Sony Mar Rebanal, Hair Stylist

When two concertgoers decided to attend a Coldplay concert together in Foxborough, Massachusetts, on July 16, 2025, unbeknownst to them the jumbotron camera zoomed in on their intimate moment. Their awkward attempt to duck out of the camera’s view was broadcast throughout the arena and online. Within hours, the clip had gone viral.

The two concertgoers were later identified as Andy Byron, CEO, and Kristin Cabot, Chief People Officer of Astronomer, a New York-based private data operations company. As the video continued to spread across social media, the two executives were immediately placed on administrative leave as Astronomer’s board of directors launched a formal investigation. Byron resigned in just a matter of days.

As I’m sure you have seen, the viral video sparked memes and questions around workplace ethics particularly since the issue involves top levels of leadership.

Are romantic relationships allowed at work? In general, there is no legislation in Canada that explicitly prohibits romantic relationships at work. However, employers are expected to maintain a respectful, harassment-

free environment. Relationships that create a conflict of interest or lead to harassment may trigger an investigation that may in turn lead to disciplinary action.

What happens when a boss and a subordinate are in a relationship?

When senior leadership becomes entwined in undisclosed personal relationships, it makes it impossible for employees to raise concerns. HR leaders, in particular, are supposed to be stewards of workplace culture, and are responsible for fostering desired employee behaviours. The CEO, on the other hand, as the highestranking executive, is responsible for the overall success of the company, but more importantly, their reputation plays a significant role in how their company image is perceived. When a boss and subordinate are in a relationship, it can fuel perceived preferential treatment, which can negatively impact staff morale. This type of issue can even arise where there is no direct reporting relationship.

In addition, given the power imbalance between a boss and a subordinate, questions may arise among staff as to whether the relationship is truly consensual.

Can a workplace relationship lead to termination? Yes, it can,

Working in healthcare, I meet with many people over the age of 55 and notice that some are doing well, while others struggle. Getting older is a natural part of life, and each person can choose how to live life well and make positive lifestyle choices. Some of these choices include optimizing physical health, mental wellness, relationships and spiritual life.

In the Philippines where family ties, traditions, and community play central roles in everyday life, aging well involves more than just physical health. For the Filipino community, successful aging emphasizes connection to family, friends, and cultural engagement. With proper support and awareness, Filipino seniors can enjoy a fulfilling, dignified, and active life.

1. Maintaining physical health

The foundation of aging well starts with taking care of the body. Chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease are common among older Filipinos, but many of these conditions can be managed or even prevented through lifestyle changes. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper medical care are essential. Traditional Filipino diets are often high in rice, salt, and fried foods. Ulam often does not have lean proteins in it (fish, tofu, beans or chicken breast) or whole grains (brown rice or quinoa). While our eating habits are culturally ingrained starting from when we

were little children, we can start eating healthier by making small changes. Don’t start by making big diet changes, because this can cause stress with food being unfamiliar. Instead, we can begin by eating more fruits and vegetables and eating smaller portions of white rice. Over time, you can add in new foods.

Limiting processed foods and sugary drinks is also key. Don’t buy too many snacks that come in colourful packages! Treats such as ensaymada and bubble tea should be occasional only. Encouraging the elderly to eat smaller, more nutritious meals can help maintain energy levels and prevent malnutrition.

Exercise is equally important.

Activities such as walking, gardening, or even light stretching can significantly improve mobility, heart health, and mental wellbeing. Barangays and senior citizen organizations can help by organizing weekly physical activity programs, which also foster social connection. In Winnipeg, Zumba classes are becoming more popular.

Regular medical check-ups and medication adherence are very important. Many Filipino seniors delay seeking medical help due to financial concerns or accessibility. In Canada we are fortunate to get universal healthcare, so prioritize getting a family doctor that you see regularly.

