Steelmaker ships first Pilbara iron ore By Ben Leahy Chinese steelmaker Citic Pacific last week shipped the first iron ore from its $7 billion Pilbara project. Citic’s Sino Iron project 100km south-west of Karratha is the largest magnetite operation in Australia and involves mining magnetite ore with a low percentage of iron content, which can then be refined into a high-grade product. Tassie Lockyer, Lily McKay, Yindjibarndi chief executive Michael Woodley, Selleck Walker, Karella Walker, Rio Tinto’s Clayton Walker, and David Cheedy. Photo by Aaron Bunch.

The project faced major technical difficulties and ran four years behind schedule and $4 billion over budget.

Rio Tinto land use funds get Yindjibarndi moving

However Premier Colin Barnett said the completion of its first stage was a major boost for Western Australia’s emerging magnetite iron ore industry, which has 29 mine sites in planning and development.

By Ben Leahy

“Western Australia has significant magnetite resources and this type of premium, value-added ore is preferred by many Chinese steel mills.”

YAC community manager Rhys George said the vehicles would be available for use by schools, art groups, elders needing transport and the Ngurrawanna Rangers. “Having their own vehicle helps communities make a small step towards independence and self-determination,” he said.

“A reliable vehicle is something that many people take for granted, but in remote communities they can be hard to find,” he said. “These vehicles will definitely make it easier for people in our community to get into town to do things like shopping and banking.”

He added that the recently formed Ngurrawaana Rangers would use the vehicle for their weed management program and caring-for-country work. Chairperson of the Ngurrawaana Aboriginal Corporation Ricky Smith thanked the Yindjibarndi Trust for the vehicles.

With Citic shipping its iron ore through the newly constructed Cape Preston port 100km from Karratha, Mr Barnett said the project was having a significant impact on the Pilbara economy.

The project also employed more than 4000 people at peak construction and would create 1000 permanent jobs in full operation. “Sino Iron is one of China’s biggest investments in the Australian resources sector and, at full capacity, will be the biggest single-stage magnetite project in the world,” Mr Barnett said. However, the project has also attracted plenty of media interest due to the legal battle between Citic Pacific and billionaire Clive Palmer over control of the Cape Preston port. With the matter still pending in the federal court, Citic has been stockpiling ore at Cape Preston since it began production in July. However, now that Citic has launched its first shipment, it appears the company believes it has found a way out of the dispute. The project is expected to have a 30-year lifespan and involved the construction of a mine, concentrator, desalination plant, power plant and port Once in full operation, the mine is expected to produce 27.6 million tonnes per annum of iron ore concentrate.

The Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) has distributed the first public funds from its land use agreement with miner Rio Tinto after it donated two vehicles to the Ngurrawaana and Cheeditha communities. The Yindjibarndi traditional owners signed the agreement with Rio last June. It allows the miner access to Yindjibarndi lands in return for an unspecified amount of compensation money and a commitment by Rio Tinto to create training, employment and business opportunities for Yindjibarndi people for the duration of its operations. The funds from the land use agreement are now managed by the Yindjibarndi Trust, which

purchased the two vehicles for the Ngurrawaana and Cheeditha communities.

“The Sino Iron project is the first magnetite mine to reach production in the Pilbara,” he said.

He said almost 60 per cent of the project’s $4.8 billion Australian expenditure so far was spent in WA.

Mulataga housing lots to be on sale by 2014 By Ben Leahy Karratha is set to get another housing boost after construction on the Mulataga residential development in the town’s east began last week. The development will eventually become Karratha’s first waterfront suburb and includes plans for 2000 homes, schools, a retail and dining precinct and coastal foreshores. It will also contain a mix of apartments and larger family housing options. However, the first stage of the project will concentrate primarily on the construction of residential lots and will not include any waterfront properties. Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said he expects Mulataga to be among the best addresses in town, calling the development the “new Baynton West”. “To be able to bring Karratha to the waterfront of Nickol Bay through this Mulataga subdivision is really exciting, and I think they will be some of the best lots in town,” he said. “They are starting here close to Bulgarra … [but there are] still really nice water views from this position.” Mulataga follows on from the recent Jingarri and Tambrey Balmoral Road developments and comes as Karratha’s housing stocks begin to catch up with demand after a decade of shortages driven by the mining boom. With average sale prices of houses in Karratha at $529,000

