SUMMER 2022 NEWSLETTER

CARERS HUB

Hello everyone and I hope this newsletter finds you safe and well? I know that it’s been another unsettling period since our Christmas newsletter particularly because of how the Omicron variant impacted on us all again. At the risk of repeating myself hopefully there are better times ahead. Following feedback from yourselves we are now trying to reinstate as much face to face support as we can as you told us how much you missed this whilst still offering support virtually to carers who prefer that option. Hopefully as time moves on we will have a comprehensive package of support using both of these methods so our support is more accessible and far reaching. This newsletter is to give you an idea of the support we can offer that is currently available. In particular can I draw your attention to the uplift in funding we have received from

THANKS TO OUR FUNDERS

the Scottish Government this year which means we have been able to increase the amount you can apply for with our Time4Me short break grant awards service. I’d also like to draw your attention to the calendar of events we have planned for Carers Week in June and hope that you are able to take part in some of these. Finally just to say if we can help you or you’d like to learn more about any of the services mentioned within this newsletter then please do not hesitate to get in touch and we will do all we can to help. Take care. Raymond Jamieson PKAVS Carers Hub Manager

DAY CENTRE PKAVS day services offer unpaid carers access to regular breaks from caring through the person they care for coming along to the carers centre for the day. Whilst here the cared for person is well looked after by our experienced staff team. A day at the centre includes a chance to meet and make new friends and to get a change of scenery whilst taking part in a very busy and assorted calendar of activities including things such as regular live musical entertainment, organised activities such as gentle exercise, relaxation techniques, arts and crafts, bingo and much more besides.

The day services also offer day trips and weekend residential breaks for carers and their cared for throughout the year. In fact some of these pictures show what we were up to at the most recent weekend residential break away in Aberfoyle in April.

The best way to find out more about our day services is to contact our registered manager Margaret Campbell on 01738 567076 (Choose option 2) or email her at margaret.campbell@pkavs.org.uk

Clients who attend also are offered a healthy and nutritious 2 course meal prepared freshly each day by our day centre cook. Transport can also be provided to and from the carers centre if required. The cost to attend PKAVS day services is £30 per day and these are available Monday to Friday for 50 weeks in the year.

LEND A HAND AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE WITH PKAVS CARERS HUB Looking for a great way to meet new people, add structure to your weeks, and have the reward of helping others?

FORTEVIOT TRUST

Many people might think volunteering isn’t for them. Too formal, a big commitment, and needs training/ qualifications. But that isn’t the case. Here at PKAVS, we are looking for people of any age who are friendly, helpful, active, and keen to help others. We can then work with you to see what type of opportunities might fit with the time and skills you have to offer. Serving cups of tea in day services, setting up the Zoom link for our online social groups, helping with a game of bingo, chatting with someone, helping with homework, young carers activity groups and giving someone a lift to an activity. These are all things that are a great help to the people we work with.

We have a range of opportunities in our Day Centre and across our young, young adult, and adult carers teams. If you have a bit of time to give we are sure we will find something you will find rewarding. We provide full support and training appropriate to the role you might take on and opportunities to become involved in different activities and events too. If you would like to find out more send us your contact details and we can call you back for a chat to tell you a bit more. Or visit the Volunteer Scotland website and type in ‘PKAVS’ to the keyword search and see all the roles on offer. But remember, if you want to chat about more informal opportunities please get in touch. Email: carershubadmin@pkavs.org.uk or tel. 01738 567076

THANK YOU TO OUR LOVELY VOLUNTEERS! We value the time and work that our volunteers provide to support us in running the service. Your presence and dedication are invaluable and we owe our success to you all. We are constantly looking for volunteers to help us run the Day Centre so if you have spare time, are looking for something to do and passionate about making a difference in someone’s life, please contact us on 01738 567076 (option 2). I joined PKAVS as a volunteer in November 2019 after caring for and finally losing my husband to cancer. At this very difficult time, I sought an opportunity to both give something back to society as well as provide me with a purpose and supportive environment in which to rebuild my life. All the staff at the Carers Hub have been warm and extremely welcoming from day one. They have not only given me a chance to learn new skills, but they have also highly valued the contribution volunteers make to their service. As a result, I have been able to rebuild my confidence and begin to see a brighter long-term future. Volunteering with PKAVS is a unique win-win opportunity with benefits for all and I can’t recommend it highly enough. Kathy Cook

