Meet Anna Parish,

Health SUPERHERO! Our Superhero of the the Month for April is Anna Parish. She is 11 years old and from Louisville, Kentucky. Anna has donated hours of her time and raised thousands of dollars to support organ donation. The reason Anna is passionate about organ donation is simple: she received a new liver thanks to a donor. Anna, you’re just a kid! Why did you need a new liver? When I was only 5 weeks old I caught a virus which made my liver sick. I had a surgery to extend the life of my liver but the doctors knew it would not last forever. The only cure for me was to get a new liver. What does it feel like when your liver isn’t working? I would have to miss school a lot for doctor’s appointments. I had trouble keeping up in school. I would itch all the time from my liver not working right, and eventually I got short of breath when I would try to keep up with my friends. When I was 8 years old the doctors put me on a list where I would have to wait for a new liver.

Fast Facts About Anna: Age: 11 Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky Superhero Quality I Want: To fly. Favorite subject: Social Studies Favorite Animal: Dogs (I have 3! 2 Labradors and a malshi-poo.) Favorite Sport: Swimming Favorite Movie: Harry Potter movies What I want to be when I grow up: An actress Hobbies: Doing hair, make-up and nails My heroes: Justin Bieber is my crush and my hero because he is very involved in Make-A-Wish and visiting sick kids in the hospital. He knows how much kids look up to him and he tries to pay it forward by lifting their spirits. I also look up to Jennifer Lawrence because she followed her dreams and is from my hometown, so she seems real to me.

That doesn’t sound very fun. So, did you get a new liver right away? No. The only way I could get a new liver is if someone had registered to be an organ donor before they died. There is a shortage of registered donors, so I had to wait 3 years to get a liver transplant. Wow! So what did you do in those three years? My family and I decided to get busy by helping to raise awareness for organ donation and- help kids like myself. Before the transplant I was on a swim team, played tennis and participated in drama classes. My first involvement with fundraisers came when I helped my swim team raise $6,500 for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Pediatric Liver Department. Our team swam laps to raise money. The following year I decided to help raise money by forming a team and walking for The American Liver Foundation. Team Anna raised $9,800! I became the Liver Champion and walked in Louisville and Cincinnati. That’s a lot of money! What did your friends think about it? In 5th grade a lot of my friends started to ask questions about my condition. They asked why I would miss school and why I was sick a lot. I met a few people who worked with Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates. KODA worked me to bring a science program to my school that taught my friends how their bodies work and how to stay healthy. It also talked about a subject that most kids do not know about and that is organ donation. Global Game Changers Vol. 13-1

and tissue donation and transplantation. KODA was formed to establish a statewide educational and procurement network. Their mission is to provide organ and tissues to those in need and to maintain a profound respect for those who gave. The Trust For Life’s Judge Charles Satterwhite Recipient Assistance Fund covers the expenses that the family does not have the resources to meet. Since 2001, the fund has been able to assist 418 recipients from 88 different counties around Kentucky with grants totaling nearly $300,000. Recipients have ranged in age from 3 months to 70 years old. Since their founding in 1923, Kosair Charities has changed the lives of hundreds of thousands of children by providing the highest quality health care for those who had nowhere else to turn. Through support from generous donors, children receive medical attention they desperately need and deserve. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital values transparency, collaboration with families and a dedication to finding the best care approaches. At their liver transplant center, they have performed more than 530 liver transplants since 1986. Transplant Facts More than 115,000 people in the United States are currently on the waiting list for a lifesaving organ transplant. One deceased donor can save up to 8 lives through organ donation and can save and enhance more than 100 lives through the lifesaving and healing gift of tissue donation. The first successful liver transplant and the first successful heart transplant were both in 1967! 90% of Americans support organ transplants, but only 30% know how to become donors! The liver is the largest organ in your body. It does more than 500 different things for your body. It transforms foods into energy, it cleans your blood, and helps you absorb fat! It helps your blood clot, so you don’t bleed, and helps you absorb medicines so you feel better faster!