for a three bedroom, they are now the lowest since June 2009, according to the Pilbara Development Commission. Average rental prices have also fallen in each of the past eight quarters to $1207 per week, or $500 less than the average prices in September 2011. Speaking at the launch of the Tambrey Balmoral Road estate in October, Mr Grylls said he thought prices were approaching a “true” value for the Pilbara. “[Housing] prices are not what you would call Perth normal but for the Pilbara we are probably getting close to normal,” he said. “There is a lot more product to come on … [and] the great thing up here is I don’t think there has been a cliff. “It has been a gradual decline [in prices], it certainly hasn’t been a collapse and properties are all still positively geared.”

Mulataga developer Mirvac said it expected to press ahead with construction of the waterfront areas by 2016, but retained the option to delay further construction if housing prices fell too low. However, Mirvac’s Kim Lawrence said he expected strong demand from buyers because Mulataga would offer a greater variety in the size of available lots compared to other estates in town. Under plans submitted to the Shire of Roebourne earlier this year, up to 20 per cent of the development is expected to be high-density apartment blocks three to four storeys high. Another 16 per cent is to be medium density at two storeys high and roughly 50 per cent is to be single-storey, low-density housing. The plan also includes 58 Aboriginal cultural heritage sites and 14 per cent of land given over to community spaces.

Main street to bring sharper profits to small businesses By Ben Leahy Premier Colin Barnett and Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls have officially opened Karratha’s redeveloped main street in a move they hope will lead to a new decade of growth in the town.

Brendon Grylls and Finbar chairman John Chan at Pelago towers. Below, real estate agent Robin Vandenburg outlines the features in the newly constructed Pelago apartments.

With Royalties for Regions funding having helped bring more housing, health and sports facilities into Karratha since 2008, the new Sharpe Ave is designed to promote retail and small business growth. Mr Grylls said with the extended main street opening more lots up for development, he hoped to see commercial rental prices come down in the near future. “Doing the city core is really important in the overall plan of Karratha, City of the North,” he said. “There is a lot more commercial space coming into the CBD.” “I think we are 12 months away from a further softening in the [commercial rental] market.” Many see the lack of small businesses in Karratha as a major impediment to sustainable economic growth once the mining boom has passed. Unlike housing prices, Karratha’s commercial rental prices have not fallen and still rival those in Perth CBD at $750 per square metre, according to the Pilbara Development Commission.

Mr Grylls fronts the media after the opening of Sharpe Ave. However, Mr Grylls hopes the release of new commercial spaces in the multistorey Pelago West tower and the coming 10,000sqm of retail and office space in the under-construction $120 million The Quarter project drive prices down. He also hopes to see more high street shops built, especially lining the outside of Centro Shopping Centre. “By opening it out with shops on the outside, that is a complete revitalisation of the shopping centre. They have [successfully] done that in [South] Hedland,” he said. With the first stage of the $65 million Sharpe Ave works having taken one year to complete, Mr Grylls also apologised to existing small businesses but ruled out compensation for any disruption to their businesses. “I know that there was a lot of

disruption to the local community … [and] disruption to the local businesses,” he said. But he added that it was difficult to prove the effect that the street closures had on existing businesses. “The market has softened … [and] other businesses are reporting downturns, who haven’t been affected by [works] on the main street,” he said. Other new projects in planning for the CBD include a new hospital on Warambie Road and a civic centre, featuring a new theatre. Mr Grylls said there was also the possibility of further civic infrastructure, such as a new court, being constructed. “We need to keep the momentum and growth up that sees that whole main street redeveloped over the coming years,” he said.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls and Premier Colin Barnett officially opened Sharpe Ave last weekend. Below, the new main street.

