FROM THE EDITORIAL TEAM
With the approach of the Easter holidays and hopefully warmer sunny days. The RNLI Lifeguards return to Crantock Beach for the Easter holidays from Friday 29 March to Sunday 14 April, and then return again in May.
As a result of the high tides early in March the dunes have taken another hammering - with further erosion at both the car park end and the access pint from Green Lane. The National Trust has taken great pains to ensure that where possible areas have been fenced off and sign posted. Please be aware that the dunes are very unstable at the moment and likely to move and therefore are not suitable to play on. There are been a number of instances in recent weeks where children have been digging into and sliding down the dunes with parents seemingly oblivious to the dangers.
We wish you a Happy Easter.
BOB CANN
Lorna and her family would like to thank everyone for the beautiful flowers, cards and warm hugs during the sad time of the loss of Bob. Your kindness has been overwhelming and has helped enormously in the healing process. Donations to Cornwall Hospice Care and Cornwall Air Ambulance totalled £500. Thank you so much dear Village. xx
PAT CLARKE
We send our heartfelt condolences for Bernie at the passing of Pat.
NANCY KEARTON
It is with great sadness we announced the passing of Nancy Kearton. Nancy was born in Crantock in 1927 to Herbert and Annie Tozer. Nancy married Frederick Kearton in 1947 and brought up their family in Berwyn on West Pentire Road. They built and moved into Radgel on Pentire Green where they spent many happy years together. Nancy lived in Crantock all her life until ill health necessitated a move in care.
We send our condolences to Nancy’s family.

LONDON MARATHON TRAINING 2024 UPDATE
As I write this there is just five weeks till the big day. I say this with some trepidation as I am now suffering from a hip injury. I have been doing longer and longer runs whilst following my training plan. Last Saturday I completed 21km which is the equivalent of a half marathon. There was a brief moment of joy before i registered that I needed to double that. This week I got to 14 miles before experiencing severe pain in my hip so long three mile walk to get back to my start point. I am hoping that it can be sorted in time. I would be crossing everything but some bits just hurt too much. Thank you all once again for your support and I hope to be able to report back with good news next month. Bel

CRANTOCK VILL AGE HALL
VILLAGE HALL MONTHLY UPDATE
I hope that the Building Developments can now be apparent to everyone passing the hall as the extension and car park works are reaching conclusion. The extension has a few small electrical issues to conclude, and we need to paint the storage room floor before thinking of the items that will be better suited in that location rather than in other rooms or the main hall itself.
The Extension has been painted white and we have decided that the existing hall’s exterior will be painted likewise after the guttering and fascia's have been cleaned.
The Tarmac surfacing is awaiting for the parking bays to be painted with bespoke areas for the two EV car charging points and also a disabled bay.
The Pedestrian entrance up from Halwyn Road to the Village Hall has also been widened to allow a doublepushchair’s width hence avoiding using the busy main road as quickly as possible. It might be worth mentioning that you must be very careful exiting the car park as cars do speed along Halwyn Road at that point.
The Restrictive Barrier up to the field has also had a height restrictor fitted in our efforts to make the area

more secure and avoid the unwanted vehicles we had last year. It is 2.2 metres high and the slope now has matting past the barrier to avoid skidding on the grass.
Finally on the usage of the EV chargers there should be a separate explanatory article on Page 8 in this magazine’s issue to give advice as to how to operate this new facility.

CRANTOCK METHODIST CHURCH
Looking for The Meaning of Life
It’s a sad fact that many go through life without discovering the real reason for our very existence. The truth is that we were created to know the Lord, which is so much more than just the natural life, which is limited in scope and length. Man is created in God’s image and designed for so much more than just earthly dwelling. Let me explain:-
God is three in One. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and we are three in one, spirit, soul and body. Our body is to relate to the earth: our soul is our unique character and personality; our spirit is given to relate to God, who is Spirit. So far so good! However there is a problem, because sin has caused our spirit man to die, meaning we are disconnected from relating to our heavenly Father. This is why Pilgrim’s Progress begins with Christian feeling the burden of sin and the search to find a solution, which eventually led to the CROSS. There is no other way to really know the Lord other than through Jesus Christ. That is because He took our sin, along with the punishment of death, to the CROSS and those willing to put their trust in this finished work of sacrifice are forgiven, and their spirits made alive. WOW! In this way, we are re-united to our true destiny to know the Lord and enjoy His presence forever.!!
BUT because we have ALL sinned, we ALL need to discover how to deal with the sin ‘burden’, and find

