Booming investment in the Pilbara’s mining sector has peaked and is not likely to reach similar levels until the late 2020s, visiting expert says.

The Pilbara’s women might be in need of rescuing this weekend as the Hotshots male revue show comes to town dressed as police and firemen.

Local Sudanese celebrate independence By Ben Leahy For most locals, July’s NAIDOC week is a time to celebrate the Pilbara’s Indigenous cultures with their links spanning back tens of thousands of years. But for Karratha’s South Sudanese community, July is also a time to reflect on much more recent events. That is because after decades of conflict, South Sudan finally gained its independence from northern Sudan on July 9, 2011, to become the world’s youngest nation. To mark the country’s Independence Day, Karratha’s South Sudanese community members gathered on the Dampier foreshore last Sunday to cook a food called mien and take part in traditional dancing and wrestling. “[Independence Day] is exciting for us because while we live in Australia, we also now know we have our own country back home,” Thomas Kok said. “It gives us the chance to remember those who died for the country and all the parents and cousins and relatives still living back in [South Sudan].”

By Tamara Binamat A film about two blokes on a roadtrip that took an unexpected turn is set to premiere in Karratha next weekend. Dave Peck and Mick Tuthill travelled 6,000km from Karratha through deserts and communities across Western Australia, including a remote community Dave grew up in more than 26 years ago. “I’m happy with the film,” Dave said. “It’s a classic Aussie film about two blokes, who set off on a reckless adventure but [end up taking] a meaningful journey.” The film was locally-made and funds raised from its debut screening in Karratha will go to the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Dave and Mick are urging local residents to get behind the film by attending the screening at Moonrise Cinema, Karratha, next Saturday July 20 at 7pm. An entry donation of $5 applies, and a barbecue and drinks will be available.

Rate rises and airport terminal redevelopment headline Shire budget By Ben Leahy

popular facilities, like the Moonrise Cinema as well as most planning and building fees.

Increased revenue from rate rises for mining companies and residential properties will help improve the delivery of services and local infrastructure during the 2013-2014 financial year, the Shire of Roebourne said.

Fees have been increased in some areas, such as swimming pool inspection and cemetery fees to reflect the actual cost of the Shire providing the service.

General rates on residential properties have risen by five and a half per cent with the major increase in rates revenue coming from changes to rates for mining companies.

Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said that rates and fees had to increase to allow the Shire to keep pace with the needs of a growing region.

A number of fees and charges have remained steady including

“Rate increases are always a tough decision for the Council

and in light of that we have decided to reduce the rise in residential general rates that we advertised by half a per cent, Mr Adams said. “I will be making sure that we get the best value we possibly can for all of our rates and fees, delivering high level services and focusing on the things that the community has told us they want, he said. This year the Shire is budgeting to receive over $36 million in rates income, more than $47.5 million in fees and charges and over $10 million in grants and subsidies.

• A 26-year old woman crashed a Ford Falcon

Plans for all three projects are well underway with detailed designs set to be unveiled towards the end of this year. Shire of Roebourne President Fiona White-Hartig said the Shire wished to provide a level of infrastructure that is among the best in regional cities in Australia.

Hoons cop charges, cars impounded Karratha Police charged two Karratha residents with reckless driving and other offences after two unrelated car accidents on Sunday afternoon. About 12:40pm Sunday July 7, a 29-year-old man was seen “doing burnouts at the Karratha Tavern when he crashed his HSV Grange into a parked bus. The driver had fled the scene when police arrived, but a different person had been sent to collect the vehicle, which police said had significant damage. Police advised the person collecting the car that it was being impounded under hoon legislation. The driver of the HSV Grange later presented himself to Karratha Police Station and was charged with reckless driving.

These include the Karratha Airport terminal redevelopment, 7 Mile Waste Transfer Facility and the Dampier Community Hub.

Leisureplex opens doors for Karratha small businesses By Ben Leahy

businesses,” Adams said.

When Karratha’s Leisureplex opened earlier this month, many politicians and Shire of Roebourne staff saw it as more than just a sporting complex. They hoped its heated swimming pools and international-standard basketball courts would also act as a $63m billboard to attract more families to move permanently to the town. Yet behind the glitz of its facilities, the Leisureplex opening also revealed a subtle sign that services and quality of life are improving in Karratha.

This was visible in the way the Shire turned to local businesses to help it stage the Leisureplex’s opening cocktail party and Pete Murray concert rather than use a Perth-based events company. These businesses included caterers Soul Café, event managers Wrapped Creations, sound production crew Signature Music and photographer Margaret Bertling among others. Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said not only did the businesses do a great job, but they were a sign the local economy is growing. “A sign of a maturing regional economy is a growing service sector and more small

“And although we still have a long way to go, these businesses are definitely a sign that growth and diversification is occurring.” Karratha’s event management team Wrapped Creations represents an especially noticeable growth in local know-how and skills. In the past, large companies and festivals in the Pilbara had often flown up Perth-based teams to oversee their events, but David Yakas from Wrapped Creations said that is changing. “Business for us is quite strong at the moment, we’ve noticed in the last three months a massive increase and we are looking busy through to the end of 2013,” he said. “We are finding that the word is getting out that small businesses can deliver in this town, that we are reliable, we have good products, good service and they are starting to trust us.” And with Karratha’s service sector still being a nascent market, there are plenty of gaps local businesses can fill. Yakas said an example was that previously most customers were interested in only having someone co-ordinate an event and paid no attention to the look and feel of its styling. However, with Yakas having a passion for styling events,

nearly all of his clients now also book this value-added service. “And some clients, once they’ve learnt to trust me, now even let me go a bit more crazy and out there with my ideas,” he said. Despite the opportunities, however, Wrapped Creations faces problems that are familiar to most small businesses in the Pilbara. For a start, he sources most of his decorations and flowers from Perth and elsewhere. “We have to have a good relationship with our courier,” Yakas said. He’s also chosen to rent a warehouse to store all his props and decorations but as yet hasn’t been able to afford an office for their three staff members. For emerging catering business Soul Café, which catered to its first group of more than 50 people at the Leisureplex cocktail party, affordable space is also an issue. Currently operating out of their popular café in the Pelago building, they hope to find a large commercial kitchen to keep up with demand for future events. “We have also seen quite an increase in the demand for high quality catering for large and private functions,” Soul Café’s Beth Corps said.

