ENGCON’S NEW 2023 CATALOGUE, WITH EVEN SMARTER PRODUCTS TO CHANGE THE WORLD OF DIGGING

Engcon, the leading, global manufacturer of tiltrotators, quick hitches and accessories for excavators, is constantly working to develop its products. Recently, the 2023 product catalogue was released, containing a series of innovations ready to meet the needs of customers.

Previously, engcon presented its third generation tiltrotator together with a series of product innovations for accessories. engcon’s third generation tiltrotators were first launched in May 2022 at the Norwegian construction trade fair called Vei og Anlegg. The new tiltrotator system will transform the excavation industry with its smart technology that meets the increased demands of electrification, digitisation, safety, and sustainability.

Now, engcon presents updates and solutions for the needs of end users, with comfort and safety in focus. Among other things, engcon’s removable grapple cassette GRD60 for excavators with a tonnage of 14-19 has been updated with oil couplings as standard for smoother handling. The grip cassette is also angled down to 15 degrees to give the opportunity to work in different positions and provides a longer picking range. It is easily hooked into the attachment bracket, locked and the hydraulics are connected with a

single hand grip.

“Thanks to our innovation-driven work with a focus on the end customer, our customers can trust that engcon always delivers state-of-the-art technology. Our package must be the comprehensive solution and the premium product that our customers want, now and in the future,” says Martin Engström, Product Manager at engcon.

engcon develops its waste cassettes

The tiltrotator system allows for a range of different attachments, including the option to connect a waste cassette. This is something that has been well received by customers who have requested several sizes with the same characteristics as the existing waste cassettes in the range. Now there is also a removable waste cassette in the tonnage 4-6 adapted for S40 attachment. With engcon’s tool mounts, it is prepared for both removable grapple cassettes and removable sweep cassettes.

Another improvement is that all our detachable brooms are delivered with a narrow brush set that has been developed for use in, for example, house drainage, cable digging or other hard-toreach surfaces.

“It’s incredibly fun when our customers request development of our products. It shows that they actively use and

appreciate the products, with the help of their feedback we get the opportunity to launch updates and developments that are tailored to their needs,” continues Martin Engström. See the entire product catalogue here (link). Several of these product innovations were presented on March 14–18 at the year’s largest machine fair, Conexpo 2023, Las Vegas, USA.

engcon is the leading global supplier of tiltrotators and associated equipment that increase excavators’ efficiency, flexibility, profitability and safety. With knowledge, commitment and a high level of service, engcon’s approximately 400 employees create success for their customers. engcon was founded in 1990, headquartered in Strömsund, Sweden and meets the market through 13 local sales companies and an established network of dealers around the world. Net sales amounted to approximately SEK 1.9 billion in 2022. engcon’s B share is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. n

JCB WINS ITS BIGGEST EVER UK ORDER AS MORRIS LESLIE INVESTS

JCB has won its biggest ever deal in the UK after rental firm Morris Leslie Plant Hire placed an order for £87.5 million worth of machines – including a big fleet of 3CX backhoe loaders.

The huge order from the Perth-based company, which operates nationally, includes a bumper deal for 50 iconic JCB backhoe loaders, at a time when new figures show a resurgence in demand for backhoes in the UK, with the market growing by more than 12 per cent in 2022. The investment will also see Morris Leslie Plant Hire take delivery of excavators, site dumpers, Loadall telescopic handlers and compaction equipment, underlining its commitment to provide housebuilders and the construction sector with one of the industry’s most up-to-date fleets.

Manufactured at JCB’s factories in Rocester and Cheadle, Staffordshire, all the new machines are powered by the latest Stage V engines which deliver low emissions. They are also fitted with the JCB LiveLink telematics system which enables Morris Leslie Plant Hire and its rental customers to monitor the safety, productivity and emissions of the machines. The order will be supplied by dealer Scot JCB to Morris Leslie’s 14 nationwide depots throughout 2023. Morris Leslie, Chairman of the Group, said: “We are delighted to have agreed our largest ever order with our long-term partner JCB to support our 2023 growth plans and by the end of the year our entire JCB fleet will be operating with the latest Stage V engines.

“The backhoe loader part of the order is particularly pleasing, and we look forward to seeing ongoing growth of our JCB 3CX fleet. The backhoe continues to be hugely popular with our customers thanks to its excellent loading and excavating capabilities and the ability to travel directly to the site, cutting the need for costly transportation. Scot JCB and other JCB dealers around the UK

continue to provide first-class service to our depots and our customers.”

JCB Sales MD Marco Bersellini said:

“We are proud of our long-standing partnership with Morris Leslie Plant Hire. This deal demonstrates confidence in the construction market and confirms that JCB has exactly the right products to meet the needs of hirers and end users.”

CATERPILLAR CROWNS WORLD CHAMPION OF 2022/2023

GLOBAL OPERATOR CHALLENGE

Patrick Doheny from Australia won the final competition alongside other awards presented by Caterpillar during CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023.

More than 5,500 machine operators worldwide have been competing in the Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge since the spring of 2022, and in March, one of them emerged as the “World Champion” – the best Cat construction machine operator on the planet.

On Tuesday, March 14, Patrick Doheny of Australia took the crown out of nine finalists from around the world who competed in the final round of the Global Operator Challenge in the Cat Operator Stadium in Las Vegas.

Caterpillar’s year-long Global Operator Challenge is one of the largest construction industry events, with operators from nearly three dozen countries participating. The Challenge highlights the amazing ways construction machine operators masterfully guide Cat machines and use the latest

technologies to get the job done.

“Caterpillar created this competition to celebrate machine operators who build our world, advocate and drive awareness for their trade, and highlight solutions that address jobsite challenges,” said Jason Hurdis, Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge Execution Lead and Global Market Professional.

“All of the competitors – and especially our nine finalists –showed tremendous skills and abilities operating the latest Cat construction machines and technologies, manoeuvring through some difficult challenges and showing the world the invaluable role they play in infrastructure creation.”

The Challenge kicked off in the spring of 2022 with more than 10,000 operators worldwide signing up to compete. After a pre-qualification phase, the first round featured 5,500 contestants competing in local events organized by 77 Cat dealers in 32 countries. The second round in the fall of 2022 consisted of four regional events held in the United States, Brazil, Spain, and Japan. These competitions included digging a trench, loading a precise amount of dirt, and hauling or maneuvering the machines through obstacles.

The third and final round in March in Las Vegas was the ultimate test of precision. Grouped into teams of three – Team

Americas, Team Europe, and Team Asia –the nine finalists competed individually and as teams, as they faced three challenges in a specially constructed stadium featuring stands, fans, big-screen TVs, and play-byplay announcers.

The finals kicked off with the “Fork ‘n Loader” challenge, where each operator used the Cat 950 wheel loader with Payload technology to load and move material through specified locations on the course. The “Backhoe Services” challenge had operators using both ends of the Cat 420 XE backhoe to open a small box and precisely place small objects inside. This challenge was designed by Jaus Neigum, the 2020 Caterpillar Global Operator Challenge World Champion,

16 APRIL 2023 PLANT PLANET NEWS

and highlighted Caterpillar’s Customer Value Agreements and services offerings. During the final “Trench Run” challenge, operators showed off their trenching skills using a Cat 315 excavator equipped with Grade technology.

Final scores were based on the operator’s skills, efficiency, and competence in executing a variety of tasks, with penalties imposed for errors. Awards were given to the overall event champion, the individual with the lowest time in each skills challenge, and the team with the lowest combined score. The operators completed the challenges using Cat construction machines integrated with the latest machine-control and payload technologies, including Cat Payload, Grade and Command, Cat Grade Assist, rearview cameras, return to dig and return to carry.