First Aboriginal tour welcomed to country By Ben Leahy Ngarluma men Clinton Walker and Patrick Churnside last week took visiting dignitaries and media through the Murujuga National Park in one of the duo’s first tours of the site’s stunning rock art. Having launched the West Pilbara’s first Aboriginal tourism business in August, the men performed a welcome to country and led the group past rock art and bush tucker sites. Mr Walker also told a Ngarluma creation story of how the Murujuga peninsula’s rocky hills came to be formed by the bodies of dying flying foxes. With the dignitaries having spent their time inspecting the Pilbara’s industrial growth as part of the Sharpe Ave opening ceremonies, Mr Walker said he hoped to show them a different side to the region. “I wanted to start a tour company to showcase the Aboriginal culture of the region

and to show people there is more to the Pilbara area than just mining,” Mr Walker said. After decades of industrial development in the area, almost 44 per cent of the Burrup Peninsula was formally protected earlier this year when the area was declared Western Australia’s 100th national park. With an estimated one million rock art engravings in the broader Dampier Archipelago, Mr Walker was keen to see more Aboriginal tour companies start up to help spread awareness of the value and beauty of the region. He said Ngurrangga Tours specialises in taking groups on guided half-day tours to indigenous cultural sites and on fishing and hunting adventures. “A lot of people miss out on seeing the [attractions and] fishing and waterholes because they are here to work the whole time.” For more information an bookings with Ngurrangga Tours, call 0423 424 093.

Pilbara hip-hop teens speak at national health conference Three hip-hop siblings from Port Hedland spoke about the importance of investing in teenagers at the Adolescent Health Conference in Perth earlier this month. The Bule-Turner family members, including 15-year-old Pida, 14-year-old Tore and 12-year-old Mali, were invited to speak at the conference due to their work in Hedland’s The Hood Hip Hop Academy. They told the conference audience that more investment was needed to inspire and support children and teenagers in the community. They based their talk on their experiences in touring the East Pilbara to host hip-hop workshops where they found a number of health issues also affecting the Pilbara’s young people. Tore Bule-Turner, who was the youngest ever WA Youth Award recipient last year, said when young people were engaged, they began to take more responsibility for their own wellbeing. “Young people want be taken seriously on a range of issues, including health [and wellbeing],” he said. “We need to have communities across Australia – starting with Hedland – which

invest in young people’s potential to be better than our current crop of leaders.” Tore said anecdotal evidence from his tours with the hip-hop academy suggested that alcohol, bullying and violence are still prevalent in Pilbara communities where young people are growing up. But he said his hip-hop crews had already shown that, when supported, young people can change their own circumstances and begin to make positive life choices. Once they had given their talk, the three siblings then performed a hip-hop routine for the conference audience before fielding questions about their Pilbara experiences from leading Australian educators, sociologists, paediatricians and researchers. The trio then had the opportunity to meet Tony Simpson, the WA Minister for Youth. Tore was selected to talk at the conference with his sisters after his history as a volunteer with hip-hop and taekwondo groups helped him win his way through a competitive selection process.

“I’m a do-er. I always have been and always will be.” Despite her reluctance, Amanda began to embrace this new approach to life and, to her surprise, she found that it not only made her feel better, it helped her get ahead in business. She began by stopping herself from running endlessly from one thing to the next and instead began to program her mind to be still. To do this, she now meditates, does yoga and exercises before many of us have reached for the snooze button. By developing positive breathing techniques during these activities, she has also improved her ability to focus throughout the day. Late last year, Amanda also discovered the sport of mountain biking, something which has now become a great passion. Encouraged to “try just one race” to overcome a fear of keeping up with others during a race, Amanda immediately took to the sport. In her first season, she took out the 2013 Burrup Mountain Bike Club Ladies