“RELAX BY THE POOL”

As a small business in Karratha, you can get rather unexpected customers. This happened to Alex McGregor at Karratha’s Tint A Car recently when tugboat captain Sean Regan from marine towage company Riverwijs sought his assistance. While Hollywood movies would have most of us associate tinted windows with gangster and presidential limos, captain Regan was keen to add a solar film to the windows of two 32.5m tugboats to reduce solar exposure and glare. The two vessels, the Riverwijs Emma and Riverwijs Rowan, operate in the Mermaid Sound as they daily assist liquefied natural gas bulk carriers and, occasionally, iron ore carriers to the Woodside LNG and Rio Tinto berths. “[The] Riverwijs Emma and Rowan help bring millions of dollars-worth of cargo to shore every day,” Regan said. “Maintaining comfortable conditions inside the wheelhouse to

enable me to focus entirely on the job at hand is crucial.” “Each vessel has six windows … so the glare in the cabin was relentless.” With McGregor’s assistance, it was decided to fit a 17 per cent visible light transmission film on the tugs, which successfully reduced the heat and glare in the wheelhouse. “We had to take into account the severe salt air environment, so we went with a high quality, durable film with a stable adhesive,” McGregor said. However, McGregor will have to work on his sea legs before he attempts a similar job in the future. “Next time I’ll make sure the water is calm before I start work on the water,” he said.

A man had to be forcibly removed from an aircraft in Port Hedland and is now being dealt with by Federal Police after refusing to leave the plane.

The captain then asked the man to leave the aircraft, but he still refused, which is when police had to intervene.

Port Hedland Police said they received the call for help on Saturday July 6 when a man refused to leave the Qantas aircraft after being told he was too intoxicated to fly. Police said the 31-year-old man was late to board the evening flight and rushed through security. • The man had to be focibly removed off the Qantas flight at Port Hedland Airport

The man continued to cause a scene through the terminal and was eventually charged with two counts of obstructing police for an incident at the front of the airport. Local police said the incident on the aircraft is being dealt with by Federal Police under the aviation act, and it is likely the man will receive an infringement and a possible 12-month ban from Qantas.

“I’m philosophical we’ve had some really good years, and, while we are sad to be closing down, it is a business decision,” Cukela said.

“They are the two books that we have always had on the shelf and they always tick over [with sales],” Cukela said.

And owner Karen Cukela said it was not only Internet sales and eBooks that were to blame.

Pilbara mining boom to cool off until 2020s, professor says By Ben Leahy

focuses on cutting operating costs.

Booming investment in Australia’s mining sector has peaked and is not likely to reach similar levels again until the late 2020s, according to a Perth business school professor.

Hartley said that unless Australia returned to a period of stable, predictable and internationally competitive government policy, more investment dollars would be lost to Canada and the US.

Professor Hartley from the University of Western Australia said it is not just worries about a Chinese slowdown but a lack of confidence in the Federal Government that has spooked investors. Much of the blame lies with the Government’s controversial mining super tax and its policy meddling in areas, such as 457 visas, Hartley, who holds the UWA’s BHP Billiton Chair in the Business of Resources, said. “The huge mining investment period seems to have peaked in Australia right now,” Hartley said during a recent visit to the Pilbara. “We’ve seen it in iron ore, of course, but also it is peaking in the energy sector as well.” The slowdown in investments is already showing signs of impacting the Pilbara economy. Last year, BHP Billiton postponed its multibillion-dollar Port Hedland port expansion and there have recently been concerns about job losses in the town as it

come online in “big lumps” they create periods of short supply and oversupply that drive prices up and down.

He said the thing to remember is that the Pilbara’s resources industry is not only looking for customers to sell its iron ore and oil and gas to – it also needs investors to fund the projects.

makes it especially important to make money during the good times.

This is where Australia has typically held an advantage.

“It is the money that you can make in the boom cycle that really pays for the investment,” Hartley said.

The country’s reputation for predictable government has given investors the confidence to invest in mining and oil and gas projects that stretch over decades. “What makes Australia competitive with a lot of these developing countries where wages and costs are much lower is that you can’t trust those governments,” Hartley said. Yet, in Australia, Labor Party policies had eroded that advantage in confidence with the mining tax being particularly damaging, Hartley said. He said the mining industry is by its nature subject to boom and busts. This is because it is sensitive to global demand and because as large projects

“If the politicians come in and take away all the profits • Professor Peter Hartley from the University of Western Australia in the boom time then the next time “This kind of unstable changes in policy around the investors will not invest in your and the big run-up in costs here, really country.” mean that Australia is probably going to Hartley is even more critical of the fact that the mining tax ended up raising very little revenue. “In a way that is even worse because Australia has suffered the loss in reputation but for what purpose,” he said.

miss the next cycle of investment.” “So we see North America getting a lot of investment, and probably not until the second half of the 2020s do we really see another big boom in investment in Australia.”

