MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

What an extraordinary year it has been at Pioneer Academy! As we reflect on the 20232024 academic year, we are filled with pride and gratitude for the incredible achievements of our students, the dedication of our faculty and staff, and the strong bonds we’ve forged within our community.

The year began with our school achieving high rankings, setting a tone of excellence and pride. New facilities like the PioCafe, Media Room, DigiArt Lab, Teacher Lounge, and Counselor Offices enhanced our learning environment. Our sports teams and clubs kicked off with great enthusiasm, embodying the spirit of teamwork and passion. Throughout the year, events like STEAM Week, Career Week, and Pastries with Parents highlighted our commitment to creativity and community.

As we continue celebrating our 25th anniversary, we reflected on our growth and resilience, with big events planned for the upcoming academic year. February was marked by creativity and innovation, showcasing our students’ talents and love for learning. The NJHS and NHS Induction Ceremony and Project PETAL highlighted our focus on leadership, student growth, and parental support. Spring brought celebrations of our students’ college acceptances and the inspiring Alumni Dinner, reinforcing our community’s spirit and dedication. Please stay tuned for more exciting updates!

The culmination of the year was marked by the joyous graduation ceremony of the Class of 2024. This event celebrated years of hard work and dedication, with graduates receiving acceptances from prestigious institutions such as Cooper Union, Cornell, Kings College in the UK, NYU, Princeton, UPenn, UCLA, and many others. Their achievements reflect not only their academic prowess but also their development as compassionate, creative, and committed global citizens.

Our athletic department also saw remarkable growth this year. With the addition of three new teams, our school played a total of 73 games, some

local, others as far as two hours away. We held over 200 practices. Next year, we plan to add even more teams. I would like to thank everyone for their support, as our athletic department’s success and growth couldn’t have happened without each of you.

Exciting news for the upcoming academic year: we are thrilled to announce the addition of a school band and chorus for our Middle School section, as well as the addition of one music and one art teacher to our fine arts department. This expansion showcases our growth and commitment to providing a well-rounded education.

None of these accomplishments would have been possible without the dedication of our faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, PTO, and administrative team. Your leadership and support have been crucial in creating a nurturing environment for our students.

As we look back on this incredible journey, we are reminded of our strength in unity and our shared vision for excellence. Together, we have built a community that nurtures growth and inspires global citizenship. As you move forward, remember that success is not the key to happiness. Instead, happiness is the key to success. Fulfillment comes from making a positive impact in your community, giving back, and finding joy in the happiness of others. Living for others and striving for the greater good will bring you the most profound satisfaction.

Let us continue to support and inspire one another as we strive for excellence and create a future filled with boundless possibilities.

The Kindness Chain

The Kindness Chain, an original work penned by their dedicated drama teacher, Ms. Atay. Conceived during the pandemic when time was abundant, Ms. Atay’s story has evolved significantly over the past year. Reflecting the collective creativity of the students, new characters were introduced, and the plot was reshaped to accommodate the talents and interests of the club members. The collaborative effort did not stop there; students helped extend the play by adding additional lines for each character, further enriching the narrative. This joint effort has culminated in a heartfelt production that reflects both individual and shared contributions.

The Kindness Chain explores the profound impact of small acts of kindness. In the play, an invisible chain connects each character, demonstrating how even the smallest gesture can spark a ripple effect of positivity and transformation.

The storyline underscores the importance of empathy and connection, aiming to inspire audiences to reflect on the power of their actions. As the students prepared to take the stage next, they hoped to leave a lasting impression on their audience, encouraging everyone to embrace kindness and consider the far-reaching effects it can have on our lives and the world around us.

The Power of Knowledge

This year as the elementary drama club, we performed “The Power of Knowledge” play to our parents. This is a script that Ms. Atay wrote for her drama club students to remind them about how important it is to be learning continuously. Most of us have asked “why am I learning this, or how will this information be useful” at some point in our lives. In this story we explored how every bit of information that we learn has the potential to knock on our door one day, one moment and save our day unexpectedly.

Unleashing Hidden Talents

On February 7th, the school’s Art Department transformed a regular staff in-service day into a vibrant celebration of creativity and camaraderie. With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, Ms. Platow and Ms. Hernandez organized a painting workshop centered around the theme of love. It was a day that brought together teachers from all departments—Lower, Middle, Upper, and even Athletics—to express their artistic sides and bond over the shared joy of creating something beautiful.