Final Awards

Patrick Doheny from Australia was crowned the champion. Caterpillar awarded him with a trip for two to a location where Caterpillar has one of its worldwide production facilities.

“I am beyond thrilled to have earned the title of the best Caterpillar machine operator on the planet,” Doheny said. “Kudos to Caterpillar for hosting such an incredible event to highlight the importance of our profession. It is truly a dream come true to see your life’s passion be rewarded in such an amazing way.”

In second place was Matt Ferris from the United States, and third place was awarded to Łukasz Mokrzyński from Poland.

Other awards presented were:

• “Fork ‘n Loader” challenge winner –Patrick Doheny from Australia

• “Backhoe Services” challenge winner – John Schiedeck from the United States

• “Trench Run” challenge winner –Łukasz Mokrzyński from Poland

• Team champion Team Americas (Fernando Do Nascimento from Brazil and Matt Ferris and John Schiedeck, both from the United States)

CPA REACTS TO THE CHANCELLOR’S SPRING BUDGET

Following Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s Spring Budget earlier today, Kevin Minton, Chief Executive of the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) said: “Steps to boost business investment and maintain the freeze on fuel duty are welcome. However, we are seeking clarification from the Treasury on the details around the successor to the super-deduction allowance (SDA), and whether the plant-hire sector can qualify for this new scheme.

“Following the announcements on the delay to HS2 last week, a Budget for growth needs firm commitments from

government on future infrastructure spending and projects. Proposals in the Budget to create Great British Nuclear, while welcome, do not provide immediate comfort to the construction sector, given these plans are medium to long-term goals. However, we hope plans to provide the Carbon Capture Usage and Storage scheme with its £20bn fund, could provide some level of confidence for infrastructure planning.

“The construction sector may welcome the Chancellor’s plans to attract over 50s to the workplace to help address the skills shortfall the industry is facing. However, this new scheme must complement existing initiatives already in place.”

“THE SKY’S THE LIMIT”: FIRST LR 1400 SX IN OPERATION

Liebherr’s largest multi-purpose crawler crane found its first assignment in Atlanta, Georgia - on a construction site almost fit for a film. Full Tilt Crane Services is using the LR 1400 SX to lift concrete tilt-up panels, which are being manufactured on site by their parent company Martin Concrete Construction, Inc. Together, they are a one-stop shop for tilt-up projects. Full Tilt Crane Services selected the new crane from Nenzing in order to respond to the changing market.

“To lift our biggest parts!” That was just one of the reasons why Full Tilt Crane Services added the LR 1400 SX to its fleet. “We bought the machine to meet the needs of our customers: to lift larger and heavier pieces at one time,” explains Managing Director Jason Richardson. Liebherr-Werk Nenzing GmbH developed the LR 1400 SX because of this market requirement, to provide a versatile crawler crane for ever heavier and bigger loads. With the new model, the factory has successfully expanded its portfolio to include loads up to 400 tonnes.

The tilt-up panels, which the LR 1400 SX is lifting on the construction site in Atlanta, are produced on-site. No precast elements and no truck deliveries.

The largest tilt-up panel has a height of approximately 34 metres. “You’re not going to be able to do that in the precast market.” The tilt-up panels produced by Martin Concrete Concrete on-site have the advantage that it makes them considerably more flexible than precast.

This is where the size of the LR 1400 SX plays a significant role. “The sky’s

the limit,” jokes Jason Richardson. It will probably be boundless when the construction of the Electric Owl Studios is complete and ready for “Action”.

QUICK SET-UP. SAFE OPERATION.

During the development stage, it was important for Liebherr that set-up and transportation are easy, despite the size of the crawler crane. With the compact transport weight of 46 tonnes, it can be easily moved between the jobsites. “The self-assembly system of the crane is very important to us. We don’t need an assist crane. Right now, we can fully assembly our LR 1400 SX in under 12 hours.” Full Tilt Crane Services frequently moves from jobsite to jobsite, often completing their projects within one to two weeks. The fact that the LR 1400 SX can be moved quickly is a great advantage for the company.

Platform and railings remain attached to the uppercarriage during transportation and only need to be folded down. Thanks to the self-assembly system, the boom sections, the carbody counterweight, crawlers and hoist winches can be easily assembled and disassembled without the need for an auxiliary crane. The crane can even hydraulically lift, lower, and secure the 150-tonne rear counterweight without assistance. The rear counterweight itself is modular and can be equipped with 5 or 10-tonne counterweight slabs, depending on requirements.

With the assistance systems ground pressure visualization, Gradient Travel Aid or Boom Up-and-Down Assistant, Liebherr has paid special attention to the

safety concept of the new weightlifter. In the meantime, Full Tilt Crane Services has ordered a second LR 1400 SX. “Our expectations from the first one met everything we were looking for. It’s a great machine,” enthuses Jason Richardson.

EXCITING NEWS! OUR POWERED ACCESS FLEET IS MAKING A MAJOR TRANSITION...TO GREEN POWER

Introducing the newest additions to our powered access division - the hybrid boom lifts and electric rough terrain scissor lifts from Dingli. And we’re thrilled to announce that MPH will be the first company in the UK to receive the new Hybrid Booms. These new models of 16 and 20 metre Dingli Hybrid Booms will be on display at the Vertikal Days event, taking place in May at the East of England Show Ground, Peterborough.

In the construction industry, access equipment such as boom lifts and scissors lifts are essential for working at heights. However, the use of diesel-powered machines is often accompanied by a range of problems including environmental pollution and high fuel costs. Therefore, we have decided to take a step forward in addressing these problems by transitioning our powered access division fleet from diesel-powered equipment to hybrid booms and electric-only rough terrain scissors.

We work closely with our customers, and we understand the importance of providing equipment that is reliable, efficient, and environmentally friendly. We have invested in new hybrid booms that operate with an electric motor and a diesel generator. The electric motor is primarily used to power the machine, while the diesel engine is utilised only when

recharging the batteries. By transitioning to hybrid booms, we are providing more power and lower fuel consumption than traditional diesel models. This ensures that our customers can benefit from increased productivity, extended work times, and reduced environmental impact.

We have also introduced electric-only rough terrain scissors that offer superior performance, traction, and stability compared to diesel-powered counterparts. Our electric scissors are equipped with a powerful motor that reduces the need for frequent maintenance and enables our customers to work efficiently without the noise and pollution that is typical of dieselpowered equipment. The electric-only

scissors are ideal for indoor and outdoor applications that require clean operation, quick setup, and high lift capacity.

Our transition to hybrid booms and electric-only rough terrain scissors allows us to offer our clients access equipment that provides superior performance, high manoeuvrability, and more significant energy cost-savings compared to dieselpowered equipment. Additionally, our new fleet will help reduce noise and air pollution on job sites, making them a more eco-friendly option.

At MPH, we are committed to providing our customers with equipment that is not only reliable but also more environmentally friendly. Our transition to hybrid booms and electric-only rough terrain scissors is a step towards a sustainable future, and we are proud to be taking this initiative. We believe the future of access equipment in the construction industry is electric and hybrid, and we will continue to invest in this technology to keep up with the changing needs of our customers.

CONCRETE EXPO 2-3 MAY 2023 –THE LONDON SHOW THAT’S FULL OF PLANT & EQUIPMENT

After its successful relocation to the capital in 2022, the UK’s most innovative show for the concrete industry returns to London’s ExCeL on 2-3 May 2023.

What has grown this year is the equipment on show. Concrete pumps, batching plant equipment (including a mobile batching unit in the Hall), volumetric mixer trucks (the largest on display at any UK event), specialist concrete tools and equipment, floor finishing equipment, hire equipment and accessories make a visit this year more relevant to the plant industry. Names such as Armcon, Bay-Lynx, Premier MBP, McCrory Engineering join Baron, Integrated Hydraulic Solutions and Mixamate (the all-in-one mobile

concrete pumping/mixing unit), the UK’s leading provider of mix-on-site Concrete / Screed from a single vehicle. Vimpex, who will exhibit at Concrete Expo for the first time, will be showcasing its Japanese-made Ogura brand tools with their ranges of hydraulic rebar cutters and rebar benders.

