MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

H

anniversary!

appy 2024! It’s not just the start of a new year but a truly special one for us - it’s our 25th

Can you believe it’s been a quarter of a century since Pioneer Academy first opened its doors in 1999? It feels like just yesterday. Yet, here we are 25 years later brimming with pride and joy over how far we’ve come.

Each step of our journey has been about touching lives and making a real difference. It’s not just about how long we’ve been around; but about the laughter that fills our hallways, the spark of understanding in our classrooms, and the dreams our students have turned into their reality. That’s the real Pioneer spirit, and it’s all thanks to each and every one of you. Our campus has seen some exciting enhancements this year. The introduction of the Pio Cafe, the DigiArt Lab, the Media Studio, and the Mechatronics Workshop, along with the renovations of our classrooms, lounges, and restrooms, have infused our school with new energy and possibilities. These upgrades reflect our commitment to providing an environment where creativity, curiosity, and collaboration thrive. Our 25th year is even more special with the news of our reaccreditation. This is a big thumbs-up to the values we hold dear at Pioneer: Curiosity, Creativity, Compassion, and Commitment. We encourage each of our students to explore, create, and show compassion. We’re not just about books here, we’re about nourishing hearts and minds. Our approach to education is holistic, focusing on personal growth in every aspect. We inspire students to be compassionate

leaders and committed learners, ready to positively impact the world. As Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” That’s exactly what we believe in at Pioneer - working together to build a bright future for each of our students. Celebrating the early achievements of our seniors brings us immense joy. With early acceptances from prestigious institutions like UPenn, Boston College, and three students heading to NYU, we’re excited about what lies ahead. This is just the beginning, and I can’t

wait to share more success stories with you all. To our seniors awaiting more results – we’re cheering for you! Celebrating the early achievements of our seniors brings us immense joy. PRE-K MONTESSORI HOP ON FOR THE ULTIMATE FARM TRIP!

A

s the new school year kicked off, the Pre-K students were in for an exciting adventure - a trip to Demarest Farms! The day started with all of them piling onto a bright yellow school bus and embarking on their journey to the farm. Once they arrived, they were greeted by friendly staff members who showed them around the farm. They got to experience a tractor ride, which was quite thrilling for many of them as it was their first time on one! The wind in their hair and the bumpy ride made them all giggle and scream with excitement. After all the animal fun, it was time

for us to put on their detective hats and explore the pumpkin patch. They were on a mission to find the perfect pumpkins to take home with us. It was like a real-life scavenger hunt and they all felt like true pumpkin detectives. The adventure didn’t end there; they teamed up with the 4th graders for a special activity - creating explosive pumpkin volcanos! Using pumpkins, baking soda, and vinegar, they were able to make their very own exploding volcanoes. It was a messy but incredibly fun science experiment that left them all in awe.

The highlight of the day was definitely when they got to meet all the farm animals. They even got to feed some of them and learn interesting facts about each animal.

KEEP THE MAGIC ALIVE

T

he lower school students had the opportunity to attend an exciting and interactive magic show back in November. The show was filled with mesmerizing illusions, mindbending tricks, and hilarious comedy routines that kept our young Eagles on their toes. The students were engaged and entertained throughout the entire performance, eagerly participating in the various acts, and cheering on their classmates who were selected to assist the magician.

The magician even shared some tips for simple magic tricks that the students could try at home. They were able to share in the excitement and awe of witnessing seemingly impossible feats together, creating new memories and inside jokes that they can cherish for years to come. The show served as a reminder that with a little bit of imagination and practice, anything is possible. We hope to continue bringing unique and engaging events like this to our students. Keep the magic alive!