2. Emotional and mental wellbeing Mental health among elderly

Lessons from the “kiss cam” fiasco

but it depends on the situation. A supervisor engaged in a romantic relationship with a subordinate is risky business. Most employers have policies addressing sexual harassment and conflict of interest. These policies are tools used by employers to convey their expectations of their staff and their management team. For example, in the case of Reichard v. Kuntz Electroplating, the Ontario court upheld the dismissal of a longserving manager for failure to disclose his romantic relationship with a subordinate, which violated their company policy. Interestingly, this case also included evidence whereby the plaintiff had falsified an “emergency day” in order to attend a concert with his subordinate.

When leaders fail to disclose a conflict of interest, it creates liability for the company. Where a romantic relationship exists between a superior and a subordinate, it is the employer’s responsibility to take immediate steps to ensure that conflicts of interest are prevented. For employees considering a workplace romance, it would be a good idea to understand your company’s policies and to avoid having relations with a direct supervisor. If you are currently dating a coworker or a supervisor, as awkward as it may be, it is best

practice to make your employer aware as there are risks associated with hiding the relationship. And again, reviewing your company’s conflict of interest policy would be a good idea. This article is intended for information purposes only and not to be considered as professional advice.

Aging with grace, dignity, and peace

Filipinos is often overlooked. There is a stigma around asking for help. We emphasize avoiding “loss of face” or bringing shame to ourselves and the family. But unfortunately, depression, loneliness, and cognitive decline such as dementia are increasing issues. These challenges increase when elderly individuals live alone or feel neglected by their families.

Our Filipino cultural attitudes can help, but they can also damage mental health. The Filipino value of pakikipagkapuwa-tao (shared identity and empathy) and utang na loob (debt of gratitude) foster strong family bonds, which can provide emotional support. However, these values can sometimes pressure elderly individuals to suppress their own needs and hide how they are really doing. Open communication within families is essential to ensure seniors feel heard and supported.

Throughout aging, it is important to find meaning as a way to have mental wellness. Hobbies, volunteer work, and lifelong learning activities like community classes or online courses can give seniors a renewed sense of purpose.

Religious activities, which are deeply embedded in Filipino life, also offer spiritual strength and a sense of belonging.

3. Social support and community engagement

In Filipino culture, the elderly are traditionally respected and cared for within extended families. However, modernization, migration, and urbanization have led to changes in family structures.

More seniors are living apart from their children or in nursing homes; situations that can lead to isolation.

To age well, social connection is crucial. This is why visits and parties are so common in the Filipino culture. Community centres and senior citizens’ associations can also play an active role in connecting elderly Filipinos through social events, group outings, and skills training. Intergenerational programs, where seniors can share knowledge and mentor the youth, also promote mutual respect and understanding. Access to technology can also help bridge the gap between seniors and distant family members.

Teaching basic digital skills, like using mobile phones, Facebook, or video calling, can help seniors stay connected, especially when loved ones live in another country.

4. Financial stability and independence

Financial challenges are a major concern for many elderly Filipinos, especially those who lack pensions or savings. While the Canadian government provides CPP, OAS and sometimes GIS, it is often not enough. Unfortunately, some Filipinos engage in chronic gambling which can be a destructive behaviour that can damage financial stability and family relationships. If this is a concern for you, make changes by getting involved in other activities and talking to someone that you trust.

To help seniors age with dignity, programs that offer part-time employment, income-

generating activities, or financial literacy training can be valuable.

Many older Filipinos still have the capacity and desire to work or contribute to their families. Recognizing their capabilities and giving them the tools to maintain independence empowers them and enhances their quality of life.

5. Cultural values and respect for the elderly

Lastly, aging well in the Filipino context is strongly tied to cultural values. Respect for elders, manifested through gestures like mano po and using polite language, is a hallmark of Filipino society. However, these traditions must be preserved not just in greetings or light conversation, but also when having deep and meaningful conversations with our Filipino seniors.

