FROM THE EDITORIAL TEAM
February has been a busy month around the village - the Cherry Tree has finally has its additional layer of soil and been reseeded so we expect that a luscious layer of new grass will appear very soon. The 3 diseased ash trees on the Round Garden hedges have been felled and it likely that several others will be removed after the nesting season is over.
March will be equally busy with our annual village tidy, An Evening with Johnny Cowling, the SLSC Spring Clean, a BIG Beach Clean, Story Café, the Methodist Church Coffee Morning and our usual clubs and activities and with the Easter holidays on their way everything will be buzzing!
Following the last high tide the dunes are in a very precarious state again and likely to sudden collapse - the RNLI advice is to keep at least 50m (164ft) away from the base of the sand dunes. If you witness a collapse, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard and fire service. Please do not put yourself in danger and attempt to rescue. Please do read our SLSC report about the dangers on Page 19.
Congratulations to Paul Benney a founding member of Crantock SLSC who at the recent 2024 Heroes of The Surf Awards, hosted by Surf Life Saving GB, , who was awarded the prestigious title of Life Member.
Paul’s journey in surf life saving spans over 50 years, marking a career filled with commitment, passion, and invaluable contributions to the safety and education within the surfing community.
WILDFLOWER MEADOW APPEAL
As you may know we would like to turn the old glebe field into a wildflower meadow the cost would be about £2000 and as yet we only received 2 donations since our last appeal, we feel this would enhance the village and would be most grateful for any further contributions as we will be unable to proceed without further funds, payment can be made directly into the account Lloyds Bank 30-96-03 Flower meadow a/c no. 00944915.

LONDON MARATHON 2024 UPDATE
9 weeks to go.
Yes, as I write this I realise that in 9 weeks this whole adventure will be done and hopefully I will have crossed the finishing line and be the proud owner of my medal.
Absolutely gutted that Hannah has had to postpone her latest challenge but know that we will all be able to support her next year. Pleased to hear she is on the mend though.
Anyway, training has ramped up beyond anything I could have imagined and still away to go. I have found the cycle path between Goonhavern and Perranporth a great place for runs of about an hour have been to the Camel trail for longer runs. Slightly more interesting than the treadmill. 8 mile run now in the bag, it feels unreal actually saying it when I think of my start point in October, when a minute was difficult.
The reason for this exciting journey keeps me motivated and focused with every single penny raised going to such a worthy cause. Thank you all once again for your ongoing support. Always grateful for any new support as are Leukaemia Care.
Having toppled off a bench early in January it was clear that loosing 3+ weeks training what not conducive to sensible preparation for a marathon so Children’s Hospice SW were happy to defer my place until 2025.
All donations to my Just Giving fundraising page are automatically go to CHSW meaning that the charity benefits straight away from the money raised from the C Bay Cream Tea, Auction at The Cornishman, the Preloved Sale and the many donations kindly given.

CRANTOCK VILL AGE HALL
VILLAGE HALL MONTHLY UPDATE
As far as developments are concerned, the EV charging point has now been installed and as soon as we fix a few technical points we will install the appropriate signage for instructions on the site and also publish them in this magazine and on Facebook.
The Building work is now approaching it’s conclusion and hopefully by the time of the April magazine the site will be back to normal and we can then concentrate on a big tidy up.
The Booking calendar now has empty slots on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for the first time in ages should anyone be interested in booking any regular classes.
At this point can I thank one of the residents on the new estate for telephoning me and pointing out there were two/three youths using scrambling bikes on the field on
Saturday afternoon of the 27th January. I was able to go up to the field and explain the hard work that goes into maintaining it for potential cricket and other sports and social activities and they then refrained from cycling in a very polite manner. Clearly the Committee can’t be watching over the Village Hall and Field 24 hours a day so for residents to keep an eye out does help.
Very little else to report this month, other than the Village Hall Draw numbers have held up at the start of the draw year. Perhaps you too could be a potential winner if you have not yet joined. Just contact me on the number below.

