WINTER 2021 NEWSLETTER

CARERS HUB

I think in many ways 2021 was a more difficult year than 2020 particularly for unpaid carers as restrictions stayed in place and support services continued to be limited in terms of capacity and also in what they could deliver. This has undoubtedly led to some carers feeling very isolated and alone with many feeling exhausted after having to care for over 18 months often 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. PKAVS carers hub has tried to be as proactive as we could be so we could offer support to carers in 2021. For example we were able to get Public Health Scotland to sign off our risk assessment so we could get our Day Services reopened in Perth in February and it is clear from the numbers attending those the positive impact it has on carers that they can get a time away from caring whilst their cared for person is with us. We were also able to expand the reach of the Time4Me short break grant awards so parent carers were included at long last. We also managed to re-establish some face to face respite groups for young and young adult carers towards the end of the year which included such things as a Murder Mystery night and a trip to Alton Towers Theme Park. And also we had our recent Carers Christmas Ceilidh at the Salutation Hotel which I hope many of you managed to attend. We are also administering the Holiday Voucher Scheme for carers in Perth & Kinross and hope many of you access this new initiative so you can be supported to get a break. We hope to re-establish much more support in 2022 but to make sure what we offer is best suited to your needs we will be looking for your thoughts on the best way forward. With that in mind we will be consulting with yourselves in

THANKS TO OUR FUNDERS

early 2022 so we can develop a plan for the year so would really welcome your input I would like to say thank you to the staff and volunteers at the carers hub who over the last year have work selflessly in often difficult circumstances to do all we could to support the many carers registered with us. I would also like to thank our many funders for their continued support and flexibility and the trust they gave us to spend the funding received in the best way which we thought would benefit carers the most. Last but by no way means least I would like to thank all of you. You deserve much more recognition than you get for all that you do and you wonder what state the country would be in now had you not stepped up like you have done in the past 18 months or so. Hopefully this newsletter and Calendar will give you an idea of the services we currently offer carers and I’d encourage you to contact us directly if you would like to find out more about or would like to access any of these. I hope you all have a nice Festive period and get a chance to be with those you love. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Raymond Jamieson PKAVS Carers Hub Manager

ACKNOWLDEGEMENT

DAY CENTRE WELCOME BACK! Margaret and the team have worked hard around us returning to the Day club. We reopened in February and followed all Government Guidance to allow us to keep service users, staff and volunteers as safe as we possibly could. We reopened with lower numbers to allow everyone to adapt the huge changes that we had to make around Covid. Management have reviewed our risk assessment frequently and made changes when needed.

Our numbers have gone up since opening and it seems there is a huge demand for our services. Service users are delighted to be back with us again and carers are delighted to be able to have their well-deserved break again. Staff have now finalised our first holiday since reopening and are looking forward to taking Carers and Cared for away for a long weekend. Christmas outings are being planned as well as a week of festive activities and Christmas lunches for all our Service users.

What our service users said I really enjoy the Day centre. The staff are so caring and so kind to everyone. I look forward to a Monday. Heather

PKAVS Carers Hub would like to thank our Day Centre volunteers, EASyc tutors, Young and Adult Carers volunteers, Complementary Therapists, Respitality Partners and our lovely domestic lady ‘Anita’ for supporting us not only this year but for all the years that we have been delivering the service. Your presence and time are invaluable and appreciated. We could not thank you enough for the support that you have provided us through the years and for many years to come. Should you wish to volunteer for us, please call The Carers Centre on 01738 567076 (option 2).

FORTEVIOT TRUST

I look forward to coming to the Day Club, especially being with among other people. I am more relaxed at the centre than I do at home as I just sit and worry about things. I love to take part in the daily activities that I have never done before and everyone is no nice. Marjorie

ADULT CARERS The adult Carers Team have had another extremely busy year. Since December last year we have received over 500 referrals and continue to support over 1,400 unpaid carers. Although continuing to work from home the team are now offering face to face visits and enjoying having more direct contact with our unpaid carers. Our Social therapies are now back up and running giving carers the opportunity to receive a holistic treatment and have a cuppa and chat with other carers. Therapy vouchers are once again being accessed where carers can receive a batch of 12 therapy vouchers which enables them to receive holistic treatments such as massage, reiki and reflexology.