forgiveness at the CROSS. Crucifixion was a brutal way to die, but this sacrificial LOVE offering opens up for us a whole new SPIRITUAL dimension to life, if we only believe and choose to follow God ’s path.
Some search for this spiritual awakening by exploring various other paths, but there is only ONE WAY to heaven; through the CROSS. You have to set out on the journey and make that decision to tread the narrow path. In Pilgrim’s Progress, Christian discovered this, and set off on the journey of truth, hope and salvation
If you would like to set out on this journey of faith here is a prayer you could pray
Dear Heavenly Father
I truly want to belong to you, and realise I am a sinner and need your forgiveness. I believe that Christ died for me, taking on the punishment I deserve. Please cleanse my heart and come and live in me, so I can walk and talk with you in a love relationship. Thank you that this is what I was created for and now I have eternal life, through Christ Jesus, my Saviour and Lord. Amen
This article is from a bible study series written by Brenda Taylor, using the famous book Pilgrim ’s Progress, written in 1678, this was divinely given to John Bunyan while he was in prison for his faith.

CRANTOCK ROWING CLUB UPDATE
Wow! What a month March was. We kicked it off with a flying start, having had a few training sessions with the Truro River Rowing Club, who kindly loaned us not only their plastic gigs over at Loe Beach, to train in calmer water, but also a couple of their most experienced crew, Jordan and Daryl to help us train both our Men’s and Ladies teams, to help prepare us for the big race. A huge thanks goes to them and Peter Bennett from Newquay who also helped with our training and who also coxed our Men’s team on race day. A special thanks also goes to Danny, who without his help and commitment to the club throughout last year, we wouldn’t have been in any position to race.
The Three Rivers Race, signals the start of the Cornish Pilot Gig Association’s (CPGA) racing season – hosted by Caradon Gig Club. We knew it was going to be a challenge, as it’s not only the longest river race of the season being around 6miles up and down the River Tamar, it’s the first of the season, with little opportunity to train in the gig over the winter, plus it was our first ever race as the newly reformed Crantock Rowing Club.
However, the men’s crew did us proud and came 70 th out of 95 gigs in the Men’s Race and came in, in under an hour 00:57:36. Our Men’s Captain Nelly Webber told us ‘It was an incredible experience, and I’m so proud of the boys who worked so hard in an extremely gruelling race. The atmosphere throughout the whole day was amazing and I’m very much looking forward to returning with 4 crews next year instead of 1. I would also like to say a massive thank you to everyone in the village who has supported us as a club and helped us get to where we are currently.’
We’ve bought another boat!
Due to the popularity of our new club, and wanting to give more people an opportunity to get in the water, we have bought another boat with extremely generous and kind donations from Chris Eustice, Paul Thornton and Keith & Mary Breen. THANK YOU! We have now bought Messack from Truro River Rowing Club, she’s a wooden gig built in 2009 by Andrew Nancarrow boat builders Bissoe. But more about this exciting development another time.
Social rowing has now started again, if you fancy giving it a go, and want to have some fun gig rowing please let us know. If you want to row, once you’ve joined up we encourage you to sign up and use the SPOND app, so you can sign up to specific rows. If you want to become a member our renewal costs this year will be £15 for Social rowers and £50 for competitive rowing members. We’ll be in contact with members soon.
Now the weather is brightening up and spring is here, there will be more opportunities to row! We can’t wait to see you all.
It’s not all about the rowing, don’t forget Tickets are on Sale for the CRC SOCIAL – FRIDAY 5th

