Each fall, I look forward to the chance to share the Impact Report with you. This publication allows us to reflect on the achievements and insights from the previous academic year while setting the stage for the current one. Reflecting on last year, I can confidently say that 2023-24 was outstanding for Pinewood, a success we owe to your continued partnership and support. Your generosity empowered us to maintain the high standards of our academic and co-curricular programs, ensuring our students receive a well-rounded and enriching education. The funds raised through the Annual Fund First have also enabled us to continue our tradition of recruiting and retaining exceptional faculty.
Contributions to the Benefit Auction allowed us to invest in our faculty’s professional development, fostering a culture of lifelong learning. These opportunities for growth directly enrich your child’s educational experience and uphold our commitment to excellence.
Pinewood experienced significant success in the 2023-24 academic year, as reflected in several key indicators. The recent admission season was our best to date, with a record number of families applying and a notable increase in the number of students accepting offers of admission. This allowed us to welcome a group of mission-driven families from a highly competitive applicant pool into our community. Our 2024 graduates have been accepted into their top-choice colleges and universities nationwide, showcasing our dedication to equipping students for their next steps, whatever those may be.
As you explore this report, you will see numerous examples of how your contributions make a tangible difference in the lives of our students and the vibrancy of our community.
Together, we are creating a brighter, stronger future for Pinewood School.

Meet Eve
Our New Head of Upper Campus
Eve Kulbieda, the new Head of Upper Campus at Pinewood School, is a passionate and dedicated educator whose philosophy is centered on the holistic development and safety of students. Eve’s journey in education has always been guided by her North Star: ensuring that students are safe, both psychologically and physically, while fostering their intellectual and emotional growth. This guiding principle has driven her to remain closely connected with students, whether through attending theater rehearsals, dance practices, or school games. “I’m not the kind of educator who isn’t with the kids,” she emphasizes, underscoring her commitment to being present and engaged in students’ lives.
Eve’s dedication is deeply tied to her belief in character development. She was drawn to Pinewood for its commitment to graduating not only academically successful students but also individuals of strong character. “Pinewood cares about graduating humans who understand ethics, character, and themselves,” she explains. She is excited to join a community that aligns with her values, balancing intellectual achievement with ethical growth.
Outside of her professional life, Eve finds solace in nature, a passion rooted in her Tasmanian upbringing. Running serves as her meditation, connecting her with nature and offering a balance to modern stressors—something she encourages students to explore.
Her journey to Pinewood reflects a global perspective, shaped by her upbringing in Australia, meeting her husband in Germany, and settling in California. Her family’s love of travel exposes their children to diverse cultures, reflecting her openness to new ideas and commitment to raising adaptable, culturally aware children.
As Eve steps into her role, her top priority is immersing herself in the Pinewood community. She aims to connect with students, faculty, and parents to better understand the academic program and faculty aspirations. Eve is eager to foster Pinewood’s unique culture while celebrating its strong academic program, envisioning a school where students excel academically and grow into confident, compassionate individuals.

“Today, as they stand on the brink of graduation, ready to embark on their next great adventure in college, we reflect on the profound impact they’ve had on our Pinewood community”
-- Ms. Fugita, Mr. Bates, & Mrs. McRobbie
Student Impact
At Pinewood School, the heart of our mission lies in promoting the overall growth and development of our students. This year, our students have not only excelled academically but have also made significant strides in leadership, community service, and personal growth. From innovative classroom projects to impactful service initiatives, the contributions of our students reflect their dedication, creativity, and resilience.
Ecumenical Hunger Program Partnership: A Year of Service at Middle Campus
During the 2023-24 school year, under the guidance of our service project parent liaison, Eileen Lee, and faculty leaders Mrs. Walker and Mrs. Zmuda, we reimagined the Middle Campus service project.
Students in grades 3-6 collectively supported the Ecumenical Hunger Program (EHP), a grassroots organization in East Palo Alto that provides critical assistance to families and individuals facing economic and personal hardships.
Throughout the year, Middle Campus students participated in various projects contributing to EHP’s
mission. Each classroom visited EHP, resulting in a total of eight visits by all nine classes. Additionally, K-6 faculty engaged in a dedicated professional development day at EHP.
We are excited to continue our partnership with EHP in the 2024-25 school year, deepening our commitment to community service and instilling these values in our students. Stay tuned for updates on how you can get involved. Together, we can make a meaningful impact in our community.
Spanish Fair
As part of the One School Initiative, we’re committed to fostering cultural exchange through student interaction. The cross-campus Spanish Fair was a part of that effort. The collaboration between Upper Campus students (AP Spanish and Film and Culture classes) and 2nd graders proved highly beneficial. By organizing a fair with four stations featuring familiar vocabulary, the event facilitated natural language immersion. Older students served as positive role models, encouraging younger ones to use their Spanish confidently. The setup allowed both groups to communicate freely in Spanish without fear of judgment, fostering a supportive learning environment.
Challenge Success
Challenge Success, a non-profit affiliated with Stanford’s Graduate School of Education, partners with schools to elevate students’ voices and implement equity-centered strategies that enhance well-being, engagement, and belonging for all K-12 students.
Our partnership with Challenge Success ensures Pinewood fosters a sense of belonging by valuing student input and co-creating a learning environment that meets their needs and interests. The Challenge Success Team at Pinewood is dedicated to improving student well-being and engagement, recently attending the Spring Convening in Southern California alongside other middle and high schools.
Pinewood Scholars Program
The Pinewood Scholars Program in Social Entrepreneurship equips students with the skills, knowledge, and mindset to address global challenges. It fosters a commitment to social innovation, sustainability, and community impact, empowering students to drive meaningful change through entrepreneurial endeavors. Students participate in a variety of activities such as practicing pitches with confidence, networking, listening to guest speakers, and drafting up project/business proposals to pitch to the Upper Campus student body. These activities help develop business skills and expose students to what it takes to have entrepreneurial success while still maintaining socially responsible practices.
“PSP has helped me become a more polished presenter and speaker through frequent practice in pitching and networking, both in class and with outside organizations. It also made me a more open and empathetic student by introducing me to amazing people from diverse backgrounds whom I wouldn’t normally meet or work with.”
“PSP has given me a pathway towards making my community a better place. It has taught me the importance of initiative, outreach, and adaptability, which are all valuable skills I know I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life.”