True respect means ensuring that elderly individuals are not merely tolerated, but are integrated into decision-making, listened to, and treated with dignity. Elderly care must be a shared responsibility, not just of families, but of the wider society.

To age well as a Filipino elderly person means more than staying physically healthy. It means staying connected, respected, and engaged in life. With proper healthcare, social and family support, financial security, and recognition of their valuable role in society, Filipino seniors can live their later years with purpose, pride, and peace.

Why aqua exercise works wonders

DEAR MAYO CLINIC:

We have a new fitness facility nearby. The pool schedule shows a number of aqua exercise classes. I’d like to try a water fitness class to add variety to my regular fitness routine, but can I really get a good workout in water?

ANSWER: Regular exercise provides a wide range of benefits, including weight management, improved cardiovascular health and sleep quality. But for many people, common forms of exercise, such as walking, running and weight training, are a struggle due to pain, weakness, mobility issues or fear of falling.

Aquatic exercise is an excellent way to focus on fitness in a gravityreduced environment. Here’s why:

• Buoyancy. When standing waist-deep in water, buoyancy reduces your body weight by 50 per cent, making this form of exercise very low impact. This significantly reduces the stress on your weightbearing joints and bones.

• Support. Water provides support for people with balance problems. The constant movement of water during a workout also challenges a person’s balance. The more waves there are, the harder it is to balance and exercise.

• Resistance. Water’s viscosity slows movement and provides resistance, making aquatic exercise a great, resistance-training workout. With less joint stress, people find they can work out longer and do more repetitions.

All these benefits make water

exercise an effective option for anyone recovering from a sports injury to regain range of motion, strength and endurance.

But these benefits also mean you can get a good, overall workout that improves strength, cardio and flexibility. As with any exercise, check with your healthcare team before starting a new routine.

Five things to know before jumping into the pool

1. Aquatic exercise is versatile.

Aquatic exercise offers a variety of options and techniques for almost all levels of physical ability. These range from basic, such as walking in the water, to more highlevel aerobic activities, such as deep-water running or swimming.

Standing exercises often are performed in water that’s waist to chest deep, and they typically focus on improving range of motion/ flexibility, balance and strength. Resistance training can be amplified by simply increasing the speed and range of movement or adding equipment that increases drag, such as webbed mitts, paddles, noodles or bands.

2. You don’t need to know how to swim.

Having a basic knowledge of swimming or water safety is a good idea for anyone who’s around water, but aquatic exercise doesn’t necessarily involve swimming.

The shallow end of any pool or lake will do, since for many of the movements, you only need to be able to stand in the water.

3. Water temperature is

You’ve diligently saved in an RESP (Registered Education Savings Plan) to fund your child’s education. Now it’s time to withdraw the money – but how exactly does this process work?

When you’re ready to withdraw from your RESP, you’ll first need proof that your child is enrolled in a qualifying post-secondary program. Generally, this program must last at least three consecutive weeks with a minimum of 10 hours per week.

There are two primary ways to withdraw from an RESP. The first is called Educational Assistance Payments (EAP), which includes earnings and government grants. These funds are taxable but are considered income for your child, usually resulting in a lower tax rate. The second type, PostSecondary Education Payments

(PSE), involves the original contributions you’ve made. These contributions can be withdrawn tax-free at any time, provided your child is enrolled in post-secondary education. Withdrawal limits are structured around timing. During the first 13 weeks (approximately 90 days) of your child’s studies, EAP withdrawals are typically capped at $5,000 for full-time studies and $2,500 for part-time

important.

Aquatic exercise in lower water temperatures (28º to 31º C) is generally best for higher-level intensity exercise or people who are prone to overheating, such as those who are pregnant, obese or have multiple sclerosis. Aquatic exercise in warmer temperatures (29º to 33º C) is better for people with arthritis, fibromyalgia or pain, as well as those who are frail.