UNLEASHING HIDDEN TALENT Held in the Pioneer Cafeteria, the workshop saw an impressive turnout. From Dr. Rahman to Ms. Hughes, Mr. Kim, and Ms. Foster, teachers from various disciplines came together, brush in hand, ready to reveal the hidden artists within them. The theme of love provided a perfect canvas for self-expression, and the results were as diverse and unique as the participants themselves.

FOSTERING COMMUNITY THROUGH ART This painting activity was more than just an opportunity to dabble in the arts; it was a chance for teachers to connect on a deeper level, away from the usual hustle and bustle of their daily schedules. It underscored the importance of taking time for creative pursuits and demonstrated how art can serve as a powerful tool for building community and fostering relationships.

A LASTING IMPACT The event was a resounding success, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated. “It was

an incredible experience to see my colleagues in a different light and to share this creative space with them,” said one teacher. The heart-shaped paintings now adorn various classrooms and offices, each one a symbol of the creativity, love, and unity that characterize our school community.

POETRY NIGHT AT PIONEER

UNVEILING THE TALENTS OF TOMORROW

The night wasn’t just about words. It was a performance of courage, raw emotion, and the breakout talents of our talented students. Pioneer Academy witnessed a group of young poets who braved the stage to share their talents. This was no ordinary school event. This was the first Lower and Middle School Poetry Night, an evening that not only celebrated literary creativity but also, the grit and determination of the student performers.

The anticipation leading up to the poetry night was filled with joy and hard work by both teachers and students alike. Mrs. Ezmat, Ms. Loesser, Ms. Du Val, and Ms. Nielsen, the Advanced ELA teachers, nurtured the budding poets. Each educator had a unique and profound influence on her students; Mrs. Ezmat’s helped hesitant voices find their confidence. Ms. Loesser’s passion pushed students to leave no emotion unexplored. Ms. Du Val’s attention to the craft set the standard, while Ms. Nielsen’s nurturing spirit provided a safe space for self-expression.

The narrative of the students’ journeys to the poetry night varied greatly. For some, the process was a growth in confidence, lending a voice to the experiences that shaped them. Others approached the podium with a bubbling excitement, eager to share their playful and imaginative compositions. But for each student, there was a moment—a phrase, a line, or a stanza—that unfurled within themselves a sense of power and accomplishment, independent of the audience’s reaction.

In a series of workshops, students learned the nuances of performance. They practiced vocal intonations, dramatic pauses, and the subtle art

For the parents, the poetry night offered insights into the inner lives of their children. It urged them to listen, not just with ears, but with their hearts. It imparted a critical lesson about the nurturing of our youth — that by creating spaces for selfexpression and reflection, the potential of our children can bloom in the most wondrous and unexpected ways.

of stage presence. Shockingly, for the first time, many of them had to confront the trembling fear of standing before a crowd. Each errant breath, each quaver in their voices became a testament to the immense challenge they were overcoming.

On the night of the performance, the Pioneer Academy hall was transformed into a hallowed stage. The air buzzed with a palpable mix of nerves and excitement. The first few stanzas were read, their echoes finding a welcomed home in the hearts of the audience. Slowly, the performers began to glow under the warm lights, their voices steadier, their expressions more confident.

The verses that held back nothing ranged from the tender to the disturbing, from the humorous to the heart-wrenching. In the sea of voices, each tale found its island of listeners. A middle school student, Emma, delivered an impassioned monologue in verse on the fragility of the environment, her words carrying the weight of a prophet’s vision. Another, Matthew, mesmerized the crowd with a humorous take on the life of a middle-schooler, drawing laughter that rippled through the room.

Pioneer Academy’s poetry night was not just a meticulous recital; it carried a deeper message. It was about fostering an environment where the voice of every child, every unique viewpoint, was not only validated but celebrated. It encouraged the students to look beyond the syllabus, to the threads of connection and empathy that could be woven through their literary endeavors.

The event was a testimony to education that went beyond rote learning. It was an ode to the educators who believed that teaching was as much about empowering young souls as it was about disseminating knowledge. The smiles, the

teary eyes, and the thunderous applause at the performance’s close were affirmations of the success of Pioneer Academy’s inaugural Poetry Night.

This enchanting evening wasn’t just an opportunity for the students; it was an important experience for the parents who attended. It was about unspoken dreams shared from the heart of a child who managed to look his fears in the eye and spoke them down with poetry. It was about the confidence that developed quietly throughout the academic year and was affirmed publicly on stage, applauded not for its perfection, but for its audacity.

