Does art have the power to inspire social change? How do artists address the political, cultural, and societal issues affecting their communities? How can artists and activists work together to affect positive change in society?
In his book, Social Concern and Left Politics in Jewish American Art: 1880-1940, Matthew Baigell examines why so many generations of Jewish artistsÕ work advocated for a democratic and just society. From the wave of European Jewish immigrants settling in American cities at the turn of the 20th century to the artists working amid AmericaÕs entry into WWII, Baigell explains why such a high proportion of AmericaÕs leading artists embracing social issues were Jewish.
In this virtual artist showcase and panel, four Jewish artists will share their work and discuss how their art addresses contemporary social issues like democracy, systemic racism, gender inequality, global warming, and immigration. WeÕll learn if and how the artistsÕ Jewish heritage impacted their art and discuss whether the Jewish value of Tikkun Olam has informed their perspectives on art and advocacy.
