Media statement on the riots and Marula Platinum Mine Closure The tribal authorities of Kgwete, Mashishi and Manyaka, together with the Marula Six Host Communities Forum (Community Forum), held mediated consultative meetings aimed at resolving the community riots at Marula Platinum Mine which have resulted in the temporary shut-down of operations at the mine. These affected community leadership structures agreed to further engagements in a bid to speedily resolve the underlying issues since the riots and the resultant mine closure were both detrimental to the communities and the mine. The talks ran for three consecutive days, from Monday 25 March to Wednesday 27 March 2019, in Burgersfort. The management of Marula Platinum Mine was represented in the meetings and, on the last day, the LED Manager of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality joined the meeting, providing invaluable advice and support to the process. All tribal authorities on whose land the Marula Platinum Mine is operating were invited to the meetings, unfortunately, not all attended, despite numerous efforts to encourage their participation. As can be expected, there were some heated debates in the meetings but mutual respect, tolerance and cooperation prevailed and for this, we commend all who participated. The community leadership structures (Tribal Authorities and Community Forum) agreed in writing to some good and progressive resolutions. They also agreed that Marula Platinum Mine should resume business operations and pledged to ensure that there will be no further riots or disruptions by the communities. The two tribal authorities that abstained from the aforementioned talks will be re-engaged with an aim of getting them into the broader process towards ensuring an all-inclusive engagement platform between Marula mine and its host communities. It is worth noting that despite their abstinence from the talks, the two tribal authorities also signed resolutions against further riots and disruptions of the mine’s operations by communities. Accordingly, the Marula Platinum Mine operations resumed on 27 March 2019 and the situation has normalised. “The management of Marula Platinum Mine wishes to thank everyone who participated in this process for the commitment to finding an agreeable resolution as the continuation of operations at the mine is in the best interests of all its stakeholders,” said Mogale Mashilane, Executive: Marula Operations.

Revelation 3:7-8 King James Version (KJV) 7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 8 I know thy works: behold, I have set before thee an open door, and no man can shut it: for thou hast a little strength, and hast kept my word, and hast not denied my name.

Developing suppliers to create prosperity The Sekhukhune District Municipality this week Tuesday launched their Enterprise and Supplier Development Programme at Winterveld Recreation Club in Steelpoort. The Executive Mayor, Cllr K.S. Ramaila delivered the keynote address and stressed the importance of developing black business in the area while empowering co-operatives and other initiatives to create jobs and flourish to bring prosperity to the district. Ramaila asked the private sector and especially mines in the area to assist them in their

endeavors to deliver on infrastructure such as water and sanitation. He also stressed that the support of business and communities is necessary for the license of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in the area. It is envisioned that a SEZ will boost development and create even more opportunities. The day’s activities also included a variety of presentations that touched on subjects such as B-BBEE and input from entities like the Business Counsel.

Danger Members of the public alerted the newspaper to telephone poles that were blown over during a big storm in February. The poles still have wires connected and is very close to the edge of the road. Especially at night this poses a danger as someone veering off the road cannot easily see the cables. Platinum Gazette contacted Telkom and although official feedback is still awaited, an official called to make sure of the exact location and said that a contracted will be sent to recover the falled poles. He added that the affected lines are no longer in use and should thus not be affecting any service from their side.

Young beauty do the area proud Lehlogonolo Mabanna (8) represented Limpopo in the Miss Elite SA 2019 competition. This young beauty from Burgersfort first walked away with the Miss Elite Limpopo title in her age category and was the Miss Elite 2019 Public Choice winner as well. As the winner she headed to Klerksdorp in

the North West to participate in the national competition against contestants from other provinces. There she came fourth overall. Lehlogonolo is very passionate about modelling and participating in beauty pageants. She may be young, but already has a lot of experience having modelled clothes for Jet Stores in Polokwane and participating in the Tiny Miss Limpopo Mzantzi Africa competition. She is also part of a local modelling academy that teaches young girls to be models. The Miss Elite South Africa competition also requires contestants to be involved in their communities and give back. Lehlogonolo worked with several charity projects, including the donation of toys to 26 orphaned children at an orphanage in Ga-Manoke village. “I would like to give thanks to everyone who supported my projects and assisted me in my journey. The best gift is giving from the heart she said this week.

Your opinion on the interaction Politicians accusing the media as being biased, driving personal agendas and even saying that they are writing lies, is nothing new. In recent months the EFF’s Julius Malema complained that his party is being sidestepped by the media when it comes to coverage of events. He was also recently in the news for publishing journalist Karima Brown’s personal details on Twitter. This led to her receiving threats of rape and physical harm. (His initial tweet has since been deleted, but he still accused Brown of being partial). A legal battle is now in being fought about this issue. This week at a press conference held by the ANC, the party’s deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte accused an eNCA reporter Samkele Maseko, for asking “attacking” questions and accused him of intimidation. Both Duarte and Maseko allegedly called each other ‘bullies’. After the incident the ANC stood by Duarte, as they’ve stood behind the party’s secretary-general Ace Magashule. Magashule is allegedly considering legal action against journalist Pieter-Louis Myburgh. Myburgh has written a book titled Gangster State - Unravelling Ace Magashule’s Web of Capture. According to the book, Mgashule allegedly benefitted and were involved in so-called dodgy deals while being premier and provincial chairperson of the party. The ANC had accused newspapers and Myburgh of being like Stratcom and of publishing propaganda. In February journalists were blocked from attending a DA press briefing in Durban. It is alleged that armed Metro guards removed members of the media from the venue. The press briefing was eventually held on the steps of the venue under the watchful eye of police officers. The South African National Editor’s Forum (Sanef) reacted to the various incidents with concern and an intention to speak with those involved (both the media and the politicians) and an international Committee to Protect Journalists based in New York expressed concern over the threats directed towards Brown. In light of the recent public altercations, Platinum Gazette asked readers how they perceive the interaction between the media and politicians.