Telephone SUPPORT Our Telephone Support Line is still very popular and Mary and Lorna currently provide emotional and practical support to over 240 carers between them. They are a listening ear and unpaid carers can use the call time to have a chat or talk about their concerns and worries.

HOSPITAL LINK Our Hospital Link Worker Marie, continues to be the point of contact for Carers whose loved ones are in hospital. Marie provides information, advice and practical support during what can be a stressful time.

SELF-DIRECTED SUPPORT

Referrals for Compass Card Membership with Live Active are now being made, this is where a carer can access any Live Active venue for free for the first three months and then pay £1 per session following this. We continue to look for innovative ways to provide support either face to face or virtually and the team remain passionate about providing the best service we can for unpaid carers. We have been extremely lucky to welcome Joe and Kerry to our team. Kerry is an Adult Carer Support Worker. Joe is our new Male Carer Support Worker and his role is to identify and engage with male carers tailoring support to suit their needs.

CARERS FEEDBACK ON THE PROJECT: Billy met with us twice before our social work assessment and really helped us feel prepared, knowing what we wanted to ask for and how we wanted it to be delivered. This was of great support as my husband was so anxious about the change in his life and was also delighted that Billy included him in conversations and planning and helped him identify what his wishes were

Thank you so much for being there for us, you’ve no idea how much that means

The team would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and to thank you for continuing patience and understanding during yet another busy year

Billy has been the first professional to sit down and explain how care and support works in Scotland and what that means to us and he done it without over complicating it. The information and knowledge, Billy has shared with us has been so insightful. SDS Project (Billy - the worker) was such a great support to us. Good to know someone was listening and had our wishes at the forefront. Billy has been a great listener and is easy to talk to.

Over the last year, our Self-Directed Support Advisor, Billy Morrison has continued to support unpaid Carers and those they care for by providing information about Self-Directed Support options. Billy supports Carers and their families with: • Signposting to local groups/ organisations • Referrals to the access team for assessment • Supporting Carers at professional meetings/ social work assessments • Advocating on Carers behalf • Assistance with recruiting Personal Assistants and or appointing Care providers • Supporting/ advising Carers if they feel they need to challenge decisions or issues that arise (in relation to Care and Support provided)

• Supporting Carers and their families to make any additional arrangements relevant to their situation • Exploring what Self-Directed support options are and what this can look like in real life terms • Providing a safe space to help identify what it is the Carer and their families hope/need to achieve to improve/ change current situations (personal outcomes)

From January to October 2021, the project has supported over 120 Carers and their families, completing 433 direct contacts (face to face/ telephone) with the Carers accessing the project. If you would like to know more about self-directed support or would like support from the project please contact Billy Morrison, SDS Advisor on 01738 567076 or by email at billy.morrison@pkavs.org.uk

ADULT CARERS SOCIAL GROUPS Hi, my name is Kathleen, I am the Carer Community Development worker with PKAVS. At PKAVS we aim to listen to the needs and wants of adult carers and try to accommodate those needs with a variety of fun and interactive social group sessions. PKAVS Adult carer social groups are a place where you can meet others in a similar situation and allows you to try new things. We have mindfulness, pamper, arts N crafts, walking, cycling, cooking, fun quiz’s, day trips, coffee mornings, meeting for lunch and much more.

We also have guest speakers who come along and help to raise awareness of issues, answer specific questions or simply help people understand what their organisation does and what support they offer.

We know we cannot change your situation, but we aim to provide a safe space where you can interact with other carers. Have some ‘me time’ learn new skills, pick up old or start a new hobby.