4. Be aware of your abilities.

With the increased ease of exercise in water, people often can tolerate longer exercise sessions. As a result, these sessions can be more intense, with larger ranges of motion, which creates the potential of overstressing your body. You may be more fatigued than expected following an aquatic exercise session.

5. Consider group exercises to mix it up.

Group aquatic exercise classes are a great way to socialize, build connections, find support, increase

accountability and stay motivated to continue exercising. Classes often are led by instructors who have special training in exercising in an aquatic environment. The instructors can offer suggestions for adjusting exercises for individual participants, if needed.

Beyond the basics

Amping up your water workout on your own or in a class may include resistance equipment such as:

• Foam dumbbells. Lightweight on land, they provide resistance underwater through flotation. They come in a variety of resistance options.

• Water weights. Strap-on ankle or wrist weights increase resistance during arm and leg exercises.

• Hand paddles and resistance gloves. They enhance strength training.

• Buoyancy belt. Helps keep your head above water in the deep end while leaving your hands free. You can run, lift weights and do other workouts using your hands without having to tread water. People often enjoy working out more in water than on land.

When they’re not in pain or afraid of falling and are having fun, it encourages them to exercise more consistently. You can even get in a good workout without getting your hair wet.

RESP withdrawal options

studies. After this initial period, there are no official withdrawal caps; however, the withdrawals should be reasonable and closely related to educational expenses. If your child decides not to pursue post-secondary education, you still have several options.

You can choose to wait, as RESPs remain active for up to 36 years, giving your child ample time to reconsider their educational path. Alternatively, if your RESP is a family plan, you can easily transfer the funds to another child within your family who plans to pursue higher education. Additionally, you retain the option to withdraw your original contributions at any time without tax implications.

Another alternative is an Accumulated Income Payment (AIP). If your RESP has been active for at least 10 years and your child is over 21, you can withdraw the accumulated earnings and grants. Be mindful, though – this withdrawal is subject to your marginal tax rate and an additional 20 per cent penalty unless transferred directly into your RRSP, subject to contribution limits.

Lastly, you can simply cash out the RESP funds directly, paying

any applicable taxes and penalties. Typically, this means forfeiting the government grants and paying taxes plus a 20 per cent penalty on accumulated income. Understanding these withdrawal procedures allows you to effectively manage your RESP, ensuring it aligns with your family’s evolving educational and financial needs.

My search for a complete set of the leadership of the Philippine Association of Manitoba (PAM) led me to pay a visit to Dr. Reynaldo “Rey” D. Pagtakhan, together with Felino de Jesus, Western Canada Knights of Rizal Regional Commander (2023 to present), who is also a pioneer activist of the Philippine Solidarity Group and a long-time supporter of Magdaragat. Dr. Pagtakhan is a Canadian physician, professor, and politician, having been elected to parliament and serving as a cabinet minister in the governments of Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin.

Dr. Pagtakhan is also known to be responsible for unifying the two pioneer community organizations in Winnipeg – the Filipino Canadian Association, which was mostly composed of doctors and nurses, formed on August 25, 1962, and the Kayumanggi Club, established by nurses in 1967. This amalgamation led to the formation of the Philippine Association of Manitoba in 1969 (Dalayoan, Magsino, and Bailon, The First Filipino Immigrants in Manitoba (1959-1975), pp 8081). The Fil Can Association was formed to help newcomers adjust to Canadian life, induce them to stay, and maintain Filipino culture and heritage. On the other hand, Kayumanggi was perceived to be nationalistic by showcasing and promoting Philippine cultural heritage (Dalayoan et al, p. 81).

Eventually, PAM would blend the community programs of Fil Can and Kayumanggi, becoming the third oldest Filipino organization in Winnipeg. (This updates my previous article titled, “Philippine Association of Manitoba Revisited,” published in the Pilipino Express). After a little kamustahan

Dr. Rey retrieved the 1970 PAM souvenir program and showed it to me and Kuya Felino de Jesus. It has the list of the founding officers of PAM.