TruckMove is a modular, cloud-based platform that provides comprehensive control of the cost and quality of transporting concrete per volume. This innovative system enables effective monitoring of the entire fleet of concrete mixers, resulting in increased efficiency and reduced costs (up to 25%).

Lifting specialists Hoistech will be showing a range of Ganterud lifting hoists from Sweden, including the L203 Pro Robust, with a lifting capacity

of up to 20 tons, a radio-controlled unit that reduces installation time and increases safety. Gentex Corporation has partnered with Stanley Black & Decker in the United Kingdom and Europe to exclusively licence the DEWALT brand for use with their industrial respiratory products so customers can get the most advanced protection while operating plant. Siltbuster, returning to the show, provides an unrivalled range of solutions for the construction industry to deal with all aspects of concrete wash water management, sludge dewatering, silt and waterborne pollution prevention.

Co-located with Concrete Expo will be the UK’s largest springtime event for the built environment, UK Construction Week (UKCW), when it makes a welcome return to London’s ExCeL from 2 to 4 May 2023.

MAKE IT VISIBLE TASKFORCE TACKLES WELLBEING IN CONSTRUCTION

More than 150 people from across the construction industry have volunteered to help a national drive to stop suicide and improve the welfare and wellbeing of the workforce.

The Make It Visible initiative was officially launched earlier this year and has seen contractors, clients, professional bodies come together to try to tackle the industry’s poor record on mental health.

ONS data shows that people working in construction are three times more likely to take their own lives than those in other industries. Every working day two construction workers are lost to suicide in the UK and Ireland.

Coordinated by the heads of Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity and Mates In Mind, the initiative aims to set a deliverable and measurable plan of action for wellbeing that can reach the boots on the ground.

It is also designed to bring together the many different mental health schemes already in existence in construction to make a more coherent cross-company approach.

Among the issues the initiative will be prioritising are: drawing up an industrywide wellbeing code of practice, issuing industry-wide advice, supporting the on site wellbeing champions already in place and helping to develop people skills training for supervisors and managers.

Obtaining government funding for wellbeing training and initiatives and ensuring mental health provision forms part of procurement are also among its priority issues.

The 150 volunteers, part of the Make It Visible taskforce, will help develop the plans from their initial outlines.

Bill Hill, CEO of the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, said: “There are a lot of wellbeing strategies and there

is some fantastic best practice, but it can be very difficult getting the industry to work together.

“We have a moral responsibility to improve the welfare of our workforce and it’s great to see that with so many people on board the industry really does want to get behind this.

“We want to leave egos, brands and intellectual property aside so that we can work together and change this moment into a movement to make wellbeing support visible in sight, on every site!”

Members of the Make It Visible taskforce recently heard from Jon Davies, the chief executive officer of the Australian Constructors Association, which has already developed a draft Culture Standard – designed to improve welfare for construction workers in the country.

Davies, originally from Northumberland,

believes there are many similarities between the workplace cultures in the two country’s construction industries.

“Historically what we’ve been doing too much on is treating the symptoms. We’ve been picking up the pieces but not addressing the root cause,” he said.

“If we look at the commercial models we’ve had in Australia, very similar to the UK, they’ve driven historically very adversarial culture and that is impacting on our people.

“Reducing the long hours that our workers work and providing flexible work options so they can take the time off that they need will have a big impact on the workplace culture too.”

Davies added that he thinks “governments in both countries need to ensure that procurement mandates an improvement in construction culture”.

AWARDS 2023

As Plant Planet went to press, entries were coming in thick and fast for the Construction Plant-hire Association (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards 2023. Stars of the Future is a national awards scheme for apprentices and trainees in the construction plant industry, organised by the CPA, the leading trade association for the plant-hire sector in the UK. The CPA has over 1,800 members who supply some 85% of hired plant to the construction and allied industries.

The 2023 winners will be announced at a live awards ceremony at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley, near Coventry, on Thursday 6th July 2023. Stars of the Future winners will be in competition for a number of prizes, as well as national recognition. Previous prizes have included tool kits, iPads and all-expenses overseas trips to visit Bauma and a Liebherr crane manufacturing plant in Germany.

In recognition of the growth of the awards over the last 10 years, two new awards categories have been introduced this yearYoung Plant Operative of the Year and Apprentice Mentor of the Year. Awards will also be made for the well-established categories of Plant Mechanic of the Year (Level 2), Plant Technician of the Year (Level 3), Plant Operative of the Year, Plant Installer of the Year, Lifting Technician of the Year, Hire Controller of the Year, College of the Year, the Judges’ Special Award and the Best Personal Statement Award.

Kevin Minton, Chief Executive of the CPA said:

“Stars of the Future is firmly established as the leading event of the construction plant sector for recognising and rewarding the skills and calibre of the industry’s apprentices and trainees, and it offers a great opportunity for companies to nominate their outstanding

apprentices and trainees who they see as being the industry’s future leaders.

“The standard of entries gets higher every year and last year we received 72 nominations from across the industry. With around 900 apprentices across the six main plantbased occupations, we expect we will receive even more nominations this year, especially as we have introduced new supplementary categories such as ‘Apprentice Mentor of the Year’ which recognises individuals from the same employer of the apprentices and trainees who have played a significant part in assisting them during their learning journey,” Kevin added.

The national winners for Stars of the Future 2022 were Jack Howell of Marubeni-Komatsu and NSCG Stafford College (Plant Mechanic of the Year), Jack Chubb of Phoenix Hire & Sales and Bridgend College (Plant Technician of the Year), Eleanor MacMillan-Currie of WM Currie and Son (Plant Operative of the Year), Jake Hodgson of Wolffkran (Plant Installer of the Year), Yasmin Bell of Sunbelt Rentals (Hire Controller of the Year), Steve Lumb of Wolffkran (Lifting Technician of the Year), Tom Baxendell of Bachy Soletanche and Reaseheath College (Best Personal Statement) and Luke Cooper of Boels Rental and Reaseheath College (Judges’ Special Award).

The CPA Stars of the Future Awards 2023 will be held in association with event sponsors CRJ Services, Flannery Plant Hire, GAP Group, L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage and Sunbelt Rentals and award sponsors ACOP Group, Liebherr, M O’Brien Plant Hire, NOCN Group, Plant Planet, Southern Hoist Services, Tower Staff Construction and Wolffkran.

There are several powerful cranes which emerge from traditions dating back around 2,500 years ago, starting with the Greeks and the Romans. These cranes were able to carry up to 6,000 pounds when operated by eight men. Of course, they have evolved since then! Cranes, nowadays, can lift to 44 million pounds.

CRANE VESSELS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR OFFSHORE CONSTRUCTION OR MARINE ENGINEERING. These cranes can be used to construct offshore wind power, floating oil platforms and subsea developments. Though crane vessels resemble boats, they very rarely use monohull construction, implementing catamaran or semi-submersible approaches for increased stability. These cranes became popular during the 20th century due to the increased demand for offshore oil rigs. The biggest one is Heerema Marine Contractors, responsible for the SSCV Sleipnir, a semi-submersible crane vessel with the largest lifting capacity in the world of 20,000 tons in tandem.

THE STRONGEST MOBILE CRANE IN THE WORLD IS THE LIEBHERR LTM 11200-9.1

Mobile cranes are important on every construction site due to their portability and versatility. They are very easy to assemble and customise, and therefore beneficial in speeding up the construction process.

