Walking through the halls this semester has been truly inspiring. The energy, creativity, and dedication that fill our classrooms every day make this community so accomplished. This fall has been a time of growth, achievement, and connection.
One of our most meaningful milestones was being recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, a celebration of the hard work of our students, teachers, and families. Reflecting on reaching this milestone during the Blue Ribbon Week allowed us to truly quantify our accomplishment as one of three K-12 schools in the United States to receive that honor from the US Department of Education. Our seven-year strategic plan offers a road map for enhancing Pioneer Academy’s standing as an educational leader going forward. The future is incredibly bright with your help and the limitless potential of our students.
As a community, we continuously strive to achieve new goals, embracing fresh ideas and expertise brought by new staff members. In line with our commitment to environmental stewardship, character, and leadership, we aim to become a Green Ribbon School and a National School of Character.
This year, we upgraded our campus with new smart boards, state-of-the-art music and art rooms, modernized STEM spaces, and even a new school bus. These improvements reflect our dedication to providing an exceptional learning environment that supports both innovation and sustainability.
Our students’ accomplishments never cease to surprise and continue to astonish us! This semester, we celebrated early acceptances to NYU and Stanford University and a full scholarship for an international student to
Stevens Institute of Technology. We look forward to all of our seniors’ college acceptances, and we cannot wait to celebrate these milestones with them as we receive the news of their new endeavors.
At Pioneer, we celebrate together many holidays, such as Thanksgiving, the winter season, and New Year, and attend field trips. Our students embrace each other’s diversity and learn about different cultures. This semester we enjoyed a Mariachi Band during the Hispanic Heritage Month and the Diwali Festival festivities, which included a spectacular showcase of dance and food. In line with the school culture, it was all embraced by goodwill during the National Kindness Assembly. Our students also showcased their talents at the Annual Music and Art Expo. These experiences remind us of the joy that comes from learning and growing together.
“Great schools are not built by walls or technology alone, but by the dreams, dedication, and compassion of those who fill them with life.” Our daily efforts are guided by this spirit, which has shaped the remarkable community we’ve established together.
Thank you for being part of our vision.
Warmly,
Owen O. Akman, M.S Head of School Pioneer Academy

At Pioneer Academy, our mission is to create an environment that minimizes distractions and fosters meaningful learning and personal growth.
This year, we took a bold step toward that vision by transitioning to a phone-free campus.
On October 15th, we officially launched the YONDR pouch initiative, a system designed to safely secure students’ phones during school hours.
The impact has been immediate and transformative. Classrooms have become more focused, with students demonstrating heightened attentiveness to lessons and greater engagement in discussions. Social interactions have also flourished, as students connect face-to-face without the distractions of constant notifications or screen time.
Beyond the classroom, students are discovering new ways to approach learning. They are turning to books as valuable research tools, developing critical
thinking skills by asking insightful questions, and improving their communication through collaborative discussions.
The phone-free initiative has also encouraged students to test their patience and problem-solving abilities without relying on immediate access to technology. These experiences are helping them build resilience and adaptability, skills that will serve them well both in and outside the classroom.
We are proud to see our students grow in focus, curiosity, and connection as we continue to nurture an environment that prioritizes learning and interpersonal development.
On December 12th, 3rd and 4th grade students took a thrilling step back in time as they visited Medieval Times in Lyndhurst. The field trip, which was both educational and fun, allowed the students to experience the wonders of the Middle Ages in an immersive, interactive way. It was an unforgettable day filled with knights, jousting, and medieval feasts.
Upon arriving at the grand castle, students were immediately transported into a world of knights, royalty, and medieval traditions. The atmosphere inside was filled with the sights of banners and armor, creating the perfect setting for a journey
into the past. One of the most exciting parts of the trip was the live knight tournament, where the students watched as skilled riders and performers took center stage in an exciting display of jousting, sword fighting, and horsemanship. The students cheered on the Red and Yellow knight, waving banners and clapping enthusiastically as the knights competed in friendly yet fierce challenges. The actionpacked show was not only thrilling but also educational, offering the students a chance to learn about the customs and chivalric code of the Middle Ages.