The book, The First Filipino Immigrants in Manitoba, affirms the election of Dr. Rey Pagtakhan as president, Chris Gonzalez as first vice-president, and Manny Garcia as second vice-president, and also mentions Chit Richard as secretary, and Nena Lomibao as treasurer, based on an interview with Virginia Guiang (2005). However, the document that was shared by Dr. Pagtakhan provides more information.

I have already researched most of the PAM officers through the years. The 1970 PAM souvenir program kept by Dr. Pagtakhan records and preserves the information about its founding officers. The officers for the years 1977 up to 2000 had been published in Silangan and the Filipino Journal, which are available in the Archives of Manitoba. As of this date, I still need to check if there is any information in the archives from 1971 to 1976. Records of the board of representatives under Les Crisostomo’s presidency are yet to be found. Unfortunately, a lot of the old guard who may have the information have already passed away. According

to Silangan founder Ted Alcuitas (July 10, 2025), the newspaper started operating in February 1976, making it the earliest community newspaper. I am grateful to Dr. Rey Pagtakhan for welcoming us and to Felino de Jesus for the encouragement and company in doing the interview. They are my Knights of Rizal brothers and pioneers in the community since the 1970s.

It is my wish that the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (PCCM), successor of PAM, would organize a communitylevel conference to sum up the community’s narrative from 1962 to 2015, at least. Part of this conference would be the submission of papers covering the missing years in the organization’s timeline to complete the documentation of the last fifty years. This would be

Pia Wurtzbach turns heads at SONA 2025

Represents OFWs and HIV awareness

Filipino pride Pia Wurtzbach made a surprise appearance at the 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28, held at the Batasang Pambansa in Quezon City. Clad in a striking all-white modern terno, the former Miss Universe drew attention not just for her fashion, but for the meaningful causes she represented.

Pia attended the SONA as the newly appointed ambassador of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and long-time advocate with the HIV awareness group LoveYourself.

Earlier this month, she visited Saudi Arabia to personally connect with overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), promoting health and wellness, and

bringing messages of support and empowerment.

Joining her at the SONA was OWWA Administrator PY Caunan. In a statement, LoveYourself said Pia’s presence at the event reflects her dedication to inclusion, progress, and vital conversations that uplift communities.

Filipinos praised Pia not only for her beauty but for using her platform to amplify important issues. One fan commented, “Napakalakas ng dating ni Pia, grabe. At napakahumble ng pag-ngiti.”

From the Miss Universe stage to the halls of Congress, Pia continues to use her voice for causes close to the hearts of many Filipinos, both at home and abroad.

From page A8 useful in summing up the Winnipeg Filipino diaspora. If anyone has additional information about PAM, please feel free to get in touch with me. I would like to hear from you.

Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli launch their own record label

Power couple Sarah Geronimo and Matteo Guidicelli have taken a bold new step in their careers with the launch of their own record label, G Music.

Matteo shared the exciting news on Instagram, calling it the fulfillment of a long-time dream.

“After years of dreaming, planning, and learning… my wife Sarah and I are proud to announce the launch of G Music, Sarah’s very own recording label,” he wrote.

More than a business move, the couple sees G Music as a platform for Sarah to gain full creative and financial ownership of her music after 22 years in the industry. “She takes the next step: not just to be creatively empowered, but to own the music she creates; her work, her art, her legacy,” Matteo added.

G Music was built with values of collaboration, respect, and transparency. While initially focused on Sarah’s journey, the couple also plans to support other artists who share their vision.

Their first release is an exciting collaboration with global P-pop sensation SB19. Coming soon.

Celebrity friends like Ogie Alcasid, Ryan Agoncillo, and Janine Gutierrez have publicly congratulated the couple on their new venture.

Beyond the business, Matteo and Sarah have just returned home after enjoying some welldeserved couple time in Europe.