Mobile cranes can be used for small jobs, but some construction sites require more power in lifting. The Liebherr LTM 11200-9.1 is the perfect solution for heavy lifting with a capacity of 1,200 tons making it the world’s strongest mobile crane.

THE TALLEST TOWER CRANE IN THE WORLD IS THE KROLL K10000, 470 FEET, A GIGANTIC STRUCTURE THAT IS EVEN TALLER THAN THE STATUE OF LIBERTY. Tower cranes enable the construction of massive buildings, such as high skyscrapers, that would never be possible with a mobile crane. Some tower cranes are self-climbing, with the ability to construct their own tower as they rise along building up as they progress. Tower cranes are used mainly to construct buildings and are attached externally, or positioned in the middle of the building, helping to increase safety and of course, reach higher points.

THE SGC-250, THE SARENS GIANT CRANE, WHICH WAS FIRST BUILT IN THE UK, HAS AFFECTIONATELY BEEN NAMED ‘BIG CARL’ While most cranes are set-up for a specific job and then subsequently removed, other cranes are built for long-term purposes. These industrial super cranes are typically placed in ports where they are responsible for lifting unimaginable loads weighing millions of pounds. These cranes have become a tourist attraction for being so gigantic and majestic.

THE HEAVIEST LIFTED BY A CRANE WAS IN 2018 BY TAISUN

Taisun is the name of the world’s strongest crane which has a safe working load of 20,000 metric tons (22,046 short tons). Taisun was designed by DHHI (Dalian Huarui Heavy Industry). It is located at Yantai Raffles Shipyard in Yantai, Shandong Province, China. It is used to assemble semi-submersible vessels. The crane holds the three heaviest lifts of all time respectively: 20,133 metric tons, 17,100 tons and 14,000 tons. It can lift 20,133 tons which is equivalent to 8000 trucks. That’s quite a feat!

The amount of wire required to operate Taisun is nearly 50,000 meters or just over 31 miles, allowing it to lift a maximum of 80 meters.

Innovations from plant and equipment manufacturers, and the wider construction industry, are advancing at pace. Crane technology will also continue to evolve every year. The prediction is for the introduction of autonomous cranes, which could possibly reduce accidents by 50%.

100% Electric or Hybrid?

Manitou’s expanding Oxygen range has recently been extended with the introduction of two versatile rotating telescopic handlers with zero emissions and zero noise levels - the MRT2260e & MRT2660e.

A maximum lift capacity of 6 tons with a max lift height of 22 metres and 26 metres.

The machine is 100% electrically operated, with Lithium-ion batteries offering reduced maintenance, optimized recharging and a long service life.

The MRTe offers user commonality with the same features and functionality as experienced on a traditional diesel powered model, such as lift capacity, visibility, ergonomy, comfort, access, intuitive controls and overall performance; not to mention the vast array of attachments available.

The MRT range from Manitou is a market leader in many countries, each with different customer profiles, so designing an electric machine suitable for all was challenging. Each customer has different usage patterns and needs, so the MRTe has been developed with a modular power concept allowing the customer to choose one of three power configurations:

• Standard Single Battery of 65 kwh capacity - autonomy of up to 4 hrs

• Twin Battery of 2 x 65 kwh capacity - autonomy of up to 8 hrs

• Single Battery of 65 kwh, with a RANGE EXTENDER.autonomy of up to 4 hrs with zero emissions, or continuous autonomy in hybrid mode.

60 APRIL 2023 PLANT PLANET FEATURE MANITOU

The range extender is a self contained thermal engine unit with a STV 18.4kw Yanmar engine and 65l fuel tank, able to recharge the battery of the machine during use, providing continuous hybrid operation.

The modular concept allows retrofit of either the second battery or range extender module within 20-30 minutes, allowing the user/hirer to adapt the machine depending on the application or available recharge options.

Selectable ECO, STANDARD or BOOST operating modes balance autonomy vs performance depending on the application - great flexibility for 40kph roading or when recharge options are limited.

Recharging capabilities of up to 60 kw DC is available offering a recharge time of a single battery from 0-80% capacity in just 60 mins, or the 22kw on board charger in 135 mins.

Manitou is committed to reducing TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) with design considerations throughout the project including:

• Energy Regeneration System - when the accelerator pedal is released, energy is regenerated lowering consumption offering greater autonomy

• Real Data - All energy consumption information is visible in real time on the display giving full control

• Optimized Resale Value - High performance, durability and modular design will offer high resale values

• Low Maintenance Cost - Low maintenance Lithium-ion batteries with reduced hydraulic tank requirements reduce servicing costs

• LED Lights - Bright, long lasting with low energy consumption

Unchanged performance

All the advantages and versatility of an MRT in an electric version. Ideal for work with environmental constraints, night work, in urban areas, historical buildings, and many more.

Launch of the electric MT625e Telehandler

Manitou is also adding to its range of compact forklifts with the commercial launch of its first 100% electric compact telehandler. The former best selling MT 625 is now available as the ‘MT 625e’, with a capacity of 2.5 tons and a height of 6 metres, guarantees performance as good as the internal combustion version and is the same size with compact

dimensions of 1.8 metres in width and under 2 metres in height - meaning you can easily pass under thresholds and navigate congested areas. It remains the telescopic handler for all your material handling applications, even in the most demanding and difficult conditions!

Fitted with a 25 or 33 kWh lithium-ion battery, this model reduces maintenance by 56% and drastically reduces the total cost of ownership for the user. This technology has many advantages, such as low maintenance requirements and the possibility of opportunity charge (partial and frequent recharging of the battery). The useful capacity of a lithiumion battery and its lifetime are also among the best. Not to mention its climatic resistance and its efficiency close to 100%. Perfect for indoor or city center use or for renovating historic buildings, the MT 625e benefits like all the models in the compact telehandler range from the Safety Pack and the Harmony screen for safe and easy use.

OSS - Operation Safety System

The OSS is an option which can be added to the spec of the machine to accompany and protect the driver. The driver is informed in real time of manoeuvres that could expose them to a risk and also warns other on site personnel of the operator’s inappropriate behaviour. The information is then sent to the fleet manager, a simple and effective tool to ensure safety on site.

The Electrified Access Range

With three new platform models, Manitou is accelerating the rollout of its “Oxygen” low emissions range. The 200 ATJe roughterrain platform (working height of 20 metres) first launched back in 2020, is now available with four-wheel steer for greater maneuverability and a basket that can now take 250 kg of load, 30 kg more than on the two-wheel drive version.

The 160 ATJe and 180 ATJe have also been added to the Oxygen label. Work easily in the most harsh environments with 160 ATJe aerial work platform, equipped with an all-terrain chassis, reinforced structure and a fully galvanized basket, this powerful model is ideal for working safely on all types of soils. Comfort and safety is at Manitou’s heart, offering the operator exceptional performance of the 160 ATJe articulated boom and access to all the outdoor elements located at height.

Or equip yourself with the 180 ATJe, this model offers the operator all the benefits of the 160 ATJe with extra lift height stretching to 18 metres, allowing the operator to position themselves easily on all uneven surfaces. The compactness and off road capability allows even sandy, muddy or uneven ground to be worked at safely. The two models also see their capacity increased by 50 kg for a basket that can take a total weight of 250 kg.

There is also a second version named the 160 ATJ & e, with capacity significantly increased to 400 kg. A range extender solution is also presented in the form of a removable generator common to all the machines, allowing for a week of autonomy.

Lighting Pack

During night activities, the lighting pack has been designed to keep the operator and the machine safe by preventing collisions. Fitted with an 8 metre long lighting device and light sensor, this innovation ensures the utmost safety for platform loading and unloading operations with a number of lights positioned on the platform to see and be seen.

Reducing Your Total Cost Of Ownership (TCO)

The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is reduced with an almost 50% decrease in maintenance costs compared to the internal combustion version.

