125 Carat -Editor's Desk Pimpri Toastmasters Club is more than two years old and in this period, the club has grown in leaps and bounds. It has reached higher levels and walked on the path to achieve greater heights. The club has achieved the Diamond Club Award-the highest accomplishment for any club in Toastmasters International. Adding to that, the club and its members have achieved many laurels at Area, Division and District levels. As the club marches beyond the 125th milestone meeting, it is shining brightly like a 125 carat diamond.

The Club's success has been made possible through the committed and dedicated efforts of all members. In the 5th Edition of our bi-annual newsletter, "The Gist", we take a look at all the happenings and accomplishments of the club over the last six months. We have also reached out to Club, Area, District and Division level Officers and presented their insights on the past, present and future of our club.

Special thanks to "The Gist" newsletter team members Amol and Yash, Executive Committee members and all fellow toastmasters for their whole-hearted support.

SHINING LIKE A DIAMOND -PRESIDENT'S DESK I had the privilege of being the Vice President-Public Relation for the Club in my previous tenure but the role of club President was much more challenging.

The Club had taken major strides in achieving the Diamond Club Award under the leadership of previous Executive Committee members. The new Executive Committee members along with the support of fellow Toastmasters continued the march ahead towards achieving the Diamond Club Award.

This has strengthened the Club's foundation and allowed the Club to shine at the Area, Division and District levels.

The continued efforts by members in their endeavour to grow and improve their communication and leadership skills, while helping the Club grow and become strong, During this tenure the Club reminds me of the four beautiful lines from conducted multiple educational sessions the song "Diamonds" by noted American covering a host of speaking and leadership singer "Rihanna". aspects. Adding to this, we had record participation for the club contests, which So shine bright Tonight, showed the club's exuberance.

You and I The faith and trust shown by club members to the Club and Executive committee has encouraged us to work harder for achieving higher laurels for the club at Toastmasters International.

Is People Leadership is for You? -Club Growth Director's Desk Dear Toastmasters, If you ever get a feeling that moving to the next position in Toastmasters or in career is the logical thing to do, pause for a moment and think, 'Is people leadership for you?'

Think about historical leaders. What has made them good?

The worst leadership you have experienced?

How did it make you feel when you were under their leadership?

Pros and Con’s of "YOU" being a leader?

If you come up with answers that tells you this is something you want, then you can consider the leadership position. In my experience, a leader compared to a manager should have the following four focus areas.

People – Your focus should be on relationship building, team building and managing people.

Managing Work – You should be self-directed, change oriented, innovative and result oriented.

Business Acumen – You should understand your organization, business and industry. Also, you should be decisive and a problem solver.

Self-Awareness – Here, you should know your strengths, weakness, emotional quotient and know how others see you.

All the above four should be governed by the values you believe in along with the organization’s values. Over the years, with experience in Toastmasters and in information technology, I can say that leadership can be very lonely. You will have everyone on your side at good times, but, you will be left alone during the times of struggle. You should have an opinion and defend it no matter what! You will come across people who misbehave, but you still have to love them. When you move upwards in the leadership ladder, you should be more focused on people as compared to someone who loves working on the ground and getting things done. A leader can’t brush off his responsibilities and should take action if something is not right.

If all the above is something that you will love to do and are comfortable doing, then the world needs you, the organization needs you, the district needs you, your club needs you.

Learn,Grow & Shine -Area Director's Desk Pimpri Toastmasters Club and its members have been active at Area, Division and District level events. They have participated in all these events in large numbers and played a huge role in their success . This has greatly helped Area C5 and the Club to achieve many laurels.

My experience with Pimpri Toastmasters Club during this tenure was amazing. Pimpri Toastmasters Club has set an example for other clubs and shown everyone that member experience is important for having quality club meetings.

Interview : Division Director -TM Seema Rani ACB,ALS Started just 2.5 years ago, Pimpri Toastmasters Club has matured in its path and marched beyond the 125th milestone meeting. We can proudly say that we are now on the fast track towards our future milestones.

As Division Director of Area C, we would like to hear your thoughts about the Past, Present and Future of our Club.

Seema : Pimpri Toastmasters Club has always been special to me because of the bond and love, all members share amongst each other. Every member is committed towards self enhancement and wholeheartedly supports other members in their quest to become better.

I believe staying focused and being positive is the key for the club to encounter any future challenge.

Under your leadership Division "C" has performed splendidly, what does it take to deliver such a performance ?