CRANTOCK METHODIST CHURCH
As Christians, we are in the season of Lent, which began on 14th February and I wonder if you enjoyed the traditional pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, 13th February? For Christians, Lent is a time to remember when Jesus went into the desert to fast and pray before beginning his work for God. Jesus was tempted several times by Satan but was able to resist. Lent allows Christians to remember Jesus's fasting in the desert. It is a time of giving things up and a test of self-discipline, and a time to remember the amazing love that God has for each one of us that we celebrate at Easter.
Unbounded Love – God’s love doesn’t stay in the lines is the Methodist Church’s theme for Lent 2024. The title is taken from Charles Wesley’s hymn, Love Divine, which is all about a kind of love that cannot be contained, that works in our lives and in our world to free us and heal us.
The first verse reads:
Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. Jesu, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation, enter every trembling heart.

At Easter, we celebrate the incredible love that God has for every one of us - love so amazing, so pure and boundless that God ’s son Jesus died on the cross for us but overcame death and rose around! God ’s love is not bound to human understanding and is a gift to us if we so wish to invite God into our lives.
We look forward to celebrating God’s abundant love with you over this Lent and Easter season as we see you around Crantock or pop into our church events such as the Easter Coffee Morning on Thursday 21st March and our Easter Day service on Sunday 31st March at 10am.

ST CARA NTOC CHURCH
A Prayer in Time of Transition
Dear Lord, our God and Father, in this time of Transition, give us your eyes to see Your presence in our lives, ears to listen to Your will, lips to speak Your words, and hands to do your work. Grant us grace and go before us, as we speak Your Holy Spirit’s counsel as we live in community during this time, and as we prepare for the arrival of the new priest in our midst.
We pray this through Jesus Christ, and for the sake of his kingdom, in sure and certain hope of Your promises to us.

EASTER LILIES
Each year at Easter time Crantock Church is filled with the scent of Longiflorum or as we know them Easter lilies. The windows and the top of the rood screen become home to over 100 blooms, each one placed in memory of a loved one. The name of each person is put in a card and placed near the pulpit.
The cost of the lilies will be the same as last year at £3.50 a stem. Each stem usually carries two to four blooms. It is always difficult to predict the cost. Any profit made will go towards the maintenance of Crantock Church. Any shortfall will be covered by our small flower fund. It is not a requirement to be a member of the church to have a lily included. We invite everyone in the village to take this opportunity to remember loved ones.
If you wish to order lilies, a list for names is on the lectern in the church or please call:
Sue Dennett 01637 830928 Email suedennett44@gmail.com by Sunday 10th March. All Lilies are in place by Easter Saturday morning and remain for up to two weeks for all to enjoy. The church is open every day for private prayer. Notice of services will be on the Lychgate notice board.
Amen 11

016/24 Minutes:
RESOLVED: The minutes of the Full Council Meeting held on 10 th January 2024, as circulated, were approved as a true record & signed.
017/24 Public Participation:
The applicants for the proposed development at Atlantic View spoke in support of their application. The chalets will be demolished and a minimum 1, maximum 2 dwellings will be built in replacement. The land will be sold with planning permission. It is the owner ’s intention that the design of the houses will be sympathetic to the surrounding landscape. Councillors commented that it was difficult to comment on the proposal without a proposed design.
The applicants for the proposed siting of two shepherds huts on land East of Bryher spoke in support of their application. The plans previously presented to the PC have been altered slightly to minimise the hardstanding and the development is designed to be reversed. The applicants also confirmed that they have no intention to develop their other field between West Pentire and Crantock.
018/24 Cornwall Council Report:
ADH advised that Cllr. Louis Gardner has expressed dissatisfaction that the 20 is Plenty Scheme is being rolled out in Crantock early. This is part of the Community Network Highway Scheme and ADH will respond accordingly. PH and the Clerk gave a report on the meeting held to discuss the revised highway scheme. The 20mph speed limit will start at the entrance of the village and run out to the build out at West Pentire. A permanent speed visor will be installed at the entrance to the village and the scheme also includes works to improve the pedestrian footway at the top of Halwyn Hill. The statutory public consultation will commence shortly and it is hoped that the works will be completed before the summer.