The Lower and Middle School Poetry Night was a tapestry woven with the threads of endeavor, growth, and community. The event was a beacon, guiding us to celebrate the small, intimate moments of victory that pave the path for the leaders, storytellers, and professionals of the future. It reminded us that education — real, impactful education — is a convergence of talent and grit, of passion and skill, of creativity and courage. And in those moments under the spotlight, the students did not merely recite poetry; they became the poetry, with their voices etched in the memories of those who had the privilege to listen.

A GRADUATION TO REMEMBER

On the warm afternoon of Tuesday, May 14, the graduating class of 2024 gathered at Montclair State University Memorial Auditorium, marking the culmination of their high school journey. The auditorium buzzed with excitement and anticipation as students, faculty, friends, and family filled the seats, eager to witness this momentous occasion.

The event was a symphony of inspiration and celebration, kicked off by the inspirational remarks from our Head of School, Owen Akman. He spoke passionately about value of service. “As you move forward,” he said to the graduates, “remember that success is not the key to happiness. Instead, happiness is the key to success. Fulfillment comes from making a positive impact in your community, giving back, and finding joy in the happiness

of others. Living for others and striving for the greater good will bring you the most profound satisfaction.”

Another highlight of the ceremony was undoubtedly the keynote address by New Jersey State Senator Britnee Timberlake. Her speech was both motivating and heartfelt, touching on the themes of perseverance, civic responsibility, and the importance of following one’s passion. Her words resonated deeply, leaving a lasting impression on the graduates and audience alike.

Adding a melodic touch to the ceremony, students, under the skilled direction of music teacher Kladji Cerriku, delivered stunning musical performances. The melodies were a beautiful testament to the talent and dedication of our students, providing a perfect backdrop to the event.

Class of 2024

Valedictorian Sara Hanini delivered an eloquent and moving speech, reflecting on the shared experiences and lessons learned during their high school years.

Following the formal ceremony, the celebrations continued with a lavish graduation dinner at the Tides in North Haledon. The evening commenced with a cocktail hour, allowing everyone to relax and unwind while sharing stories and snapping photos to capture the moment.

As dinner concluded, the dance floor opened up, and graduates, along with their friends and family, danced the night away. The music, laughter, and shared happiness made it a night to remember, ensuring that the Class of 2024 would leave with memories to cherish forever.

Exemplary Leadership Award presented to the New Jersey State Senator Britnee Timberlake, who is also a parent of Pioneer Academy, by the Head of School.
Each milestone is a celebration of students’ continuous success. The 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony on June 7th has been a monumental event, which has marked the completion of one chapter and the beginning of another.

“Novella Historica” is more than a school project; it’s a testament to the power of creativity in education. By merging imaginative storytelling with historical inquiry, students have not only enhanced their writing skills but also deepened their understanding of history.

UNLEASHING IMAGINATION

WORLD HISTORY CLASS EMBARKS ON ‘NOVELLA HISTORICA’ PROJECT

This project serves as a shining example of how Pioneer Academy’s teachers inspire and equip students to see the bigger picture, with themselves as the heroes of their own stories.

In an innovative blend of creativity and historical exploration, Dr. Azly Rahman, Head of the Social Studies Department, guided students through a remarkable project in their Modern World History classes this year. The project, aptly named “Novella Historica,” aimed to help students see history not just as a series of dates and events but as dynamic stories where they themselves could be the heroes.

THE JOURNEY INTO HISTORY Students were tasked with writing a 20-25 page novella, embracing the genre of magical realism. This was no ordinary assignment; it was a journey into the past, where students had the opportunity to “travel”

to historical periods of their choice. Each novella required students to craft original book jacket art, further personalizing their historical narratives. Every aspect of the project was designed to encourage students to unleash their imagination while deeply engaging with historical content.

A STORYTELLING APPROACH TO HISTORY

The project spanned 20 weeks, during which students wrote and developed their stories every Friday. They began with crafting story outlines, followed by weekly installments that gradually built up their novellas. This method not only kept students consistently engaged but also allowed them to see the evolution of their narratives over time.

The key learning outcome of “Novella Historica” was to view history through the lens of storytelling. Students learned to structure their narratives with the elements of crisis, conflict, rising action, climax, and resolution, mirroring the never-ending cycle of the “butterfly effect” in historical events.

THE IMPACT AND LEGACY The impact of this project on students was profound. Many found themselves connecting more deeply with historical events, understanding them not just as isolated incidents but as stories that shaped the world. By positioning themselves as protagonists in these tales, students gained a more personal and meaningful connection to history.