Seema : It takes a passionate, sincere and accommodating team's hard work for any leader to stand tall and deliver. I am fortunate to have great support from Area Directors and Club Officers who helped me lead Division C to greater heights.

What are the key highlights of this year for Division C? Seema: 265+ education awards, addition of 6 new Clubs, 14 Distinguished Clubs, 5 Diamond clubs including Pimpri Toastmasters Club, record breaking registrations and attendance at Eloquence 2019 are few of the major highlights for Division C this year.

You have been associated with Pimpri Toastmasters Club right from its inception, what do you think about the Club's journey so far?

Seema: Every time I attend the milestone meeting of Pimpri Toastmasters Club, I feel an instant connect. The Executive Committee has performed exceptionally well and every member has supported the club to the best of their abilities. Overall the club's journey has been phenomenal and I believe the Club is on the right track to achieve greater heights in future.

What according to you are the important things that we as a Club, should keep in mind as we march ahead?

Seema: Ensuring that current members are appreciated, new members respected and members travel the toastmasters journey together, are few things that I believe the club should be mindful of, as it moves ahead.

What has been your major learning while serving as a Division Director?

Seema: Few of the things that I have learnt and understood in greater depths include 1. Stressing less.

2. Serve with no expectations, as that leads to greater happiness 3. Connecting with people and building life long relationships.

Interview - Area Director -TM Harshad Kheira CC,ALB, VC1

Pimpri Toastmasters Club began its journey in 2017 and since then, it has achieved great success and helped many become better communicators and leaders.

As an Area Director, we would like your insights on the club's current happenings and future challenges.

Area C5 has performed exceedingly well this year.

What were the main drivers behind such performance?

Harshad: Well functioning clubs, dedicated member base, committed Club, Area and Division leadership and effective collaboration amongst various stake holders were the main drivers behind Area C5's stupendous performance this year.

What are the key highlights of this year for Area C5 ?

Harshad: Members from area clubs took up key roles at Area, Division and recently concluded District event "Eloquence-2019". In addition to this, many club's continued to do well and received awards such as "Diamond Club Award". There were clubs that came up from the brink of closure to become President's Distinguished Club. Adding to that few members won awards at Division and District level contests and few were recognized for their contributions at the Division and District level. These were few highlights for Area C5 this year.

What were the key challenges that you faced as an Area C5 Director?

Harshad: Club retention due to challenges like company acquisition, merger, demerger and clubs being part of college community where members find it difficult to manage conflicting schedules, were few of the challenges that I faced this year.

As an Area C5 Director what has been the experience like?

Harshad: The experience has been full of learning and wonderful memories, which will be there for lifetime.

How would you rate your experience with Pimpri Toastmasters Club?

How does the path change moving forward for Pimpri Toastmasters Club?

Harshad: I have been part of many meetings at Pimpri Toastmasters Club and I would rate my experience as very highly. One thing that I like in particular about this club is the high respect between club members. The club always surprises me with its innovative activities such as "KBC" – Kaun Banega Chocolatepati and never seen before Public Relations initiatives.

Harshad: Now that the club has achieved stability and great success, it should move forward in helping members become competent leaders and communicators and while doing so it should also play an active role in the success and betterment of other clubs within the area.

How do you think the club has evolved over the last years?

Harshad: The club was charted in 2017 and in a short span, it has achieved "Diamond Club Status", which is a great achievement. The Club has evolved well with a core member base and committed leadership, willing to take leadership roles at Area, Division and District levels. The Club has members like TM Vinod Sharma and TM Pramod Kiwande, who have already served District officers role and play an active role in helping members step up and serve in various capacities.

What advice can you give to other Toastmasters?

Harshad: Toastmasters International offers each one a platform to become a better communicator and a better leader.

The organisation runs programs and events at various levels that helps you understand the finer aspects of leadership and communication. I request all my fellow Toastmasters to be active and take part in these initiatives which will help in their betterment in the long run.

Finally, one thing about Toastmasters that you will cherish forever.

Toastmasters has helped me to become a better version of myself and this is the thing that I will cherish forever.

Interview - Contest Winners International Speech Contest winner at Club,Area C5 and 2nd runner up at Division level .

Jitender, in the international Speech Contest, you won the top TM Jitender Balani prize at the Club contest, Area C5 CC,CL contest and you were the 2nd runner up at the Division C contest. How did you decide the topic for the contest?

The speech was well received by the audience and I carried the same Jitender: I have learnt from experts and modified it for the contest in and senior Toastmasters that topic March 2019. selection is a process. You delivered a speech on the same topic at three different places. Did you tinker with your content to keep it interesting and relevant to your audiences’ tastes?

