WINNIPEG – A new organization of former immigrants and refugees in Winnipeg hosted a celebration of International Human Rights Day on Thursday, December 10, 2015 with more than 300 invited immigrants, newcomers and supporters, including some Syrian refugees already settled in Manitoba The group, called Stronger Together Manitoba, represents as many as 18 communities and agencies that have come together to offer their first-hand knowledge and experience to help with the settlement of Syrian refugees currently arriving in Canada. Together Manitoba on International Human Rights Day also served to honour the contributions of newcomers to our province as well as other Manitobans who have assisted in the settlement of newcomers. “As those who were once helped to settle in the community, we now act as members of the community in helping other immigrants and refugees to have a positive experience as they transition into life in our province, starting with Syrian refugees,” said Alan Wise, Communications Chair of the organization, who is also a former refugee from Iran. Radio and Warda Ahmed of West Central Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Services emceed the evening’s event with guest speakers Albert McLeod and Strini Reddy. The group Peaceful Village and members of the Bosnian, Burundi and Filipino communities entertained the guests. Sponsors of the event were the Winnipeg Foundation, the Province of Manitoba, the Social Planning Council of Winnipeg, United Way of Winnipeg and, the Central Neighbourhoods Development Corporation, with the participation of the Aurora Family Therapy Centre, Daniel McIntyre Collegiate Institute and, the Immigrant and Refugee Community of Manitoba.