Championship and recently joined 1200 competitors in Margaret River for the Cape to Cape race, where she came 28th out of 150 women. Last weekend, she racked up another milestone as her team won the women’s trio category in the Dusk ‘til Dawn 12-hour mountain bike race in Perth. Amanda also told her audience at the business lunch that she is now more involved in community groups. She is on the boards of the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KDCCI), the Small Business Centre West Pilbara and the Tambrey Primary School as well as the Burrup Mountain Bike Club committee. Despite spending more time on personal wellbeing and less in the office, Amanda has found that her business, North West Podiatry, is flourishing thanks to her positive mindset. It is growing fast, with 530 clients now registered – an increase of 140 per cent since she won the Best New Business title at the 2012 KDCCI Business Excellence Awards. She now also opens an extra day a week to cope with demand and spends time working with Mawarnkarra Health Service Aboriginal Corporation in Roebourne. Registered psychologist, radio host and holistic practitioner Christine McKee also spoke at the business lunch and backed up Amanda’s experience. She said people should take the time to pause rather than letting their minds slip into autopilot. She said the brain receives more than two million bits of data per second via our senses and that pausing allows us to notice what pre-conditioned habits, memories and values influence the decisions we make. One person who is determined to keep pausing in order to move ahead is Amanda. She makes sure that regular cups of tea with friends or time spent reading books by the pool are just as firm fixtures in her life as her business and housework.

More than 120 businesswomen came together at last week’s Pilbara Women’s Network lunch in Karratha to hear a presentation delivered by renowned psychologist and holistic practitioner Christine McKee. Ms McKee’s speech, You Are Not Your Brain, demonstrated the importance of understanding why people think and act how they do. “People in business, and even employees, need to get rid of any thoughts in their brain that hold them back from business,” Ms McKee said. “You are not your brain – it’s a construct.” Ms McKee is a registered psychologist and spent eight years practising in mining and resources.

But there is also a holistic side to her teachings. “Western psychology is less effective than when blending in the more eastern philosophical perspectives where we can become whole. Empowerment comes from within.” And she said eliminating selfdoubt could be the most important key to success. “If we are surrounding ourselves with people that may not be embracing our desire to get out there and be what we want, our limiting beliefs might kick in and sabotage [our work],” she said. “Build an absolute passionate, quality relationship with yourself and you will build a quality life in business.”

The end result is a reflection of the way Roy Hill and Brookfield Multiplex have worked collaboratively to deliver quality accommodation and infrastructure which will in turn attract quality workers across all areas.

Roy Hill mine village ready to welcome workers Brookfield Multiplex has completed the $200 million Roy Hill mine accommodation village in the Pilbara, paving the way for up to 2000 workers to move on site to manage the mine construction and operations. The company’s engineering and infrastructure division began work on the project in August last year, building almost 2000 permanent rooms, an auditorium, mess halls and a recreation centre featuring a gymnasium, sporting facilities, a pool, multipurpose room and barbecue areas. Brookfield Multiplex has also been awarded a $70 million contract to complete non-processing infrastructure (NPI) facilities at Roy Hill, including vehicle workshops and a wash-down facility, a boilermaker workshop, tyre-change facility, lube farm, administration buildings and gatehouse. Construction of the NPI facilities is due to start in January and should be finished by early 2015. Brookfield Multiplex WA regional managing director Chris Palandri said the Roy Hill mine accommodation village was the company’s first project in the North West,

and its successful completion had created a foothold for additional work in remote, resource-rich areas. “Brookfield Multiplex brings more than 50 years of experience to the table, along with a culture of outperforming – which has translated into the delivery of this project on time and to budget,” he said. “Our subcontracting model was key to our success – we employed specialists for each part of the project and we maintained a policy of transparency and communication with the client every step of the way to ensure we were meeting our targets and milestones. “Our demonstrated ability to deliver a project of this scope has already led to a second contract with Roy Hill to complete NPI facilities, and now we will be actively looking to win more tenders in the North West, using the mine accommodation village as a benchmark for what can be achieved.” Roy Hill project director Sanjiv Manchanda said the mine accommodation village was an ambitious project and that the finished product had exceeded expectations.