W I BOOK REVIEW
TITLE: LESSONS IN CHEMISTRY
AUTHOR: BONNIE GARMUS
Bonnie Garmus an American Author and former copy writer in the tech industry now lives in the UK. This is her first novel (April 22) and written in her sixties. It has been a major success published by 35 publishers around the world and translated into 42 languages. It was, however, rejected no fewer than 98 times. The author reported in a recent interview that she wrote the first chapter in anger at her office desk after a bad incident in a meeting.
Elizabeth Zott is a chemist starting her career in the early 1960s, battling to prove herself against discrimination and male domination in the workplace. She is beautiful, not warm or socially adept but logical, brusque and very intelligent. Tragedy strikes changing her life forever when she unexpectedly becomes a star of a TV network show ‘Supper at Six’. She rejects demands of the company network concerning expected mode of dress and presentation and builds an enormous following teaching women ‘lessons in chemistry’ and inspires her live and TV audiences to ‘follow your dream’. Elizabeth simply gets

ABSOLUTELY AND FOREVER
AUTHOR: ROSE TREMAIN
Rose Tremain is an 80 year old, English author, she has received a glittering array of awards and recognition. In 2020, she received “Dame” status for her services to writing. She has written many books, her break through novel was Restoration, this was a historical novel, but she has used many other genres. A personal favourite of mine is a novel called “The Colour”, this led me to recommend her new novel , “Absolutely and Forever” , as our choice for book club this month.
This novel, which may be autobiographical , is a coming of age novel about unrequited love(or obsessive infatuation). The main character, Marianne is a child of the 50/60s and our group felt that it captured the period well ,and evoked many memories, and discussion about this time for us all.
Marianne is 15 at the start of this book ,and the language ,cleverly, portrays a lot of her teenage angst. We follow and experience, through Tremain’s exceptional writing, Marianne’s travels to London, Paris ,Italy and
Discussions included past and future events and outings – a very full programme including a visit to Trevarrian ten pin bowling alley next week!
We discussed arrangements for the D Day commemorations and the Crantock Heritage weekend. This month’s competition, ‘Remembering Our Mothers’ was won by Juliette Weller with Jane Ham runner -up and Maggie Billing in third place. They all produced wonderful, well-presented memories.
Next month’s speaker will be the manager of Newquay Foodbank on Tuesday 9th April at 2.00 p.m.
on with and through all that is thrown at her.
There are many quirky characters and a beloved dog in this delightful book which will have many readers go through a whole range of emotions. It is funny, wise, upsetting, heartwarming and poignant and a story which zips along. The majority of readers in the group thoroughly enjoyed this book choice which offered much for discussion and would heartily recommend it.
A review found on the literaturelust.com website sums it up: Think ‘Me Too’ but move it back sixty years and delete the ability to fight the problem publicly Add a character who isn’t strident or whiny Thrown in the fact that injustices are righted by one woman’s unrelenting pursuit of her passion and you’ve got a story that is perfectly timed to ignite the psyche of readers.
A TV mini series has been made and is currently showing on Apple TV+
Cornwall, and her journey through her relationships as she matures, and becomes older and wiser. The other characters in the book are also, just as vividly portrayed, and are equally ,interesting, eccentric and endearing.
It was felt that Rose Tremain is rooting her story in physical realities and her description is outstanding. There is a mix of sadness and humour in this book a tragedy wrapped in hilarity. It lets the extraordinary cast new light on the quotidian in an engaging and imaginative way. Some of our group felt that the book became more compelling as they read it, as they initially were a little frustrated with Marianne’s teenage self ,whist others enjoyed it from the outset, but the consensus was that this was a good read.
In conclusion, if you like a book that it cleverly written which explores human relationships, and that makes you laugh and feel sad at the same time, then this may be the book for you. Overall our group really enjoyed this book.