Karratha South Sudanese independence joy By Ben Leahy Sitting on Dampier’s quiet foreshore, it is hard to imagine the journey that most of Karratha’s 29 South Sudanese community members took to reach Australia. Since 1955, the two civil wars between Sudan’s Arab and Muslim north and the mostly Christian and Animist south cost the lives of 1.5m people and displaced millions more. Karratha’s Thomas Kok said many South Sudanese fled the country as those from the north tried to impose sharia law and killed local independence leaders. Thomas also lost his own father and mother, who died when he was just a boy. He later spent nine-years in a Kenyan refugee camp before gaining permission to move to Australia with his uncle in 2006 at the age of 21. Arriving in Melbourne, Thomas couldn’t speak English and had only limited schooling from his time in the refugee camp in Kenya. Earlier, as a boy, there had been no schools in his home village called Wyai. Thomas instead herded goats, always keeping a spear close to hand to ward off hyenas and even leopards. Back in Australia, the challenges of finding a job with limited qualifications and English as a second language might be more mundane but equally difficult in their way. Yet Thomas has adapted well, he is now manager at Karratha recycling

company Toxfree and, like many local South Sudanese, works to support his wife and baby in Perth and relatives still living in Africa.

THE GREAT GATSBY

“All of us here have got family back home in Sudan,” South Sudanese elder Nhial Lual said.

(M, Drama, Run Time 142mins)

“So year after year, we go back and see them but we always come back to Australia.” With South Sudan containing vast oil wealth but still facing many problems ranging from corruption and poor infrastructure to high infant mortality rates, Nhial is keen for today’s youth to help out back home.

“We would like to thank the Australia government and people very much, here we have gained knowledge and we need to transfer that knowledge back to Sudan [to help rebuild the country].” In the meantime, the community will continue celebrating Independence Day through such traditions as the country’s own wrestling style in which athletes rub chalk or cow dung on their bodies and compete using similar rules as Japan’s Sumo wrestling.

The Great Gatsby follows Fitzgeraldlike, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. Friday 19 July and Sunday 28 July at 7pm

DESPICABLE ME 2 (PG, Animated, Family, Run Time 98mins)

Traditionally, the champion wrestler from one Sudanese village would challenge the winner from the next village with the winner then progressing on until eventually one athlete is crowned champion of the whole country. “Our children will learn Australian way but we should also try and maintain the [Sudanese] culture and not forget it,” Thomas said.

Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends. Screaming with laughter and fun, Monsters University is directed by Dan Scanlon (‘Cars’) and produced by Kori Rae (‘Up’, ‘The Incredibles’, ‘Monsters, Inc.’).

Students dance to celebrate TI culture

• Tyson Mowarin at a NAIDOC Week cook up in Roebourne. - Photos by Tamara Binamat

Elders honoured at camp cook up By Tamara Binamat As the whole Pilbara celebrates NAIDOC week, local Indigenous people are making sure their elders are specially honoured. On Wednesday July 10, Roebourne resident Tyson Mowarin organised a cook up at a bush reserve located near Roebourne. Tyson said the purpose of

the NAIDOC Week lunch was to make up for the old people missing out on the Roebourne opening ceremony as they were out of town. Everyone in the community was invited to enjoy some kangaroo tail and damper made fresh at the reserve. Roebourne residents Kaayman and Primus were in charge of cooking the popular “roo” tails, and said the key

to a good result is a good fire, good heat and a good tail. After the fire is hot enough the hair on the tail is singed off before the tail is wrapped in alfoil and buried under the coals, slow cooking for about an hour. Then, you can “enjoy a big feed and lick your fingers afterwards”, Kaayman and Primus agreed.

KSHS principal Greg Kelly said a sense of community was an important skill he hopes to instil in all students. “The great thing about Sarah’s activity is she took it on all herself,” he said. “For us as a school it reinforces those values we’re teaching our students - the importance of giving back. “What Sarah has done is a perfect example of that. “It’s about being proactive in helping out the community. “For her to step up and do that is fantastic.”

The low tide

By Karen Davies

Karen Davies is a recent arrival in Karratha and, after a trip to the boat ramp where she saw a group of young people scouring for mud pippies, she was inspired to pen the following poem.

I could never have imagined this if I hadn’t seen it for myself, The low-tide across the ocean leaving a waterless, muddy shelf, The boat ramp left floating above the bare ocean floor, The mud crabs scampering to find some water near the shore.

Wildlife watch: Black Kite

The Black Kite (Milvus migrans) is a mediumsized bird of prey. It is thought to be the world’s most abundant species of acciptrid. Unlike others of the group, Black Kites are opportunistic hunters and are more likely to scavenge. They spend a lot of time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food. Their angled wing and distinctive forked tail make them easy to identify. Black Kites can be distinguished from Red Kites by the slightly smaller size, less forked tail (visible in flight), and generally dark plumage without any rufous. The sexes are alike. The upper plumage is brown but the head and neck tend to be paler. The patch behind the eye appears darker. The outer flight feathers are black and the feathers have dark cross bars and are mottled at the base. The lower parts of the body are pale brown, becoming lighter towards the chin. The body feathers have dark shafts giving it a streaked appearance. The cere and gape are yellow, but the bill is black. The legs are yellow and the claws are black. They have a distinctive shrill whistle followed by a rapid whinnying call. The temperate populations of this kite tend to be migratory while the tropical ones are resident. Black Kites are most often seen gliding and soaring on thermals as they search for food. The flight is buoyant and the bird glides with ease, changing directions easily. They will swoop down with their legs lowered to snatch small live prey, fish,

household refuse and carrion. They are opportunist hunters and have been known to take birds, bats and rodents. They are attracted to smoke and fires, where they seek escaping prey. This behaviour has led to Australian native beliefs that kites spread fires by picking up burning twigs and dropping them on dry grass. In winter, kites form large communal roosts. Flocks may fly about before settling at the roost. After pairing, the male frequently copulates with the female. Unguarded females may be approached by other males, and extra pair copulations are frequent. Males returning from a foraging trip will frequently copulate on return, as this increases the chances of his sperm fertilizing the eggs rather than a different male. Both the male and female take part in nest building, incubation and care of chicks. The typical clutch size is two or sometimes three eggs. The incubation period varies from 30–34 days.