JItender: I felt, I was sketchy with my delivery during the Club contest, which made me focus more on the delivery at Area Level. To make it more interesting I added humorous content and refined the message.

One thing I learned during this was that the speech should have single central message that should connect with the audience, and be delivered in a way that keeps them interested till the end. In short, I made some additions at each stage to make my speech more interesting for the audience.

Did you consider the stage and audience size while preparing for this speech?

JItender: Stage and audience size doesn’t make a difference while preparing or delivering a speech.

Only thing that I did was arrive a bit early to the venue and get accustomed to the stage area.

What advice would you give to your fellow toastmasters with respect to club contest?

Jitender: Read non-fiction books, newspapers and participate in every club meeting. Make a habit of delivering at least one speech every month and be consistent with it.

Interview - Contest Winners Interview with Table Topics Contest Winner at Club & Area C5 Aashirwad, impromptu speaking is hard and winning the contest at the Area & Club level is even harder. What was your approach for preparing for this contest?

Aashirwad: While preparing for the contest, I read a lot. That helped me with my content. Also, I practiced topics using phrases and noted down topics and snippets from club meetings.

What are the things that you keep in mind when you are on the stage and are given a table topic?

Aashirwad: When the table topic is given, I observe the audience and decide on my focus area. Along with that, I pay careful attention to the words spoken by table topic master and analyse which word can help me start my speech.

Table topics can consist of a range of topics. How do you change your approach based on the topic and your level of knowledge?

Aashirwad: I am an avid reader, this helps me interpret the topic in some way. At times, I try to use the sentence, "That's what happens when you don't know what those two words mean and you are asked to say something on it " and it instantly connects with the audience.

Aashirwad: I explored impromptu speech topics and watched Toastmasters table topics contest videos available on Toastmasters International Website and YouTube.

Did table topics educational sessions organised by the club help you, in anyway?

Aashirwad: I learnt a few tricks about adding humor to my speech and ways to develop content and answers table topic questions.

What advice would you give to fellow toastmasters for improving impromptu speaking skills?

Aashirwad: Read extensively, build a bank of Table Topics and practice table topics as much as possible.

5. Drink buttermilk with amla and turmeric powder to reduce waist size.

6. Drink hot water mixed with a spoon of honey, which can reduce obesity.

Passion To Run "Sometimes life is very hard and tough, even then you should never give up".

My World Marathon Major Journey: My name is Manikandan, I work as a Mechanical Design Engineer at MTU India Private Limited, a Rolls-Royce Power System Company located in Pune . Apart from my regular job, I am a passionate Marathon runner.

Marathon is a long distance race of 42 km distance. I have been competing marathons since 2013 and have completed 14 Marathons including 5 International Marathons so far.

The Abbott World Marathon Majors (AWMM) is a championship-style competition for marathon runners started in 2006. This competition is points-based and includes six major city marathons, which are recognized as high profile races on the marathon calendar.The six cities include Tokyo (Japan), Boston (USA), London (UK), Berlin (Germany), Chicago (USA), and New York City (USA). These 6 events are called World Marathon Majors, because of world class standards, number of spectators, facilities and participants, etc.

If a runner completes these 6 World Marathon Majors, he gets a STAR MEDAL which is the highest achievement for any runner. Globally, less than 5000 runners have got this medal and only 30 Indians have received this recognition.

I started my World Marathon Major in 2016 from New York City Marathon, following which, I have successfully completed Berlin Marathon (Germany, 2017), Tokyo Marathon (Japan. 2018), Chicago Marathon (USA, 2018) and London Marathon (United Kingdom, 2019).

I plan to participate in Boston Marathon (USA) in 2020 and complete my World Marathon Major journey and become one of the few Indians to achieve this rare feat.

My London Marathon Journey : London Marathon is one of the most beautiful marathons in the world. The Marathon starts from a place located around the lovely Themes River side and finishes at Buckingham Palace. I am an amateur runner and have completed many races within my timing goal. I completed two world majors with a timing of 3 Hrs 54 min and 3 Hrs 58 min respectively. For any marathon I run, I aim to finish the 42 km marathon distance in under 4 Hours. For London marathon, I had similar plans.

