WINNIPEG – “When the Speaker of the House phones, asking you to meet her at the Legislature, you go,” explains Flor Marcelino, MLA for Logan. Marcelino went on to describe the “complete surprise” awaiting her and a handful of other past and present female MLAs and officers who were honoured on August
20 for forging new pathways for women by holding positions traditionally held by men in the legislature. The Trailblazers of the First 100 Years Wall was unveiled in a small, surprise ceremony to celebrate the achievements of women who “changed the landscape” of the Manitoba
Legislative Assembly. In 1916, Manitoba women were first granted the right to vote and run for public office. Over the next 100 years, only 51 women have been elected to the Manitoba Legislature as MLAs and a small number of women have served as Officers of the Legislative See TRAILBLAZERS p4
Canada ditches family immigration lottery The Government of Canada said on August 20 that it is getting rid of the family reunification lottery and going back to a firstcome, first-served immigration policy as it looks to quadruple times the number of applications accepted when the program reopened in 2014, and the cap was set at 5000 applications. Canada will accept up to 20,000 applications for the sponsorship of parents and grandparents in 2019. The method of selecting applications will return to the former “first-come, first-served” policy, replacing the current random lottery method.