With multiple advantages, these machines have a carefully designed autonomy, thanks to their 80% recyclable lead battery. Their low voltage allows technical interventions without special certifications. They are light and can be easily transported. The zero-emission mode makes them suitable for all types of work sites, indoors and outdoors, and in urban areas at night.

Versatility and Performance

Manitou’s electric range performs well on all terrains, outdoors and indoors. And to adapt to the needs of each site, they can easily switch from hybrid to full electric mode. A more intuitive man-machine interface is directly accessible from the basket of the platform featuring an energy consumption indicator, remaining working time, and is offered as a connected solution to manage fleets efficiently in real time... simplify the use of your machine for all participants, operators and managers →

NEW CHAPTER FOR MAGNI TELESCOPIC HANDLERS

COMPANY PROFILE MAGNI PLANT PLANET 74 APRIL2023
PLANT PLANET MAGNI COMPANY PROFILE APRIL 2023 75

Magni Telescopic Handlers is an Italian manufacturer of rotating and fixed boom telescopic handlers.

Today, Magni stands tall as a major manufacturing group and an important market player. Its strength comes from the beginning, from the experience of its founders, from the dynamic nature of the Made in Italy district

that has provided the perfect terrain for the extraordinary growth and subsequent development.

Passion is the core ingredient at Magni Telescopic Handlers, and our passion is evident from our styling, creativity and quality throughout. Our production and design fix new standards for the lifting markets by creating more performing models in order to respond to our customers’ needs. We work closely with our key suppliers and partners to ensure the best solutions for our range of products. Our design concept is inspired by the experience of skilled employees, who have helped the Company achieve world recognition. →

MAGNI bring to the market three lines of products:

1. Rotating telehandlers for construction up to 51 metres working height: RTH Range

2. Fixed boom telehandlers for industry from 4.5 tonnes capacity: TH Range

3. Heavy Duty telehandlers for mining industry up to 50 tonnes capacity: HTH Range

For 2023, we are bringing to the market two new models to complete our range of TH products: TH 4,5.15 and TH 4,5.19. The TH range of telescopic handlers for construction and light industry is designed to ensure maximum performance in every situation.

Four wheel drive as standard guarantees maximum grip on any kind of ground. The hydrostatic transmission ensures optimal off-road performance. The new models combine a new chassis - to ensure maximum visibility - and easier access to the cab.

Both models will be available in two different engine configurations:

Deutz TCD 3.6 Stage V (with DPF) – 55 kW

• TH 4,5.15 & TH 4,5.19

Deutz TCD 3.6 Stage V (with DPF + AdBlue) – 74,4 kW

• TH 4,5.15 P & TH 4,5.19 P

The new models have a compact size that makes them ideal for working in tight spaces, guaranteeing maximum manoeuvrability in any location. The pivoting stabilisers stay

perfectly in shape when closed and do not affect its ground clearance, but when deployed they form a very compact stabilisation area, providing impressive lifting capacity and stability.

Both models are equipped with a levelling system on tyres of +/- 8°: This lets the driver adjust the machine levelling and have the full load chart for all operations, even with ground inclinations which would normally affect the lifting performance.

On its TH 4,5.15 P and TH 4,5.19 P models, Magni has also introduced an additional levelling safety device: if the operator tries to manually correct the inclination of the machine on uneven terrain, the system detects the machine inclination and only allows compensation to be performed in the correct direction, preventing any movement which could worsen the situation.

As already announced at Samoter Press Meeting we are also working on a RTH line extension. We have also extended the RTH range, inserting a few models to cater for different markets and specific applications.

We can therefore boast of having in our range both the highest rotating telescopic in the world and the highest performing one with a capacity of 13 tonnes. Orders for this new range will be available from mid-2023.

the cab:

The cab has been moved forward in relation to the turret to improve the visibility of the operator, being situated closer to the fork. We have also added a secondary access to the cab; on the opposite side of the chassis. The new cabin is equipped with an “easy access system” - a pending patent by Magni - which allows you to block the rotation of the machine so as to allow easier entry into the cabin.

The interior of the cabin has been completely redesigned, all the upholstery has been created with injection moulding to have extreme precision in the details and finishes.

When the door is opened, courtesy lights - positioned under the seat armrests and under the push-button panel - are immediately turned on. These lights are dimmable.

The overall visibility of the cab has been improved by increasing the glass surface. The cabin is equipped as standard with sun blinds to ensure operator comfort.

Windshield visibility has been improved by having the wiper motor located at the bottom and having always-open vents that guarantee constant airflow to defrost/demist or clear the windows. Again with a view to improving visibility, the steering column has been narrowed while maintaining all the

adjustment standards.

A practical pocket for objects has been inserted into the upholstery, located under the right armrest. A practical thermal cup holder has also been included, designed for operators who work long hours on the vehicle.

In the upper part of the cabin, two technical compartments have been inserted to contain most of the electrical control units, fuses and diagnostic sockets in order to simplify both extraordinary and ordinary maintenance of the vehicle.

In the rear part, behind the seat, the remote control has been housed in a dedicated case to protect it from dirt, wear and accidents.

The seat has also been renewed with the addition of two armrests with courtesy lights included. Ergonomics and operator comfort are prerogatives of Magni machines. The seat and adjustable steering column are designed to ensure an optimal driving position.

The full-visibility cab is designed to guarantee a 360° view during every movement. The many standard features of the cab (such as air filtration and pressurization) ensure operator comfort in any season and location.

software:

Throughout the RTH range, we have added as standard a rear camera to control the area of rear manoeuvre. Pictures were then integrated into the Touch Screen present on the vehicle. This possibility is available as an option in both the TH and HTH ranges. Two 12 or 7 inch displays will be available depending on the model selected.

The software has been standardised for the whole range, with a view to improving the diagnostics and speeding up both the control and updating operations.

The thematically organised display and iconographic graphics make it easier to learn the basic functions, making the system user-friendly.

The load charts screen is available in three versions:

• the standard display - as per the display for existing models

• the dynamic, real time display enabling you to see only the area in which you can move with the load safely

• the dynamic view from above

Perfectly ergonomic, the left joystick is available in three variants to meet every need of the operator.

The right joystick is differentiated for the RTH /HTH and TH, with two variants for the complete customisation of movements.

The dashboard has been adapted and unified for all Magni ranges and a subnet to the CAN BUS has also been created to manage the analogic buttons on the on-board console. The function management software is easy and intuitive and suitable for all types of users.

TOM GLEESON: PROUD TO BE IN PLANT

RACHEL LAMBERT INTERVIEWS TOM GLEESON, PLANT DIRECTOR AT CLANCY PLANT

Tom Gleeson joined Clancy Plant in March 2021 as Plant Director, a role he says “is so fulfilling and enjoyable” working in a “wonderful industry with some great people”. Tom’s name will be familiar to many in the industry having worked in it for over 30 years. Having grown up in the small seaside town of Youghal in County Cork, it was agriculture that dominated his younger years. Tom’s father was an agricultural mechanic, and he fondly remembers spending a lot of time with him, taking a keen interest in equipment from those early years. But it was a visit to London at the age of 18 that was to change Tom’s life.

“I originally planned to be in London for my summer holidays but ended up staying. Dad passed away when I was 19 and there wasn’t quite the same draw to go back to Cork after that,” reflects Tom, who goes on to explain that his father was only 50 when he passed.

Tom’s first “office job” was with a company called C J Pearce in 1989, at the time when Canary Wharf was being developed. He then progressed to Balfour Beatty as a Junior Office Manager where he settled for the next few years. His first foray in “procurement” was when the Jubilee Line extension was underway. This involvement with buying for the Jubilee Line construction project was significant to Tom. It took him on a path to Mowlem where he started as a Senior Buyer for Civil Engineering. That was in 1997.

