Medical specialists now just a Skype away By Ben Leahy Pilbara residents can now access specialist medical treatment via a video link-up similar to Skype, potentially saving them weeks of waiting and thousands of dollars in travel and accommodation expenses. The Anywhere Healthcare service run by Medibank enables Pilbara doctors to refer patients to a range of specialists based in cities around Australia, such as Melbourne and Sydney. Patients then visit their local doctor’s clinic at the time of the appointment, and the specialist conducts the consultation over a video link-up on computer. Those with Medicare can claim the cost of the specialist consultation using bulk billing. Dr Carolyn Valdez from Kinetic Health clinic is the first Karratha doctor to use the service and has so far referred three patients to Anywhere Healthcare specialists. “In my experience, with some [Anywhere Healthcare] specialists, it has only taken two weeks and then you can see them,” Dr Valdez said. “The specialists I have seen have been really good also. “They spend time talking with the patients and the first appointments will always take an hour or so, except with the dermatologist which was about 20 minutes.” Currently offered in Karratha, Port Hedland and Newman, the Anywhere Healthcare service provides Pilbara residents with an alternative to flying to Perth for treatment or waiting, on average, one to three months to secure a face-to-face appointment with a visiting specialist. The range of Anywhere Healthcare specialists includes geriatricians, paediatricians, psychiatrists, dermatologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, oncologists, ophthalmologists, psychogeriatricians, fertility specialists and GPs. National medical director of Anywhere Healthcare Dr Judy Balint said “a big advantage” was that

Dr Carolyn Valdez (right) is among the first doctors in the Pilbara to offer the Anywhere Healthcare service. the service was backed by federal government funding. “This funding subsidises the cost of the [specialist] consultations,” Dr Balint said. “The response from patients and GPs has been overwhelmingly positive, in fact, we’ve had over 500 GPs across regional Australia sign up to use the service so far.” Karratha’s Dr Valdez said the service helped her provide better treatment to patients. She said local GPs sit in on Anywhere Healthcare consultations and perform physical examinations of the patient and other activities on behalf of the specialist. They can also seek advice from the specialist. “If [as a doctor] you have any questions, you can ask the specialist straight away and they will be able to answer any thoughts you have about managing the patient’s case,” Dr Valdez said. “It makes things easier getting that instant answer … [rather than] waiting for the letter from the specialist to come later on.”

Friday 13 December from 7pm @ the Moonrise Cinema Short films for teens aged 13+ years. free entry. An inspiring, meaningful and fun-filled

Dr Valdez said the Anywhere Healthcare system worked fine for most patients but there are times when it might be better for patients to see a specialist face-to-face. She also said that while another doctor from the Kinetic Health clinic was trialling the service, not all doctors would offer it. She said some doctors would find it challenging to accommodate the extra time needed to sit in on the specialist consultations and be punctual for the appointments. “Some doctors have reservations given they lead a very busy life,” she said. “Sometimes as a doctor, you can’t say that I will be running on time with my regular consultations … [but] you can’t afford to be late for a specialist appointment. “From my experience, I will put a 15-minute break before and after the appointment to accommodate any late general practice patients or extra time within the specialist consultation itself.” Dr Valdez said she bulk bills patients for the consultations along with the specialist’s bulk-billed fees.

Karratha’s $2bn town centre opens to public By Tamara Binamat The much-anticipated opening of Karratha’s new main street, Sharpe Ave, will kick off today with a street party. The road is finally complete after a year-long transformation to provide a better connection between the city centre and Dampier Highway. Stage 1 of Karratha City Centre Infrastructure Works (KCCIW) was funded with a $65 million Royalties for Regions grant to establish a more functional city centre. LandCorp chief executive Ross Holt said the transformation would provide residents and visitors with a modern urban centre where they can relax, socialise and shop. “The works to improve connectivity in the city centre will help establish a stronger sense of community and position Karratha as a great place to settle permanently,” Mr Holt said. “It will help create new retail, commercial and residential opportunities that are easily accessible and complement the existing township.” Stage 2 of the KCCIW is expected to begin early next year, continuing the renewal of Sharpe Avenue with the development of The Quarter. Located on the main street at the site of the old aquatic centre, The Quarter will feature nearly 10,000sq m of retail and office space, apartments for service