During the show, the students enjoyed a medieval-style feast, where they were treated to a meal fit for royalty. They ate with their hands, just as people did during
that time, and enjoyed hearty dishes such as roasted chicken, potatoes, and bread. It was a fun and interactive way for students to experience what dining was like in the Middle Ages, while also embracing the spirit of the time period.
The trip to Medieval Times was a fantastic way for students to connect with history in a hands-on and memorable way. It provided a unique opportunity to bring their studies of the Middle Ages to life through a fun and engaging experience.
As we boarded the bus to return to school, their faces were filled with smiles and excitement. For many, the experience was one they would remember for years to come. Thanks to this trip, the 3rd and 4th graders of Pioneer Academy had a firsthand glimpse into the past—a day full of adventure, history, and fun at the Medieval Times castle.

That’s exactly what the second graders experienced during their exciting project inspired by the iconic Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Their classroom transformed into a hub of imagination, history, and hands-on creativity as they brought their own parade to life.
The adventure began with students diving into the fascinating history of this cherished Thanksgiving tradition.
Together, they learned how the Macy’s Parade originated nearly a century ago and discovered the magic behind those towering, colorful balloons that millions look forward to every year. From understanding how helium is used to lift the balloons into the sky, to hearing about the artists and engineers who design their shapes, students were captivated by the sheer artistry and effort involved in creating these larger-than-life masterpieces.
With the fascinating details fresh in their minds, it was time for the second graders to roll up their sleeves and channel their creativity. Their mission? To design their very own parade balloons, each as unique as the students themselves. Armed with crayons, markers, and imagination, they sketched out their ideas on paper. There were animals, superheroes, video game characters, and even wild imaginary creatures that looked like they’d stepped right out of a dream. “I made a dragon with rainbow wings!” said Sophia, beaming with pride. “It’s going to look so cool floating in the parade!”
Once the designs were ready, it was time to take things to the next level—literally! With the help of their teachers, the students carefully decorated actual balloons to match their creative sketches. Each student worked enthusiastically, using paints, stickers, and other craft supplies to bring their balloon designs to life. “I didn’t think my turtle balloon would look THIS awesome,” laughed Jayden, showing off his tiny green masterpiece complete with a shell covered in silver glitter.
To celebrate their hard work, the second graders proudly carried their creations through the hallways of the lower school on November 27, hosting their very own Thanksgiving Parade. Each room they visited erupted in cheers and applause. Students paraded alongside their balloons while festive music played in the background. “It felt like we were in New York City!” said Ella, thrilled by the experience. Teachers, parents, and even some older students came to watch, adding to the festive atmosphere and making every second grader feel like a star.
Beyond the joy and excitement of the parade, there were valuable lessons packed into this project. The students explored history, honed their artistic and problem-solving skills, and learned the importance of hard work and teamwork. Perhaps the most special takeaway, however, was the sense of pride they felt in dreaming up something amazing and seeing it come to life. “This was the best project we’ve done all year,” said Ethan, while giving his floating creation one last proud twirl.
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade project is yet another example of how Pioneer Academy blends hands-on learning with fun and creativity. It’s not just about what students learn—it’s about how they learn, and the memories they make along the way. For the second graders, this project wasn’t just a classroom activity—it was a celebration of their imaginations and a day they’ll never forget.
Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is a joyous occasion celebrated by millions around the world. It symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness, and is a time for families to come together, exchange gifts, and celebrate new beginnings.
This year, Pioneer Academy embraced the spirit of Diwali with a vibrant and inclusive community event held on Wednesday, October 30th, in the school cafeteria. Organized by dedicated parents with the support of the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and generous family contributions, the festival showcased the rich cultural traditions associated with this special holiday.