Dr. Rahman’s innovative approach has set a new benchmark for how history can be taught. His dedication to making history engaging and relevant has left a lasting impression on his students, who are now equipped with a better appreciation for the past and its continuous influence on the present.

Independent Reading Project in Introduction to Literature

This past semester, the Introduction to Literature class at Pioneer Academy embarked on a unique and engaging journey through literature with the guidance of their teacher, Mr. Antonio De Prospo. The Independent Reading Project was designed to allow students the freedom to explore novels of their choosing and express their interpretations through a variety of creative formats.

The project was filled with opportunities for students to dive deep into their chosen books. Students could illustrate a pivotal moment from their novel through a detailed drawing created with colored pencils, charcoal, or pastels. They could make a collage using various materials that depicted a major event in their chosen book. Students also had the option to turn their book into a liveaction or stop-motion animation film. The more musically inclined students could compose and record a song that resonated for a specific character from their novel. Another fun option was to make a comic strip illustrating a particular chapter. Regardless of the medium they chose, each student also wrote an explanation detailing their project and how it related to their novel.

The primary goal of this project was to enable students to engage deeply with their novels. Mr. De Prospo explained, “I wanted the students to unpack their novels, and I felt that a hands-on activity would help them do just that.” Through this experience, students were able to enhance their comprehension of their chosen book and express themselves creatively. In addition, writing an explanation for their projects helped students articulate their thoughts and ensure that their creative work was grounded in the narrative of their books.

By combining the rigors of literary analysis with the freedom of creative expression, the project fostered a deeper appreciation for reading and a newfound confidence in the students’ abilities to interpret and convey complex narratives.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

My name is Anthony Vargas, I am a second-year student athlete at Oxford College of Emory University studying Psychology, Media Production, and Medicine.

I am a Pioneer Academy Class of 2022 graduate and currently have the honor of serving on the Pioneer Academy Alumni Advisory Board. As team captain of the Oxford Emory men’s basketball team, I have been named Student Athlete of the Month by our Center for Healthful Living, an NJCAA Men’s Basketball Academic Team of the Year Member, and an NJCAA All Academic 2nd Team Recipient. My goal is to navigate Pioneer Academy’s current students, especially those participating in athletics, towards achieving their personal, athletic, and professional goals.

Can you share a bit about your background and what led you to pursue your field of study? I have always been fascinated with the art of filmmaking, from Christopher Nolan’s Inception to Acetabular Labral Reconstruction videos captured during orthopedic surgery. I believe there is an element of psychology across every discipline that is worth exploring, and I believe I would be able to apply this understanding into my passions of medicine and filmmaking. Storytelling is one of the central points of human experience I hope to devote myself to in the future, and I believe it is the key to communicating and understanding ideas that we intend to share.

What were your initial steps after graduation, and how did they shape your career path? Immediately after graduation I spent time working at Woodland Park Summer Camp, and took the summer after high school to enjoy my time with friends and family while I prepared for my first year of college. I’d definitely recommend working in community settings to see if you want your career to be people oriented, because I was constantly working with kids and adults alike to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment. This can look many different ways, of course, but as long as you are doing something to get out of your comfort zone I believe that it will give you the ability to understand what you might want in your career later down the line.

What have been some pivotal moments or decisions in your career journey?

As an undergrad, I wouldn’t say I have completely set my sights on becoming a physician assistant, but it is certainly at the forefront at this moment in time. I believe that the most pivotal moments in my life that have steered me in the direction of medicine are the various surgeries I’ve had throughout my life, and the hospital settings and medical professionals I’ve come across along the way.

What are some emerging trends in your field that recent graduates should be aware of?

The number of clinically active PAs will likely increase by one-third over the next 15 years!

What challenges do you foresee in your industry, and what opportunities might these present? Personal challenges for me at this time in preparation to enter the medical field include deciding whether or not I should consider taking a gap year after my senior year to gain experience and/or study, which field to pursue, and what medical occupation I would truly want to pursue, and if I truly want to pursue medicine when the time comes.

What advice would you give to your younger self or current students? Do not be afraid to ask questions! “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute, the man who does not ask is a fool for life.” Bring a notebook to any speech or presentation you attend, or even seemingly trivial meetings. It is completely different than taking notes on your phone and lets the people around you and the speaker know that you are engaged with what they are saying. You will also retain the information far better and can easily refer to it later. (Thank you for inspiring me to commit to this practice, Dr. Rahman!)