workers, a multi-storey carpark and a public square. Valued around $120 million, The Quarter will also house a new hotel with restaurant and bar facilities. A total of $2 billion worth of development projects have been either completed or are underway in the town. Mr Holt said the rejuvenation of Karratha’s main street will set a new standard of living for Karratha. “We want to celebrate this remarkable achievement and also thank the local community and businesses for their patience during the construction period,” he said. Premier Colin Barnett and the Minister for Regional Development and Lands Brendon Grylls will officially open Sharpe Ave at the Saturday street party from 6-8pm. Residents will enjoy free children’s rides and entertainment including a bouncy castle, slide, teacup ride, facepainters, stilt walkers and fire twirlers. Students from local dance group Dance Kix will perform on stage and Santa is expected to make a visit. “We invite all Karratha residents and visitors to come down to celebrate Karratha’s coming of age with a family-friendly street party in between the two Pelago complexes,” Mr Holt said. “Local businesses will sell their food and drinks as we mark the opening of Sharpe Ave and enjoy the strong sense of community spirit so evident in Karratha.”

Red Dog reborn By Ben Leahy

Locals at Key Spot Services and Nickol Bay Jewellers were among those lucky enough to meet Red Dog when he went on his first walk last Friday.

If you thought Red Dog – having gained membership to the Transport Workers’ Union and had a statue and movie made in his honour – couldn’t possibly earn any more tributes, then think again. He is set to become the Karratha Visitors Centre’s (KVC) official face of the region. The centre unveiled a new Red Dog mascot at the November 30 street party to mark the opening of the town’s redeveloped main street. KVC manager Barry Harris said he hoped Red Dog would attract young kids to the visitors centre and provide a marketable face to potential tourists around Australia. “Our core business is grey nomads, but we are looking at ways to engage locals and the younger section of our community,” Mr Harris said. “And from the brief test walk around we did with Red Dog on Friday last week, he was very well received by the community on the smaller scale. The true test will be [how the community reacts to him] this Saturday night at the street party.” The new mascot comes as the Shire of Roebourne looks to cut the amount of funding it spends on the visitors centre. “We now have to pretty much make a dollar out of everything we do because funding is that tight,” Mr Harris said. Looking for new revenue streams, the centre noticed how popular GWN7’s Doopa Dog mascot was when it visited Karratha for the FeNaClNG Festival. “Red Dog was born out of a desire to have more of a Pilbara-based identity that kids could

gravitate towards rather than having something that was sent up from Bunbury,” Harris said. The centre is now planning school holiday activities with Red Dog, has made Red Dog colouring pads and stickers and is working on a new storybook about the old dog’s adventures to help bring more children to play at the centre. But equally importantly, Red Dog can be hired out to appear at community events and children’s parties. Mr Harris expects that within a year, this will cover the cost of making the Red Dog outfit, which contains an ice vest and cooling unit. “I’m pleased to say that while Red Dog has cost us a few dollars, we’ve already got three bookings for him,” he said. “We imagine we’ll get 40 hires for him over the next year and that will see him become revenue positive.” The centre also plans to take him to touristfocused events, such as the Perth and Melbourne camping and caravan shows. They will also bring him out during peak periods at the centre. Mr Harris said that over the past 18 months, the centre had been collecting demographic data about its visitors, such as their nationality, age, length of stay and impressions of the Pilbara. “Not only that but we can also tell what portion of our door numbers don’t spend a cent while they are in the centre,” he said. “For, instance, a third of the people who come through the centre part with no cash – they use us purely as an information base. “We can use Red Dog to directly market to those people in the centre and do things like tell them about our new Pilbara Coast apps. “He will be a really nice add-on to engage people and stir the imagination a little.”