The cafeteria was transformed into a colorful spectacle, buzzing with excitement and activity. Students’ artwork depicting Diwali themes adorned the walls, while intricate rangoli puzzles challenged and delighted attendees. The fragrant aroma of henna filled the air as students and parents alike lined up to receive beautiful henna tattoos. Creative expression continued with diya painting, allowing everyone to personalize their own lamps to take home and light.
The Pioneer Academy Diwali Festival was more than just a celebration; it was a testament to the school’s diverse and inclusive community.
The highlight of the evening was undoubtedly the lively dance performances. Students, dressed in vibrant traditional attire, showcased their talents with captivating routines. Not to be outdone, parents also joined in the festivities, demonstrating their own impressive dance moves and adding to the joyous atmosphere.
Adding to the community spirit, volunteers from the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) played an integral role in the event’s success. They assisted with setup, facilitated activities, and ensured that everyone had a memorable and enjoyable experience. Their involvement exemplified the school’s commitment to fostering leadership and community engagement among its students.
The event provided a platform for families to share their cultural heritage, connect with one another, and create lasting memories. Through vibrant decorations, engaging activities, and captivating performances, the festival truly captured the essence of Diwali – a celebration of light, community, and the triumph of good over evil.
This year marked an exciting milestone for Pioneer with the introduction of its firstever dance team. Through this program, students have been honing their techniques and learning engaging routines to prepare for competitions. The team’s debut has brought fresh energy to the school’s arts scene, inspiring creativity and camaraderie among participants.
The Lower School and Middle School Dance Clubs showcased their talents at
the Hearts and Beats Dance Competition with outstanding results. The Lower School performed two routines that earned Platinum awards. Their “Turkey Tango,” a spirited tango performance, secured 1st Place and the “Unique Award,” while their hip-hop number, “Pumpkin Patch,” captured 2nd Place. These accolades highlight the dedication and skill of the young dancers.
Similarly, the Middle School dancers impressed the judges with their vibrant performances. The Bollywood-inspired
“Happy Diwali” routine earned Platinum and 3rd Place honors, while their hiphop piece, “Tamma Tamma Again,” also received a Platinum award and 3rd Place. These achievements reflect the hard work and enthusiasm of the students, as well as the growing success of Pioneer’s dance programs.

The excitement was palpable as the 4th and 3rd graders eagerly anticipated the appearance of a Watershed Ambassador at Pioneer Academy. This visit promised to be more than just a typical day in the classroom; it was an opportunity to dive into the fascinating world of macroinvertebrates.
These tiny creatures, which inhabit our streams and rivers, play a pivotal role in the ecosystem by serving as indicators of water quality. Their presence often reflects the health of the environment, a concept that the Ambassador will explore with the students.
The Ambassador’s presentation was tailored to captivate young minds, filled with interactive segments that bring science to life. Children did not only learn about the diversity and importance of macro-invertebrates, but they also had the chance to get their hands wet, and identified species using simple tools. This hands-on activity fostered both curiosity and environmental stewardship, encouraging students to think critically about the natural world.
In addition to its educational benefits, the Ambassador’s visit underscores the importance of community partnerships in education. It’s a reminder that learning extends beyond textbooks and the four walls of a classroom. Through collaborations with local environmental organizations, schools can provide unique learning experiences that inspire students.
Families can further support their children’s education by engaging with these topics at home, nurturing an appreciation for science and nature that lasts a lifetime. The day not only educated but inspired community-wide discussions on conservation and ecological health. From November 18 to 22, Pioneer Academy’s Upper School sponsored Mental Health De-Stress Week, aimed at raising awareness about mental health while providing students with engaging and relaxing activities. Each day featured a unique theme and events designed to encourage self-care, positivity, and community.
Kindness Monday kicked off the week with a focus on inclusivity and compassion. Students were encouraged to smile and greet 50 people as part of a kindness challenge, earning “Character Evolution” T-shirts. The highlight of the day was a magical door in the lobby that opened with a smile, symbolizing the power of positivity. Mental health awareness stickers and motivational wristbands were also distributed during lunch.
