Letter from Executive Managing Director
CINEMA IS NOW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER!
Film is a spectacularly communal art form and the Gershman Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival (GPJFF) takes this celebration and building up of community seriously. Community building can seem to be an abstract concept, but at its core, it is the foundation for successful achievement towards perpetuating the GPJFF mission to educate and engage diverse Philadelphia communities, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, by presenting world-class film premieres, repertory cinema, and associated programs that are inspired by Jewish history, heritage, and values.
Through community support, we have been able to continue our mission when philanthropy is increasingly vital to our success. Amid the COVID-19 crisis and all the uncertainty that has come with it, we are now more confident than ever that GPJFF provides a robust platform to connect one with another. Cinema might seem like a small thing in a time like this, but there is power in film and community. When we are abiding by social distancing rules and staying at home to protect ourselves and others, loneliness and mental health become significant factors. GPJFF films and programs provide a conduit that relieves the feeling of isolation and loneliness. Therefore, the Festival is crucial and shows just how important the mission is, not only now but always.
The Festival is most grateful for the various streams of support from its board, staff, volunteers, and donors to those who attend and contribute to the communityÕs creative fabric. The generosity of our audience is heartwarming and our appreciation is abundant.
As we see a shift with viewing habits from our audience, ticket sales make up less than the revenue needed to sustain GPJFF. We seek and rely on the generosity of the community to help the organization carry on. At this time, we ask you to consider contributing to the organization. Whether through a Fall Fest sponsorship or an added donation to your ticket purchase, you are investing in your community and an organization whose mission is deeply rooted in perpetuating Jewish stories, culture, and life.
Through film, we recognize our common global existence and better understand and empathize with others as we begin to see the depth of their experiences, as well as the obstacles they may faceÑ whether literal walls or psychological and cultural barriers. Great films illuminate, and, in the process, they encourage compassion. In the best cases, they can transform us.
Thank you for your support, encouragement, and helping to make this 40th anniversary our most memorable and celebratory date!
With gratitude,
Kristen Evans Executive Managing Director