a] Installation of New Benches & Community Chest Application: The Community Chest grant has been awarded and paid. The PC now needs to decide how many benches to order. A discussion ensued. PH advised that the triangle has now been cleared. Thanks were expressed to Mark Dearlove and the volunteers who had undertaken the work. There is photographic evidence showing the area being previously used for seating. A local resident has offered to pay for the installation of a memorial bench there. A letter had been received from a local resident asking to use the space as a parking area. However, it was discussed that the due to a telegraph pole and BT manhole, the area isn ’t suitable. 021/24 Parish Councillor Reports:
• AH advised that there are safety concerns over the dunes and the beach signage is being altered. There will be a Beach Safety Group Meeting imminently to discuss the season ahead. The lifeguard service is being extended for the forthcoming season which is welcome news. Coverage will begin at Easter, there will then be a weekend service until the 4 th May when the fulltime service starts. This will end on 29 th September and there will then be a weekend service until the end of October.
• The potholes at Trevella Corner have been partially repaired. The quality of the workmanship is extremely poor.
• KM gave a report of the recent Village Hall Meeting. The extension should be completed in a couple of months; an electric charging point will be installed; the car park will be tarmacked at a cost of £22k; a height restriction barrier will be installed; the summer overflow car park will operate again this summer.
• SR once again reported the lack of road markings on the Plains triangle. The Clerk advised that she regularly reports this but the Council says there is no issue.
• The bus shelter in the centre of the village has suffered minor damage due to the overgrown hedge/trees behind it. The National Trust has tidied up the area and further work will be done when the other tree work is undertaken in a couple of weeks. The repairs can then be undertaken.

CRANTOCK ROWING CLUB UPDATE
You will be forgiven for thinking that the Crantock Rowing Club has not been up to very much over the winter. However, contrary to this the club have been extremely busy, making sure our lovely gig is fully maintained inside and out to keep it safe, sea worthy and looking stunning as she glides through the water!
Over the last few weeks the clubs maintenance crew, have sanded her down, primed her and given her many a top coat of paint.
A huge Crantock Rowing Club thank you has to go to everyone who has had a hand in repairing her and painting her in her new colours, as well as naming her, as well as the key maintenance of the oars and trolleys etc.
A very special thank you goes to Lisa Cobley and Karen Turton who spent over 30 hours painting her.
Our beautiful gig has now been officially renamedGannel Maid. Hope you all agree, she’s looking pretty spectacular.
As is customary prior to her being rowed for the first time as Gannel Maid, we held a small informal naming ceremony, led by our Chair - Rob, down on the beach. We will be holding a more formal ceremony very soon, so look out for announcements on Facebook, as we’d love to see as many of you down the beach as possible.
The club rowing members are all busy training, luckily at times, in the comfort of Kernow Strength & Conditioning gym, who’ve kindly provided us access to their erg rowing trainers to help us build up our stamina whilst the boat has undergone maintenance. In addition Crantock Surf Life Saving Club has involved us in weekly circuit training, to help us get or keep fit. We really do need all the stamina we can muster, as both ladies and men's crews are entering our first race in March.