On Motivational Tuesday, students explored ways to stay inspired and focused. A fortune-telling activity in the morning offered positive reminders, while a slime-making session during lunch allowed for creativity and stress relief. “Motivation is about finding what sparks your passion and using it to fuel your day, no matter how tough it gets,” Ms. Fatma reminded participants.
Let the Energy Flow Wednesday highlighted the importance of maintaining mental and psychological balance. Energy stones were distributed in the morning to promote positivity, and a hands-on air-dry clay activity provided a creative outlet for students during lunch.
Wellness Thursday celebrated self-care with a “Spin the Wheel” activity to inspire wellness goals. Students participated in stress-relief activities like temporary tattoos, face masks, and anti-stress coloring. The day concluded with an energizing Zumba session led by Ms. Baham, which brought staff and students together in a lively display of movement and camaraderie.
The week wrapped up with Thankful Friday, encouraging students to focus on gratitude and self-acceptance. A $3 Green Dress Down event supported mental health awareness, and students enjoyed sweet treats at the Mental Health Desk, reminding everyone that “Stressed” spelled backward is “Desserts.”

On a bright and sunny Saturday, students from Pioneer Academy’s dormitory embarked on a thrilling adventure to Treetop Adventure Park. It wasn’t just a day filled with zip-lining and navigating tree-top obstacles; it was an opportunity for camaraderie, personal growth, and unforgettable memories.
From the moment the group arrived, excitement was in the air. The park, nestled in a serene natural setting, promised adventure and breathtaking views. For many, it was their first time stepping into a harness and taking on such challenges.
The courses were designed to test balance, strength, and mental fortitude, pushing everyone just outside their comfort zones. What made the experience truly special was the spirit of teamwork. Encouraging shouts and laughter echoed through the trees as students cheered each other on. Moments of hesitation—whether standing at the edge of a zip line platform or maneuvering across wobbly bridges—were met with motivating words and helping hands.
As the day unfolded, it became clear that the trip was more than just an outdoor excursion. It was a lesson in perseverance, trust, and collaboration. By the time the
final zip line was conquered, students had not only completed the courses but also strengthened bonds with their peers.
The stunning natural surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for reflection and celebration. After a day filled with challenges and triumphs, the group left Treetop Adventure Park with a renewed sense of unity and a treasure trove of shared memories.
The trip was a reminder of the power of stepping out of one’s comfort zone and the magic that happens when individuals come together to support one another. For the students of Pioneer Academy, it was a day they won’t soon forget.
The excitement didn’t stop at Treeptop Adventure Park. On another thrilling Saturday, the students embarked on a journey to iFLY for an extraordinary indoor skydiving adventure.
For many, this was their first time experiencing the sensation of freefall—all within the safety of a state-of-the-art wind tunnel.
After a briefing on safety and techniques, the students suited up and prepared for their flights. The powerful wind tunnel simulated the feeling of soaring through the sky, a surreal experience that left everyone exhilarated.
As with the treetop adventure, camaraderie played a central role. Friends cheered each other on, turning moments of nervousness into celebrations of courage. The shared laughter, applause, and support created an atmosphere of unity and joy.
The annual Pioneer Art and Music Event once again brought creativity and collaboration to life as middle school student painters and musicians joined forces in a dynamic display of artistic synergy.
The event took place in late October. The tradition, cherished by both the school community and participants, celebrates the boundless creativity of young artists and musicians. In this unique event, Mrs. Hernandez middle school painters were inspired by the live performances of their peers conducted by Mr. Cerriku, Ms. Barrist and Mr. Lordi, painting vibrant masterpieces as the melodies of middle and upper school musicians filled the air.
The school showcased the power of art as a universal language, connecting visual and auditory experiences. As brushes swept across canvases, the students responded intuitively to the rhythms and harmonies of their peers’ music.
From lively jazz ensembles to soulful solo performances, each note influenced the colors and shapes that emerged on the painters’ canvases. The collaboration demonstrated the depth of talent and creativity fostered within the school, and the audience was captivated by the seamless interplay between sound and sight.