Looking ahead, PKAVS aims to be proactive in establishing needs, issues, and obstacles for carers wishing to attend groups who currently may not be able to. We want to be able to create new opportunities for adult unpaid carers by bringing carers together, we can continue to do\ this, via face to face or zoom.

We want to hear from YOU about what you are interested in and any hobbies or fun or activities you would enjoy. Contact Kathleen.murray@pkavs.org.uk to share your ideas.

SHORT BREAKS ScotSpirit Holiday Voucher Scheme In October, PKAVS Carers Centre were commissioned as one of the local delivery partners across Scotland to operate and deliver the Scheme in Perth and Kinross. This one-off and time-limited Scheme is funded by the Scottish Government and forms part of the Scottish tourism pandemic recovery programme to help businesses across Scotland get back from their feet. The ScotSpirit Holiday Voucher Scheme (SSHVS) is aimed at supporting individuals, unpaid carers and families on a low-income who have been particularly adversely affected by the impact of the pandemic. Due to lockdown restrictions, many unpaid carers have been left without access to their normal support services and many have struggled due to extended periods of isolation and the lack of any meaningful breaks. The Scheme which offers a contribution towards a chosen break will enable unpaid carers to enjoy either a 2-3-night subsidised overnight stay or a day trip to a visitor attraction in Scotland. There were over 100 businesses who have participated

in the Scheme and Visit Scotland is continuously working hard to encourage businesses to join the Scheme in order to increase the variety of breaks on offer. Breaks are subject to availability and dependent on businesses that are listed in VisitScotland’s directory only. The Scheme has standard criteria and only carers who are registered with PKAVS Carers Centre or any other organisation that provides support to carers living in Perth and Kinross are eligible to apply. Also, due to limited funding, where multiple carers are living in one household, only 1 application will be considered for the whole family. The Scheme is open for applications until 31 March 2022 (subject to availability of funds). Unpaid carers who are successful with their applications can book their breaks up to 31 December 2022 (for example, you can book a break in Easter or a day out in the summer of 2022). The accommodation or entry tickets is generally covered under the Scheme, however, any other additional costs such as meals, travel and other expenses have to be paid by the carer. For further information, you can contact Erman at carershortbreaks@pkavs.org.uk

Respitality – Vanya’s Day Out Vanya went to the Action Glen Adventure Park courtesy of the Crieff Hydro last summer to celebrate her son’s birthday with the family. Through Respitality, she was given a complementary ticket to the venue. Vanya used this opportunity where she had spent some cherished time with the family by enjoying a lovely picnic lunch on a beautiful sunny day. Her children have also enjoyed the various amenities on the site and played a lot. Even Grandma had a great time trying the flying fox for the first time! She said, “We can’t thank the PKAVS staff enough for gifting us the family ticket, it allowed us to have some very precious family time and made our son’s sixth birthday one to remember. Thank you all so much.”. She has also commended the place and said “We would highly recommend Adventure Glen as a brilliant family day out. It was spacious, relaxed and lots of fun was had.”. We are pleased to hear how Vanya and her family had a great time. It was truly uplifting to see their lovely smiles. The break was donated through Respitality which provides meaningful breaks to

unpaid carers by working with local hospitality and leisure providers in the area. PKAVS Carers Hub would also like to thank Louisa Clement’s Professional Haircare, Avant Garde Gifts and Café, Loch Leven’s Larder, Hazeldene & Auld Manse Guest House in Perth, Howe of Torbeg, Action Glen’s Adventure Park at Crieff Hydro and Hostelling Scotland for their generous donations last summer. We are continuously accepting donations from local businesses so we can increase the availability and variety of breaks that we can offer to carers. Should you wish to become one of our Respitality Partners and donate a break, please contact Erman at carershortbreaks@pkavs.org.uk