Unfortunately, I injured my left leg during the Chicago Marathon (2018) and was not able to make a complete recovery in time for the London Marathon. I decided to run the London marathon without any timing goals and test myself in situations as bad as this. To my pleasant surprise, I completed the marathon in 6 hours, well under the actual cut off time of 7 hours 30 min. Though the timing was way off my regular timings, I enjoyed race that was complemented with pleasant weather, friendly crowd and helpful volunteers.

My overall experience was incredible but as an after-effect, my left leg still pains. Like they say, a few things in life is painful and pleasurable at the same time. And London Marathon is one of them. But even then, its an experience, that I will cherish forever.

Whatsapp Detox : "If you have a will you can do anything, without even a WhatsApp"

Like many, I had an habit of wasting time on WhatsApp. Hence, on 31st December 2018, I made a resolution to stop using WhatsApp for 1 month. On 1st Jan 2019, I uninstalled WhatsApp from my phone and started my "Detox". First three days were the hardest. Like an addict, after every few minutes my hand reached out for my mobile to check WhatsApp. This is when I realized how much addicted to WhatsApp, I was!

Being a Toastmaster it was very difficult for me to get important messages circulated through WhatsApp. I was part of various WhatsApp groups formed by the club. Being away from WhatsApp made me miss out on early bird offer for membership renewal and I was unable to register for the Division contest.

For many meetings I got to know about the theme and agenda, only after reaching the venue, a few minutes before the start of meeting.

Adding to that, I was unable to share my project manual with my evaluator. Without WhatsApp, I found it difficult to reach out to my mentor and get my speech checked.

On my birthday, I missed out on the wishes from my well wishers.

Being away from WhatsApp made me miss out the golden opportunity of being associated with Eloquence 2019.

Missing out on above things was bearable and manageable, but managing the role of "Toastmasters Of the Day" without WhatsApp was unmanageable. In spite of this, I persisted with my WhatsApp detox and as a result, I had to personally call all members and request them to take up meeting roles. That time I ended up calling 36 club members.To my knowledge, this was the first time any member from our club would have received a call for a meeting role. By hook and crook I managed role players for meeting and I was able to conduct the meeting successfully. That day I felt a sense of accomplishment and in my mind I said to myself, "If you have a will you can do anything, even without WhatsApp also".

Whatsapp Detox (contd...)

Many Toastmasters have told me how difficult it is to be a Toastmaster without WhatsApp. If you check, WhatsApp started in 2009 and Toastmaster started in 1924. For 85 years, Toastmasters survived without WhatsApp, so it might be difficult but not impossible. Till now I have survived 144 days without WhatsApp, let’s see where it takes me. If you want to measure your WhatsApp addiction just uninstall WhatsApp for a week and check, 'If also need a WhatsApp Detox!

Motive to have a role in Toastmaster’s Meeting Hobbies add colour to our life. and relieve us of our stresses. Do you have a Hobby? Do you find time to pursue them passionately? There are many reasons that came in way of our hobbies and we tend to loose sight of it in the rush of things.

I went through such a phrase few days back. In the rush of my daily life I had lost the pursuit of my hobbies. From my younger days, I used to maintain a dairy, which I use to fill with my thoughts everyday and slowly this become my hobby. Along with it, books have been my friends since ages and reading books also became a hobby as I grew up and started working. But thanks to the daily 9-6 churn, I had lost time and energy to pursue my hobby.

It was in this moment that a few Toastmasters came calling and started asking about my hobbies.

The reason, I had taken up a role at a toastmasters meeting and they were the playing the role of Toastmaster of the Day. Answering them made me doubt my sincerity towards my hobbies. A few times I answered just for the sake of giving an answer. I was able to do this once, twice, thrice but not the fourth time.

While trying to repeat the same set of answer for hobbies for the fourth time, my conscience got better of me. I realized that I had become a machine for whom the routine daily churn mattered more than passionate things like hobbies.

At that moment, I made up my mind, that come what may, I will find time for my hobbies. After many setbacks and failures, I was finally able to work out a schedule which allowed me to give sometime to my hobbies. I can now proudly say to everyone that I am a avid reader and love to maintain a diary. And Toastmasters remember this one thing, 'If you have the will, you will surely find a way! Hail Toastmasters!!!

The Struggles of Our Life : He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hardboiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it.

She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter.

The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners.He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl.

He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.

Turning to her, he asked.

“Daughter, what do you see?”

“Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she hastily replied.“Look closer” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.

“Father, what does this mean?” she asked.He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity-the boiling water. However, each one reacted differently. The potato went in strong, hard and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.However, the ground coffee beans were unique.

After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.“Which one are you?” he asked his daughter.

“When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?”