“It was a wonderful business, and we had a fabulous team,” smiles Tom. “The Civil Engineering division, at that time, turned over in the region of £500 million giving our team in Bracknell significant spending power for a wide range of materials, services, plant and equipment. We were involved in some incredible projects at Mowlem, from construction of the A2/M2 crossing to the Channel Tunnel Rail Link at St Pancras, the Lewisham extension and part of the M25.” →

82 APRIL 2023 PLANT PLANET INTERVIEW cLANCY PLANT
APRIL 2023 83 PLANT PLANET CLANCY PLANT INTERVIEW

Mowlem also worked on the construction of Dublin Port Tunnel, which took Tom back to his Irish roots for a year, as part of the Major Projects Civils Team.

“Strangely enough, I have only ever had one year in my career working in Ireland. It was great fun out there but after I’d finished my 12-month stint in Dublin for Mowlem, I was ready to come back to Head Office in the UK. I really do consider the UK to be home.”

During his 10 years at Mowlem, Tom was promoted and ultimately landed the role of Procurement Manager, leading the procurement team in Bracknell. He still keeps in touch with his ex-colleagues, who he sees socially. Mowlem was bought by Carillion in 2006.

‘Home’ for Tom is a village in Wiltshire on Salisbury Plain which he “absolutely loves”. Tom met his wife, Sophie, during his time in London, and they married in 1996 before moving to Wiltshire 19 years ago.

Not long after Carillion acquired Mowlem, Tom thought the time was right to make a change. In 2007, he was verbally offered a position at Costain, but fate intervened, and Tom took a different course during a dinner with

Steve Corcoran, then Chief Executive of Speedy Hire.

“It was a bizarre turn of events. The offer letter from Costain got delayed in the post and in some ways, I think it was fate. I was out to dinner with Steve (Corcoran) who I’d known for a long time, and I mentioned that I was going to leave Carillion to join Costain. He asked if I had signed a contract (I hadn’t) and then suggested I came to work for Speedy, giving me the option of three different roles to ‘choose’ from. The letter from Costain didn’t turn up for 10 days because it didn’t have any postage on! I’d been mulling this over during this time, and decided to join Speedy.”

Tom took on the role of Business Improvement Director for Speedy’s Accommodation business because Steve wanted a “fresh pair of eyes” on the business to improve its performance and ratify its strategic position.

“It became clear this wasn’t a core area for Speedy. At the time, Elliott UK was in ascendency, so the decision was made to sell Speedy’s Accommodation business to them.”

“Around 2009, Steve asked me to set-up the Partnered Services side of the Speedy business. He realised that

there were inconsistencies in service levels across the depots, and wanted me to establish a centralised team to take control. The aim was to ultimately offer a consistent service to customers, which we successfully achieved. We negotiated contracts with suppliers and we took that part of the Speedy business from 8 million to 23 million in three years.”

And then came the advent of One Call, which merged with Fork Rent to become Ardent Hire Solutions as it is known today. Tom, in 2013, joined One Call Hire Ltd as Commercial & Sales Director. He had been brought in to try and “polish some of the edges” to implement change, especially to improve how the business presented itself to customers. Tom ran the sales and commercial function, and also took the procurement element under his wing. He introduced changes so they could report better, and constructively attain client data.

“One Call was a successful business and they quite rightly identified that some things could be done better. I was concentrating on this, when Steve Corcoran popped up again and told me about his plans with PE backing to buy the business, together with Fork Rent, with a vision to merge both companies.

“He asked me to form part of the management buy-in team. So, I became Commercial Director when we acquired that business. Then, of course, under Steve’s leadership the two businesses were merged to become Ardent Hire Solutions Ltd, and I transitioned with it, to become Commercial Director for that company in August 2015.”

Along the way, Tom started to realise that it didn’t have the same ‘family feel’ that he desired, and after three years, decided to step away from Ardent.

Unsure of what he wanted to do next, and not seeing any jobs that truly interested him, Tom took the decision to start his own venture. So, he set-up Capel Machinery (named after a small island off the coast of Youghal Bay) and started buying and selling equipment.

At the time, SANY was trying to get a foothold in the UK market, which was timely for Tom, in securing the dealership for the Gloucester, Wiltshire and Oxford areas.

“I was happy being involved in Capel Machinery. It suited me at the time and we developed a successful platform. But, then after 2 years, the Plant Director position opportunity at Clancy came my way, which was not only an exciting prospect but also a real privilege. I knew it would be such a great role, so I made the decision to step away from the dayto-day running of the Capel business and accept the Clancy offer.” Tom’s wife, Sophie, has remained with Capel and Eamonn McGurk of McGurk Group has an active shareholding. “I joined Clancy Plant in March 2021 and I haven’t looked back.”

Two years on, and Tom is sitting behind his desk in his office at Clancy’s Clare House headquarters in Harefield with a contented aura about him that feels ‘very at home’. He agrees and is full of praise for the Clancy family and the business they have so successfully grown to what it is today.

“Clancy is a great family business, and I’m a real family man, so from day one, there was an instant connection and a shared set of values. My eldest son has joined the business as well and is on

track to becoming a fully qualified accountant. We have fathers and daughters working here, sisters, brothers, partners and cousins! It is a real testament to the business that they embrace, and enjoy people coming here and working with their families. Clancy management is now on the third generation of Clancy family members, and this ‘family ethos’ flows throughout the Group, to create a tight unit.”

We talk briefly about the Clancy Foundation, which is very proactive within the industry, and in supporting local causes and community projects. Tom feels this “adds to that family and community spirit”. Clancy’s Golf Day last year raised around £30,000 for the Lighthouse Club, for which they are huge supporters. They also took part in the Plant Hire Aid Alliance for Ukraine as part of a convoy to Slovakia.

Clancy is one of the largest privately owned construction businesses in the UK. With a long a successful heritage, it was originally founded in 1958 by Michael Clancy as M.J. Clancy & Sons Limited operating from premises in Wembley. The original business started in civil engineering work and has grown to become a leading partner in utilities, delivering water, wastewater, energy and telecoms work across the UK, as well as endto-end traffic management solutions. Clancy’s capabilities are vast, from fixing water leaks to cross country pipelines, as well as all manner of construction projects from substation builds to enabling works on HS2.

The Clancy Group has just won a multi-million-pound contract with Gigaclear to deliver a fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) network upgrade to approximately 7,000 properties across Surrey. It’s Clancy’s first major contract award in the telecoms sector.

“The telecoms division is new, so we are investing in a range of different equipment, such as poling rigs mounted on a lorry chassis, with an augur and crane for handling telegraph poles. We also have 4x4 mobile elevated work platforms which we have a lot of experience in through our power contracts.”

86 APRIL 2023 PLANT PLANET INTERVIEW cLANCY PLANT
“CLANCY IS A GREAT FAMILY BUSINESS AND I’M A REAL FAMILY MAN, SO FROM DAY ONE, THERE WAS AN INSTANT CONNECTION AND A SHARED SET OF VALUES”

Clancy has an impressive client portfolio, partnering on important contracts for the most prominent names that include Scottish Water, Anglian Water, Southern Water, SE Water, SES Water, Thames Water, Northern Powergrid, UK Power Networks, HS2 (for utilities diversion and other projects). These are just some names from a long list. So, what about the Plant side of the business for which Tom has responsibility? Tom describes it as “a very busy place”. Clancy Plant was formed in 1962 “with the sole purpose to provide all plant and transport requirements to the Clancy Group.” It’s not hard to see why Tom says this division of Clancy is so busy.