EAST PILBARA SHIRE UPDATE Welcome to the heart of the Pilbara

November 2013

President’s Message

Take Our Public Health Survey

Thank you for taking the time to read the latest Shire News Update.

What are your thoughts on public health in the East Pilbara?

Multiple fires, started by lightning have been burning in the Shire over the past two weeks. Shire of East Pilbara officers have worked with mining companies and Volunteers and DFES to ensure that the fires were extinguished or controlled and that they didn’t threaten any assets.

So far, we have identified and analysed local public health and wellbeing activities, data and trends and held extensive consultations with the staff. Now it is your turn to have a say in the future of the Shire. We want to hear from you about what the Council and its local partners could do to promote health, happiness and wellbeing of the Shire residents.

All this is a timely reminder to all residents to ensure their preparation for the season is undertaken and that they comply with the Fire Break Notice. It would appear that our grasslands have dried out early this year making the threat of fire more prevalent than ever, so please do your utmost to prepare for the summer.

The Shire of East Pilbara needs your help. We are developing a community based Public Health Plan, which is a strategic document that will identify priorities for the Shire for the next 3-5 years.

If you would like to have your say go to our website and click on “Take Our Public Health Survey” and follow the instructions OR paste the link below into your browser to complete an electronic survey (it will only take you 10 minutes). http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/M5DSLT9

I would also like to encourage residents of the East Pilbara to have their say about the future of public health in the region by taking the questionnaire on our website www.eastpilbara.wa.gov.au The survey will take about 10 minutes and the information you provide is valuable to us - so thank you very much for helping out if you can!

K6

Finally I would like to thank my fellow councillors for their confidence by voting that I remain President of the Shire of East Pilbara. I am truly honoured to be given this role and will continue to do my best for the Council, the Shire and most importantly, to the residents we serve. Lynne Craigie – Shire President

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

Allard Engineering’s Paul Cornwell with the waterjet cutter; and what it can do.

Tradies cut artistic figures using waterjet By Ben Leahy When Tim Allard set up a branch of Allard Engineering in Karratha six months ago, he brought with him a machine that he says is doing more than just aiding industrial efficiency. He claims his CNC waterjet cutter is also bringing out an artistic side to local tradesmen and women Operated by computer, the cutter uses water and abrasive sand to cut through materials ranging from steel, titanium and brass to timber, rubber and granite. This enables it to be a used industrially to cut nearly anything, from roofing cleats and metal tools to kitchen benches, more quickly and cheaply than if a tradesperson did it manually. However, Mr Allard said, Pilbara locals are now also employing the cutter more artistically to make ornate fences for their gardens and flashy detailings for their pimped up Holdens and Fords. “Most of the people we deal with are engineering companies, so they’ve got drawings,” Allard said. “But quite often the public come in and say ‘Can you make this?’ and we go ‘OK’. “We’ve had designs done on beer napkins, even a template made out of cardboard and basically we just sit down with a ruler and then transfer it to the computer.” Mr Allard said his machine is the only waterjet cutter between Geraldton and Darwin and it is more accurate and environmentally friendly than laser or plasma cutters. It works by inputting the design for a cut into computer software. The waterjet then runs continuously until it has completed the cut, allowing it to make multiple copies in one go. The job is also stored on Allard Engineering’s computers and can be