Oh, the vision of watching pippies being fished for in the mud, Barefoot youth having more courage than I could; I watched from a safe distance as the tide began to change, With the picturesque horizon rapidly being rearranged. The waters began to rush – I could feel the end of the dry, The bird-life began to leave, to take refuge up high, The mud-flats came to life as crabs and fish appeared, Anticipation as the much-welcomed waters neared. In just over an hour, the mighty waters flowed, The barefoot youth raced in carrying their load, The sky began to cloud, as mother nature spoke, An amazing tidal-turn watched by intrigued townsfolk.

“We’re excited to bring LJ Hooker Pilbara to Newman, offering customers the benefit of a strong brand, customer focus and innovative support systems,’’ said Mr Hipworth.

Financial Markets By Brenton Reynolds

After an initially poor start to the week the ASX200 closed stronger on Friday July 5, finishing at 4,841 points, up 0.81 per cent for the week. The rally was largely led by positive manufacturing and construction data coming out of the US as well as global markets performing strongly. In news that’s sure to affect most readers, oil prices have hit their highest level since May 2012, on the back of turmoil in Egypt and decreasing US stocks. The rising price of crude combined with a falling Australian dollar means we could see prices at the bowser reach as high as $1.70 for regular unleaded in the coming months.

Stock Tip of the Week Sheffield Resources Ltd (SFX) – SPECULATIVE BUY Sheffield Resources Ltd’s main project is the development of the very large Thunderbird mineral sands deposit in northern WA. The high grade, good recoveries and premium products indicated by initial test work suggest the economics of Thunderbird are strong and the project can be developed. What’s of more interest at the moment is SFX’s current diamond drilling campaigning targeting nickel and copper at the company’s Redbull project in the Fraser Range WA. The Fraser Range is host to Sirius’s Nova discovery, and so we wait in anticipation for the results of Sheffield’s current drill program due in the next couple of weeks. We view SFX as a speculative buy with a valuation of $1.70 and a 12-month price target of $1.84. SFX closed Tuesday July 9 at 30 cents per share.

After the latest near miss incident with people illegally and dangerously climbing over a stationery loaded ore train and racing trains at level crossings, Rio Tinto is again reminding the community to stay clear of train tracks, take care at level crossings and be aware of the hazards on the rail access road. Rio Tinto Rail Operations general manager Zara Fisher said this time of the year traditionally sees more activity and risky behaviours around the rail network as people travel to favourite camping spots and use the rail access road to travel to inland communities, but recent behaviours have raised concern. “At the end of the day we don’t want anyone to be hurt, and this behaviour is putting not just the person who instigates it at high risk of being seriously hurt but also their friends,

family and our employees,” said Ms Fisher. “This is why we continue to actively promote and remind everyone of safe behaviours around our rail network.” Rio Tinto is in the process of expanding the Pilbara operations, which means there will be a significant increase in trains using the already busy rail network. “If you think about the fact that our trains are 2.5km long, can start anytime and have a significant stopping distance, and compare that to risks we do understand such as large trucks, it becomes apparent why people should not be anywhere near our trains or rail lines,” said Ms Fisher. “If we see dangerous and risky behaviours members of the public can expect to be approached by our staff who will

explain the danger associated with being close to and on the rail tracks, and we ask that people respect and understand why we are doing this.” General rail safety tips include: • Always slow down when approaching rail crossings and ensure it is safe to cross – never try and race the train; and • Never go near or on the rail way track or a stationery train and ore cars (wagons) as the trains could move at any time and are coordinated remotely. Rio Tinto is participating in the upcoming National Rail Safety Week in August and will be promoting the message of “Look, Listen, Live” through a variety of avenues aimed at school children, young adults, and road users.

As the New Year rolls in, there has been lots of tinkering with Super by the Federal Government, especially SelfManaged Super. So what are the significant things you need to consider this year as you are collating all your documents for your year-end reporting? Pensions Close is apparently.

good

enough,

There has been a lot of talk about pensions over the last few years especially after the release of the controversial first draft of the ATO’s Pension Ruling. The ATO’s ruling, to put it simply, said that if you failed to take at least your minimum pension out of the fund then the fund lost its income tax exemption. This was obviously a significant impost on the humble SMSF that failed to make its minimum pension by as little as one dollar.

There were ways around this by commuting part of the pension but for those that simply missed out by a little amount the administration costs to do this were significant. After backlash from the industry and the public the ATO has softened its stance on the matter conceding that as long as most of the pension amount has been drawn by 30 June in the relevant year (read that as 11/12ths of your minimum) the SMSF can still have the income tax exemption provided any pension shortfall is taken out as soon as possible. So if you have just fallen short of taking the minimum pension out of the fund by 30 June don’t panic. Check with your advisor first but you should be able to catch up so to speak and maintain the income tax exemption.

If you have missed the minimum pension altogether or by a whole lot then you may well have undone all your planning and might be up for some tax. Market valuations

For the first time in SMSF history, 2013 will require the annual financial statements of the SMSF to be reported at market value. Previously there were only three times the SMSF trustee was required to value the assets of the SMSF at market value. These were - when a member started a pension, when a member passed away or where there were in-house assets. Interestingly though none of these three required the financial statements to be reported at market value; they were simply used for calculation purposes. For the 2013 financial statements and onwards the SMSF’s financial statements are required to have all the assets at market value. For most SMSF’s this will not be a significant impost as cash, shares and residential property are well accommodated for valuations in the market. The difficulty will arise for commercial properties and unlisted entities such as closely held trusts within SMSF’s as there is no simple web based valuation tool available.

have the funds administration looked after by an accountant or tax agent there shouldn’t be a need to ask the question but it might pay to check so your administration isn’t held up. FOFA

The Future of Financial Advice reforms started on 1 July 2013. This means that there might now be a cost for most things that were provided as part of the service before 30 June. The FOFA reforms are very complex and have wide ranging implications for both Financial Planners as well as Accountants. From an accountant’s perspective, which is mine, FOFA means that eventually I will have to document all conversations with clients and generally provide a Statement of Advice around any actions that are chosen. What does this mean for you?