LOWER SCHOOL LOWER SCHOOL ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE WAS A BOOK FAIR The Scholastic Book Fair is an annual event that takes place in schools all around the world. It aims to promote literacy and a love for reading among students of all ages. During this fair, students are given the opportunity to browse through a wide array of books, ranging from popular classics to new releases. This not only introduces them to new genres and authors but also helps in expanding their knowledge and vocabulary. With a vast selection of books to choose from, students are able to find something that captures their interest and encourages them to continue reading. The lower school students’ excitement during our Annual Scholastic Book Fair in October was palpable as they eagerly browsed through the shelves, discussing their favorite books. This not only creates a positive and enthusiastic atmosphere around reading but also encourages students to explore new genres and authors that they may not have considered before.

SOCIAL STUDIES TAKES THE STAGE AT LOWER SCHOOL

F

irst graders are at an exciting stage in their lives, where they embark on a journey of discovery and learning. At this age, they are full of curiosity and enthusiasm, eager to explore the world around them. One of the key aspects that first graders learn about is families and cultures. In today’s society, we live in a globalized world where diversity is celebrated and embraced. It is important for young learners to understand and appreciate different cultures, as it helps them develop empathy, respect, and openmindedness. As part of their curriculum, they engage in heartwarming activities that allow them to learn about families and cultures. These activities may include reading books and stories from various cultural backgrounds, trying out traditional foods, learning about different traditions and customs, and even inviting families from diverse backgrounds to share their experiences. The culmination of this unit 6

FALL 2023

is a special event where first graders become teachers themselves. They joyfully share their family traditions and cultural treasures with the entire class, creating a vibrant exchange of knowledge and understanding within the classroom community. Through this experience, not only do the students celebrate diversity, but they foster a sense of unity and empathy towards their classmates. The exploration of families and cultures is an important part of first grade education. It not only broadens the students’ perspectives but helps them

become compassionate and respectful individuals who can positively contribute to their communities. By learning about different cultures, first graders not only expand their knowledge and understanding of the world, but they develop valuable skills such as communication, collaboration, and critical thinking. These skills are essential for building strong relationships and creating inclusive communities in today’s diverse society.

LOWER SCHOOL My name is Danielle Ezmat. I graduated from Montclair State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education. Continuing my education, I attended Long Island University receiving a Master of Arts in Literacy. This is my 20th year in education, most recently as the transitional kindergarten teacher at VRECS School in Fair Lawn, NJ and as Interim Director. Previously, I taught for 18 years at Dorchester Elementary School in Woodcliff Lake as a K-5 classroom teacher.

Three interesting facts about me 1. I am a Kickboxing Instructor 2. My daughter and I model in NYC, and have been in a few commercials together 3.I was a HS Tennis Coach for 8 years What have you loved about Pioneer thus far? I absolutely love my second grade class. I also love working with a wonderful staff and administration.

RESEARCHERS IN 4 GRADE

A

th

s part of their curriculum, 4th graders undertook a research project on natural disasters during the months of November and December. Divided into teams, they spent several weeks reading nonfiction texts related to their chosen topics and taking notes. This exercise not only helped them gain knowledge about different natural disasters but improved their research and note-taking skills. 4th graders later shared their research with their team members which taught them the value of collaboration and teamwork. After completing their research, each group created a Google Slides presentation on their chosen natural disaster. It was not just about creating presentations - the students also took on the role of teachers as they presented their slides to their peers. This helped them develop effective communication skills as they explained complicated concepts in an engaging and easy-to-understand manner.

What are some of your professional goals? I love teaching and would love to continue learning as an educator. I would also love to become a Literacy Instructional Coach.

I am a life-long learner and hope to instill a similar love of learning in your child. Learning and education is the gateway into building a successful life. On a personal note, when I am not at work, I enjoy spending time with my husband and four daughters. We enjoy movie and game nights at home, going to family sporting events and dance competitions, and traveling in the summer. I am excited to begin my journey here at Pioneer Academy.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

The research project on natural disasters was a great way for the students to apply their knowledge in a practical setting. Getting the opportunity to teach others boosted their confidence and provided them with a sense of accomplishment. Overall, it was an enriching experience for the 4th graders and a great way to learn about the power of teamwork, research, and communication. pioneeracademy.org

MIDDLE SCHOOL HONORING OUR VETERANS

Middle school

students

demonstrated their

respect and gratitude

for veterans by engaging in a heartwarming project.