recalled and done again anytime in the future. Using water and sand, Mr Allard said, is also more environmentally friendly than laser cutters, which use “all kinds of gases and heat”. He said the waterjet was recently used to cut panels from the bottom of a ship that were coated in a potentially toxic material. “If you tried cutting this stuff with an oxy, the fumes it would give off would kill people,” he said. “But we had the whole lot cut for them in a day and a half and no environmental issues.” One customer of Allard’s, a Karratha resident called Mick, did not want to name his employer in the paper but said it had saved money using the waterjet. He said his employer was a large engineering company involved in construction on mining and oil and gas sites. “A lot of what we use is structural steel, so building steel structures out of beams and columns, that type of thing,” he said. “Allard’s can pump out jobs for us pretty quick and that saves time as well as the cost of labour.” However, Mick now has a personal project in mind for the waterjet. With his Karratha neighbours able to easily look over the low fences in his backyard, he plans to create an ornate screen to shield his backyard swimming pool. The metal screen will have intricate shapes cut out of it using the waterjet before Mick then treats it with hydrochloric acid to give it a rusty rustic feel. “I got the idea watching a TV program,” he said. “And I thought hello this looks like something [Allard’s] waterjet can do.” “It will absolutely suit the Pilbara’s [red dirt] and I was even thinking about incorporating a gecko into the design as well.

Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalisation. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

’Tis the season to be safe on the roads By Tamara Binamat

DISABLED ACCESS

Hillview Road, Karratha

The Pilbara Industry Road Safety Alliance (PIRSA) has united with the Pilbara Traffic Office to discuss road safety initiatives and police traffic operations ahead of the festive season. PIRSA is made up of members from the mining industry, WA police and other government agencies. It meets every month to discuss road safety issues and initiatives for the Pilbara. As a result of those meetings, the Pilbara Traffic Office is ramping up festive season operations and has already bought two crash trailers, which feature a car that has been in a serious crash, to deter unsafe driving. The trailers, which are funded by PIRSA resource industry members, will be based in Port Hedland and Karratha.

NOT SURE IF PROPERTY INVESTMENT IS RIGHT FOR YOU? OUR PROPERTY INVESTMENT SPECIALIST IS HERE TO HELP YOU FIND OUT.

Police are ramping up their traffic safety operations for the festive season; PIRSA members help launch the initiative. Photos by Tamara Binamat Police will also focus on drink-driving operations, with more booze buses, police cars and random breath testing. The Pilbara Traffic Office will step up highway patrols to monitor drivers’ speeds and ensure seatbelts are used properly. PIRSA chair Richard Cohen represents mining giant Rio Tinto. He said the Pilbara’s crash statistics and the increase in traffic due to the mining industry means all stakeholders must work together to find solutions. “One of the key things we want to do is raise awareness of road safety,” he said. “The group is about improving road safety and getting to a point where everyone can drive safely on our roads, so that everyone can avoid serious injuries and fatalities.” Sgt Steve Scott from the Pilbara Traffic Office said extensive

operations organised for Christmas include ensuring people plan ahead for end-of-year celebrations so they are not tempted to drink and drive. “We want people to have a think beforehand about how they are going to get home,” he said. “The booze bus will be out and we’ll also be doing targeted patrols of vehicles. We know that Christmas is [one of our] busiest times of the year. “We want people to be more responsible, to think about what they’re doing, to plan ahead and those people that remain in town can expect to be heavily policed.” Although many residents leave Pilbara

towns because of work shutdowns over Christmas, Sgt Scott said there is also an influx of visitors to the region. “There are a lot more caravans on the road and people holidaying in general, so we just want people to be patient and careful and do the right thing,” he said. Road users can expect an increased police presence from December until the New Year. Speeding, seatbelts and drinkdriving will all incur double demerit points. “The ultimate goal is to make sure we have a safe and happy Christmas and that we don’t see anybody die or seriously injured over that period.”

Sticky situation at Newman Airport By Tamara Binamat

Year 1 and 2 students with CITIC Pacific Mining project administrator Emma Fan.

Students step in the right direction The feet of Roebourne District High School students will be protected during the scorching summer months thanks to a donation of shoes by CITIC Pacific Mining. Employees from CITIC Pacific Mining’s Sino Club collected thongs and sneakers from other staff and contractors, based at the site and from the Perth office. Cash was also collected and donations were used to buy additional pairs of shoes at Kmart in Karratha. Gary Rayson, general manager of health and safety for CITIC Pacific Mining, handed over dozens of shoes to the

Roebourne District High School Principal Erica Prosser. “When our staff learnt that many of the children did not have shoes, they were very keen to help out,” he said. “At the mine site, we understand how harsh the environment can be and the importance of having good quality footwear. It’s the same for school, shoes protect children’s feet from heat, sharp objects such as broken glass and prickles, allowing them to remain active and safe.” Principal Prosser welcomed the donation.