ON THE BEAC H
MARCH UPDATE FROM CRANTOCK SLSC
Crantock Surf Life Saving Club recently attended the SLSGB National Conference 2024 at Sandy Park, Exeter. Six coaches, trainers/assessors, and committee members from the club attended the conference to keep themselves updated with the latest research in search and rescue and lifesaving. The conference provided an opportunity for attendees to learn from friends in other clubs from across the UK and colleagues from the RNLI and Coastguard. The training gained from the conference will be shared with the rest of the teams, ensuring that the club stays up-to-date with the latest practices and techniques.
In the evening the conference hosted the 2024 National Heroes of the Surf Awards, where Crantock's very own, and one of the founding members, Paul Benney, was awarded Life Member for services to Lifesaving. Paul said "l must say how proud l am to be nominated for Life Membership of SLSGB. Since our conception in 1986, Crantock SLSC has become one of the most successful Lifesaving clubs within the association, where we patrol our beach beside professional lifeguards. The club has had over the years members representing junior and senior level Cornwall, England and Great Britain; we have competed at local, National, European and World events putting this small but mighty club well and truly on the Lifesaving map. Seeing the club grow and mature in this way makes me so proud, I often sit upon the dunes looking down on the nippers and parents, the juniors, and senior members playing, learning, catching waves or competing at flags - the smile on my face says it all'.
In addition to attending the national conference, the club also welcomed members of the Gig Rowing club to their winter circuit training sessions. The sessions take place every Friday in the Village Hall from 7-8 pm and will continue until Easter. Members of the club have also been pool swimming and braving the wind and rain on the Gannel too!
As spring and summer time approaches, we would like to remind everyone of the significant dangers posed by unstable sand dunes. The club has witnessed people climbing and digging in some very dangerous areas, despite sections of the dunes regularly collapsing. Sand avalanches are a real risk, and it's unlikely that anyone buried would be found alive. Therefore, if anyone gets injured in the vicinity of the dunes, witnesses should call 999 and ask for the coastguard. This will prompt a multiagency response with the fire service due to the nature of the dunes. Any rescue response in the vicinity of the dunes poses extreme risk.
We're also pleased to announce that we are able to purchase a new trailer thanks to the generous grant from the Cubert and Crantock Solar Fund. The changes to the sand dunes have limited access to the clubhouse, and this second -hand trailer will make it easier for the club to move our kit around, especially when it comes to getting large equipment in and out of the clubhouse.

CRANTOCK WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
Crantock Women’s Institute has been in existence for seventy one years and our usual meeting was followed by a celebratory party.
Gail Wilson acted as substitute President of our February meeting and began the meeting by welcoming a potential new recruit.
Since the previous meeting we had an enjoyable lunch at The Lakeside restaurant in Newquay and many members participated in an instructional introduction to lino printing provided by Linda Hallwood. Members were informed by Lynne, Rosie and Sue Stevens about forthcoming events and Sylvia Fellows won the regular competition, this time based upon Valentine’s Day gifts.
Once necessary financial and business items were discussed an enjoyable beetle drive, with prizes, took place, ably organised by Sue and Sonia.
We then enjoyed a fantastic spread and our next meeting takes place on Tuesday 12th March

READING GROUP BY BOOK WORM
From Swedish writer Fredrik Backman (A Man called Ove) comes Anxious People.
A cast of diverse characters, this endearing tale of an inept bank robber turned hostage taker is set in a Swedish apartment up for sale. Whilst eight strangers are viewing it.
Funny, painful, dark, moving, it is about heavy topics set in a light hearted way. it is mad and gets madder and madder as the story develops, but it all makes sense eventually. It perfectly describes the life and turmoil of different people, caught up in a difficult situation. This is a comedy about a crime that never takes place, a would-be bank robber, and eight anxious strangers, who have more in common than they ever imagined.
Taster: The truth is that if people were as happy as they look on the internet, they wouldn’t spend so much time on the Internet. Because no one who’s having a really good day spends half of it taking pictures of themselves. Anyone can nurture a myth about their life if they have enough manure, so if the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, that’s probably because it is full of shit. The stupidest thing people who have everything think about people who have nothing that it’s pride that stops
America, present day, Tori Kovac, caring for her dying father, finds a letter containing a shocking revelation. Setting out to learn the truth, Tori's journey takes her to a remote seaside village in Japan where she must confront the demons of the past to pave a way for redemption.
Review
As a group we all agreed this is a beautifully written book that is meant to be savoured and enjoyed, so poignant and emotional a lush masterful exploration of the indomitable human spirit set against the backdrop of post -World War 2 Japan. The author's exquisite and emotionally satisfying tale spans a cultural divide to marry a mothers courageous determination to protect her daughter at any cost with a daughter's quest for the truth. We had a fulfilling discussion and agreed we would recommend this book .
them asking for help. That’s very rarely the case. Unfortunately most people would get more sympathy from their colleagues and bosses at work if they show up looking rough one day and say ‘ I’m hung over, than if they say I’m suffering from anxiety’. A very relevant story, about messy feeling, messy lives. Funny, enjoyable, witty, sad, crazy, complex, about broken people and their lives and consequences of actions taken.
Readers Comments:
Overall our readers loved this book and it comes highly recommended.
Full of pathos as well as humour. Well crafted and written. Vivid descriptions.
Laugh out loud humour. Thought provoking with lots of twists and turns. A funny book, like being at a comedy club. Well rounded characters. Quirky, wry observations. Clever storyline, well observed humour physical as well as verbal. Heavy topics written in a light hearted way A great book

