For over a century The Du Quoin State Fair has attracted fairgoers from all over the Southern Illinois region and beyond. Each year fairgoers can count on the classic comforts of the past as well as the chance to experience the new, unexplored adventures that surely await. We at the Du Quoin State Fair take pride in organizing an event full of pleasant surprises, unexpected twists and, ultimately, unforgettable memories. That being said, at the very foundation of the Du Quoin State Fair is agriculture. Young people having the opportunity to compete, exhibit livestock and learn about agricultural impact is generationally important to sustaining the industry in this region and greater Illinois. So come to the fair and learn something you didn’t already know. See something you haven’t already seen. It’s our honor to welcome you all to the Du Quoin State Fair in 2025. We can’t wait to see you there.

Susan Boswell Memorial Sunshine Picnic at the Du Quoin State Fair

The family of the late Susan Boswell came to visit the annual Susan Boswell Memorial Sunshine Picnic last year at the Du Quoin State Fair. Pictured is the family of Susan Boswell, who attended this year’s picnic in Susan’s honor. Left to Right are: Silas Littlefair (grandson), Julie Littlefair (daughter), Amanda Holmes (daughter), Beth Williams (sister), Curtis Messer (brother-in-law), Sandy Harris (sister), Patty Messer (sister) and William Asa (brother). A picture of the late Susan Boswell is displayed in front of the VIP tent in her honor.

DU QUOIN -The Susan Boswell Memorial Sunshine Picnic was a huge success at the Du Quoin State Fair last year.

The annual Susan Boswell Memorial Sunshine Picnic at the Du Quoin State Fair is a full day of food, entertainment and rides for individuals with developmental disabilities. Nine agencies from across Southern Illinois visited the picnic this year. They enjoyed vendors, entertainment and rides at the fair.

The Sunshine picnic would not exist if it were not for the late Susan Boswell, Job Coach at Our Directions. She began the first sunshine picnic and helped go out and get fair vendors and entertainers to open up for the clients. Verna Webb, Executive Director of Our Directions in Herrin, assisted her in getting the Sunshine Picnic started and Verna continues on each year with the planning of the picnic.

The picnic continues on each year in honor of Susan Boswell who passed away in 2009. She was originally from Du Quoin.

This year’s Susan Boswell Memorial Sunshine Picnic will be held on Tuesday, August 26.

Du Quoin State Fair Announces Twilight Parade Grand Marshal and Theme

DU QUOIN –– Governor JB Pritzker announced that Dr. Glenn Poshard will serve as Grand Marshal for the 2025 Du Quoin State Fair Twilight Parade. The parade theme is “Adventure Awaits!”

Dr. Poshard has over 50 years of public service, serving as the President of Southern Illinois University (SIU) from 2006 to 2014. He formerly served as Vice Chancellor for Administration at SIU Carbondale and as chairman of the SIU Board of Trustees.

A former high school teacher and Carbondale resident, he served more than four-and-a-half years as a state senator in the Illinois General Assembly and 10 years in Congress. In 1999, the White County native founded the Poshard Foundation for Abused Children in southern Illinois. The Foundation has engaged various individuals and agencies to prevent child abuse in 25 downstate communities and has raised over $10 million dollars in support of these children.

“Glenn Poshard dedicated his life to public service through both elected and volunteer roles,” said Governor JB Pritzker. “His passion for the people of southern Illinois makes him uniquely deserving to serve as Grand Marshal for the annual Twilight Parade.”

“As a fixture in southern Illinois and a friend and mentor to many, Glenn Poshard has left his mark in ways both big and small,” said Jerry Costello II, Illinois Department of Agriculture Director. “Glenn is one of the true treasures of Southern Illinois. It’s an honor to have him serve as Grand Marshal of the Du Quoin State Fair where his roots run deep.”