Today, Clancy Group directly employs over 2100 people across 4 regional hubs and operational units delivering utilities and civils projects and maintenance. Kevin Clancy is Chairman and his nephews, Matt Cannon is CEO, while Ronan Clancy (Dermot Clancy’s son) is also an Executive Director. Sadly, Dermot passed away in a tragic accident in 2019.

“It is great that Clancy still have a strong passion to continue owning and operating our own plant and transport. We have 2500 vehicles and 10,000 items of plant, including a range of specialist equipment, such as suction excavators, pipe welding, cable detection and associated tooling.”

In relation to buying equipment, Tom is quick to stress how committed Clancy is to supporting projects pointing out that the company ethos is, “if we’re going into a sector, we’ll go in seriously.”

“There is continuous investment in Capex here, and our meetings are really straightforward, with a small committee making decisions quickly. Our clients understand this, and they like the relationships we have got with suppliers, and people in the industry in general. So, we continue to buy. We encourage our people to bring clients to Clancy Plant to show them around, so they can meet the team, look at what we do and the volume of work we conduct, and the value we bring to projects.”

Expanding on what he means by ‘value’, Tom continues: “The value isn’t necessarily about having a piece of steel that can do the job. It can go beyond that. We show customers how innovative we are, and how we can modify equipment to suit the contract’s particular requirements. We get a lot of repeat business because we focus on making the client experience an excellent one.”

Tom goes on to explain that there are challenges too, faced by the wider industry, especially around sustainability.

“Sustainability is high on our agenda. We aspire to move faster towards electric, and we run EVs and continue to trial electric vans, but the infrastructure just isn’t there yet for mass rollout. One of the challenges is that the vans are often taken home overnight, and regularly operate fully laden. So EV charging is an issue. We launched our electric car policy last year, and we’ve got more lined up to enter the fleet. “

Tom expands further. He says that Clancy Plant is also trialling eco-welfare units, and they have already invested in solar pods, to generate power to offices. They also have some battery powered excavators but again, fast and efficient charging remains an obstacle, with cold weather impacting battery life.

“The problem is also battery weight. Even the battery handheld tools, such as road breakers and saws, have heavy batteries which make handling them more difficult. I think technology needs to try and outpace where we are now because now, I don’t think it’s even keeping up.”

He adds: “I don’t believe that electric is the solution for large excavators in its current format. They have a duty cycle of 8 hours, but our duty cycle is longer than that. When you factor in charging time too of perhaps 12 to 14 hours, and the cost of the machine, which is often around 4 times as much as its conventional counterpart, then it doesn’t add up. We need manufacturers to give us more solutions that are scalable and allow us to repower quickly.”

“I was impressed at what JCB are doing with the hydrogen engine, but there is still an infrastructure challenge, around where to store, transport and get clean hydrogen.”

He also says that, while moving to electric is high on the agenda, that it’s also about smarter and safer ways of working.

“We have got a large fleet of vacuum excavators. For us as a contractor, one of the major risks is striking cables or other services when digging holes. The vacuum excavators remove that risk, so they present a different and safer way of working.”

APRIL 2023 87 PLANT PLANET CLANCY PLANT INTERVIEW
TODAY, CLANCY GROUP DIRECTLY EMPLOYS OVER 2,100 PEOPLE ACROSS 4 REGIONAL HUBS AND OPERATIONAL UNITS DELIVERING UTILITIES AND CIVILS PROJECTS AND MAINTENANCE

Another area of the business that is being closely evaluated by Clancy Group, is the use of the data. Tom explains further.

“There’s a lot of data available from telematics, manufacturers engine management and mileage, and so on. We are engaged in a project that will help us use data metrics far better, not only in managing and maintaining vehicles, but also from a sustainability perspective. With 2500 vehicles, our fuel bill is enormous! So, we are talking about changing behaviours, such as idling times, route planning and so on, and to capture data that can ultimately help us to become more efficient. It will have a big impact on fuel consumption.”

Beyond plant and equipment, there are of course, people. Tom also says that customers like Clancy’s ‘direct employ’ model. The company takes a 70:30 approach with the majority of people directly employed, which Tom says, “works very well”.

But another key challenge is attracting younger people into the industry, and more importantly, retaining them. This is a problem that is endemic throughout the construction sector, not just plant rental, and one the entire industry is having to address.

“It’s such a shame because it is a very enjoyable industry to be part of. I’ve been in this industry for over 30 years, and it is a great sector to work in, with some excellent opportunities for career progression. For the right people, there are some amazing opportunities at Clancy, including apprenticeships, with much to offer all types of career paths for the future. We have a stable team, and we want young people to stay with us.”

And talking to Tom, his love of the industry, and for the job he does, is very apparent. He laughs when he says that his ‘work persona’ can be quite different to the family man he is at home. “I have a reputation in the industry for being ‘difficult’ at times, but away from it all, I’m just a family guy!”

Married to Sophie, with three sons, he says: “I love my family; we have had a full house with the boys and at times their girlfriends, and it’s great. I enjoy cooking (some may have seen Tom’s famous pizza oven!) entertaining friends and listening to music. And I adore walking in the beautiful Wiltshire countryside.”

Tom is also keen on horseracing and tells me for a while he ‘owned a piece of a horse’, saying that “it is always a great day out.” The Gleeson family aptly

live in a horseracing village in the same vicinity as trainer, Richard Hannon. And when time permits, Tom also enjoys his motorbike and playing golf. He and Sophie are very keen on travelling, fondly saying how they “enjoy each other’s company”.

As we round-up our interview, I am struck by Tom’s warm and caring side, and above all the genuine pleasure he gets from “working in plant” and especially “working at Clancy”.

Increasingly for manufacturers, emissions are at the top of the agenda. Many are streamlining their products to feature models with more fuel-efficient engines that emit fewer pollutants.

After unveiling their range of electrified telehandlers at Bauma 2022, Manitou have gone worldwide and recently expanded the distribution of their latest additions to their “Oxygen” line of low emissions equipment to North America. The MRT 2260e and MRT 2660e VISION+ rotating telehandlers, and the MT 625e compact electric fixed telehandler seek to deliver the same reliable service of their previous models, but with less

noise and emissions – rather aptly, the headline of Manitou’s electrification campaign is “reduce your emissions, raise your standards”.

Steve Kiskunas, Product Manager for Telescopic Handlers at Manitou, shared: “We’ve retained the performance and specs of the diesel models while reducing emissions, lowering noise on the jobsite, and making lifetime owning and operating costs significantly less.”

On the subject of the broader move towards electrification, Kiskunas believes that there are multiple ways for consumers to benefit: “Telehandlers are perfectly suited for electrification due to their varied use throughout the day, their ability to charge relatively fast, and the importance of less noise impacting verbal communication in many material handling applications… the elimination of service and support operations and costs around the diesel engines will have significant lifetime cost savings.”

FEWER EMISSIONS, THE SAME POWER WE’VE COME TO EXPECT DIGITAL INSIGHTS INTO YOUR MACHINES

Streamlining processes for fleet managers is a growing priority. Being able to manage your fleet digitally means greater visibility, easier troubleshooting, and readily available insights into machine health. All of this leads to time saving, and ultimately, increased productivity.

One such tool is Niftylink from Niftylift, the manufacturer of mobile elevating work platforms. Offering advanced telematics from over 70 parameters of machine data, Niftylink gives operators and managers the highest level of insights. Ranging from machine usage, performance, and lifecycle, the two digital platforms highlight why digital advancements mean we can get more out of our machines than ever before.

Niftylink Manager is described as the “command and control centre for your entire fleet”. Made with fleet managers in mind, it sends instant alerts when machines are in need of attention, and

allows for the tracking of real-time locations. It simplifies reporting, billing, and the scheduling of services online.

True to its name, Niftylink Go is a mobile app that allows users to access information on the go. It has been created to assist Service Technicians with diagnosing machine faults, detailing important information on the fault and suggesting how to resolve the problem. It works to reduce the number of callouts, and increase machine uptime.

The two Niftylink platforms work in tandem to pre-empt and address any problems that may arise when it comes to the management of high-reach equipment. Increasingly, these kind of platforms come as standard in the latest generation of high-reach equipment across most leading manufacturers. They can also often be retrofitted to machinery, meaning that the life cycle of existing older equipment can be extended.

High-reach equipment comes in all shapes and sizes, as evidenced by Xtreme Manufacturing and Snorkel, who have just debuted a new lineup of such equipment at CONEXPO in March 2023. Alongside more compact, electric machines, such as Snorkel’s S3013 Mini (with a working height of 19 feet), the S3219 Plus (with a medium height of 25 feet), and the S3220 Mini (standing at maximum of 26 feet), the manufacturers also wanted to showcase something bigger.

At the event, Xtreme Manufacturing unveiled its new

XR50100-G tracked telehandler, nicknamed by the company as “Trackzilla”, due to its powerful nature. Made for substantial jobs, the XR50100-G boasts a record-breaking maximum lift height of 100 feet and forward reach of 75 feet, as well as a lifting capacity of 50,000 pounds.

Will the trends of the next few years lead to even more electrification, or will we see more super-sized equipment take centre stage? Only time will tell.

Winget, manufacturers of construction equipment since 1908, have recently launched a new productthe Winget 100Te 110Volt Electric Mixer, which has received positive feedback from customers in and around London. According to Oscar Nesbit, the Plant Manager of GR8 Hire, the mixer’s superior build quality and reliability is evident from the fact that the first unit has remained out on hire for an extended period “the true test of how good a bit of equipment is, how often we see it” says Oscar.

Apart from its durability, the electric mixer also offers several eco-friendly features that make it a popular choice among hirers and buyers. The mixer’s quieter operation, no need for refuelling, and lower maintenance costs makes it a sustainable option for construction companies, particularly in Ultra Low Emission Zones and residential areas where noise limits are in place.

Allan Tregear, at The Hireman, praised the mixer’s manoeuvrability, saying, “They’re also an ideal length to fit on our

3.5T Tail-Lift vans,” which is crucial in ensuring the safe delivery of the product to the customer.

The mixer’s popularity is evident from Mr. Plant Hire’s decision to recently add the Winget 100Te to their fleet. This addition is an excellent indication that the mixer is gaining traction across London, and it will be interesting to see how the UK market responds to it.

TWO BRAND-NEW BATTERIES TO BE LAUNCHED FOR THE AWP MARKET

AMidlands-based subsidiary of battery manufacturer Leoch Battery, has launched two new batteries designed to fulfil the demand for use in the AWP sector.

Leoch Battery UK, which is based in Market Harborough, has added two new lead acid batteries which are extending the DT range that has already proved to be very popular with the industrial market, most of all for use in aerial work platforms.

The two 6V batteries, DT-L16 420ah and DT-J305 330ah, have been created to offer this well-renowned series to a wider variety of machinery.

Chris North, Motive Power Division Sales Manager for Leoch Battery UK, said: “It was clear to us that there was a gap in the market for long-lasting, reliable batteries in the accessibility sector, so we began working on the designs for these two products.

“Whether you’re powering a scissor lift, cherry picker or boom, with the application being a major construction project or maintenance of industrial facilities, the requirements from a battery are very similar. Long life, ease of change and deep cycling are all imperative. They must be reliable and efficient.

“We’re delighted to launch these batteries and look forward to being able to help even more clients with their needs for batteries in the AWP sector.”

The two new products will be showcased at the industry’s Vertikal Days event being held in May. Leoch Battery UK has exhibited their products and industry knowledge at the event for the last two years.

Leoch Battery International boasts 10 manufacturing plants across the globe and operates in the Network Power, Motive Power and Transportation markets. Their

operations are backed by a total of 100 collective years of staff experience in the battery industry, supplying products for an impressive host of applications and markets, in both industrial and lifestyle categories.

ASSET FINANCE –ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW!

So, what is Asset

finance?

Very simply, it’s a type of financing that enables businesses to acquire a range of assets, from excavators and dumpers to forklifts and tractors. There are several types of asset finance, including:

1. Hire Purchase: Hire Purchase is a type of asset finance where the borrower agrees to pay for the asset in instalments over a specified period. During the hire purchase agreement, the borrower is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the asset. At the end of the term, the borrower has the option of purchasing the asset outright.

2. Refinancing (Capital Release): Refinancing is a quick way to access the cash from assets on an existing balance sheet and use that value elsewhere within a business – for example, to fund a deposit on new equipment or ease cash flow.

3. Sale and HP Back: Sales and HP Back is a form of refinance that can be used against most types of equipment, making it suitable for companies of all sizes, including sole traders. It works by the lender purchasing the asset and financing it back to the borrower. Repayments are calculated in line with the income stream that will be generated by the asset and at the end of the refinance term, the borrower owns the asset.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:

If you have a specific question to ask of Leoch’s knowledgeable staff, call 01858 433 330

4. Finance Lease: Finance Lease lets the borrower use the equipment without having to buy it outright. Rent is paid for the full use of the asset and the rental period is flexible and can be tailored. During this period, the borrower pays the full cost of the asset, including interest and when the end of the primary lease term is reached, the borrower can choose to continue to use the asset by entering a secondary rental period; sell the asset and keep a portion of the income from the sale, or return it to the lender

5. Operating Lease: Operating lease is a type of asset finance where the borrower rents the asset for a short period. At the end of the lease term, the borrower can choose to either return the asset or continue leasing it.

WASTE SECTOR EDITORIAL

The waste and recycling sector is a critical part of our economy and plays a crucial role in ensuring a sustainably led future. However, it is also a sector that is fraught with danger and risks. From hazardous waste to workplace accidents, the waste and recycling sector presents a significant challenge for workers and businesses when it comes to safety.

As with any large-scale waste operation, the use of heavy plant machinery and vehicles alongside operatives and ground workers, will always present a safety risk. No site, even with the highest health and safety standards and best practices is 100% free from danger. In fact, between 2017 and 2021, the waste and recycling industry had the highest rate of fatal injuries per year – with 70% of all fatalities linked to workers being struck by vehicles or through contact with moving machinery.

In a report from the HSE in 2022, they highlighted the increased dangers associated with the waste and recycling sector - between 2017/18 and 2020/21, the waste sector recorded an average of five fatal injuries per year, representing 4.58 fatal injuries per 100,000 workers, and between 20152021 there was an estimated 3,000 workers each year who sustained an injury at work.

The HSE outlined: “The waste and recycling sector has an elevated rate of fatal injury [between 2017/18 and 2020/21]. The fatal injury rate (4.61 per 100,000 workers) is around 11 times higher than all industry rate.”

The most common cause of injury or fatality was a worker being struck by a moving vehicle with 37% of all confirmed fatalities. Second was contact with moving machinery at 33%.

Although existing control methods such as physical barriers, warning signs and correct health and safety training for workers are already in place, they are never 100% effective due to human error, on-site distractions, and other mitigating circumstances.

So, what can be done to increase the control measures already in place to help make the industry even safer and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities?

One way to increase your safety measures is to implement a plant proximity solution. A proximity solution provides dynamic virtual barriers intended to warn workers and plant operators of any incursion into defined safety exclusion zones, and help avoid worker/vehicle/machinery related deaths and injuries.

One of the best on the market is the Zonr Plant Proximity Solution. Zonr creates virtual safety exclusion zones that warn your workers when they’re getting too close to dangerous or moving equipment. The Zonr system creates a virtual barrier around anything you attach a sensor to, using UWB technology (the same technology found in an Apple Tag). This allows workers and plant operators to have an extra layer of safety protection while on site.
