaders who use their intelligence to amplify the smarts and capabilities of the people around them.

WHAT PRINCIPALS AND SCHOOL LEADERS ARE SAYING

“Tough Conversations provides insight into what makes the conversations so tough; how to prepare, manage and prosper through those conversations; and then come away feeling energised with an issue resolved and/or a meaningful plan in place. People report feeling much better within themselves when they have this training to draw on; which also means that they don’t feel like they are personally in a firing line anymore! Everyone benefits. ” MALCOLM

ELLIOT, PRESIDENT APPA

“One of the best training sessions I have attended in over 20 years. The blend of education and psychological skills make the day pass quickly. The role plays were excellent because they provided insight into real life situations. ”

JANETTE ATCHISON, WOODCREST STATE COLLEGE

“Almost on a daily basis, principals and school leaders are confronted by the need to hold tough conversations. Whether with parents, students or staff we can hardly look forward to them. What we can do though is be equipped and prepared to manage these conversations and get the best possible result – without too much stress. ” DENNIS

NSW PPA Vision: To empower school leaders by delivering quality professional learning

We sat down with Yasmin London from ySafe by Linewize to discuss all things cyber safety.

After spending 13 years in the New South Wales Police Force, Yasmin contributes unique expertise in the field of cyber safety. Having operated at the coalface dealing with the real life consequences of online abuse experienced by young people, Yasmin felt impassioned about the need for preventative action in cyber safety, in order to minimise the need for critical intervention.

Who are ySafe?

Originally founded by psychologists, the need was identified for a multidisciplinary approach to cyber safety education and management. With that, their team expanded to include clinical psychologists, ex-police officers and teachers who are leaders in the field of cyber safety and social media. Their combined experience in child development, research, policing, and classroom contexts has provided them with a unique insight into the challenges and opportunities that participating in a digital environment presents to students, parents, and schools.

How does ySafe's work align with NSWPPA's key values?

"Principals are the heart and soul of schools, and we are committed to ensuring they have the resources and expertise to support their communities in the online safety space. When it comes to principal wellbeing, leadership and operations, the online safety space can feel overwhelming and endless in its changes and real world implications. We work hard to support the leaders in our partner schools to resource and relieve that burden by providing trusted, engaging and impactful education services that help school communities not just survive, but thrive online."

What services can ySafe provide to NSW Public Schools?

What motivates you to promote cyber safety?

"Being a police officer for 13 years, I saw the good, the bad and the ugly when it came to the online world. I wanted to deliver information that resonated with young people and ensure they had advocacy and knowledge that built their capacity to deal with the digital world, rather than the disconnected fear mongering approach I saw, which ultimately leads to disengagement from services by young people. The online world is now ubiquitous and only going to become more and more present in our lives, so we need to build our digital resilience as human beings in order to deal with its challenges, and importantly, to enjoy all it has to offer."

What impact does ySafe have?

"When it comes to impact, we are obviously in a lot of schools and have been for many years, but the true impact we see is in our day to day when we have young people approach us and tell us they learned something new, didn’t feel judged or patronised, and that they loved our empowered approach to the use of technology. It's why we spend years in schools, helping students and communities grow. We don't come in for a session or two, we are about partnering with our schools, and helping them with a holistic approach to not only education, but the preventative, interventional and wellbeing opportunities they may not be seeing."

"ySafe forms part of the Education & Engagement arm of a global organisation called Linewize. Linewize protects and supports 15 million children in 27,000 schools on their digital journey’s, worldwide. At ySafe we deliver educational content, as well as resources and support to all school stakeholders, providing relatable, reliable information to the right people at the right time through our Online Safety Hubs We also support schools to support their parents in their homes with our parental control tool Qustodio, which allows parents to actively involve themselves in their children's online activities by gaining visibility on what their children are doing and the power to manage their access to risky content and screen time. It’s brilliant!"

How has ySafe supported schools?