Teacher Impact
“Returning to Pinewood, I felt inspired to immediately integrate new ideas and plan for the future.”

Scholastic Workshop
Last year, a Scholastic representative conducted a comprehensive workshop for all language arts teachers on utilizing the guided reading library, focusing on leading small, leveled reading groups and conducting effective whole-class lessons. Learning directly from the creators of the resource was invaluable, significantly influencing my teaching approach for the remainder of the year and setting a framework for the coming academic term. This opportunity not only kept us up-to-date with best teaching practices, but also underscored the importance of ongoing professional development. Such enriching experiences are made feasible through support from the professional development fund, highlighting its essential role in advancing educators’ skills and enhancing student learning outcomes.
Susie Danzig Broadway Teachers Workshop, New York City
During the summer of 2023, I was able to attend the Broadway Teachers Workshop in New York City. This three-day program featured multiple classes, lectures, and interviews with Broadway professionals. Teachers and directors from around the world attended and interacted with one another. The classes and lectures were inspirational and informative. The dance, puppetry and directing class put me back on the other side, remembering what it is like as a performer to take direction and make adjustments. Learning from a Broadway dance captain reminded me to break down choreography into smaller pieces to teach and to celebrate as the dancers learn. The Conscious Casting lecture brought attention to DEI issues to keep in mind when choosing and casting plays.
A wonderful bonus of this program was that it included going to see Broadway shows and having the opportunity to stay after the show for a “talk back” where members of the cast and crew would come out and talk with the teachers. Many of the actors took time to share how teachers and Theatre education made a difference in their lives. I found the experience rewarding and recharging, I was excited to return and start directing 1st and 2nd Grade plays at Pinewood.
Kim Hudson National Science Teachers Conference, Denver
Last March, I attended the National Science Teachers Conference in Denver, Colorado. My goal was to stay current with new topics, lab ideas, and teaching materials for the biology classroom. The conference offered a valuable opportunity to connect with science teachers from across the country, representing diverse schools and demographics. I focused on workshops relevant to our Honors Biology II course.
I was particularly inspired by sessions on teaching climate science, investigating lactose intolerance, and using 3D-printed hominin skulls to explore human evolution. These workshops provided hands-on applications that I’m eager to implement. Additionally, I attended sessions on pandemics and the complexities of race.
Returning to Pinewood, I felt inspired to immediately integrate new ideas and plan for the future. Before final exams, my students created camouflaged butterflies, competing to outdo one another. Next year, I’ll introduce materials that connect evolution, ecology, and genetics to real-world applications, hoping to ignite the same excitement in my students. Thank you to the Pinewood Community for your ongoing support, which encourages me to grow as a teacher and helps my students grow as well.
Jonathan Brusco Spring CUE (Computer Using Educators) Conference
For the past four years, I’ve had the opportunity to attend and present at the Spring CUE (Computer Using Educators) conference. This annual event, focusing on trends, best practices, tools, and resources for educators utilizing technology, offers numerous sessions for teachers and administrators seeking to support learning in their schools with appropriate and effective use of technology.
This year, I presented two sessions. The first, “Elementary Excellence with A.I.,” highlighted the best new A.I. tools to support elementary teachers. The second session, “Innovate Elementary: Code, Design, Build,” showcased some of my favorite tools for teaching programming, along with strategies for maker-space instruction and design thinking. In addition to presenting on these topics, I attended sessions from Adobe, Google, and Canva, delved deeper into AI in the education space, gained resources for supporting digital citizenship, and met with numerous vendors offering exciting software and robotics tools. Two of my favorites were the Piper Computer Kit for our Middle Campus students and the Marty robot for our Lower Campus students.
I am continually grateful for the generosity of our Pinewood community, which allows us to participate in such engaging professional development opportunities. These experiences expand our knowledge in our fields, enabling us to improve the lives of our students.

Community Impact
The Annual Benefit Auction is a cherished Pinewood tradition celebrating community and philanthropy. In March 2024, over 250 Pinewood community members gathered at Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club for an evening of food, fun, and fundraising. The event raised over $200,000 for the Faculty Professional Development and Graduate Study Reimbursement Program, supporting our teachers as lifelong learners. By staying current in their fields, Pinewood teachers continue to create exceptional learning environments for our students.
