This week the media industry, a community and a family lost a legend when Mr. William Zwart, owner and editor of Platinum Gazette suddenly passed away. William made his mark everywhere he went, a leader that had the uncanny knack to treat everyone the same - from the Queen of England (who he met and photographed upon an official visit to Namibia) to business people, politicians, the local hawkers and people he met in passing. His career was something most people in the media and in business would envy - from being political editor guiding radio and television broadcasts during the transition and new democracy of Namibia, to being one of Caxton Publishers and Printers’ Managers of the Year before starting his own business to pursue his own passion to make a difference. William was a passionate and outspoken Christian. He vowed to carry the message of Christ through Platinum Gazette. He tried to live his faith in a practical way through a Bible verse close to his heart - Isaiah 40:1 (KJV) “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God”. His bright orange Jeep was always welcome in any village in the area and during times of protest was an indicator of who is on the way and assisted with safe passing to cover news stories. This vehicle also carried a carefully painted angel wing on the one side. He loved telling the story about this wing - saying “the one wing is visible while the missing wing represents being carried through faith”. He came upon a story about brokenness with purpose that touched him deeply. It was about an angel that accidently hurt one wing and suddenly became visible to people on earth. It was very sore and the angel questioned why this happened and whether it was God’s will. God responded that it was not his will for bad things to happen, and even though in his power to heal the wing, it would not be done. God also said, “What you think is important to you, is not important compared to what I need to get done through you. You will understand later.” As the angel was taken under the care of humans who tried to assist with getting the wing fixed things started to happen. As wings are more the speciality of veterinarians the angel was taken to one that eventually presented the news that the wing cannot be fixed. Both the angel and the people were devastated. However, the people overcome their grief and mobilized committees, fund drives, campaigns, and community events on the angel’s behalf. People joined hands and worked together for a purpose. There was a huge outpouring of love for the angel with the broken wing. As time passed, the angel began to understand why God had not fixed the broken wing. God had not fixed the angel’s broken wing because of “the love thing”. God did not heal the broken wing so love would spring forth among the people who came in contact with the angel. Only when the Lord accomplished what he wanted did the angel transform and went back to heaven, healed. William believed that we all have our ‘brokenness’ that the Lord will use us for His purpose and that we will only be completely ‘whole’ again when we are welcomed at the throne of the Lord. William - legend, leader, comforter you will be missed dearly and your life has left a lasting legacy for us to follow.