"We’ve had countless situations where our presentations have been the catalyst for students reporting or disclosing incidents which were previously unknown, or situations where parents have reported to us that our advice has helped them intervene and identify strangers contacting their children, or even when quite extensive grooming processes have been identified and police have become involved. I think what has always resonated with me is that principals and school leaders are always saying they feel safe and comfortable because they know we have their backs. Schools are busy places, and principals are always relied upon to be the north star and ultimate source of truth. That's a lot of pressure and responsibility, especially when it comes to a rapidly evolving space like the online world. They need help, and we are there for them."

NSW PPA Vision: To empower school leaders by delivering quality professional learning

How does ySafe educate and raise awareness about cyber safety?

"We are extremely proud to be able to support schools in a variety of ways. We predominantly work by providing education to all year groups, from K- 12, as well as providing personal development and education resources for staff and parents. Our approach is rooted in the belief that every person in the school community should receive the education and support they need, and that the delivery of services should be executed with a whole of school approach."

"In addition to working directly with schools, we also forge partnerships with industry bodies such as the NSWPPA and the Anglican Schools Commission, to deliver education and digital wellbeing solutions at scale. One partnership we are particularly excited about is our collaboration with Macquarie Bank (one of our commercial partners). Through this collaboration, we are now able to level the playing field for regional and remote communities because Macquarie Bank is subsidising free access to our Digital Experts Academy Program, for 250 regional or remote school communities. This gamified online learning platform is run in the classroom by teachers and focuses on developing students' social and emotional learning (SEL) capabilities. The skills learned through the DX are applicable to both in-person and online environments, and are now available for the first 250 schools to sign up."

What are some emerging cyber threats across Australia?

"Cyberbullying and a subset behaviour of that known as Cyberostracism (where kids are intentionally or maliciously left out of online situations) are always prevalent. Especially after the experience of COVID which left a lot of young people feeling anxious and sensitive about the state of the world. We have schools still dealing with weekend activities spilling into the school yard, and parent expectations about solving peer to peer issues that are occuring online. We are also sadly seeing the increase of predation and sextortion style scams victimising kids at younger and younger ages (particularly boys right now), and the rise of misinformation and deep fake technology which can be problematic when used for the wrong purposes."

What steps do ySafe take to stay up to date with these emerging threats?

"We have a team of researchers, content writers and staff members from a varied mix of professional disciplines like clinical psychologists, ex law enforcement officers and education and technology experts. We all collaborate with industry bodies like the Office of the eSafety Commissioner, and pay attention to the latest research coming out of groups like the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, NCMEC, the World Health Organisation and other important voices in education and online safety to ensure we have the latest, evidence based information and strategies to help our schools."

How does ySafe collaborate with organisations?

"We are big believers in diversity when it comes to education, and that different voices reinforcing the right messages for our audiences is imperative. We therefore work with other online safety and child wellbeing experts and refer work, we sit on round tables and share our learnings so that schools and students can be the ultimate beneficiaries of that shared knowledge and expertise. There is no one size fits all approach, or one person or organisation that has all the answers all the time. It's about a community lead, collaborative and intentional approach by an industry that understands how to create impact, and yield the best educational outcomes for our kids and communities."

What

are some of ySafe future initiatives?

Are you a regional/remote school and interested in our Digital Experts Academy?

"We always have a lot of projects on the boil, however I'm most looking forward to working with the NSW Primary Principals Association to help guide students, schools, teachers or school leaders in improving their online safety practices, and to empower their school communities to thrive in online environments."

Yasmin has a scheduled webinars for Principals and school leaders on Tuesday the 8th August at 8am - 9am in Term 3, and Tuesday the 14th November from 8am9am in Term 4. Leading at the Speed of Trust

Trust is Vital for High-Performing Teams

Water is the vital substance that sustains all life on this planet When it’s there, everything flourishes and grows When it’s not there, everything withers and dies

The same is true for trust. Where there is no trust, relationships decay, projects fail, customers go to competitors, initiatives under-perform, and work grinds to a crawl.

Get Results and Inspire Trust

Like a ripple in a pond, trust begins with you Leaders who attend the highly interactive Leading at the Speed of Trust 3.0 work session will increase their personal credibility and practice specific behaviors to increase trust. As a result, they will be able to better manage change and lead high-performing teams that are agile, collaborative, innovative, and engaged

Instead of just attending a Leading at the Speed of Trust 3 0 work session, leaders learn to apply and sustain a new language and set of behaviors to real work. They learn about powerful tools and processes to sustain learning for fifty-two weeks following the work session, helping leaders engage their teams in a completely different way to be more committed and accountable to results.