“It’s essential that as the weather becomes hotter, all children wear shoes to school,” she said. “Our students are very grateful for CITIC’s response to what is a basic but very important need.” Community involvement is vital to the long-term success of CITIC Pacific Mining’s Sino Iron project. The company recently extended its three-year partnership with the Clontarf Foundation whose educationbased program supports Aboriginal boys and young men through sport.

Flights to and from Newman were disrupted for two separate reasons this week after a cracked aircraft windscreen caused a priority landing and an issue with Newman Airport’s tarmac forced a closure. Passengers on Qantas flight 1091 were subjected to a priority landing on Tuesday after a crack on the inner windscreen was discovered. The 92 passengers were returned to Newman and re-accommodated on the next flight. A Qantas spokesperson said engineers were investigating the cause of the crack. “Aircraft windscreens are multi-layered and made up of separate internal and external panes of glass as well as a vinyl sheet through the middle,” the spokesperson explained. “Only the inner windscreen was cracked. The external windscreen and the vinyl layer were unaffected.” The incident happened barely one day after Newman Airport reopened after an unplanned closure. The airport was due for a scheduled closure last week while the Shire of East Pilbara undertook maintenance works on the runway and aprons.

BRAND NEW HOMES FOR SALE OR LEASE

A bitumen sealant was applied and the airport reopened at 10am on Sunday as scheduled, but it was closed by 6pm when the product was affected by the heat of the sun, causing the runway and aircraft tyres to become “sticky”. The airport was closed until late Monday while the product cured properly. On Monday, the Shire released a statement promising to monitor the runway. “The Shire will continue to monitor and assess the situation and believe we now have measures in place that [will] allow airport operations to continue without any further disruptions,” acting chief executive officer Sian Appleton said. The closure of the airport on Monday halted the official opening ceremony of the Pilbara’s newest mine site at Jimblebar. Premier Colin Barnett was due to attend the ceremony but with no flights into Newman and the nearest airport two hours drive from Newman, the ceremony was cancelled. The BHP-operated mine site opening was rescheduled and alternative travel options were arranged for staff, including charter services and landing aircraft at alternative locations.

Yogi offers holistic alternative By Tamara Binamat The Pilbara region is a hard place to picture men embracing meditation techniques and the gentle, gymnastic smoothness of yoga, but travelling yogi Lee Chamberlain said a surprising number are attending his one-off course. In Karratha to present a special meditation and yoga two-week course, Chamberlain said the health benefits of combining meditation and yoga are holistic, as you are exercising the mind, body and spirit. “They’re both synonymous,” Chamberlain explained.

daily as it was outlined 7500 years ago in India,” Chamberlain said. “The meditation involves still sitting with a focus on different areas of the body, with some visualisation and some gentle guidance from me.” Chamberlain said the health benefits include calmness of mind, poise, stillness and the ability to be calm and less reactive in everyday living. “People should come along to experience yoga daily, to actually see how the system works when it’s practised all together, and when it’s practised every day,” Chamberlain said.

Many see yoga as a bendy, stretchy class with women in lycra, but yoga literally means union, and meditation is a fundamental part of yoga ... because you are focusing on breathing, so the mind stills.

“Many see yoga as a bendy, stretchy class with women in lycra, but yoga literally means union, and meditation is a fundamental part of yoga. “Throughout the practice there is a meditation one goes into because you are focusing on breathing, so the mind stills.” Chamberlain, sitting barefoot on a mat on a wooden floor, said the workshops are held at a studio at Mystical Avalon Alchemy, an alternative shop on Hedland Place. “I’m offering the immersion so people can learn all of the techniques together, and practise

She weighed 8lbs 7oz, and measured 49cm long. Their sincere thanks goes to the staff at NBH for their help and care.