Mr Myles Dibakwane said: “The media is doing the right things. Many politicians hide things and the public need to know about it. People are free now and they have a right to know”.

Mr Frans Maroga said: “I think that sometimes politicians don’t like the media because they are hiding things that journalists expose. Politicians are too sensitive. It is important that the public know about corruption and other things through the media”.

Mr Peter Ndlovu said: “Politicians have no right to criticize. Journalists are just doing their jobs. The journalists are close to the people and the people need to know what happens with corruption and other things in government. The journalists are also taking our stories to government. Our journalists are near to us. Freedom of the media and freedom of speech is important”.

Mr Joseph Makola said: “The media is portraying us as a country to the outside world and sometimes the way they do it, is not looking good. Positive reporting is always welcome - as long as it is the truth, good or bad. Political parties do not really have something against the media, but sometimes the media is using their reporting to generate business. The potential of journalists being ‘bought’ to do favourable reporting on a specific party is also big”. With him is Reabetswe.

Mr Michael Sekhukhune said: “The journalists are doing their jobs. The politicians just want to hide things with the elections coming. There must be freedom of speech”.

Mr MD Mashabela said: “I don’t think political parties are being treated unfairly by journalists”.

Ms Lydia Matjie said: “Sometimes the media is biased. They must treat all political parties equal. Not all the media or journalists, but some of them are being ‘bought’ to go after a certain political party. If the politicians are not satisfied they should sit down and talk face to face with the journalists. Journalists should also verify their facts before they report on it”.

Mr Michael Madigage said: “They (politicians) are trying to hide bad things. We, the people are happy with the media. The media is exposing the politicians’ weaknesses and that is why they are unhappy – especially before the elections”.

Mr Lucas Serage said: “Journalists are professional. In most cases what they see, hear and report from the scene is true. Some journalists however, can be bought to damage a politician’s credibility. Some politicians also don’t have respect and are hiding behind so-called ‘political language’. I’m not comfortable with the politicians playing against each other. Politicians should behave dignified and not shout on TV. It is not necessary to portray an image of a rascal or even a radical. Behave respectable and be a leader that sets an example”. Left: Ms Melita Mokoena said: “Why cry if you have nothing to hide? The journalists are doing their jobs. As a person in the public eye you must know that everything will be disclosed. The media is not biased in my opinion. If you work in politics you should be clean as a white sheet. Don’t ever lie”.

between the media and politicians

Ms Rachel Tjie and Ms Mercy Magaba said: “Journalists are just doing their jobs. Politicians just want to hide things. We feel journalists are being fair. Politicians should stop accusing journalists of things and start delivering what they’ve promised us”. Mr Peter Mokgwatsana said: “The media is not biased and they are just doing their jobs very well. Politicians should not fight with journalists. In South Africa there are too many parties and they should respect freedom of speech”.

Ms Anna Mathonsi said: “The journalists are just doing their jobs. Politicians have to be open. The media is not biased. Some media however, not all of them, but some of them do exaggerate and add their own story to issues being covered to make sure people will buy the newspapers. Some politicians have a point about certain journalists, but not all of them. Politicians like Malema just wants the publicity, that is why he always has an issue”.

Left: Ms Maggy Mosoma said: “Politicians always like to complain. They don’t solve problems. The journalists are just doing their jobs correctly. Sometimes politicians complain because journalists expose their corruption”.

Mr Johannes Moropa, Mr Kgaogelo Kumalo, Mr Canny Sekgobela, Mr Thato Lesele, Ms Prudance Rangwaga and Ms Thato Mohlala said: “They are afraid the media will expose them. If they don’t do anything wrong, they should not fight with media. We believe journalists are writing the truth. If politicians fight with journalists it shows that the truth is coming out”.

Ms Tebogo Mashigo, Ms Rosa Makola and Ms Irene Ramoshaba said: “Journalists have to adhere to a code of conduct. Some journalists are just telling the truth while others are being biased. We don’t really trust all the media out there”.

Mr Khutso Moshwane said: “The media is doing its work. They should talk without fear where there are points like corruption, irrespective of which political party is affected. Politicians are crying against the media because it is now going into election time”.

Mr Abram Phako said: “The journalists are just doing their jobs. They must be able to proof what they report in a court. The politicians just want attention. To tell the people that they are the best while looking good. So they don’t like things being exposed by journalists”. With him is Romeo Phako.

Mr Mmekeng Sekgogoba said: “Journalists are reporting the truth. What they say is really the reality. Most of the politicians are not clean and that is why they are afraid. If you are clean you don’t have to cry. I think that minority parties’ politicians crying about the media just want attention”.

Mr Resman Kobe said: “The politicians don’t have to fear anything. If they fight like they do now, it looks like there is a skeleton at the back they try to hide. They are scared of what may come out before the elections. The journalists must go on to do their jobs. They help the public by revealing hidden agendas”.

Ms Shirley Ntsie said: “If they have nothing to hide, why complain? I don’t think the journalists will put their jobs in jeopardy by lying. I think the media is being fair towards politicians and political parties”. With her is Thabo. Mr Tumelo Shadi said: “The journalists are doing their jobs. Politicians are in the public eye and should not be so sensitive. If you’ve got nothing to hide, don’t cry as journalists are doing their jobs”.