There may be some cost associated with having the assets of the SMSF valued this year so it is something to be aware of.

Simply, it will be another cost that will have to be considered when implementing strategies within the SMSF. Time is money and if your advisor has to provide a Statement of Advice regarding a withdrawal and recontribution plan for a person who is over 60 and not eligible for Centrelink when they didn’t have to previously then there are going to be extra costs associated with managing an SMSF.

SMSF Auditors

New contribution caps

As of 1 July 2013 all SMSF audits must be completed by a Registered SMSF Auditor. That means those SMSF trustees who complete their own compliance activities, such as income tax returns, will need to ask the Auditor for their SMSF Auditor Registration Number.

For those turning 60 this year, remember you have a $35,000 contribution limit rather than a $25,000 one.

The full-time travelling musician takes away audiences with his entertaining set and vocal ability. Originally from Melbourne, Stu toured the West Coast in 2011 and never left! “It’s the blue sky days and all the ocean,” Stu explained. This tour is in support of his latest album, Elements, which was recorded at the renowned LAFX recording studio in North Hollywood. “That was like a dream come true, from where I was beginning and the endless gigs I’ve done, to go and record in another country is pretty special,” Stu said. Stu performs a mix of cover songs and original tunes off his six CDs, and audiences can expect to hear special versions of songs from artists such as The Beatles and Crowded House.

interview

Rudely Interrupted By Tamara Binamat This remarkable group of “unlikely rock stars” is sure to amaze Hedland audiences when they perform at this year’s Spinifex Spree in Port Hedland. Rudely Interrupted are the real deal, and have been praised worldwide for their musical talent and entertaining performances, but many wouldn’t know until the boys step on stage that the group all have some form of disability. Rohan Brooks was born with red hair, Rory Burnside was born without eyes and lives with autism, Josh Hogan lives with physical and intellectual differences and Sam Beke lives with Down Syndrome, Rohan revealed. At the Spinifex Spree Festival the band will be made up of Rory on vocals and keyboard, Josh on drums, Rohan on guitars, Nick Murphy on bass and Sam on the MIDI station and drink-stealing duties. “We’re really looking forward to it,” Rohan said. “It’s a great festival to be invited to play, with such great

talent in the past.” Rohan was a professional musician and working with disability music therapy programs when he stumbled across a lifechanging opportunity. The Rudely Interrupted program started in 2006. Rohan applied for a musicmaking grant shortly before meeting Rory, and a few weeks later he met Josh. He witnessed Josh play a drum kit for the first time and immediately saw the natural talent and potential for an extraordinary drum player. “When he coordinated that rock beat, and I knew Rory could sing, I just thought then we could do something special,” Rohan said. Rohan and Rory write the songs, which he describes as indie rock and pop. “Due to [Rory’s] unique perspective of the world, he was born without eyes and lives with autism, some of the subjects can be a little bit different, but at the end of the day they’re catchy rock songs that we like to play,” Rohan said. “We just write what we feel.” Rory and Rohan wrote a song called Don’t Break My

Heart, after Rory asked, “Do you think you could die from a broke heart?”. “We had a moment when we were writing this song when I went, this is too special, the world needs to know about the talent of these kids,” Rohan said. “We worked really, really hard for six or seven years and they’re really competent, professional musicians. “When we start playing you see changes in people’s faces, because [the band] don’t look like they can do it.” Rohan said the opportunity to perform and be judged by peers on a professional level is what most excites the band members. “Living in the world we live in, they are discriminated against unfortunately,” Rohan said. “And they know they’re different, they’ve been told that all their lives. “But when they get up there and they play and it’s a strong musical act and they can show people what their talents are, they love it. “And that’s the most important thing to us. “We’re not in it for ego, it’s about the music and the opportunity.”

event By Tamara Binamat If you hear gradual screaming from women up the Pilbara coast this week, don’t worry, a fireman, soldier and policeman will be attending the scene to help. The Sydney Hotshots, a male revue show, are on their way to our region for a North West tour, sure to raise the temperature of women, and maybe a few men, during their sexy ‘Funtasia’ strip show. The Funtasia tour promises routines with themes such as Grease Lightning and the “always popular” fireman show. Andrew Hammang, one of the performers, plays the part of military officer, a very confidential role. “I love getting out there [to the North West] and seeing the crowd’s face when you’re doing a good job,” Andrew said.

North West s e r u t a r e p m e T set to soar

“They really know how to get into the show and have a good time. “When we pick girls out of the crowd and bring them up on stage,

that always gets a good reaction.” Andrew has been performing with the Hotshots for about four years, but in a previous life, he worked with a car racing tem. In the time he has been performing, he said there is always one woman in every crowd who believes he can’t take his own clothes off. “There’s ones that think they’re there to scratch you and tear your clothes off,” Andrew said. “[But] all the guys are really looking forward to seeing the North West ladies. “They seem to really get into it as a group, it makes our job easier and we enjoy the show more. “We always love going over [there].” The Sydney Hotshots will be dancing all over the Pilbara, and the shows always attract a huge crowd. After all, it’s not every night a lady gets romanced by a secret agent, arrested by a police officer, and carried away by a cowboy, all before midnight.