CARERS WEEK CARERS WEEK: MAKING CARING VISIBLE, VALUED AND SUPPORTED Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don’t think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support. The COVID-19 pandemic had a monumental impact on unpaid carers’ lives – not only because of the increased amount of care that many provided, but because of the far-reaching effect that providing this level of care has had on unpaid carers. Many people also took on new caring responsibilities for their relatives and friends who are disabled, ill or older and who need support. They need to be recognised for the difficulties they are experiencing, respected for all they are doing, and provided with information, and given the support they need to care safely. So during Carers Week, we are coming together to make caring Visible, Valued and Supported

MAKING CARING VISIBLE VALUED &SUPPORTED

A carer is anyone who looks after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness or who needs extra help as they grow older. Caring’s impact on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work can be significant. Whilst many feel that caring is one of the most important things they do, its challenges should not be underestimated. Caring without the right information and support can be tough. It is vitally important that we recognise the contribution carers make to their families and local communities, workplaces and society, and that they get the support they need.

Short Breaks

Short Breaks

TIME4ME FUND PKAVS Carers Hub has been awarded funding again this year from the Scottish Government and the Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP) to deliver our Time4Me Fund until March 2023. This means that more unpaid carers will benefit from accessing a short break of their choice. We are also delighted to announce that unpaid carers can now apply for up to £400 providing they meet the eligibility criteria. We recognised that due to the increase in living costs, paying for a decent break can be costly, therefore, this increase in the amount of grant unpaid carers can apply for is surely a welcome treat.

COMPLEMENTARY THERAPY VOUCHERS Complementary therapy vouchers are available to adult carers who wish to access a relaxing massage or treatment of their choice. We have over 30 approved therapists on board within Perth and Kinross. You can choose from a wide variety of treatments such as Reiki, Reflexology, Indian head or Hot Stone massage. Adult carers (18 years old and above) can request a set of 12 vouchers which is valid for a year and will give them a maximum of 45 massage sessions (subject to offer by the therapist) free of charge.

Last year, almost 400 carers have benefited from a small grant through Time4Me. Most of them have used the grant for paying a short break away, IT equipment, games equipment and garden furniture. Rebecca was one of the many unpaid carers who have benefited from Time4Me. She is a young adult carer who cares for her grandparents and used her grant to book a 2 nights break in Inverness with her partner to celebrate her birthday.

Rebecca highlighted that the break had helped her to clear her mind as she was constantly worrying about her grandparents. In her own words, Rebecca said, “I haven’t had any time away and it was really nice to get away but I know they (grandparents) were in good hands with my brother”. She also said, “Thanks to you guys at PKAVS for all the support you give and without your help, I wouldn’t have been able to get away”. The possibilities are endless with Time4Me. You decide when, where, who and what you want to do! Should you wish to apply, you can download the application form and guidance notes on www.pkavs.org.uk/carers/ adult-carers/info-support/shortbreaks/time4me/ or call the Carers Centre at 01738 567076 (option 2).

SCOTSPIRIT HOLIDAY VOUCHER SCHEME So far, 33 unpaid carers have benefited from having a break since the launch of the Scheme in October 2022; being the majority were overnight stays. As the impact of the pandemic left a huge impact on carers’ well-being and increased responsibility, carers were left feeling exhausted more than ever. The Scheme was welcomed by a huge number of applications from unpaid carers wishing to have a break from their caring role. The application is now closed and we are in the process of matching breaks to carers who have applied. A few carers have also chosen to go on a day trip and one of these was parent and son Nicola and Logan. They went on a day trip to Edinburgh where both visited the Camera Obscura museum and Dynamic Earth planetarium. The last few months have proven challenging for them so it was a fantastic way to escape from their normal routine. Nicola planned the trip thoroughly to ensure that both of them will have a great day. Prior to the trip, Nicola said, “It’s just a change from all the normal caring routine and allows us to interact in a different way because we can both just forget all the problems and issues we have to deal with on a daily basis. We never get to go on days out as between our anxiety due to sensory issues with autism and the cost of days out is really hard for us”.

