Meet Timyah Hall,

Education SUPERHERO! Our Back to School Superhero is Timyah Hall. We met Timyah through a fun program in Louisville, Kentucky, called Kindergarten Countdown. This program allows rising kindergartners (that means they start kindergarten this year) travel to all kinds of community organizations throughout the city. The kindergartners and a parent get a free pass to see all kinds of neat places and events. Here’s a quick list: Frazier History Museum Louisville Zoo StageOne Family Theatre YMCA’s Calypso Cove Walden Theatre Louisville Free Public Library Kentucky Science Center Kentucky Derby Museum Health Fair Louisville Slugger Field

Fast Facts About Timyah: Age: 5 Hometown: Louisville, Kentucky Superhero Quality I Want: To help others. Favorite subject: Math Favorite Animal: Zebra Favorite Movie: Disney’s Teen Beach Favorite TV Show: Spongebob What I want to be when I grow up: A ballerina Hobbies: Having tea parties and dressing up with my friends My heroes: My sister Nalani. She has autism.

Doesn’t that sound like so much fun? Well, it was! All the kids carried a special passport from the Global Game Changers that they got stamped every place they went. And our superhero Timyah received all ten stamps! WOW! She wanted to make sure that she was ready for kindergarten. Those of you who already go to school know that starting kindergarten is BIG. The Mayor of Louisville was so impressed with Timyah’s dedication to get to every event that he brought her out into the middle of the baseball field at the final event and told everyone that she was a special SUPERHERO! Check out Timyah with Mayor Fischer and her dad, below, as well as some of the other great kindergartners we met this summer!

BEING PREPARED FOR SCHOOL

ENTHUSIASM

MY TALENT We asked Timyah a couple questions about herself and about the upcoming school year. Check out her answers:

MY HEART

MY SUPERPOWER! Timyah with the GGC team!

So, Timyah, what are you going to do this year to be a good student? To be a good student , I am going to do my homework. That’s great! You’ve definitely done your “homework” over the summer getting ready for kindergarten, so I’m sure you’ll keep up the good work. Tell me a little bit about your family. My family is nice! Well, you’re a lucky girl to have such a nice family. What about you? What should people know about Timyah? I love to color and play outside! Those are way fun things to do , and things that I know other kindergartners like to do, too! So you’re not superhuman, just a superhero. Any advice about school that you’ve gotten that you want to pass on to other kids? The advice I have received from my family is to listen to my teachers and do my homework.

A couple lucky kids won capes!

Great advice for every year in school, not just kindergarten. Thanks Timyah! Good luck this year!

Communities in Schools champions the connection of needed community resources with schools. By bringing caring adults into the schools to address children's unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The Communities In Schools network is active in 27 states and the District of Columbia. Our nearly 200 local affiliates serve the lowest performing schools and the students most vulnerable to dropping out.

Founded in 2000, DonorsChoose.org allows citizen philanthropists to fund specific project requests from teachers in U.S. public schools. We make it personal: donors choose a project that moves them, and then they hear back from the classroom with photos and updates. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 to inspire young people's interest and participation in science and technology. FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to pursue education and career opportunities in science, technology, engineering, and math, while building self-confidence, knowledge, and life skills.