Moral of the story: In life, things happen around us, things happen to us, but the only thing that truly matters is how you choose to react to it and what you make out of it. Life is all about leaning, adopting and converting all the struggles that we experience into something positive.

The Benefits of Public Speaking : Communication is the backbone of our society. It allows us to form connections, influence decisions and motivate change.

What is public speaking?

Basically, it is a presentation that is given live before the audience.The goal of the speech may be to educate, entertain or influence the listeners. Public speaking is one of the most important forms of communication.

It affects simple, everyday interactions in our life and it can have an enormous impact on one’s career development, business growth and even in the relationships you have with your friends and family.

Over the years, public speaking has played a major role in education, government and business. Every time you speak in public, It increases your self- confidence, improves your power to inform, persuade, educate and even entertain. A spoken word can be more powerful than written word in the hands of the right speaker.

Glossophobia or speech anxiety is the most common fear people have.That is the reason many people avoid public speaking. But the truth is public speaking is a skill that can be learned.

Organizations like Toastmasters International helps collaboratively improve public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs. It has helped people from diverse backgrounds become confident speakers, communicators and leaders.

I too suffer from glossophobia, hence I have joined Pimpri Toastmasters Club to improve my speaking skills and become a confident and a better speaker.

Club Activities: SAARTHI - CLUB MENTORING PROGRAM PTMC celebrated 18th - 22nd June as SAARTHI week under the leadership of TM Amruta; It involved a week full of exciting acts where mentees asked questions to mentors about improvement, growth and path selection. This helped Mentor - Mentee recognition & connect between them.

The initiative was successful with 74% members selecting their path, 18 mentees spoke about their purpose & goals in Toastmasters. Best Mentor Award went to TM Pramod Kiwande (Mentoring 10 speeches from 6 mentees during the term)

PULSE - FEEL THE PROGRESS Each member's progress is tracked through "Weekly Report" and is circulated every Monday to the members.

The data shows how many speeches have been completed by each member and creates an impulse for going forward.

The activity is successful because It's not about the count, It's just that the progress should not stop !

DRONACHARYA EDUCATION SERIES Educational sessions were conducted by experienced Toastmasters from other clubs during the term for the members to learn & inspire.

TM Hemant Arora conducted an educational session under this. Also, we had educational sessions on table topics by TM Niket Rana and TM Jervis Pereira. A session on moments of truth was by conducted by TM Nujhad Kulkarni and two other educational sessions by TM Amruta Pandharkar.

Experience @ PTMC I had a deep desire to improve my communication & leadership skills and came to know about Toastmaster's through online search and attended a few meetings at Pimpri Toastmasters Club. These meetings encouraged me to be part of the Toastmasters family. I have been part of Toastmasters for little over four months and it has helped me greatly in improving my leadership and communication skills. Thanks to Pimpri Toastmasters Club and Executive Committee team for the kind support and guidance.

Experience @ PTMC I was in search of a community club, after I exited from my earlier corporate club. I kept meeting the Club's President and Vice-President Education in different contests forums. Both invited me to explore Pimpri Toastmasters Club and I did it. At first, i liked the venue, it was like a mini auditorium. Club members, especially Executive-Committee is very warm and welcoming. I was introduced to Toastmasters, by my cousin. Initially, not knowing what Toastmasters was all about, I was very intrigued and interested to attend a meeting as a guest. At my very first experience at Table Topics, I fumbled and messed up, but everyone supported and encouraged me to move forward. Eventually, I got opportunities to take up different roles and give speeches which has helped in improving my confidence.

Pimpri Toastmasters Club is an amazing community club that considers its members as family, of which, I'm fortunate to be a part of!

I've learned a lot through my journey here and have made Friends, no "Family" for life and will always cherish the memories I've made and look forward to make many more!!!

Experience @ PTMC I visited Pimpri Toastmasters Club as a guest and found the club to be helpful and supportive to members and guests. Everyone gets an opportunity to talk on stage, make mistakes and grow as a communicator and a leader.

This is the main reason that I joined this club and I am happy to be a Pimpri Toastmasters Club Member.

TM Nillam Thombre I joined toastmasters with the main aim of becoming a better public speaker. But being part of club meetings, hearing to members speeches and evaluations has made me realise that there is more to Toastmasters than just public speaking. Taking up meeting roles and volunteering for club activities has also made me understand that there is much more to communication that just speaking on stage.

At a minimum, Toastmaster gives you practice in developing speeches and getting a feel for how other people perceive them.