“We initially awarded the tender to Brookfield Multiplex because their proposal showed a solid understanding of our vision statement for the community,” he said. “Because the development is situated in such a remote location – 100km from the nearest town – there were a number of logistical challenges, so while it was important to have a detailed plan and process for delivery, Brookfield Multiplex’s ability to remain flexible and adaptable was paramount. “The end result is a reflection of the way Roy Hill and Brookfield Multiplex have worked collaboratively to deliver quality accommodation and infrastructure, which will in turn attract quality workers across all areas.” Over 50 years Brookfield Multiplex has completed more than 810 projects across the globe worth about $54 billion. The Brookfield Multiplex contracting business currently has a $9.4 billion global workbook across 50 projects spanning a variety of sectors including mining, rail, water, residential, tourism and leisure, health, retail, commercial and education.

The Health Department’s model has been developed to address the high prevalence

of ear disease among Aboriginal children. “We are working in collaboration with all key stakeholders to develop a Pilbara Ear Health Model of Care for the region,” said Peta Monley, chief executive officer of Telethon Speech & Hearing. With the release of the WA Department of

Health’s Otitis Media Model of Care, the opportunity arose for Telethon Speech & Hearing to assist with the implementation of this plan throughout the Pilbara. “We welcome input from all primary health care and education providers,” said Ms Monley. “Our evaluation, which included stakeholder engag-

ement, suggested our future efforts should focus on prevention through ear health education and the provision of audiology services. “It is very important to Telethon Speech & Hearing that our ear health programs leave a lasting legacy within the communities in which they are delivered.”

A street party between the Pelago towers on Sharpe Ave featured children’s rides and entertainment including a bouncy castle, slide, tea cup ride, face painters, stilt walkers and fire twirlers. Premier Colin Barnett and Minister for Regional Development and Lands Brendon Grylls hosted the formal announcement, which included ceremoniously smashing a wall down to reveal the new streetscape. Stage 2 of the Karratha City Centre infrastructure works is expected to begin early next year. A total of $2 billion worth of development projects have been either completed or are underway in the town. • Photos by Tamara Binamat

Rockin’ around the Christmas tree

By Tamara Binamat Rock stars, cowboys, wise men and even donkeys celebrated 2013 at St Paul’s Primary School when students and the school community came together for their annual Christmas concert. The children performed dance and song routines with themes such as Christmas and the nativity. The show took place at St Luke’s College last Tuesday and each class put on a performance, but it was the big kids who surprised everyone, with the teachers presenting their own impressive songand-dance routine to wrap up the concert. • Photos by Tamara Binamat

Joeys celebrate the gift of giving By Tamara Binamat The Third Karratha Scout Group celebrated the true meaning of Christmas by helping their six and seven-year-old children give gifts to those less fortunate. On Wednesday, December 5 the “Joeys” chipped in $5 each to buy presents for needy children and placed them under the Kmart Wishing Tree, which provides presents for less fortunate children.

Snap Pilbara will be closing for annual maintenance and a well deserved break from

Friday 20th December until Monday 13th January 2014 Email and online orders can still be accepted, however please allow additioinal time due to staff annual leave.

The children budgeted and decided on the gifts themselves, with guidance from Joey Scout leader Leah Black. “It’s about teaching them [Christmas time is] not all about receiving, it’s also about giving,” Leah said. “And that’s out motto in the Scouts.” The children selected, bought, wrapped and placed the four presents themselves. • Photos by Tamara Binamat

Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.