Taking time out of their regular classes, these young

learners meticulously crafted personalized Veterans

Day cards. Students viewed videos highlighting some Medal of

Honor recipients in order to gain perspective and understanding of those who have given so much for our country.

The purpose of this thoughtful gesture was to honor those who have served in

the armed forces, recognizing their sacrifices and bravery. These handmade tokens of

appreciation were then delivered to the Veterans Affairs office, a special touch that undoubtedly

brought warmth and recognition to many veterans. This act not only educated the students about the

importance of Veterans Day but also fostered a sense of community and respect for those who have served our country.

P

ioneer Academy’s 8th grade class took a trip to Pax Amicus Castle Theatre. This historic venue, located in the heart of New Jersey, served as the perfect backdrop for our students to further delve into the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Students got to enjoy performances of a few of Poe’s most renowned stories - “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Tell-Tale Heart” proved to be the students’ favorites. Each performance was brought to life by talented actors, with the ancient castle walls enhancing the

eerie atmosphere of the tales. Directly after the final performances, the students had the opportunity to engage in a lively discussion session. They reflected on the themes and narratives they had witnessed and shared their unique interpretations. Following the performance, students gathered at a small spot across from the castle to enjoy lunch with one another. Students enjoyed the beautiful scenery and got time to spend time with each other outside of the typical educational environment.

This field trip to Pax Amicus Castle Theatre provided the students with an enriching experience that deepened their understanding of Edgar Allan Poe’s works. Poe’s macabre tales will undoubtedly continue to resonate with them, long after their visit to Pax Amicus.

HALLOWEEN 2023

alloween is a holiday that is enjoyed by people of all ages, but it holds a special place in the hearts of children. The excitement surrounding Halloween can be felt throughout the month of October, with decorations and costumes popping up everywhere. It’s a time for creativity and fun, as people dress up in their favorite costumes and indulge in tasty treats. One event that has become increasingly popular at Pioneer Academy is the trunk-or-treat. This is a safe and familyfriendly alternative to traditional trick or treating, where parents decorate their car trunks and hand out candy from them. It’s a great way for children to experience the fun of trick or treating while also being surrounded by their friends and 10 FALL 2023

classmates. At our school, the annual trunk-or-treat event is highly anticipated by both parents and students. On Halloween day, the students get to go trick or treating around the school building. This gives them a chance to show off their costumes and collect even more candy from different classrooms. It’s a great way for teachers and students to bond outside of the classroom and for parents to join in on the fun as well. Tiny superheroes mingle with princesses, and ghouls exchange jokes with witches, creating a vibrant tapestry of memories. The sense of camaraderie and community is palpable, further strengthening the close-knit ties within our school community. It’s not just about the candy, it’s about the shared experiences, the stories they create, and the lifelong friendships being formed. These are the unforgettable Halloween memories that our students carry with them, marking their journey of growth and camaraderie at our school.

The school parking lot is transformed into a festive Halloween wonderland, with cars decked out in spooky decorations and children running around in their costumes. It’s a wonderful sight to see parents and teachers working together to create a fun and safe environment for the kids.

Windmills, old and new were a fantastic sight as we approached the city of Amsterdam. A visit to Zaanse Schans Windmills helped us learn about the small communities that depended on these windmills. In the 18th and 19th centuries, these hulking buildings were the lifeblood of the Dutch economy, making all kinds of items from furniture to paper to flour.

Our first stop was Frankfurt Germany, where we walked around the city of Alstadt, and explored Römerberg square or Old Town Frankfurt. Its colorful history reveals scenes of gothic buildings and steepled structures The site is home to a number of historical events including the backdrop for John F Kennedy’s groundbreaking visit in the 60’s.