What causes food intolerance and allergies? The biggest contributor to our gluten intake is wheat, considering we have completely altered the wheats structure to make it more productive and easier to manage through genetic modification, is it any wonder we cant digest it anymore? Gluten is the intolerence that is seen to be on the greatest increase in our modern society. Why not try some gluten free goods and rice base products? Dairy on the other hand is pretty self explanatory, drinking milk after we have been wheaned from our mothers? You wouldnt go and drink milk from a breastfeeding mother, but we drink it from a cow? Do we really think we are getting absorbable calcium from homoginised and pasturised milk? Try molasses, broccoli, almonds, leafy vegetables, salmon with bones, sesame seed paste, tofu and soybeans for a healthy low reactive change. Do a test on your body and eat a food that you think you may be intolerant to for three days for three meals. See what your body does. If you have an adverse reaction don’t eat it for three months and slowly reintroduce it after that time. There are many tests you can get done to get a more definitive result if you require. If you have any further enquiries you are most welcome to come to the clinic and see what needs to be done for the good of your long-term health. Have an awesome day!

Intolerances and allergies are caused when we consume foods that shift the balance of the immune system. This creates inflammation and a sine heightened immune response - sort of like attacking ourselves from the inside. gram Some immune responses to allergies can be life-threatening, such as Anaphylaxis, which is when we have to carry an epipen, a self administered needle that is used when people start an anaphylactic shock response. But less evident intolerance conditions are more insidious and the reaction can take up to two days to become evident. Intolerance is hard to diagnose due to this time frame and can cause mild to severe health problems in up to 45 per cent of the population. There are many health conditions that can be caused or exacerbated by adverse food reactions. These include migraines, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, depression, weight gain, the skin conditions psoriasis and eczema, fatigue, insomnia, pre menstrual syndrome, constipation, mood swings, anxiety, sinusitis and colds and flu. In children, attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, lethargy, acne, bowel disturbances, skin disorders and mood disorders can be symptoms of allergies and intolerances. It is important to take note of the symptoms of food disorders as the continual internal battle of the immune system decreases your ability to fight off disease and leaves the body in an eternal state of inflammation. Chronic lowered immune response increases the ability to get autoimmune diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, hypothyroidism, scleroderma, more allergies, chrons disease, coeliacs disease and other disease states. Also, if the body is continually inflamed we must remember the base of all disease is inflammation. The most intolerant foods we eat are gluten and dairy. The next on the list are seafood, soy, corn, oats and rye.

Lara Margaret Maddison 22 June 2013 Andrea and Mark Maddison, along with big sister Chloe and big brother Jake, are proud to announce the arrival of their baby girl, Lara Margaret Maddison. Born on Saturday 22nd June 2013 at 7:32am at Nickol Bay Hospital weighing 6 lb 11 oz (3050 grams) and measuring 47cms. A special thank you to Dr Hudda and midwives Rochelle and Alison. A big thank you again to Margaret (Granny) for travelling from Adelaide to help out during this time.

New service for elderly in Pilbara The East Pilbara Independence Support group has taken over the delivery of Home and Community Care services in Tom Price with the intention of reaching out to more Indigenous members of the community. EPIS is based in Newman and was established in 1993 for the purpose of providing services to elderly people, and people with a disability and their carers. EPIS currently delivers HACC programs in Newman, Marble Bar, Nullagine and Jigalong. Southern Cross Care is one of Western Australia’s largest care providers and it assumed responsibility for services in Tom Price when it took over operations of the Pilbara and Kimberley Care group in 2010. The geographical isolation of Tom Price coupled with the high operating costs has presented challenges to SCC during this period and the group said it was bringing in changes to ensure operations in the region are sustainable. SCC chief manager of Community Services, Graydn Spinks, said EPIS had the experience necessary to take over home care services in Tom Price. “We have every confidence in the … ability of EPIS to provide more immediate and localised support to meet the care needs of vulnerable people in very remote locations such as Tom Price,” Spinks said. EPIS CEO Cath O’Connor said the group was excited to be taking over the Tom Price services. “We will operate the same quality HACC services SCC have been providing, with a view to encouraging more Indigenous community members to access the services we will be providing,” O’Connor said.

West Australian logistics company Centurion has signed a major contract with Rio Tinto to deliver transport and logistics services for the mining giant’s iron ore and salt operations for up to ten years. Centurion executive general manager, Mark Doig, said the contract would help the business respond to the changing environment in mining. “The resources industry is entering a production-focused phase and to be successful we need to be continually improving,” Doig said. Rio Tinto’s managing director for Pilbara Mines Michael Gollschewski applauded the new deal, which was celebrated at a signing ceremony at Centurion’s Perth headquarters this week. “Reliable freight supply across our Western Australian operations at a more efficient and competitive level than ever before is very important to our business,”

Gollschewski said. “Also the fact that we found the best partner to be a home-grown local success story is very satisfying.” The Rio Tinto contract follows the recent signing of a five-year contract with Woodside to deliver the State’s largest oil and gas provider’s logistics needs in Perth, Dampier, Broome and Darwin. “Our operations are growing to accommodate the ongoing relationships and work is underway to expand our Hazelmere facility to incorporate a new 30,000m2 warehouse, creating a 150,000m2 logistics hub,” Doig said. He said Centurion had also commenced construction of a 103,000m2 supply base facility in Gap Ridge near Dampier to further complement its Karratha operations and regional network of branches throughout the State.