• • • • • • •

Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates

The last week saw a cool water current coming up close to the Ningaloo Coast, which pushed an eddy of warm water out wide to 50 nautical miles. This could be partly to blame for the lack of activity from pelagic fish around the cape. The deeper water has been quiet, though the rat-black marlin and sails have been mooching around the shallower waters of around 50-100m depth. Visiting angler from Melbourne Paul Besnard was out targeting the marlin and managed to get a yellowfin tuna during his stay. Paul is pictured this week with the tasty catch that was carved up for sashimi and tuna steaks and enjoyed by many. The shore-based fishing has been great off old Bundegi, especially for queenfish. November is usually the time for this and yet again that month has not disappointed. The rising tide is best, and a wade into the deeper water is required to reach the predators feeding on small baits. Most anglers love to target them on fly gear, though poppers, soft plastics and metals work pretty well too. We always recommend using barbless single hooks for these

fish because their gills come right up to their lower jaw. The single barbless hook is better for retrieval of hook and better for the fish. They are also very energetic fish that jump a lot, so when you are trying to remove the hook it can be dangerous. This is another reason for using the barbless single hook – after all, the last thing you want on a hot fishing session is a hook in you and the fish. The spear fishing competition was cancelled due to forecast bad weather and may be rescheduled depending on how much interest there is from spearos. If you are keen to enter this competition, please contact the Exmouth Game Fishing Club and register your interest so we can work out a date to suit everyone. Meanwhile, the next big event in the EGFC calendar is the Network Power heavy tackle tournament for big billfish. There has been a lot of interest in this event, particularly with the numbers of big fish encountered over the past few months. Let’s hope the weather and fishing will be great and we see lots of fish tagged. If you want to take part, entries are due in now, so get in quick.

Taekwondo students spin kick and salsa to success The Hedland Taekwondo Club hosted 8th Dan Grand Master Kim Seng last weekend as he oversaw the final grading of the club’s students in a highoctane series of martial arts sessions. Thirty-seven hopefuls began the weekend with a Saturday seminar in which they practised the basics in the morning before working on self-defence in the afternoon. The students literally threw each other around on the mats as they twisted and locked wrists and elbows. The second day involved a marathon session as Grandmaster Kim graded the students.

Red belts Mali Bule-Turner, Ethan Mahon, Jayden Morris and Mathew Batalin-Lovell carry Oscar Ferguson. Below, Matthew Hann applies an arm bar on Ryan Dyver.

Taekwondo gives children a kickstart for life ... Children acquire what I call the four Cs – courage, competence, confidence and community.

With his trademark humour, warmth and innovative training style, Grandmaster Kim soon had everyone feeling relaxed despite the pressure of grading. And, believe it or not, it was not unusual for students to bust out their salsa or breakdance moves during the sessions, with Grandmaster Kim using a range of disciplines to help his students improve their taekwondo technique. The club excelled on the day, with Grandmaster Kim awarding double promotions to students including Marnee and Hayley Robinson, Yusef and Teodulo Tuando and Michael Sclater because of their exceptional skill.

The Club Champion Award for 2013 was presented to Jayden Morris for exemplifying the spirit of taekwondo with his generosity, honesty, perseverance and kindness. Hedland Taekwondo Club head instructor Tim Turner said the day was a success. “This was the best grading yet. Taekwondo gives children a kick-start for life,” Mr Turner said. “Children acquire what I call the four Cs – courage, competence, confidence and community. “If they can leave our club with these four things, we have done our job and in a small way helped build a foundation for a successful future.”

Mr Turner also said the club’s mega raffle is set to be drawn on December 14, so anyone wanting to buy tickets needs to get in quick.

Up-and-coming swimming stars Georgie Krueger, Abigail Naulls and Emma Wooldridge.