Anther very successful Story Café took place on the 20th March - examining the research into the Lost City of Langarrow or Langona, said to have been buried when a storm of unusual violence arose and continued blowing without intermitting its violence for one moment, for three days and nights. In that period, the hills of blown sand extending from Crantock to Perran were formed, burying the city, its churches and its inhabitants in a common grave.
Based on the evidence present by Dr Ben Dobsonshowed that it was very likely that there were a number of

Sadly, at this time of year we start to see hedgehogs admitted with injuries caused by gardening accidents. So we are asking all the gardeners out there to think Hedgehog please!
Strimmers can cause devastating injuries, hedgehogs will hear a strimmer but as their natural fear defence is to curl, not to run, they often get caught by the strimmer. If you have an area of long grass or bramble that you wish to strim, please check the base of the area for hedgehogs (or other animals) before beginning work. A few minutes really could save a life.
We also see a lot of caustic burn cases at this time of year (4 in one week alone). Whilst we are not certain of the cause, we would urge caution when using products such as weedkiller, cleaning fluids and fertiliser in the garden, especially if you know you have visiting hedgehogs.
Hedgehogs will be much more active over the next few months as breeding season begins, do get in touch if you have any concerns or questions about hedgehogs.
Last year, we admitted our first hoglet on 31st May will it be earlier or later this year?

CRANTOCK MEMORY CAFE
Our March meeting seemed very busy! We greeted lots of new faces this month along with many of our usual members. The importance of our monthly catch ups should never be underestimated for clients and their carers alike, and our volunteers are always available to greet members as they arrive to sign in.
Our first session was introduced by Di and she welcomed Nikki Ridgment to the group. Nikki is a Kenpo Chi Kung practitioner who visited us last year. Nikki’s session was based around gentle exercises and breathing, in particular for the hands, arms and upper body – all the more wonderful as we were able to undertake all the exercises from our chairs! And of course all the exercises could be transferred to the home environment so we could practice them from the comfort of our armchairs. It is important to keep active and the calming physical and breathing exercises enabled us to improve our muscle tone and core strength without causing stress or the danger of damaging ourselves.
Tea at three was served promptly with a selection of yummy cakes and a mug of hot tea. This interlude provides us with time to chat, and catch up. This month Kirsten from our NHS team was able to join us and used the opportunity to catch up with some of the clients and their carers she sees in her clinics and on home visits to enquire whether she was able to improve their service requirements. It is good that Kisten is able to join us every few months. Kirsten is also able to refer clients to our Memory Café.
In session two we were challenged to a music quiz - we always enjoy the musical part of our Memory Cafes as we all love to sing along and try to remember the titles of the songs and who sang them - of course this always encourages much laughter and chat from guests! The melodies took many of us back to our teenage years with the hits of those times.
Three o’clock came all too soon and it was time for us to go home again.
We look forward to meeting up again on Monday 15th April at 2pm ready to do it all again. New members, who have a degree of memory loss, are always welcome to come along with their carers so please do phone Di for a chat if you would like to find our more about our Memory Café.