Bravo!

A night of vocal power

Three powerhouse Filipino singers – Sofronio Vasquez III, Bituin Escalante, and Jed Madela – are joining forces for the first time in a one-night-only concert titled Bravo! on August 23 at The Theatre at Solaire in Parañaque City.

The trio, known for their stellar vocals and show-stopping performances, promises a night to remember. “This is the first time we’re performing as a trio,” said Jed. “There will always be a song or two for everyone from different generations and genres. But OPM will be the core.”

For Sofronio, the youngest in the group and winner of The Voice US, this marks another milestone in

his rising career.

“This is an achievement for me. I’ve looked up to them for so long, and now I get to perform with them,” he shared.

Bituin echoed the excitement: “I’ve watched both of them, and it’s the kind of performance I really enjoy.”

All three artists are regulars on ABS-CBN’s ASAP, where their segments often feel like mini concerts. Still, putting together Bravo! was creatively challenging.

“We’re working with amazing creatives with fresh ideas; things that haven’t been done before,” said Jed. “We’re excited. These are real Bravo! moments,” added Bituin.

I’m feeling a bit nostalgic, and I find myself reminiscing about the good ol’ days more and more in my old age. I recently celebrated a milestone birthday. More on that later.

Nearly 30 years ago I began my professional journey as a broadcaster. Fresh out of college I got my first job as a radio announcer working midnights at CKJS 810 AM. For those born this millennium, AM is a frequency band on the radio usually found on car or household radios. I’m being cheeky, but really, when was the last time a teenager listened to the radio? I know my kids don’t.

Working as a radio DJ was a blast! I played the songs for those who listened between midnight and 8:00 a.m. I would eventually take on more roles at the radio station, eventually becoming a sidekick on the drive home show with the one and only Ate Emmie Joaquin. It was there I worked on my Taglish. I’ll forever be thankful for the mentorship of Ate Em as she’s been a consistent supporter over the years.

Today, I find myself writing another article in the Pilipino Express News Magazine, something I have been doing for nearly 20 years. I would typically write every month but as of late, work and life has been kicking my butt and I’ve not been able

to submit. When I do write, my articles typically focus on family adventures with a heavy dose of satire. I take pleasure knowing that a part of my history lies within the pages (and online) of the Pilipino Express

So where am I going with this? I turned 50 years old this past July and I was feeling pretty good about it. It all changes when people say, “50! How do you feel?” or “It all goes downhill from here!” I keep telling myself that it’s just a number. That seems to help.

Younger me always thought 50 was all about using a cane and suffering from a sore back. I was partly right as a stiff back in the morning is a common occurrence. It’s probably because I still act like a 20-year-old trying to keep 90s hip-hop dancing alive.

That said, I feel I am healthier now than when I was in my 30s, all thanks to advice I received from friends, health professionals, and those that are living well into their 80s and beyond.

I would like to give a special shoutout to my wife, Elizabeth, who was able to pull off the surprise of the century. Leading up to my big day, we spoke about going out for a family dinner, nothing too extravagant. I was asked what I wanted for my birthday and my answer was either a video arcade or a visit from my mom. Knowing

Feeling 50 and nostalgic

how my mom doesn’t care to travel anymore I figured now is the year I get my Golden Tee stand up arcade. Fast forward to today, I still don’t have my arcade, but I did get to enjoy a home cooked meal by my very own mom!

Nanay and Ate Net came for a surprise visit after telling me for months they’d love to come but couldn’t – and I believed them!

But wait, there’s more! The next day my cousin Den and daughter

Jasmine showed up and the guests kept coming. Some as close as Vancouver, many from Alberta and Manitoba and one as far away as Toronto! Needless to say, I was extremely thankful and honoured that so many made the trip for little old me.