Amsterdam’s beautiful canals hosted a city boat tour the following morning. Then, a selfguided tour of the city. Amsterdam’s bike paths were exciting to encounter and its rich art history made for an eventful experience. Following our day trip to Amsterdam was a stop in Brussels Belgium, for a tour of the city’s historic “European Quarter,” where the institutions of the European Union are located.

AN EPIC ROAD TRIP TO EUROPE

ow incredible it is to know that we can share amazing experiences at Pioneer Academy. At the conclusion of our 2022-2023 school year, we were able to offer our students a trip of a lifetime. The trip included a visit to four European countries, six cities, and tons of memories.

Visiting a real landmark castle was next on the list. Heidelberg castle is known as one of the most important Renaissance landmarks in Europe. We hiked the city to reach the castle and then toured its historic courtyards, rooms, and gardens. Our excited students visited Cologne for a day and took in its amazing sites on the bank of the Rhine. Cologne is home to a number of art exhibits, parks, and most importantly its famous gothic cathedral. Dusseldorf TV tower was last on our German tour. The 780 foot high tower provided us some excellent views of Dusseldor and allowed us to have a relaxing moment over coffee and dessert.

Our final stop on our European trip was Paris, France. Paris’ art, fashion, gastronomy and culture gave our students a giant playground to enjoy. We walked along the banks of the River Seine, climbed the Eiffel Tower, shopped at the Champs-Elysees at the Arc de Triomphe and visited the world famous Louvre Museum. Students looking for shopping and fun indulged in Paris’s boutique culture and rich eateries while those interested in music and art indulged in the art that surrounds the city. We look forward to our future trips around the world to see new sights and make more life long memories.

New Season, New Teams, High Spirits On Thursday, October 26th Pioneer Academy had its last soccer game of the 2023 season. The team traveled to face off against Saddle River Day School.

O

ur Eagles were not alone. Plenty of peer and staff support was in attendance for the match. School administration was able to provide a fan bus for students to be transported to and from the away school to watch the game. The game was intense from the opening whistle with our Pioneer Academy Eagles battling hard. They were able to secure a 1-1 tie to finish their season on a high

note. Our lone goal was scored by Sophomore Sanad Saleh. Our goal-keeper Adrian Niser was strong in net and had a game saving penalty kick save to secure the tie. We are proud of the success we have made with our soccer program this year. One of our many new sports that is headed in the right direction. We look forward to the future success of all athletic teams at Pioneer Academy.

The boys won the Neptune High School Holiday Tournament over the winter recess. Defeating Allentown High School 57-55 in the championship game. The boys were led by Junior Jayden Huggins, Bryce Watkins, and tournament MVP, Raheem Murray. The girls are coached by Villanova National Champion Alumni Dwight Wilbur, while the boys are coached by young and enthusiastic 1st year head coach Malcolm Pope. Keep working hard Eagles!

T

he morning began with a visit from Mr. Anthony Valentine as a guest speaker. He addressed our Upper School students and 8th grade class posing the question, “Who are you beneath your skin?” The conversation drew the students’ attention to the figurative walls people create built upon their own prejudices and biases. Instead of walls, students were encouraged to build bridges. These bridges could be in the form of friendships, helpful hands, and caring relationships, regardless of one another’s race, gender, customs, or norms. As young adults, our students should begin to understand the role they play in the lives of others and the impact their actions may have on society. The assembly ended with an activity that showed how our muscles become fatigued when they are working on their

A NEW TRADITION AT PIONEER

UNITY DAY

A new tradition has been unlocked! Unity Day is an

Then the entire upper school shared a Unity Breakfast prepared by New Line Catering. While they ate, students were encouraged to reflect on what they had heard and also to create frienship bracelets with encouraging words on them. The final piece of Unity Day was a class field trip to various local areas where students could spend some friendly time together outside of the classroom. Their trips to Humdinger’s Bowling Alley, American Dream Mall, and Cinemark Movie Theatres allowed each student to bond with their classmates creating everlasting memories.