CRANTOCK BEACH CALENDAR 2024
We would like to thank everyone who has purchased one of the 2024 Crantock Beach calendars – the idea for the calendar started about 5 years ago by Charlotte Cox [who some of you may remember from the Tea Rooms at Treago Farm]. The profit from the sales of the calendars has always been donated to Crantock groups and this year it has been allocated as follows.
Crantock Heritage Group Our Heritage Group was formed several years ago to research the village history and presents a series of Crantock related Story Cafes in the village at regular intervals. This June we plan to hold a Heritage Week focusing on St Carantoc Church.
Crantock Baby and Toddler Group has enabled parents to meet up for a coffee and chat once a week. With a regular attendance of over 30 children there is always a need for new toys to inspire the group.
West Pentire Defibrillator In 2023 The Bowgie and C Bay Bistro realised the need to have a defibrillator at West Pentire, the nearest one to West Pentire is over a mile away and set about raising funds to purchase this vital lifesaving equipment. The Calendar Fund made a donation of £500 towards the purchase, so it seemed important to help towards the annual maintenance costs.
Crantock Gig Rowing Club Also, in 2023 Crantock Gig Rowing Club was reformed [I say reformed, but no one really knows a great deal about the original Rowing Club however it is safe to say “ it was back in the day”! The original gigs were used to guide boats down the Gannel,
and as many of you will know the Gannel was an important port for large cargo boats and boat building –however the silting of the Gannel prior to 1850 meant that these large boats could no longer access the quays along the Gannel and Newquay then became the dominant port. What started an idea soon gathered momentum and with a generous donation from one of our locals ‘The Brabyn’ was purchased from Padstow and brought to its new home in Crantock. The gig was renamed Gannel Maid and is now in regular use by the enthusiastic members of the club – their first competitive race is in March! Now with over a hundred members, a committee and huge input from locals, a thriving club is evolving. The donation will help towards the purchase of safety equipment.
Crantock Surf Life Saving Club Our Surf Life Saving Group will also receive a donation to support their vital and dedicated work throughout the year in providing out of hours safety cover on Crantock Beach.
The Christmas Lights Fund will also get a share to support the purchase of lights, additional waterproof boxes and some lighted reindeer to keep our village look gorgeous at Christmas time.
Finally special thanks Charlotte and her mum Ann who work so hard to make the Crantock Beach FB page and its members the success that it is and for their continued support in all things relating to Crantock village, to the local businesses who have sponsored the calendar and help sell the calendars. Every single calendar purchase has made a big difference so thank you all.
CRANTOCK HERITAGE GROUP
Our 2024 Story Café series continues with an in depth look at The Lost City of Crantock - history relates o the legend of a city buried beneath Crantock sand dunes. Is this fact or fiction? Ben Dobson presents his research into this subject and we look forward to his findings. Tickets are on sale at the village shop.
Plans are well underway for a Crantock Heritage event during the weekend of Friday 28th - 30th June, starting with an evening concert Falmouth Community Choir at St Carantoc Church, Open Church, a look at the Church Yard, Bell Ringing and a village walk over the weekend followed by a somewhat ghoulish look at local shipwrecks and drownings local to Crantock.. More details to follow.
For those of you interested in long gone local families may enjoy this book written by Ben - Edward Lawer Johns was a member of a very large family who lived in Crantock until his death in 1905, the book follows the fortunes of the Johns family, and includes details of the Martyn, Prater, Chegwidden and Stephens families.
These families who all made a significant contribution to the rich and varied heritage of the development of Crantock are long gone but their names are long gone from our village.
An excellent read and priced at £10 copies of the book are available to purchase from the village shop.