The break has made a huge impact on Nicola and Foley’s well-being. Nicola described it as incredible and a brilliant day! Logan on the other hand thoroughly enjoyed the experience because it was something that he was really passionate about and interested in. Nicola added, “A day away feels like a week!! A change is as good as a rest and it’s just lovely to share things he enjoys with him, we spent 40mins after the planetarium show talking to the astrologer, and my son’s passion and knowledge are so lovely to see, he doesn’t ever speak to people when we are out so it was so nice for him to interact with someone who has the same passion as him, it gives up such a boost and helps us continue is a difficult and stressful situation”.

Please contact the Carers Centre on 01738 567076 (option 2) or email carershubadmin@pkavs.org.uk should you wish to request CT vouchers.

GOOD LUCK WITH THE FUTURE! PKAVS Carers Hub said farewell to Erman who left his post as Carers Respite Development Officer in May to seek new pastures. Erman has been instrumental in providing short break opportunities during his time with PKAVS, especially throughout the pandemic. He has awarded numerous grants to carers that we support to ensure they get the break they deserve. Thank you for your dedication to supporting unpaid carers and we wish you luck in your next adventure!

Male Adult Carers We now have a Male Adult Carers Support Worker in place to deliver specific support to male carers. Joe Constantin is delivering this service and is available to provide advice, information, support groups/trips and guidance to male carers in Perth and Kinross.

ADULT CARERS The Adult carers team have had another busy 4 months since our last newsletter. So far this year we have received 154 referrals and have recently introduced a new process to ensure that carers are offered an Adult Carer Support Plan as quickly as possible after referral. We are currently processing a backlog of carers waiting for Adult Carer Support Plans which we are hoping to deal with as quickly as possible and will be in touch with those carers shortly.

For further information please contact: Joe Constantin Email : Ionel.constantin@pkavs.org.uk Tel : 01738 567076 (option 2) Mob : 07955 705672

SELF-DIRECTED SUPPORT Since our last newsletter in December, our Self-Directed Support Advisor, Billy Morrison has continued to support unpaid Carers and those they care for by providing information about Self-Directed Support options, support in understanding and identifying personal outcomes, support to access local groups/ organisations, referrals for assessment, supporting Carers at professional meetings/ social work assessments , advocating on Carers behalf, assistance with recruiting Personal Assistants and or appointing Care providers, supporting/ advising Carers if they feel they need to challenge decisions or issues that arise (in relation to Care and Support provided), supporting set up of alternative supports to help Carers in their role and signposting to other relevant organisations/ projects.

From January to April 2022, the project has supported 57 Carers and their families, completing 275 direct contacts (face to face/ telephone) with the Carers accessing the project. Carers feedback on the project: PKAVS SDS Project has been a great support to us.

If it wasn’t for Billy and the support he provided around recruitment of personal assistants, I don’t think we would be in the positive position we are now.

If you would like to know more about Self-Directed Support or would like support from the project please contact Billy Morrison, SDS Advisor on 01738 567076 or by email at billy.morrison@pkavs.org.uk

Feedback from Carers I just want to write to express my sincere thanks for the funding received from the Winter Recovery Fund. I am really delighted that my application was given consideration and support and I am very grateful for the award received. Please pass on my thanks to all involved.

Thank you for the surprise M&S. I think we will drink your health with a couple of nice wines. Thank you for all your support. We wish you all a happy xmas and we all hope for a better 2022.

Hi... I have had a crummy day, and I was just on the verge of having a good, blubbery pity party for myself when your email popped up. Yes, please... I would love to have some pink vouchers! Thank for turning my day around

Our Young Adult Carer Service for carers aged between 18-25 has now moved into the Adult Carers Team and Kerry is our new Young Adult Carer Support Worker. You can contact her on 01738 567076 option 2

Our Telephone Support line continues to be extremely popular with carers and the Mary and Lorna currently support over 100 carers with regular calls providing emotional and sometimes practical support.

We have also been hosting regular weekly library drop-ins in the rural areas to promote PKAVS services and to encourage anyone who doesn’t identify themselves as being an unpaid carer to engage with our services.

Marie our Hospital Link Worker continues to support carers whose loved one is I in hospital. Marie now has more of a presence on the wards and can provide advice, information and support early into the cared for’s admission.

