HORTICULTURE & HISTORY

Pinecrest Gardens, formerly Parrot Jungle, an iconic, Old Florida tourist attraction, is a 14-acre botanical and cultural arts garden situated in a hardwood hammock and Bald Cypress slough. Exotic and native plants grow along the original Snapper Creek bed, an important aboriginal American route connecting the Everglades to Biscayne Bay. The Creek’s banks preserve the dramatic karst limestone rock formations of fissures, overhangs, and a 30,000-year-old solution hole. The gardens feature many rare tropical plants: palms, orchids, ferns, succulents, and flowering trees, presented on a unique, historic landscape. The Garden also contains several natural and man-made ponds, an important habitat for several fish and crustaceans, many of which are purported to be endangered species. Pinecrest Gardens is listed on the National Historic Register and is recognized for its significance by the Cultural Landscape Foundation.

Join our horticulture and education team on the first Saturday of the month as we lead tours throughout the Gardens. Each monthly tour will focus on a topic or area of the Gardens. There is always something new to learn. Scheduled tours are offered October through May or by appointment.

FAMILY GARDEN DAY: GROWING NATIVE

Join us for Fall Family Garden Day and spend the morning learning about the plants and animals that call Pinecrest Gardens home. Enjoy garden activities, partner exhibitions, workshops, and meet our Garden Partners and Plant Societies featuring activations and exhibitions at their booths. Special Sensory Hours are available for cognitive-sensitive families.

Works to share and expand their knowledge and love for orchids.

Dedicated to improving and conserving orchids through education and research.

Promotes the preservation, conservation, and restoration of the native plants of Florida.

This hands-on jewelry arts community includes artists working in more than five different materials.

GARDEN VOLUNTEER

Check the calendar for opportunities to join our horticulture team as they lead small groups of volunteers through tending and beautifying the Gardens’ landscapes. Paired with our skilled team, volunteers work in garden areas and perform various outdoor tasks.

Pinecrest Gardens offers unique volunteer and sponsorship opportunities for community-minded companies who wish to engage their employees in community service and underwrite garden materials needed to implement improvement projects.

LITTLE LIZARDS WEDNESDAYS, BIWEEKLY

Join us on Wednesday afternoons near the playground for our Little Lizards Program. This informal science and art program offers different activities relating to a monthly theme. Lizards ages 4 to 12 will read, explore, create, and imagine while learning about the wonders of nature. This is an outdoor program; weather permitting.

SCIENCE & ART ACADEMY

The Cortada Science Art Academy is an immersive after-school program developed by eco-artist Xavier Cortada. Through the fusion of art and science, students ages 9 to 12 gain a deeper understanding of our world, foster leadership abilities, and actively contribute to environmental conservation. Discover how your child’s creativity and empathy are key in our mission to protect the planet for future generations.

HOME SCHOOL CO-SCHOOL WEEKDAYS

9 AM TO 2 PM

Join the Paper Tree House for fun, learning and creativity at our Homeschool Co-Op. This program provides a variety of topics for home learners ages 5 & up to participate in including logic games, science with animal encounters, physical activity, and more. Earn school credit, while enjoying the amenities that Pinecrest Gardens has to offer.

REGISTRATION: Offering four eight-week sessions August through May.

SCHOOL & GROUP FIELD TRIPS BY APPOINTMENT

Book your school’s field trip or youth educational group tour to Pinecrest Gardens early to snag your date. Join us at the Gardens for an exciting educational adventure for PreK-12th Grade and let the garden become your classroom. Choose from our list of lesson plans to get the most out of your visit, or enjoy a leisurely self-guided adventure. We offer guided educational programs, and self-guided field trips.

RESERVATION: Pre-registration required. Field trip includes educational materials, garden admission and picnic area.

GIRL SCOUT PROGRAMS BY APPOINTMENT

Pinecrest Gardens offers badge days for Girl Scout Daises through Cadettes who are working to earn badges. Programs accommodate up to 30 scouts on a scheduled date and run two-hours. Badge Days give scouts the opportunity to embark on a guided exploration through nature, while learning about art of the natural world. Scouts will check off requirements for the badge, and receive their badge following completion of activities.

Drop off your Junior Scientist (ages 4 to 9) at Pinecrest Gardens for an evening full of science and art activities, while you enjoy a night out. At Parents Night Out with Discovery Lab, students will apply STEAM education principals, while discovering nature at night.

ARTS FOR WELLNESS DAY

Families are invited to explore their creativity and imagination through a variety of interactive expressive arts and healing modalities, in an inclusive and supportive community setting.

ENVIRONMENTAL ART CONTEST

Students of Miami-Dade County are invited to enter the 10th annual Environment Art Contest. Submission window begins November 13 and ends January 10. Cash Awards available for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Place. Save-the-Date to see the student art exhibition during our Art & Design Fair.

NIGHTS OF LIGHTS FESTIVAL…AN ILLUMINATING HOLIDAY ADVENTURE

DECEMBER 9 THROUGH JANUARY 6

Step into a dazzling dreamland when Pinecrest Gardens transforms into a whimsical wonderland dotted with thousands of twinkling lights. Embark on a journey deep into our lower garden and enter an enchanted forest fit for a fairytale. On select nights, activities include a pajama party in paradise, live holiday performances, and shopping at our seasonal gift bazaar. Children will be mesmerized by a tree adorned with glittering lights that dance to the rhythms of holiday music, a photo with Santa, or an encounter with a storyteller. Grownups can toast to the holidays with a festive signature cocktail, or attend a beer-tasting night. And everyone will want to indulge in a selection of tasty treats. Mark your calendars for a sparkling experience that will delight your family and light up your night.

In celebration of the 20th Anniversary, we are expanding our festival to include designers and artisans; and are rebranding the event to Art & Design Fair. Imagination takes flight when six towering, 20-foot-tall bamboo-crafted bird sculptures swoop in and overtake Pinecrest Gardens. Meet the stars of the show: a flamboyant macaw and a spectacular cockatoo, both created to recall the memory of Franz Scherr’s Parrot Jungle. There’s also a dapper sandhill crane, a magnificent peacock where kids can run around playing hide-and-go-seek, a wise owl and a vibrantly painted bunting. These sculpted “flights of fancy” will be your new feathered friends, perched in paradise! Join us when Pinecrest Gardens transforms into a magical realm of art and awe for six months starting November 18, 2023. Wandering our pathways, you’ll spot these incredible and interactive Avian Avatars. CONTRIBUTING MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES

Donor support helps to maintain the diverse plant collection and continue efforts for conservation, education and cultural programs. The Garden offers contributing membership levels ($250 – $5,000), sponsorship and general support donations to our non-profit organization Friends of Pinecrest Gardens.

VOLUNTEER CORPS

Pinecrest Gardens’ volunteers are special, hands-on people that have a sense of commitment to their community. Our volunteers care about the Garden and contribute in meaningful ways to our preservation and improvement. We welcome new volunteers who can help in various ways including gardening work, docent at a live concert, and staff support at festivals and special events.