CRANTOCK MEMORY CAFE
FEBRUARY 2024
At our Memory Café this month we welcomed our special guest singer local vocalist Rachel Best. Rachel has visited us before and with her beautiful voice and great selection of songs from the past which we all relate to - just perfect for our group who love music and singing. It wasn’t long until everyone was singing along and tapping in time to the music. It was wonderful to see some of our guests dancing together and enjoying the freedom which music can give, unlocking inhibitions which music seems to do and enabling even the quietest of guests to feel comfortable singing and enjoying the session.
Sadly, our first session was over all too soon but we were ready for a thirst quenching cup of tea and slice or two of cake! It gives our volunteers the opportunity to chat with guests and their carers, to catch up on news and relax in the comfortable setting our Village Hall provides. This is an important part of our Memory Café and it affords the carers time to talk to each other. Our committee members are always available to help pass on useful information about available services and sources of help.
Our second session is usually an interactive game and this month the committee had chosen Bird Bingo. All our guests enjoy playing games and seem to really enjoy playing bingo whether it is the competitive challenge of recognizing a bird first or winning a prize - who knows! However, the session went so quickly and all too soon it was time to pack away and leave for home.
We are fortunate to have a group of helpers who give up their time to make our Memory Café the success that is undoubtably is. Careful planning by the committee chaired by Di Dumpleton creates a relaxed and happy atmosphere.
We look forward to meeting up again at 2pm on the 18th March - our Memory Café invited guest is Nikki Ridgment. Nikki is a trained Martial Arts practitioner and will be working with us on Chi Kung - repetitions of sets of movements and breathing exercises designed to help us relax from the comfort of our chairs.
Have a good month.