RELUCTANT SPRING
The Spring will surely come again.
Storms have destroyed the reluctant daffodils, and scattered fragile blossoms fighting for the sun and muddied the fields knee-deep, while song-birds hide silent in the dripping trees, and all await the return of Spring.
But for some the Spring will never come, who starve in the forgotten wars, the millions foodless on Somali deserts, or caught in endless Yemen wars, or hopeless on the baked and barren Sudan sands.
Medieval hatred flames the Gaza plains and leaves the people starving.
And all the while the hopeless grinding of the Madman’s War.... No.
There are no signs of Spring.
The Tales of Jinx and Minx
Monthly greetings from your cats-about-the-town Jinx and Minx and our support staff member Spen who continues to see to our every need and wellbeing. Not a great deal of newsworthy activity has occurred over the previous month except perhaps the saga of the recliner ordered from Amazon as Spen’s armchair was getting most uncomfortable. Both cats like to spend time on Spen’s lap and his constant fidgeting to get comfortable meant that we cats were getting disturbed just as we had settled down! So, using a well-known mail order firm a suitable replacement was ordered and in a couple of days a large cardboard box arrived. Upon being opened it proved to be the back of the chair! No instructions, no invoice or any paperwork! Spen decided to wait a few days to see if the other part of the chair turned up, but no luck! It was decided that the service from the mail order company was not very satisfactory, so the chair back was repacked for returning and taken away by Spen’s housekeeper to be taken to the collection point in Newquay. A few days later a huge box was delivered which proved to be the other half of the chair! A phone call was made to the housekeeper and she fortunately she still had the chairback at home. The chair back was duly returned and fitted to the chair base! So far Jinx and Minx have not had the opportunity to test the new chair out for comfort or the chairs material resistance to claw cleaning!
If you are lucky enough to be owned by a cat it will soon be apparent that cats have a variety of ways of communicating with their human beings and one main source of signals is the cats’ tail, except for Manx cats who are tailless. Other tailless cats are the Japanese Bobtail which is said to bring its owner good luck and is a popular subject for ceramic ornaments, the Kurilian Bobtail which is a native cat of the Kuril Islands between the North Pacific and Sea of Okhotsk off Siberia, and the Mekong Bobtail which was named after the Mekong River which flows through China, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. The Mekong Bobtail, though not a well-known species in the western world is said to be agile and having a friendly personality. Bobtail cat’s native to the USA have been bred and are said to be intelligent, alert and happy to be among people.
The UK Manx cat is a well-known breed and is said to have lost its tail in an accident on Noah’s Ark! It is a cat native to
THE NIGHT SKY IN APRIL
dsjp
Comet 12P/Pons-Brooks continues to brighten in the western sky, though sadly by early April it will be too close to the setting Sun to see it at its brightest. Still, it may be worth a look as it sits right between Mercury and Jupiter in the evening twilight low in the west just after sunset around April 1st.
The total solar eclipse on the 8th is not generally visible from the UK, but as far west as we are here, it looks like the Moon may take a little bite out of the Sun just as it sets. If the weather is favourable I will be at Cubert playground around 8pm to get a good view of the western horizon!
The Lyrid meteor shower will peak late on the 22nd / early 23rd, though a bright waxing gibbous Moon will interfere somewhat this year. The Lyrids are noted for leaving brief trails behind them as they streak across the sky. As always, just sit back and look up.
Clear skies.
The Gustory Starman
the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea. In reality its lack of tail is a natural mutation.
The American Pixie Bobcat is another breed of cat without a long tail but it has extra toes on one or more paws which is known as Polydactylism. One of the most unusual tails to be found on cats is the tail found on the American Ringtail. No other cat possesses such a unique tail which is carried in a flexible curl over its back or along the flank. If you are owned by a cat life will be interesting and rewarding because a cat’s tail is one of the best barometers of its emotional state.
The signs are:
Tail flicking from side to side – cat mildly irritated.
Tail thumping on the floor – a sign of frustration or a warning. Tail low to the ground and flicking – a sign that the cat is feeling aggressive.
Strong lashing movements of the tail – cat not feeling happy and may become aggressive and could lash out.
Tail with hair fluffed out – cat suffering from increased anxiety and feeling threatened.
Tail arched over back – the cat is poised ready to strike.
Tail tucked between the legs – cat is expressing submission. A horizontal or low to the floor tail – cat Is feeling calm and relaxed.
Cats tail erect with a curl at the tip – cat is in a friendly mood and wants to make contact.
Tail pointing straight up and vibrating – cat is quite literally quivering with joy and excitement.
There are other ways in which a cat can communicate such as growls, hissed, chirps etc and if you are owned by a cat, you will soon learn to interpret their sounds and postures. Other means of communication include eye contact, smell and touch. You may with the passage of time learn to speak ‘cat’, but a precautionary word on ‘cat speak’, if your cat is busy clawing your new furniture or curtains etc don’t shout at it – by making a hissing or spitting sounds and firmly saying no the cat will get the message!
Well, that’s all for this month. Spen, Jinx and minx hope you find our feline fables entertaining.
Until we meet again and may your God go with you.
Jinx and Minx
PS: you know you are a cat person when you sit ton the floor to watch the TV while the cats lounge on the sofa!