Students reported that the activities allowed them to meet new people and to learn more about one another.

Hopefully, Pioneer students will remember the sense of community that was established during Unity Day and use it to guide them through the rest of their school year.

t the heart of our vibrant school community, a tradition of gratitude and a shared meal unfurled its delightful spirit this past November. The annual Thanksgiving lunch, a nexus where culture, kinship, and the culinary arts meet, witnessed an interweaving of shared moments that enriched the tapestry of our beloved institution.

The festivities were ignited by the vibrant performances of our young talents, from kindergarteners to 4th graders, guided by the inspirational Mr. Wise. Their display of talent was not just entertainment; it was a narrative of growth and fellowship, attributes that our school holds dear.

Parents and guardians, your involvement and generosity helped us spread the joy with a scrumptious meal that remains etched in our memories. It was the alchemy of your support that turned an ordinary school gathering into a warm emulation of the cherished family dinner table.

the joys of Thanksgiving at Pioneer. To everyone who was part of this wonderful celebration—thank you. Until next year’s feast, may the spirit of community and gratitude continue to be a hallmark of our collective journey.”

The Pioneer Spirit of Gratitude

Amidst the charming decorations and the scent of roasted turkey, the Pioneer Traditional Thanksgiving Lunch unfolded. This segment of our festivities celebrated our interconnectedness as students, faculty, alumni, and leaders came together to break bread under one roof. With live music serenading the attendees courtesy of Mr. Cerriku’s adept coordination and the impressive showmanship of our Upper School students, the ambiance was a perfect blend of nostalgia and contemporary celebration.

Distinguished Guests and Memorable Moments

The presence of Mayor Vergano was a testament to the event’s significance within our broader community, while representatives from Sheriff Berndik’s Office underscored the caring stewardship that surrounds us. The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), our dedicated staff, cherished family members, dormitory students, Student Government Association

(SGA), National Honor Society (NHS) members, alumni, and honored guests further reflected the wide embrace of our school’s spirit. True to our identity, the gathering was more than a feast—it was a reminder that although we are a small school, we stand together as one expansive family, connected by humility and fortified by an immense collective heart.

One Family, One Table, One Heart

As we reflect on this day of unity and thanks, we carry with us the laughter, the lively chatter, and the quiet moments of appreciation that filled the halls. What emerged from this grand event was the palpable sense that when we come together, the strength of our bonds transcends the mere sharing of a meal—it fosters an incredlble sense of belonging.

This Thanksgiving, amid the clinking of cutlery and the symphony of communal joy, we created more than just a meal. Together, we crafted memories, we wove a stronger social fabric, and we confirmed, once again, the profound truth: we are indeed a small school with a big family and an even larger heart.

As your words of thanks still echo, as the last pieces of pumpkin pie were shared with smiles, the story of our Thanksgiving lunch isn’t just about satisfying hunger. It’s about nurturing hearts and building traditions that will carry our values forward for generations. pioneeracademy.org 25

CELEBRATING BOARDERSEARTH DAY!

ON THE ROAD!

Dorm life at Pioneer has always been about more than just study sessions. This Fall, it became a gateway to adventure, as students set out to explore New York City and Washington DC. September 16 set the stage for the kind of day best described as storybook-perfect. Our cohort of 25 eager students, with cameras ready, headed into the concrete jungle of New York City. From Times Square to Central Park they spent a full day visiting the top landmarks in NYC. Fast forward to October 21st. This time 27 students embarked on a visit to the nation’s capital. The group journeyed from landmark to landmark, standing in awe before the marbled façade of the Capitol Building, gazing at the iconic White House, and craning their necks to appreciate the heights of the Washington Monument. The adventures in New York and Washington DC may have been mere day trips, but the stories gathered are lifelong treasures.