SHORT BREAKS Complementary Therapy Vouchers and Social Therapies Complementary therapy vouchers are available to unpaid carers who wish to access a relaxing massage or treatment of their choice. We have over 30 approved therapists on board within Perth and Kinross. Unpaid carers can request a set of 12 vouchers which is valid for a year and will give them a maximum of 45 massage sessions (subject on offer by the therapist) free of charge. We are also delighted to announce that our remote social therapies are back. After a long period of absence due to lockdown restrictions, we have successfully delivered our first social therapy at The Gateway (Perth) in October. Furthermore, we had started delivering our new satellite locations in Blairgowrie, Kinross and St. Madoes. Kathleen Murray, who is our Carers Community Development Worker runs these sessions. Due to the effects of the pandemic and the changes it brought on how we live our lives now, we had to adapt how our social therapies run, too. This has meant lesser slots available as we had to allocate extra time for the therapists to sanitise their treatment areas. Also, we have

introduced a new criterion where carers who have a palliative caring role and are providing 30+ hours of caring will be prioritised and can book 2 weeks in advance before the therapy session. Whereas other carers who wish to book a slot can phone 1 week before the therapy session. Should you wish to book a space, please contact carershubadmin@pkavs.org.uk or phone Gareth Lalewicz at the Carers Centre on 01738 567076. Date and time varies depending on location.

Time4Me Fund The ShortBreaksFund has allocated us further funding in October so we can continue to deliver our Time4Me Fund for the year 2021-2022. The Time4Me Fund has been a primary source of funding for carers in Perth and Kinross over the last few years who are wishing to apply for a short break and hundreds of carers have benefitted by receiving a small grant to contribute towards a break of their choice. This year’s round of funding will be used to support all unpaid carers, including young carers and parent carers of disabled children to apply for a short break. Eligibility criteria apply. For further information, please contact Erman at carershortbreaks@pkavs.org.uk

YOUNG CARERS The YOUNG CARERS TEAM support around 380 registered young carers to manage their caring role, have a break from caring and to make connections with other young people who share their experience. We do this with a mix of support work, grants, groups, activity packs, trips and residentials. We have been able to offer different levels of help along with local partners, and more targeted support from the team for those who are affected most.

We work hard to ensure those who need most support are prioritised but remember that all young carers have an open door to tell us when things have changed at any time along with the opportunity for an annual review.

what What is a young Carer? carer? • Aged between 5-15 years old • Care for a family member of any age due to disability, mental illness or problems relating to substance or alcohol misuse

Young carer staff support young The team have said a sad farewell to a few members this year who have gone off to start new career adventures. We wish them all well. But we are delighted to welcome Megan Lamb back from maternity leave and Joanne McKain and Garry Hutton as new support workers. From the new year we look forward to having 4 support workers in post and will recruit 2 new members in January. We are also very excited to now have a dedicated remit to develop our Respite offer further. Masie Stewart-McIlwraith is now in post. Thanks to the generous support of our Funders we have a team of support workers who work with young carers to put in place their YOUNG CARER STATEMENT – their own personalised plan. This plan looks at thing the young person would like to change

and records the things that can be done and who else might be involved to help make them happen. Statements were offered this year to new and existing young carers. Some of the common things that young carer need help with are; • Engaging with learning • Managing their caring responsibilities • Dealing with emotions and building resilience • Telling people how they are feeling • Building confidence to go to activities • Finding out how they can get a break from caring Our workers support them to work out what will help and take the next steps to achieving their goals.

YOUNG CARERS SUPPORT AND RESPITE FOR YOUNG CARERS We know that having a break from caring can take many forms. At home, going to activities and some things specifically for young carers. Our aim in 2022 is to increase the spread of support and respite opportunities to all localities of Perth and Kinross. Not just provided by PKAVS young carers, but also in partnership with other local agencies. Ideas include young carer nurture groups for 5-7 year olds, themed short courses focusing on hobbies and interests, small group programmes to support developing young carer resilience and confidence as well as our usual holiday programmes, trips and residentials.