Our Football memories group has also proved popular for people living with Dementia and their carers. The cared for takes part in activities with volunteers from Saints in the Community while the carers enjoy a beverage and blether with other carers and Anne our support worker who facilitates the group. For Information about this group please contact Anne Gray on 01738 567076 option 2.

Accessing PKAVS SDS Project and getting the support provided by Billy has alleviated a great amount of stress and worry

SOCIAL GROUPS It’s been fantastic to be able to continue to run face-to-face social groups again. Carers have missed being able to meet with each other in person however, we recognise the benefit of online group sessions and continue to offer a mix of both when delivering sessions. Many carers find social groups vital in accessing opportunities to relax, have some fun, meet other carers and access support from PKAVS Staff. The ability to access peer support is often something recognised by carers who attend.

This year we’ve been to visit The Kelpies, The V&A Museum, Glasgow and a residential in Dunoon! We’re currently planning trips for the rest of the year so watch this space!

Thank you for arranging the yoga session this afternoon. It was absolutely fantastic and so relaxing! It was lovely and easy to follow. I’ve been to a lot of yoga classes over the last 20 years, but this was the best by far. Thank you so much. Most relaxed I have felt in months!

FEEDBACK FROM CARERS: For months I’ve had notifications about carers training and lately I felt I ought to sign up for a few. The online dementia awareness course was great and has helped my understanding of my own caring role. I attended First Aid training it was so good and informative. I really wish I had signed up to training events earlier but I’m glad of the opportunities now.

I really enjoyed the informal and relaxed manner in which the people from Macnabs delivered the information. I left feeling more confident that I was doing things ok.

We always want to hear your ideas regarding training so please get in touch if there is something not currently on offer that you feel would benefit you as a carer. We email out our calendar to all carers every two months (post option available if required). If you would like to be added to our distribution list please contact the hub on 01738 567076 or email jenny.bruce@pkavs.org.uk. You can also check out our website and Facebook page to keep up to date with all our training events: Website: www.pkavs.org.uk/events/ Facebook: @PKAVSCarersHub

There’s been a few changes within the Young Adult Carers service this year. While the YAC service traditionally supported carers from 16 years old, in line with the Carer’s Act the YAC service will now support those 18-25, alongside a transition worker to work with young carers, 14-18, transitioning from young carers to young adult carers. My name’s Kerry and I started as the new Young Adult Carer Support Worker in April, but have been with PKAVS for a year now having previously worked as an Adult Carer Support Worker.

The Young Adult Carer’s Voice has been meeting on a monthly basis and is a group of YACs who help shape the experiences and services available to YACs. The group are currently working with film maker, Ben Owen, to make a short film to raise awareness of unpaid carers. The group are hoping this video will be a good resource for carers to use when talking to employers about their caring role. A small group of YACs recently met up for dinner at Pizza Express to catch-up and discuss what kind of groups and trips they would like to see as part of the YAC summer programme. The feedback from the YACs was they would like a good variety of indoor and outdoor activities to suit all different interests and abilities. Keep an eye out for a timetable of events for this summer!

This year we’re looking to focus on employability by working in partnership with organisations such as YMCA, the John Muir Award, and Skills Development Scotland. This will allow us to run a variety of workshops and programmes to help YACs improve their CVs and interview skills, and gain work experience and new skills. We’re working in partnership with the Bike Station again to run the ‘shifting gears’ programme after positive feedback from last year. The shifting gears programme allows YACs to receive a refurbished bike and attend workshops, classes and group cycles. Jaeden Singh, took part in the shifting gears programme last year for some motivation to be more active. Jaeden particularly enjoyed the workshops on mechanics and bike maintenance. Taking part in the programme has led to Jaeden now working for the bike station as an assistant mechanic, which involves helping with bike repairs and services, merchandising, customer service, and assisting on group cycles. Jaeden really enjoys the work he does with the bike station and has said he would never have known about this job opportunity if it wasn’t for PKAVS and the shifting gears programme.

YOUNG CARERS It’s been a very busy and changing year for the young carers team! Whilst the pandemic did initially restrict a lot of what we would normally offer, over the course of the year we gradually began to be able to do more and more things again and as well as our day trips & groups we took some young carers on a trip to Hopscotch in Fort William and Alton towers which was very much enjoyed and appreciated by all who attended. We are a very busy service and currently have 422 young carers registered with us! Sadly we have said goodbye to some of the team who have accepted other exciting new opportunities however, we welcome onboard new team members who have quickly become invaluable assets to our service and we have a great program of support and events being planned for the year ahead.

