Nous éditons à ce jour deux objets au design intemporel : • la lampe Gras créée par BernardAlbin Gras, équilibrée, intelligente, élégante et transparente : une icône du luminaire. • la chaise Surpil dessinée et conçue par Julien-Henri Porché, confortable, légère, chic et discrète, à l’aise à l’intérieur comme à l’extérieur : un vrai objet. Asseyez-vous et regardez.
It is our passion for objects that led us to create DCW. Objects : companions to our daily existence that are reliable, honest, carefully through and perfectly crafted. Objects : perfect of their kind, but also beautiful and generous. Objects : that we treat with respect, but wich we grow attached over time. Objects : a way of living, a way of seeing. We now have two objects that we wish to share and bring to a wider audiance. The «lampe Gras» is a model of balance, elegance and transparency and has become an icon in the history of lighting. The «chaise Surpil» combining chic confort with grace and discretion is as suitable indoors as outside. 3

Gras, une icône du XXe siècle
En 1921, Bernard-Albin Gras crée une gamme de lampes pour l’industrie et les bureaux d’études. La lampe Gras, est étonnante par son ergonomie et la simplicité de sa mécanique - ni vis, ni soudure - qui lui confère une robustesse à toute épreuve. Mais Bernard-Albin Gras est aussi un des premiers designers du XXe siècle : non content d’innover, il ajoute à ses créations une esthétique fonctionnelle originale notamment dans le dessin des fontes et des bielles. Très rapidement, Le Corbusier, séduit par la modernité de son dessin et sa qualité d’utilisation, adopte la gamme des lampes Gras et l’intègre dans son agence ainsi que dans ses nombreuses réalisations à travers le monde. Gras entre alors dans la légende. Suivront Robert Mallet-Stevens, Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann, Eileen Gray, mais également Sonia Delaunay, Georges Braque, Coco Chanel… C’est la première fois dans l’histoire de l’éclairage qu’une lampe est utilisée dans les ateliers et dans les maisons et appartements. Aujourd’hui le lampes Gras sont collectionnée par les amateurs à travers le monde notamment en France, aux États-Unis et au Japon. Le sens inné de l’esthétique de BernardAlbin Gras a traversé le temps. La société d’édition DCW a acquis l’exclusivité des droits de la gamme des lampes Gras.

In 1921 Bernard-Albin GRAS designed a series of lamps for use in offices and in industrial environments.The GRAS lamp, as it was subsequently called, was astounding in its simple, robust and yet very ergonomic design. There are neither screws nor welded joints in the basic form. In 1927 the Ravel company purchased the patent and started production of the GRAS lamps. Bernard-Albin Gras was one of the most innovative designer of the 20th century. The functional esthetic of his lamps and especially the design of details such as those of the arms, stems, brackets and bases were truly original and far ahead of his time. Early on Le Corbusier was seduced by the modern design and user-friendliness of the lamps and be-
came one of Bernard-Albin GRAS’s most enthusiastic supporters using the lamps in his own offices as well as employing them in numerous architectural projects all over the world. Others such as Robert MalletStevens, Jacques Emile Ruhlmann and Eileen Gray followed this trend as well. Furthermore, such well-know artists as Sonia Delaunay and Georges Braque also used these lamps in their studios. For the first time in history, a lamp was equally popular in professional as well as in residential applications. Today, the GRAS lamp has become sought after a collector’s item all over the world, most notably in France, in the United States and in Japan. BernardAlbin Gras’s talented and visionary design has proven to be timeless. 5

Cherchant constamment à perfectionner le luminaire, Bernard-Albin Gras crée les modèles 206 et 207. Ces lampes de table à socle bois sont destinées à un usage en laboratoire : le socle en chêne ou acajou permettait d’isoler la fonte de l’humidité et des chocs électriques. À l’Institut Pasteur et au Jardin des Plantes, le chercheur disposera de chaque côté de la paillasse d’une nº 206 pour la prise de notes et d’une nº 207 de plus petite taille, proche du microscope.
In his constant quest for perfection in lighting Bernard-Albin Gras created models 206 and 207. These table lamps with a wooden base were designed for use in laboratories : the base, made from oak or teak, perfectly insulated the metal parts from moisture and electric currents. At the workbenches in the Pasteur Institute or in the Botanical Gardens, scientists would have at one end a N°206 for making notes, and at the other, smaller, and next to the microscope, a N°207.

Avec sa rotule indéréglable et sa forme graphique, son adéquation parfaite entre forme et fonction, la lampe nº 201 a séduit les architectes les plus novateurs dès sa création en 1921. Le Corbusier l’adopte le premier puis ce modèle trouve rapidement un écho en Allemagne chez les membres du Bauhaus. With its robust joint, its graphical form and the perfect harmony that exists between form and function, lamp N° 201 has been a favourite with all the most innovative architects ever since it first appeared in 1921. Le Corbusier was first to adopt it, before it was taken up in Germany by members of the Bauhaus.

la chaise La chaise Surpil 1927 L’histoire du mobilier Surpil et de la Société des meubles superposables est d’abord celle d’un inventeur français Julien-Henri Porché qui se penche dès 1927 sur la conception d’un mobilier métallique totalement inédit destiné aux espaces publics (restaurants, cafés et ameublement des espaces collectifs). Le créateur marquera la création française de l’époque en concevant ces modèles de chaise à la fois fonctionnels et pourvus de lignes aériennes et esthétiques grâce à l’assemblage de 2 tubes formant assise et dossier. Structure qui confère à cet objet légèreté et solidité. Certains modèles Surpil seront plébiscités par les créateurs de l’époque comme l’atteste la publication en 1929 dans le portfolio Les Meubles en métal, conçu par l’architecte Pierre Pinsard, de planches présentant les meubles Surpil présentés lors du salon d’Automne sur le stand du créateur Gabriel Jouvin. Leur présence dans cet ouvrage aux côtés de planches figurant des meubles de créateurs appartenant à l’avant-garde, comme Louis Sognot, Robert Mallet-Stevens, ou Marcel Breuer, en témoigne.
We have chosen to re-issue the SURPIL chair, first for its comfort and secondly for its line. Made in aluminium (3.5 kg/7.5 lb), this timeless chair is at home anywhere: in a studio, kitchen, bedroom or on a terrace… The Surpil story, and that of the Stackable Furniture Company is first and foremost that of a french inventor, Julien-Henri Porché, who, starting in 1927 turned his attention to designing furniture made entirely from metal for use in public spaces (restaurant terraces, cafés and other public areas). The designer made his mark on French design of the period by creating chairs that were both functional and yet bestowed with a line that was graceful and light through the use of two tubes which were used to form the seat and the back. It is this feature that makes each piece appear light, while at the same time ensuring its underlying strength. Some of the ‘Surpil’ chairs were used by other designers of the period, as the inclusion of a special insert on Surpil furniture that were displayed on the designer Gabriel Jouvin’s stand in the Autumn fair in Paris in the 1929 publication ‘Metal Furniture’ edited by the architect Pierre Pinsard attests. Their inclusion alongside the work of avant-garde designers of the time like Louis Sognot, Robert Mallet-Stevens or Marcel Breuer is evidence of their importance at the time. This innovative, stackable furniture that was both hard-wearing and a precursor in its use of modernist lines, is similar to that which first came out of Germany as part of the Bauhaus movement.