I have been told we get more emotional as we age. I can, unequivocally, agree with that statement. I cry more watching TV commercials (millennials, you

may have to Google what those are) or TikToks of people rescuing penguins (seems oddly specific). I’ll stop now before I start sounding like a “boomer.”

The good ol’ days are not just behind me; there are still many to be made! Now excuse me while I use my massager to work on my sore back.

Engineer Rogelio Calderon

Engineer Rogelio “Roger” Calderon, the first known Filipino to be registered as a Professional Engineer (P. Eng.) in Manitoba, has officially retired from BC Hydro on June 30, 2025, marking the end of a remarkable career spanning nearly five decades.

Originally from Bauang, La Union, Roger began his Canadian journey in Winnipeg in 1978, driven by love and determination. Despite the obstacles often faced by internationally trained professionals, he worked his way from labour-intensive jobs to earning his P. Eng. designation in Manitoba in 1981, a hard-earned achievement that paved the way for a flourishing career in electrical engineering.

Roger moved to British Columbia in 1989, eventually joining BC Hydro, where his

expertise and work ethic earned him the respect of his peers and the top management. His recent retirement party was a fitting tribute to his legacy, attended by colleagues, family, and friends, with heartfelt messages of gratitude from BC Hydro’s leadership team. Though he may have left Manitoba decades ago, Roger’s story remains deeply rooted in the province’s Filipino Canadian history. He blazed a trail for generations of Filipino engineers in Canada, many of whom still draw inspiration from his journey.

Pilipino Express is proud to revisit and celebrate his achievements, not just for where he ended up, but for where he began. His life is a testament to perseverance, love, and the enduring impact of those who dared to dream big and work hard.

Crafting for a Cure brings smiles to Winnipeg

Crafting joy, one kit at a

On July 21, the Best Western Premier Winnipeg East became more than just a hotel. It transformed into a hub of compassion and creativity, thanks to Crafting for a Cure, a nationwide initiative that brings smiles to the faces of children battling illness in hospitals.

Dozens of volunteers from all walks of life – families, youth groups, co-workers, and caring individuals – joined three heartwarming sessions to assemble cheerful craft kits filled with colouring books, stickers, seasonal games, and thoughtful handmade surprises. Every item was chosen with care to offer young patients a moment of joy, distraction, and imagination in what is often a frightening and lonely environment.

The event was led by Pamela Bielak, the passionate founder of Crafting for a Cure, who flew in to personally thank volunteers and share the moving story behind her mission. What began as a simple gesture of kindness has grown into a national nonprofit, reaching hospitals in cities across Canada.

Importantly, the craft kits created in each city stay in that city, ensuring that children in local hospitals receive the care and kindness of their own communities. In Winnipeg, that means the kits made with love by Manitobans will stay in Manitoba; delivered to young patients in St. Boniface Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and

others across the province. “Hospital stays are scary, especially for children,” Bielak shared. “These kits remind them they’re not alone and that someone out there cares.”

time to follow @crafting4acureca for future events and opportunities to help. In a world often overwhelmed by bad news, this day was a powerful reminder that hope, joy, and community spirit are alive and well in Winnipeg.

Among those who rolled up their sleeves were a full volunteer team from Vickar Automotive Group, along with staff and supporters from St. Boniface and Children’s Hospital. Their presence showed that when communities come together, even small acts of kindness can create ripples of healing.

Volunteers were treated to a BBQ lunch and dinner as a thankyou, while organizers reminded everyone that the mission doesn’t end here. Donations of craft supplies are still welcome yearround, and the public is encouraged

Because sometimes, all it takes is a few crayons, a sticker sheet, and a little love to brighten a hospital room and a child’s day.

Two Philippine Pavilions bring the islands to Winnipeg

Winnipeg is once again transforming into a vibrant global village with the return of Folklorama 2025, running from August 3 to 16. With 43 cultural pavilions lighting up the city, this year’s festival promises to be an unforgettable celebration of multiculturalism, and the Philippines is taking centre stage with not one, but two dazzling pavilions.