How chemicals are used in fraccing By Bill Tinapple the petroleum executive director with the Department of Mines and Petroleum From the food we eat to the products we use to clean our homes – chemicals play an important part in our everyday lives. But given that they can also be harmful if used in the wrong concentrations or applications, there are a number of strict laws regulating their use. These laws apply to all chemicals used in oil and gas activities, including those in hydraulic fracture stimulation, commonly known as fraccing. While fraccing is not currently being carried out in the Pilbara, the department recognises that some community members express concern about the practice. A common question I am asked is: ‘What chemicals are used during fraccing?’ Typically, fraccing fluid is made up of 90 per cent water, 9.5 per cent sand and 0.5 per cent chemical additives. Water is pumped down a petroleum well at pressure to create small cracks in the targeted rock formations. It also assists to transport sand and additives through the well. Sand is used to hold the small cracks (typically 3-6mm wide) open, to allow the trapped natural

gas within the rock to escape and flow freely up the well. Chemical additives are typically used to improve the transportation of sand and prevent growth of bacteria within the well, which can cause erosion. As part of the government’s commitment to be open and transparent, the department requires petroleum operators to publically disclose all chemicals used during a fraccing activity on our website. These transparency requirements, introduced in August last year, go above and beyond current State and Commonwealth chemical law requirements. Additionally, the community can be assured all proposed fraccing chemicals are thoroughly risk assessed by the department under three separate regimes – environment, safety and well design – before they are approved or rejected. It’s also important to note that in the past 50 years in WA in which 780 fraccs have been performed, there have been no known cases of fraccing chemicals contaminating a water aquifer. Obviously our strict regulation comes into play here, but there are other aspects that impact this – including the durability of petroleum wells and the sheer distance between WA’s aquifers and any fraccing activity. For more information, please contact DMP’s Jason Medd on 9222 0442 or visit www.dmp. wa.gov.au/shaleandtightgas.

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates Have you had a feed of crabs yet this year? They are superb eating and we are so lucky to have them here and available for us to catch as a fresh feed. This year, they have been sensational yet again, and the few times I have eaten them, they have been very full of meat. Targeting them with drop nets or scooping them is relatively easy and most locals have a drop net or two in their shed. Sometimes you can even use these from the beaches along the gulf, for those who do not have a dinghy. According to the Department of Fisheries website, the blue swimmer crab is the most sought-after recreational species in WA. The blue swimmers are super sweet and cooking them in salt water is what we recommend. There is also an odd crab that shows up in the nets, which has long eyes. It is called a Stalk-eyed swimmer crab. This crab has a real smoky flavour. There is also another crab that is around the same size as a blue swimmer, but it has more pindan colours to it and the carapace is shaped differently. This is a coral crab. Of course, we also get the green mud crabs in Exmouth.

As well as crabbing, we are smack in the middle of winter and local charter operators have been getting into some good sized cobia and Spanish mackerel. The fly-fishing has had some thumper bonefish turning up too. Sailfish and marlin seem to always be out there and those anglers who are game, are stretching their arms on GTs. If you are a visitor to the area and want to get in to this type of sports fishing, a charter is more of an option these days with several operating. In years gone by there were hardly any operators doing this type of fishing, which involves a lot of catch and release of various sports fish. Of course, if you are visiting or a local and enjoy the shore fishing, we are blessed to have such an array available with baitfish, such as gardies and squid, to bread-andbutter species like flathead and whiting. The list of species available to the shore based anglers is very large indeed. In fact, during a competition here there were 26 different species caught from the shore in just one weekend. If you’re not sure what to target and where, then drop in to Tackle World and ask for the shore-based fishing guide.

In other matches, Glory 1 defeated Glory 2 and Salt ran out winners over Nickol 3. The league now takes a break for the school holidays. The end of the school term not only marks the halfway point of the school year, but also that of the little athletics season. And despite a number of families leaving town for a holiday break, it was great to still see 58 athletes turn up at the club’s latest meet as they collectively broke 168 personal bests. U7 Charlie Hancock was a star on the night as he smashed five PBs, including sprinting 100m in under 20secs. U7 Meesha Leo also claimed five PBs for the night, including clearing two-metres for the first time in the long jump. Eight-year-olds, Jake Buck and Rahni Kammere, took the honours in their javelin division with personal best throws of 11.6m and 8.8m respectively. Kiran Byles continues to improve on his amazing Turbo Javelin achievements with an 18.7m throw on the night, fantastic for a nineyear-old. Nine-year-old Emily Krueger continued on her great discus form with 12.5m throw – an improvement on her previous best of 1.5m.

Maddie Keogh continues to record personal best improvements and notched up a two metre improvement on her discus for the night with a six-metre throw – well done. Desiree Ieremia returned to the podium for the 100m sprint, recording the fastest time of the night with a 15.44sec run. Austin Bloomfield took out second with a time of 15.48, and Keisha James ran in third with a time of 15.81sec. The 400m distance event for the night was a dead heat with Kiran Byles and Austin Bloomfiled both recording a time of 1min22sec, followed closely by Bridget Camisa with a time of 1min 22.8sec. A further record for the season was broken with Austin Bloomfield jumping over fourmetres for the first time in the season during the long jump. ESS continued their support of the club with a great BBQ dinner to keep the hunger pains away during the night, thank you to Josh our club chef who continues to make the BBQ his own. The club takes a two-week break during the rest of the school holidays, but will be back in action on Friday July 26.

St Luke’s claim Australian footy cup By Clint Degebrodt Saint Luke’s College in Karratha added some shiny new silverware to the school’s trophy cabinet in late June as they took out the grand final of the V Swans Year 10 Cup played in South Hedland. Lead by the effervescent Matt Lorne, who marshalled his team from the midfield all day, St Luke’s defeated the Hedland High school team in a polished display of Australian footy. Both Hedland and St Luke’s had been undefeated when they met in the pool matches with each scoring narrow victories over Tom Price, Newman, Roebourne and Karratha District Highs. • All Girls Auskick Karratha

of Roebourne, is also highly accomplished.