PROBLEM

• Your team isn’t communicating

• Deadlines are being missed and as a result, your team’s reputation is suffering.

• There is a lack of consistent language and training

SOLUTION

• An increase in trust leads to an increase in communication.

• Managers are given the tools to teach, succeed, and keep the team on task

• Sustained learning results in better performance.

Now retired Terry am doing consultancy work for the NSW Department of Education and is also a facilitator for the Speed of Trust leadership program for the NSWPPA. Terry strongly believes The Speed of Trust is a great course, because it establishes a case for trust, explores self trust, relationship trust, organisational trust and even explores your legacies with market and societal trust.

Terry states, " As we move through a rapidly changing society with 24 hour news cycles, fake news, health pandemics and increases in leadership pressures perhaps the greatest leadership trait you can have and develop is trust. "

The Middle Leadership Imperativ

Has your network invested into your Middle Le

A four-day professional learning opportunity for Assistant Principals addressing the three key themes of middle leading, collaborative professionalism and ideas in action.

Who will benefit Principals and school executive Program Overview

The middle leader has become increasingly more important to the work of schools through increased accountability and responsibility of principals (Dinham 2016). The role of the middle leader is evolving with specific purpose in facilitating collegial professional learning and in the development of quality student learning (Ronnerman 2014). However, ambiguity still exists in relation to what middle leaders are expected to do (Fluckiger et al 2005).

Participation in this course will empower middle leaders through a practical understanding of the environmental and personal inputs into middle leadership, the key roles middle leaders play and the potential outputs in relation to teachers and students. This course will address an extensive review of available research on middle leadership leading to an effective undertaking of the middle leadership role in NSW schools through the recognition that middle leadership is teacher driven, site responsive and encompasses team based professional learning

COURSE COMPONENETS

MIDDLE LEADING

This module will examine the role of the middle leader within the leadership structure of schools; leadership and management as a set of abilities and skills; as well as the impact of school context on the middle leadership role. Leadership qualities and character strengths will be viewed in line with a developing theoretical model of middle leadership (De Noble 2018).

COLLABORATIVE PROFESSIONALISM

This module will centre on collaboration and building social capital among teachers and other educators to improve student learning. Middle leaders will be supported in how to collaborate more deeply in ways that achieve greater impact covering topics: Leading a team by bringing people on the journey with you; Communicating effectively including difficult conversations; Importance of trust; and Feedback

IDEAS IN ACTION

PHASES OF THE PROGRAM

Help

Phase1-Research

We partner with Deakin Business School to understand the world of school leaders At the start of The Flourish Move- ment program, the participants go through a thorough re- search process This includes a survey, a 10-day diary study and a one-on-one interview to assess the individ-ual’s over- all wellbeing, as well as give them a clearer snapshot of their work and personal lives, where their time goes and how this affects them in their role as a school leader While there are a number of surveys out there showing how poor the well- being of school leaders is, the addition of the diary study and interview gives individuals greater clarity around the habits that are diminishing their wellbeing It also increases their readiness for change Finally, this allows us to have a better understanding of each cohort and its needs, which will inform the facilitator to tailorthecontentoftheworkshopstothespecificneedsofthatgroup

Phase 2 - Intervention

Education

4 full day workshops, one per term Educators gain knowledge on the latest psychological research, learn and develop strategies and techniques in relation to working as a School Leader, and develop action plans that allow them to clarify and identify their individual drivers for change

Behaviour change strategies – These are a series of initiatives that will facilitate behaviour change and make it easier for the information presented in the sessions to be implemented

Collegiate support – By attending these sessions together, School Leaders will be provided with the opportunity to connect and collaborate with their peers, which will then enable them to create and improve their professional network By sharing experiences and opinions through group discussion, they will broaden their knowledge and capabilities and, therefore, improve their professional practice and performance