A CURVING WORLD
Ruler, triangle, quadrangle, roadway: straight is a human thing.
But see the river winding to the sea, each day covering new looping courses, the waves curling, tipping white on green, the pulsing tides rippling the sands. And see the rolling hills, the wind-smoothed duneswhy! – and every leaf and every tree and creatures everywhere, of flesh or feather or fur or down, so all is curved, growing or fading, (as all things must), moving to nature’s perfection; the sphere.
There on the furthest reaches of the eye, across the blue seas, at the shallow bow of the horizon, see the segment Arc of our tiny globe, our pebble in the curving sands of time. dsjp
The Tales of Jinx and Minx
Monthly greeting from Jinx and Minx your friendly catsabout-the- town not forgetting Spen our loyal support staff member and general guardian of our welfare. It has been 9 years since we cats arrived chez Spen as two just weaned kittens not knowing where we were, not what was happening to us, or why we were suddenly in a strange new world. Our first reaction to being released into the household was to hide under the cooker in the kitchen and no amount of wheedling would make us emerge until hunger lured us out! Once out and feed we were imprisoned in the summer house with food and a litter tray for a fortnight until we gradually got used to Spen and then were allowed out into the world! We settled into the house with the occasional accident behind the settee and delighted in cleaning our claws and the wallpaper much to Spen’s annoyance. We spend hours exploring the gardens and using the summer house as a refuge from sun and rain and tearing at the wood as a method of cleaning our claws.
Although we cats are only 9 years since we were kittens our human equivalent age is 60 years!! At 3 years old a cat is roughly equivalent to a human in their early 40’s, from then on, each cat years corresponds to about 3 human years. On the subject of the longevity of a cat’s life one of Spen’s cats called Merlin clocked up 23 years and even then was put to sleep as life became unbearable! Merlin was actually the runt of the litter, but he was over 100 years old in human terms although he was put to sleep, he still clung to life! As a human being is owned by a cat such as Spen is owned by Jinx and Minx a way of communicating develops and as time goes by it’s possible to hold a conversation with your cat! A cat can issue a number of different sounds such as hissing, growling, miaowing and purring. Hissing and growling accompanied by a flash of teeth and claws are warnings to trespassers on a cat’s territory to stay clear or to a human that gets too close. Miaows - rarely used between adult cats- are used by kittens to signal to their mothers. A domestic cat will miaow to indicate its presence. Short and high pitched chirps signal excitements, or a plea for something usually in the presence of an empty food bowl first thing in the morning! Low pitched sounds express displeasure or a demand! Anxiety can be expressed by rapid,
THE NIGHT SKY IN MARCH
The seasons are starting to change once again, with the Spring equinox on the 20th and your clocks going forward an hour on the 31st. And with the changing of the seasons come the changing of the constellations. Some, like the Plough and the 'W' shape of Cassiopeia remain all year round as they lie close to the celestial pole. But Orion, as a winter favourite, will regress lower into the evening twilight each week as Spring progresses. Jupiter is still visible for most of the night, bright in the south, and on the 24th Mercury reaches its greatest western elongation. This is the time it appears furthest from the Sun in the evening sky, so it is easier to spot. Look for a medium-faint 'star' that does not twinkle low in the west as darkness falls.
Comet 12P/Pons–Brooks will be an evening comet in March. It is uncertain how bright it will become, but there's a good chance it will brighten into naked -eye visibility if you do not have binoculars or a small telescope. It will be located near Pegasus at the start of March, and end the month just south of Aries. Visit www.skyatnightmagazine.com/advice/comets -2024 for more precise details and a sky map.
On the 25th we have a slight partial eclipse of the moon. If you're up early - around 5.30am until sunrise you may notice the setting moon dim somewhat as it enters the Earth's penumbra - the area of partial shadow that surrounds the more obvious 'total' eclipse shadow.
Clear skies.
The Gustory Starman
intense and repeated sounds. Long drawn out cries and shrieks can indicate pain or fighting. Mating cats produce long wails known as caterwauls. A cat purrs as a usual sign of contentment but can purr as a way of comforting themselves when in pain or anxious.
The longer you are owned by a cat the more adept you will become at interpreting the various noises a cat can produce and don’t be surprised that if you ask a cat a question you get a response! Cats can also exhibit body language using a combination of ears, eyes and whiskers. The ears and whiskers work together so when the ears are erect, facing forward and the whiskers are to the front or sides, the cat is alert and interested in what is going on. When the ears are rotated back with forward facing whiskers means that the cat is in an aggressive mood. When a cat I scared the ears are out to the sides and the whiskers flat against the cheeks. Beware of a cat’s ability to lash out with extended claws and open jaws. Painful bites and scratches can be the result! Never approach a strange cat as the cat’s reaction could be one of self-defence and of fear. Spen went to pet a cat sunning itself on a garden wall. The cat lashed out inflicting scratches on the back of Spen’s hand, which on the advice of a nursing friend present at the time meant a quick trip to A & E at Treliske for an anti-tetanus injection! Cats do not like eye contact which is one reason a cat will make towards anybody in a room who ignores him, to a cat this is normal friendly behaviour. Some people have a phobia concerning cats [the emperor Napoleon was terrified of cats!]. once the cat is used to those around him eye contact becomes less of a problem. A cat’s eyes when dilated can be a sin of interest or excitement, or fear and aggression.
I Hope my literary efforts regarding our feline friend have helped you to a better understanding of our cats. Until next time sayonara May your God go with you.
Jinx and Minx
PS: you know you are a cat person when you always share your sweets with kitty – usually a KitKat or a bag of sugar mice!

News from Cubert School
This half term our children have attended lots of sporting events in the community, and we are so proud of all they have achieved. Well done to you all. An indoor athletics tournament was attended by teams from Years 3 and 4, each pupil took part in one field event and one track event then the whole team took part in a relay race. The events included seated chest push, standing long jump and speed bounce and the track events were one lap sprint, three lap long distance and the obstacle course. The Year 3 team came 5th overall and the Year 4 Team came 2nd overall. All the pupils behaved superbly and were excellent competitors.
The cross country event at Newquay Sports centre was successful for our Key Stage 2 children claiming 6th, 11th and 12th place in Year 4, and a 1st and 10th for our Year 6
pupils.
The Sports Hall Athletics Competition was also a great success. Our pupils showed off their skills and gave it their all, and their politeness, behaviour and sportsmanship were praised by all who were there. The competition was tough, but the team from Year 5 came 6th, and our Year 6 team came 8th.
Looking ahead to the second half of the Spring Term, preparations have begun for the lower Key Stage 2 performance of The Plastic Pirates. We look forward to seeing their singing and acting skills before the Easter holidays.
Thank you to all the parents, carers and the wider community for all the support we receive which makes the above events possible, we couldn