This tradition not only highlights the artistic abilities of the students but also reinforces the importance of community and creative expression. For many, it’s an opportunity to explore the ways in which different art forms intersect, creating something truly memorable.
The Pioneer Art and Music Event continues to be a beloved tradition, celebrating the spirit of innovation and teamwork that defines the school’s approach to education and the arts.

The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), our dedicated staff, cherished family members, dormitory students, members, and honored guests further reflected the wide embrace of our school’s spirit.
With live music serenading the attendees courtesy of Mr. Cerriku’s adept coordination and the impressive showmanship of our Upper School students, the ambiance was a perfect blend of nostalgia and contemporary celebration.
On November 22nd, Pioneer Academy Middle School Student Government Association (SGA) hosted an amazing Friendsgiving event for grades 5-8 in our school cafe, and it was a huge success! Students came together, bringing delicious homemade meals and side dishes to share with one another throughout the evening. The communal feast made for a warm and inviting atmosphere, perfect for celebrating friendship and gratitude amongst our students and teachers.
While enjoying their meals, students spent time chatting, laughing, and
building connections. The fun didn’t stop there—friendship bracelet-making stations and enthusiastic sessions of Just Dance in our school auditorium kept the excitement going. It was a joy to see so many students singing, dancing, and simply enjoying each other’s company after school.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with many students particularly happy to have extra time to relax and catch up with friends. The event was such a hit that SGA has decided to make Friendsgiving an annual tradition—next year’s event promises to be just as fun, with no plans to change the winning formula.

By the end of the day, dozens of students had signed up for new clubs, eager to explore interests, build skills, and forge friendships. The Club Fair not only celebrated the diverse talents and interests of Pioneer’s student body but also set the tone for an enriching and collaborative school year ahead.
We celebrated National Cat Day on October 29th, bringing together students, faculty, and parents for a fun and heartwarming event dedicated to our feline friends. Participants shared photos of their beloved cats, showcasing a variety of breeds, from playful Persians with their luxurious fur to the sleek and intelligent Siamese. Maine Coons, known for their large size and affectionate nature, made a strong showing, as did the fluffy British Shorthairs and the social Ragdolls.
This event not only celebrated the joy of cats but also strengthened the bonds within the school community. By participating in shared activities like this, students, staff, and parents have the chance to connect on a more personal level, fostering a sense of belonging and camaraderie.
Such events help to create a more inclusive and supportive atmosphere, where families and faculty can engage in meaningful interactions, building relationships that extend beyond the classroom.
Pioneer Academy has once again demonstrated its unwavering commitment to academic excellence, earning the prestigious AP Honor Roll Platinum Award for 2024. This recognition, awarded by the College Board, celebrates schools that achieve exceptional results in Advanced Placement (AP) programs by expanding access to AP courses while maintaining or improving performance on AP exams.
This is not the first time Pioneer Academy has been acknowledged for its outstanding AP program. Last year, the school proudly received the AP Honor Roll Gold Award, marking a significant milestone in its pursuit of academic distinction. The leap to Platinum status in 2024 reflects the school’s continued dedication to fostering a rigorous and inclusive learning environment.
The AP Honor Roll Platinum Award is reserved for schools that excel in three key areas: increasing participation in AP courses among underrepresented groups, improving student performance across all AP subjects, and maintaining high levels of achievement on AP exams. Pioneer Academy has met and exceeded these benchmarks, offering a wide array of AP courses in disciplines ranging from STEM to the arts and humanities.
“This prestigious recognition would not have been possible without our faculty’s dedication, expertise, and passion for helping our students excel,” said Mr. Akman, Pioneer Academy’s Head of School.
This recognition underscores the school’s holistic approach to education—one that emphasizes academic rigor, inclusivity, and student support. With its eyes set on continued success, Pioneer Academy is poised to inspire its students to achieve even greater heights in the years to come.