Now in its 55th year, Folklorama remains the largest and longest-running multicultural festival of its kind in the world; a title recognized by the International Council of Organizations of Folklore Festivals and Folk Arts (CIOFF). Since its humble beginning in 1970 as a one-time event for Manitoba’s centennial, it has evolved into a worldclass celebration of cultural diversity and understanding, powered by passionate volunteers, talented performers, and enthusiastic community support.

In Week 1 (August 3 to 9), the spotlight shines on the Mabuhay Philippine Pavilion at the Philippine Canadian Centre of Manitoba (737 Keewatin St.). Making its debut this year, the new pavilion showcases the cultural richness of Luzon, the largest island in the Philippines. Enjoy semi-theatrical performances of traditional and modern folk dances, savour mouthwatering Filipino dishes like adobo, pancit, and shish kebabs, San Miguel Beer, and dance the night away at the exciting latenight party!

In Week 2 (August 10 to16), head to the Pearl of the Orient Philippine Pavilion at the St. Norbert Community Centre (3450 Pembina Hwy). Hosted by Magdaragat Philippines Inc., this pavilion offers graceful performances, authentic cuisine including pancit guisado and Red Horse beer, and a stunning display of Filipino artifacts celebrating the Filipino spirit of family and community.

Get ready to travel the world without leaving Winnipeg and be sure to make the Philippines your top destination!

Kyline Alcantara Rising to new heights in 2025

At just 22 years old, Kyline Nicole Aquino Alcantara continues her steady ascent as a multi-talented star under GMA’s Sparkle Artist Center. Since gaining fame as Cheska De Villa in Kambal, Karibal (2017 - 2018), she has moved confidently into more mature and complex roles.

In late 2024, fans buzzed when she began starring in the Philippine adaptation of the Korean drama Shining Inheritance, playing notorious kontrabida Joanna Dela Costa – a bold return to villainous territory that challenged her comfort zone. The series extended into early 2025, delivering strong performances each week.

April 2025 marked her bigscreen moment: she signed on to Beauty Empire, a fierce, high-stakes drama about ambition, power, and the beauty world, where she joins a cast including Barbie Forteza, Ruffa Gutierrez, and Sid Lucero Kyline described the project with playful confidence: “I’m back by popular demand…I came to slay and be successful.”

By November, Kobe publicly confirmed they were dating in an interview with Cosmopolitan Philippines. The pair shared affectionate moments, holding hands in Bonifacio Global City, attending fashion events together, and even traveling to Los Angeles as a couple in January 2025. However, by mid-April 2025, they unfollowed each other on Instagram and removed their joint photos online, signalling a breakup. Kobe’s mother, Jackie Forster, confirmed the split and publicly accused Kyline of a “toxic” and even physically aggressive relationship, describing the period since January as fraught with difficulties. Before Kobe, she had previous high-profile relationships with Mavy Legaspi (2021–2023) and Darren Espanto in her early teens, who described their romance as “puppy love.”

A tourism management major by education, she has evolved from talented child star into a confident young woman intent on making her mark in Philippine entertainment.

Off-screen, Kyline’s presence is equally commanding. She stunned at New York Fashion Week in September 2024, opening Chris Nick’s Spring/Summer 2025 show in an all-black ensemble that emphasized her emerging stature in fashion circles. Most recently, in June 2025, she captured the spotlight at the MEGA Ball: Fashion + Dance in a “revenge dress” by Chris Nick that fused elegance and youthful sensuality. Kyline also connects deeply with her audience. Her Instagram and TikTok content – ranging from candid behind-the-scenes glimpses to motivational reels – reflects her vulnerability and resilience as a public figure.

Her most recent relationship made headlines in 2024 when Alcantara began dating basketball star Kobe Paras. Fans first speculated about their romance in May 2024, as social media posts hinted at their connection.