NEW DEVELOPMENTS

RESIDENTIALS

• We have partnered with Duke of Edinburgh through funding from the MacRobert Trust to revamp and continue our young carer Bronze Award programme as well as supporting progression to Silver and Gold awards. • We are working with Mindspace to pilot a new programme to support primary 6 and 7 young carers to promote social and emotional wellbeing.

The support of funders allows us to organise some unique experiences for young carers. We aim each year to run a residential for primary and secondary age. 18 secondary young carers enjoyed the thrills and spills of Alton Towers in October this year. This trip was part of our own Young Carers Festival allowing the experience of an overnight break away from home.

YOUNG CARERS VOICE We have a group of young carers who represent our young people and have their voice in shaping the local offer? They meet regularly and talk about issues that are important to young carers and also provide feedback to local, regional and national agendas. We also consult with them on changes to our procedures and services. This year they have also been taking part in the Columba 1400 leadership programme. Building their skills to develop and deliver a community project. They have decided to focus on all things mental wellbeing following our young carers Wellbeing Survey earlier this year. They will be working with local agencies to see what supports they can put in place for young carers. Thanks to them all for all of their commitments and effort over the year.

As well as building confidence in being away overnight the trip allowed everyone to have a break from caring, make new friends and have fun. The staff had a blast too. 10 primary age had a 4 night break to the fantastic Hopscotch facility at Ardgour. For many it was the first time ever away from home without family. Horse riding, beach walk, Segway’s and sky ride were enjoyed. Along with lots of time to make friendships and have fun at the amazing accommodation. In 2022 we hope to support 10 young carers to experience the Ocean Youth Trust sailing trip. A four night, life changing experience.

YOUNG ADULT CARERS Our YAC service is busier than ever, with 156 young adult carers receiving support and 33 young carers getting ready to move up. This year has seen a few changes to our service. Jenny Bruce the YAC support worker has moved post and will be missed by many, however she continues to work with our carers centre as our Adult Carers Development Worker. Julie Maceachen is now in post as the Young Adult Carer and Carers Education Development worker and will oversee the YAC service with a new Young Adult Carers Support worker due to start in the beginning of the new year.

We have had many great trips this year including paintballing, escape rooms, bowling and paddleboarding and are looking forward to having a new timetable of trips and events in 2022!

This partnership working really expands the support available to carers and we hope to link in with many more of our partners in 2022.

We have been closely linking up with other partners in the community to ensure we are more able to ensure that the opportunity for support and positive destinations are delivered by the appropriate service and are working closely with organisations such as The Lighthouse, The Bike Station, YMCA and Perth College.

EASYC PROJECT As always our education service continues to be super busy with around 70 1-1 sessions taking place weekly and 3 weekly primary tutor groups. We have been blown away with the levels of engagement and enthusiasm from our young carers. We continue to develop our professional connection with schools to ensure young people are supported to access education in ways that meets their needs. This is a very positive relationship with good outcomes.

We are able to offer support in the following subject areas: • Maths • Chemistry • Physics • Biology • French • Spanish • English • Music • Business Management

We now have a growing list of Young Carers Champions. This is a member of each school staff who will be the contact for our service and all young carers attending that school. This role is invaluable to ensure we provide a robust support system for all young carers in Perth and Kinross. We are also in the process of attaining SQA approval and hope to be able to open our offer of education to young adults and adult carers in the new year. Watch this space!

EVENTS FOR CARERS CARERS CONNECT 2021 Carers Connect enables carers to come together to meet other carers and professionals, access advice and information stalls, take part in interactive workshops and listen to carers tell their story. This year we delivered Carers Connect in three localities within Perth and Kinross to give carers living in rural areas the opportunity to attend in person. This included Perth, Pitlochry and Crieff! The event was delivered in person and virtually based on feedback from carers advising the ease of being able to take part from home.

We had a variety of workshops delivered online and in person including:
