Letter From leadership By everyone’s standards, 2020 was a tough year. I’m proud of how our team pushed through the personal and professional impacts of the pandemic, connecting with each other in our supportive weekly Zooms, conversing about client projects one minute and offering home schooling tactics the next. We prioritized each other’s mental health and well-being throughout the year, taking time off when needed to catch our breath. We are thankful for our deeply passionate clients, who, despite the challenges and curveballs of the past year, remained steadfast in their commitment to advancing positive social and environmental impact in their workplaces and in the world at large. There were some real victories in 2020 that are celebrated in this annual report—noteworthy and inspiring achievements that we hope you enjoy learning about as much as we enjoyed working on. Our experience spans the outdoor, sports, pet, beauty and wellness industries, nonprofit organizations, cultural institutions and municipalities. We have an extensive network and expertise related to ocean conservation, climate and energy, environmental health, plastic pollution and single-use plastics policy, alternatives and reduction initiatives. Our clients’ awardwinning sustainability and purpose-driven initiatives reduce their environmental impact and increase employee engagement, consumer loyalty, industry leadership and recognition.

Notable 2020 Achievements We are so grateful to our dedicated clients who kept up the momentum on their sustainability initiatives throughout 2020 despite the challenges presented by the pandemic. Below we highlight some of the amazing work we have accomplished through our partnerships in the past year.

7 /­/ NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENTS


PPS provided strategy and design support for Catalent’s first annual Green Team summit, which was held virtually in January 2021. Catalent, a global leader in providing integrated services, drug delivery technologies and manufacturing solutions to help life science innovators develop and launch successful pharmaceuticals, biologics and consumer health products, desired to build rapport among and between their many Green Teams to inspire greater participation and leverage shared knowledge. Our team worked closely with the Catalent Sustainability Team to develop engaging content and creative activities, perform pre- and post-summit information collection and provided suggestions for maintaining Green Team momentum and continued collaboration.

Costa Sunglass’ Kick Plastic initiative started in 2015 as a way for the brand to draw attention to the growing issue of plastic pollution in our oceans and waterways. Costa committed to reducing the amount of single-use plastic in its office, operations and at events, and encouraged the Costa community to do the same. Since 2015, Planet+Purpose Solutions has managed the Kick Plastic initiative, which includes programs like the Kick Plastic Guide and Outfiiter Program and Kick Plastic Eyecare Ambassador Program. PPS helped support the Costa Conservation Village at the Miami International Boat Show (MIBS), a massive annual boating event in Miami that has more than 100,000 attendees. PPS helped Costa expand its 2020 Kick Plastic partnership with MIBS by installing additional hydration stations and providing reusable Costa Kick Plastic drinkware around the venue, eliminating more than 8,000 single-use plastic water bottles from the event. In an effort to reduce Costa’s climate impacts, PPS started to measure the company’s carbon footprint for travel to key events in 2020. Costa then purchased carbon offsets equaling its travel footprint from The Ocean Foundation’s Blue Resilience Initiative, which restores, conserves and funds natural coastal infrastructure. We look forward to continuing to support Costa as it addresses its climate impact on a greater scale moving forward through initiatives like these.

Collectively, we have engaged over 1500 businesses , eliminated three million single-use plastic water bottles and recycled six tons of plastic lenses since the programs launched. 9 /­/ COSTA


Innersense Organic Beauty brought our team onboard in 2019 to provide strategic guidance on packaging, sustainable certifications, and cause partnership support. Innersense’s dedication to leading through authentic action in the clean beauty industry is truly inspiring, and 2020 was full of sustainability milestones for the company. After much research and testing, they transitioned over 80% of their bottles to 100% post-consumer recycled HDPE in 2020. By purchasing PCR bottles, the brand is helping to increase the demand for recycled plastic, which will have ripple effects towards improving the domestic recycling process. In addition, Innersense became a 1% for the Planet member and partnered with Plastic Bank to not only clean up an amount of plastic equal to their historical plastic footprint for the last 5 years but also offset 150% of their 2020 plastic footprint, making them plastic negative. It is a pleasure to work with such a committed brand on these incredibly impactful initiatives!

PPS has supported Nuun Hydration’s sustainability initiative, Clean Planet, since January 2019, offering strategic guidance on packaging, cause partners, corporate culture building and sustainable events. Most notably for 2020, PPS helped Nuun achieve Climate Neutral certification for 2019. In addition, our team supports Nuun’s efforts to help its suppliers to reduce their carbon footprint through "trickle down sustainability" practices. As a natural extension of its Clean Planet initiative, PPS facilitated the creation of a partnership between Nuun and the Council for Responsible Sport to educate and inspire endurance race events across the United States to reduce their environmental impacts. Our team also provides guidance on and manages select industry affiliations, environmentally focused certifications and retailer sustainability guidelines.

Our team has had the pleasure of working with Shedd Aquarium since 2018. We supported their business operations team and single-use plastic reduction efforts through our work with the Aquarium Conservation Partnership, collaborated on policy over the years, and assessed their single-use plastic footprint through a detailed waste audit. Most recently we've been working alongside their Conservation Team to provide strategic guidance related to the aquarium's restaurant collaborator program, Let's Shedd Plastic. From program design to digital resources to developing educational tools for participants, our team is supporting Shedd's efforts to inspire the Chicago area restaurant community to move away from single-use, disposable food serviceware to more sustainable alternatives.

PPS 2020 Environmental Impacts + Reduction Goals PPS became certified Climate Neutral in 2020. We are one of 300 organizations from around the world that have achieved this prestigious designation, which requires companies to not only measure and offset their carbon footprint through the purchase of verified carbon credits but also holds organizations accountable for future emissions reductions. Like all Climate Neutral certified brands, we are implementing a Reduction Action Plan to reduce carbon emissions from our operations.

cause partners The PPS team volunteers in our communities and serves on boards of numerous philanthropic organizations. Our team works closely with Charleston Waterkeeper, the South Carolina Aquarium, the College of Charleston, Porter-Gaud School and other environmental and educational nonprofit organizations. We also actively participate within the community to promote policy action around single-use plastics and other environmental sustainability initiatives. As a business member of 1% for the Planet, PPS also donates 1% of gross sales to our non-profit partners.

Through both our consulting initiatives and personal lifestyle choices, PPS works to increase the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix and support policy action to increase access to clean energy.

Through our work with companies, and as engaged citizens in the City of Charleston, we advocate for the need to upgrade infrastructure and support the goal of retrofitting industries to make them sustainable, with increased resource-use efficiency and greater adoption of clean and environmentally sound technologies and industrial processes.

Our work to reduce both our own and our clients’ carbon footprint, along with our volunteerism with the City of Charleston’s Climate Action Plan, supports the opportunity to substantially increase the number of cities and human settlements adopting and implementing integrated policies and plans towards inclusion, resource efficiency, mitigation and adaptation to climate change and improve resilience to disasters.

Our work with clients is centered around reducing their environmental impacts, whether it be reducing reliance on virgin fossil-fuels by lightweighting packaging, choosing sustainable materials and using post-consumer recycled content or through waste reduction initiatives. We work to educate our clients and their key stakeholders on how to minimize their ecological footprint and design and manage circular programs to ensure a sustainable future for all.


As a Climate Neutral certified brand, PPS not only offsets its carbon footprint through the purchase of verified offsets but also sets measurable targets to achieve emissions reductions going forward. We are proud to work with clients who have also achieved Climate Neutral certification and who work to reduce their climate impacts through offsets and more sustainable business practices. We have expertise in ocean plastic pollution and have, since our inception, worked to stem the tide of single-use plastic flowing into our oceans, lakes and rivers. Our multi-faceted approach to addressing the issue includes educational outreach, designing and implementing B2B and B2C engagement campaigns, conducting waste audits, and advocating for policy change at the federal, state and local level. PPS encourages our clients to adopt sustainable business practices that reduce their impacts on our planet’s finite resources, including those related to loss of biodiversity and ecosystem degradation. We prioritize the use of renewable resources and high recycled content for products and packaging and organic and regenerative agricultural practices for ingredient sourcing.

The solutions needed to address the gravest threats to our planet and humanity are complex and require collaborative, multi-stakeholder partnerships at the local, national and international level. We work with our clients to take an active role within industry groups and work with NGOs and other organizations to share knowledge, financial resources and technologies that will help the collective whole make meaningful progress on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