Karratha’s young female footy players have finished their second ever year of All Girls Auskick after benefiting from the sporting expertise of local role models Megan O’Mara and Angela Doyle.

She is a four time premiership player with Perth power Aussie Rules club, the Coastal Titans, and has twice represented Western Australia in interstate clashes.

Megan and Angela have spent their entire lives participating in sport. Angela, who works for the V Swans Program in Roebourne, has represented Australia in three sports, including touch rugby and Gaelic and Australian football. In addition, she was the forward line coach for the North West WA Under 16 boy’s team that last year won the division three title at the AFL’s national carnival in just its first year in the competition. That set up a great grand final and it was the St Luke’s wingman Maeva Walker controlling his side of the ground and dominant centre half forward Kodee Jackson, who played key roles in setting up the victory.

Saints physical education teacher Brian Homan said he was pleased with his St Luke’s team.

“They did the job well and won the carnival as a result, well done boys.”

“I gave them the job of setting the game plan and they were also asked to keep up the support and chatter,” Brian said.

She also coached Western Australia’s girls’18’s side in its first two years of existence and said she is now enjoying a new challenge in the Pilbara. “It’s great to be out in the Pilbara and sharing my love of sport – most of all [it is] the smiles on the kids [that] make it fun for the me, I’ll be back,” Megan said. Megan praised the parents of the Pilbara girls for being actively involved in each session, and said it was great that females were included in the local program. for our kids to get a bit of extra knowledge, and continue to bridge the gap that exists for developing regional athletes,” Pilbara Development Academy manager Clint Degebrodt said. Clint said the program helped regional athletes gain access to elite coaching and enabled local coaches to learn new skills and work on their professional development. During the sessions, the players were taken through cutting edge dynamic warm up techniques, unique speed specific stretching and a series of exercises that are used by

coaches to strengthen sprinters. The boys were also instructed on how to apply these techniques to their football training and excercise routines. “It’s great to come into contact with quality people from Athletics WA, and we are all keen to put what we learnt straight into our footy,” Young player Campbell Garratt said. The V Swans team would like to thank the Pilbara Office of the Department of Sport and Recreation as well as Morgan Mair from Athletics WA.

Wickham bucks the old saying, ‘Take no prisoners’ By Clint Degebrodt and Ben Leahy With new teams the Gold Coast Suns and Greater Western Sydney Giants joining the elite Australian Football League in recent seasons, it has forced others in the competition to look for recruits in new places. This has included recruiting tall American ruck men, Irish dashers from Gaelic Football and even players from Papua New Guinea. Now it seems one local Pilbara club is also benefiting from thinking outside the recruiting box. The North Pilbara Football League’s Wickham Wolves currently sit on top of the ladder

with just one loss to their name and much of that success can be linked back to the members of their team from Roebourne Regional Prison. “[The guys have been] very positive, we have coaches, water runners, an umpire, team runner and nine to 12 players from that group, so it’s been great for us, yes.” The new team members and support staff are participants in the New Horizons Program, which supplements their education by enabling them to give their time to help local footy. The program is delivered by V Swans in partnership with the Department of Corrections and the Roebourne Regional Prison. “The program involves

minimum security prisoners that have reached strict guidelines and [demonstrated] long term positive behavior, participating in education and footy experiences,” V Swans Roebourne regional manager Angela Doyle said. “These blokes are so keen that they also help umpire, mark the grounds and have even been involved in making minor repairs to ovals so that the kids are safe and happy.” Prisoner Zeiler has been umpiring junior footy matches for his adopted club, the Roebourne Magpies. “It’s great fun being able to give to the community and be involved in something that keep kids active and busy on weekends,” he said.

Auskick closes its season Guest Wing soars to Marble Bar victory By Nigel Weston at the Leisureplex

The Marble Bar horse races held last July 6 might be a famous Pilbara social event, but they also had plenty of action on the track with stayer Guest Wing blitzing his rivals in the day’s main event. Guest Wing returned to his best form during the $30,000 Newcrest-Telfer Gold Mine Marble Bar Cup, run over 1600m, to run away from the competition. A good field of eight runners, including three last start winners, lined up for the iconic race, but Guest Wing simply blew his rivals away in a scorching win. At the 700m mark, apprentice jockey, Sasha Starley, let Guest Wing go around the field and in a number of strides the race changed complexion and any other horse who may have looked a winning chance, suddenly had no chance. By the time the runners neared the home corner, Guest Wing was two lengths clear and off and gone. Under his huge weight of 65.5kg, the horse withheld a late charge from Chenonceau Lady, who was game in defeat even though the result was never in doubt. Trainer, Alan McNamara Jnr has done a great job with the 2011 Perth Cup winner, who carries huge weights around the Pilbara circuit of races. Guest Wing will only improve as the distances increase, and he will no doubt be aimed at The Roebourne and Port Hedland Cups. Chenonceau Lady completed a very eye catching run, she took ground off the winner in the straight and will be a lightweight chance in The Roebourne Cup on July 27.

By Clint Degebrodt The Karratha Auskick Centre wrapped up its 2013 program with a fantastic exhibition as part of the Leisureplex opening and more than 120 parents coaches and players on hand to enjoy footy skills indoors.

Terre Rouge Ballet dances in The Enchanted Forest The Enchanted Forest came to life in Dampier recently when Terre Rouge Ballet performed their annual concert to full houses in both their matinee and evening shows. During the performances, the dancers transitioned from the depths of midnight, when night shadows and witches inhabit the forest, through the sunrise and into the bright light of morning when the woods come to life with butterflies, gypsies, bluebirds and boggle-eyed frogs. Later, the dancers transformed into pixies playing in the afternoon sun before fireflies signalled the falling night. Twinkling stars and night fairies then came out to welcome the darkness before the whole cast danced