By Christine Wooldridge The Karratha Swim Club has claimed 45 gold medals to finish second at the 2013 Pilbara Championships in Exmouth on November 23 and 24. The 47 members of the squad also picked up 53 silver and 24 bronze medals at the meet. That put Karratha behind hometown team Exmouth in the medal tally but ahead of teams from Parrabadoo, Tom Price, Pannawonica, Port Hedland and Carnarvon as well as a small group from Broome. Yet perhaps the best measure of the Karratha team’s success was the fact that every member

of the squad swam at least one personal best time (PB). Leading the way was 12-yearold Shaela Doherty, who sliced 31.18sec from her best 800m freestyle time to take a bronze. Mark Wooldridge, 13, also took 26.52sec off his best in the 200m individual medley to record a time of 3min7sec and collect gold, while Matthew Boyko, also 13, claimed silver in his 100m backstroke. Micah Rogers, 12, was another strong performer in the multi-discipline event, slashing 25.51sec from her 200m IM to do a 3min20sec PB. Maddie Keogh took 7sec off her 50m freestyle, and Jed

Norris, 8, claimed gold in his 100m breast stroke. In addition to great individual swims, Karratha’s relay teams also shone. Relay team members Johnson Murray, Grace Keogh, Isobel Norris and Zane Smith provided a highlight of the meet in the mixed 10 to 12 yearolds 200m medley by setting a new championship record. The entire Karratha team was just as good out of the pool, displaying great sportsmanship and contributing to the friendly atmosphere at the event. The club would also like to congratulate the Exmouth club for doing a great job running the event in a friendly but competitive atmosphere. Importantly, it helped build stronger relationships among members of the club and, for that reason alone, everyone deserves a big pat on the back. However, there is one important area that the club needs to improve on. Plenty of hard work will be needed to improve everyone’s Gangnam Style moves if Karratha hopes to beat Exmouth in the dance stakes at the next event.

Triathletes ride into new season By Stacey Holden Jason Geike has led home a field of more than 30 competitors to claim a win in the first Nickol Bay Triathlon Club race of the season on December 1. With perfect conditions greeting competitors, many members from past years lined up on the Dampier Palms start line alongside a large number of first-timers. There was also a good spread of entries into each of the different race distances, with 10 competitors tackling the long course, 11 racing over the short course, nine entering the enticer event and three kids also lining up. Jason Geike took the long course win in a time of 1hr 4min ahead of Nathan Hughes, while Nick Muller was first home in the short course in 48min, with Matthew Oronce coming in second. Tania Neeson led the women over the long course in 1hr 12min, while Sharee Stedman was the first home in the short course in 52min.

Holly Vernon was first in the enticer division in 27min with Nathaniel Green Sill the first junior home in 21min. All the courses include an ocean swim, bike ride and run along the picturesque Dampier Esplanade with the enticer distance designed for those new to triathlon and consisting of a 200m swim, 6km bike ride and 1.5km run. The short course involves a 400m swim, 12km ride and 2.8km run, while the long course is raced over a challenging 600m swim, 18km ride and 5.6km run. The kids’ category is open to Under 12s and consists of a 200m swim, 2.5km ride and 750m run. The second race of the season will take place next weekend, on December 15, at the Dampier Palms. Anyone is welcome to join the club, with the group keen to see people of all abilities come and have a go at triathlon. Club revved up about new mat By Dorothea Lloyd

The Karratha Gymnastics Club and its new committee wish to thank Liam Lennon and the members of the Karratha Bikers Association for donating “a wonderful and exciting piece of equipment”.

The Karratha Gymnastics Club has been able to spring into action with even more bounce than usual after the group was presented with a new Tumble Trak mat. The $5000 mat was donated by the Karratha Bikers Association. The bikers raised money for the mat at their annual Car and Bike Show in September. The Tumble Trak, with its increased padding and spring, puts less pressure on the body and its joints and helps improve gymnasts’ skills without causing injuries to ankles and knees. The spring in the mat also helps gymnasts launch further into the air as they practise their somersaults and tumble turns.

It is already being used continuously by the club’s gymnasts of all ages. And with more than 400 members, the club is also keen to gain more fundraising support from the community as it seeks to provide its future champions with the best equipment. Practising on quality equipment is especially important for those gymnasts learning new techniques, which are needed to compete in regional, state and nation competitions and – who knows – maybe even one day in the Olympics.