CHANGES TO THE WAY WE WORK Traditionally all young carers have been assigned a worker however, in order for all our team to be available to young carers who require specific support we are changing the way we work. All young carers will remain registered with the service and will only be assigned a named worker for assessment, review or 1-1 support. Once these have been completed they will go back to being registered until they require further input.

HOODIES

YOUNG CARERS (YCS) AND YOUNG ADULT CARERS (YACS)

EASYC

Over the past years our Young Carers team has traditionally supported YCs 5-15yrs and our YAC service 16-25 yrs. However, to bring our ages in line with the Carers Act and other services across Scotland our YC team will now support up to 18yrs. Therefore, we are recruiting a specific YC transition worker who will work with YCs 14-18 yrs as it is recognised that the needs of this age group can be specific and we can ensure we are targeting these needs efficiently. Our YAC service will support YACs 18-25 yrs and will work closely alongside the YC transition worker. Should you wish to discuss any of the information above please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are currently working hard planning our calendar of events for the year ahead and hope to have an exciting programme lined up in due course.

Our Education Attainment Service for Young Carers has also been incredibly busy and over the past year has supported 158 young people, that is an incredible 1494 1-1 sessions. We are currently recruiting tutors and so far, have had a great response. In addition to our current nurture group we will begin running our Perth Primary Tutor Group on Fridays after the Easter holidays and we hope to get primary groups in other localities up and running soon. We would like to take this opportunity as always to thank our dedicated tutors who have been incredibly supportive and flexible and have built really good relationships with the young people they support. We would also like to acknowledge the young carers using this service and thank you for your enthusiasm and motivation We are also delighted to announce we have received additional funds to be able to offer tuition for all those sitting exams in April-May and would encourage any young carers in this position to get in touch

All new referrals will receive a hoodie on completion of the Young Carers Assessment and once outcomes have been identified. Existing registered young carers will receive a hoodie on completion of their annual review.

1-1 SUPPORT Where there is an identified need we can offer up to six 1-1 support sessions with one of the team. This will be tied in with the Young Carers Assessment, Statement, Review or through identified changes to caring role or situation.

RESPITE OPPORTUNITIES

YOUNG CARERS TEAM UPDATE We wanted to let everyone know about the changes to our team and new way of working. Firstly, we bid a fond farewell to our coordinator Gill McShea who has led the team for the past two years getting everyone over the hurdles brought on by the pandemic. She will be missed by all and we wish her the very best for her future endeavours. We would like to welcome our new team who are really excited about working with everyone in the year ahead.

All new referrals will be able to access respite opportunities once the Young Carers Assessment has been completed and outcomes have been identified. Existing registered young carers will be eligible to access respite which meets their identified outcomes after completion of their annual review. We have made these changes to ensure that we are doing annual reviews for all young carers, this is really important to ensure that their caring role remains manageable, that they have opportunity for appropriate respite and we identify any other outcomes that require support either from ourselves or our partners in the community.

INTRODUCING YOUR LOCAL SOCIAL PRESCRIBERS As a team of soon to be six Social Prescribers, we offer an alternative approach to non – clinical and traditional statutory services across Perth and Kinross. Working in partnership with Health and Social Care we provide people with information and advice by signposting to access local community groups, 3rd sector organisation and voluntary opportunities. We accept referrals from individuals aged 16+ to older adult and will work with each person on a short-term basis. Our aim is to improve people’s health and wellbeing through self-help, empowering people to make informed choices, build confidence, learn new skills, meet new friends, and reconnect with their community. The Technology Enabled Care (TEC) Team are committed to helping people stay at home, independently for longer. We work closely with the Community Alarms and Telecare Team to provide devices, services and support to service-users and carers in their own homes. We offer a TEC roadshow that includes a presentation, a selection of devices and a Q&A session that can travel anywhere in Perth and Kinross. With the easing of restrictions, our roadshows have had to be put on hold over the past two years but we are now able to offer these again for summer 2022. Our SmartFlat located in Carpenter Court is also open again. Please contact TEC@pkc.gov.uk to discuss availability and arrange a roadshow demonstration or a SmartFlat tour appointment.