Mary Muthoni Mulloy October 8 Mum Rosemary, dad Mark and big sister Malaika would like to announce the safe arrival of the newest member of their family, Mary Muthoni Mulloy. She was born on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 9.10am weighing 8.75lbs and measuring 55cm long. They wish to thank all the staff at Nickol Bay Hospital for their exceptional care and their special thanks goes to Dr Lloyd Tang and midwives Brigitte and Miranda who were involved in the birth of both their daughters.

“That’s the fundamental reason why I’ve offered it. “Come and try it every day and see what changes actually occur when it’s practised daily.” And it doesn’t stop at the mental health benefits – there are plenty of physical benefits as well, including a release of tension from muscles and having more energy. “When a muscle is contracting, energy is actually going to that place so when the tension’s gone there’s more energy in your being,” Chamberlain explained. “If you practise daily and you work diligently you’re going to develop healthy living practices, and also you’re going to get the maximum benefit from the techniques as they were traditionally taught. “People will find out an awful lot about themselves and have the opportunity to cleanse and purge throughout this workshop and incorporate healthy habits into their everyday lives.” The sessions run every day except Fridays until the end of this week. By Tamara Binamat The Australian Hotels Association Western Australia has announced the winners for the 2013 Hotel and Hospitality Awards for Excellence, and the North West has taken home its share of honours. The Karratha International Hotel and the Esplanade in Port Hedland competed against hospitality venues around the state to win the Best Environmental Practice and Best Redeveloped Venue awards. AHA (WA) CEO Bradley Woods said the awards recognise accommodation hotels, pubs, bars, dining and entertainment venues as well as employees that demonstrate excellence within the hospitality industry. The AHA (WA) presented 42 awards that recognise the best of the industry in WA. “There was tough competition in all award categories,” Mr Woods said. “This year, hospitality venues in Western Australia have again provided excellent venues and services for the public to enjoy.” Among the 1200 guests who joined the finalists and award recipients at the James Squire Gala Ball in Perth was Donald Stewart,

general manager at the Karratha International Hotel. Mr Stewart said his team was proud to win the Best Environmental Practice award. “We are all faced with the same challenges when it comes to managing our energy, both from a cost point of view and the impact on our environment,” he said. “We embarked upon a program of identifying where and how we use our energy around the property and from there established what actions we could take to be more efficient and cost effective.” Mr Stewart said the hotel introduced a voltage optimiser that regulates supply at a constant 230 volts, preventing peaks and troughs in consumption, minimising costs and potential damage to equipment. They also installed heat-pump hot water and split-system air-conditioning to the rooms, replaced a central air handling system with more efficient split units and installed LED lighting throughout the buildings. The KIH was up against the Holiday Inn Perth City Centre. The Esplanade Hotel in Port Hedland beat the Brass Monkey Hotel, Newman Hotel, The Butterworth Bar & Kitchen and The Craftsman for WA’s Best Redeveloped Venue. A full list of winners can be seen at hospitalitywa.com/awards.

Many people don’t realize that they have options to stay in Australia – often as a permanent resident.

Being a migrant myself, I understand the difficulties involved in moving to a new country. I have been living and working in WA as an Australian registered migration agent for over 10 years and have assisted several thousand people to obtain temporary and permanent residence visas. My commitment to you is that I will give you a clear assessment of your visa options and whether you have a good chance of success. If I don’t think your application will succeed I will tell you this up-front. My firm specializes in Permanent Residence visas such as Employer Nomination (186), Regional Sponsored Migration (187), General Skilled (189/190) as well as Temporary work (457) and Partner Visas. If you admire the tumble turns of Olympic gymnasts or the flying acrobatics of circus performers, but always figured it was too hard to learn, there is now a class for you. The Karratha Gymnastics Club is running adult gymnastics classes at the Leisureplex every Monday from 6.30-8.30pm, which are open to budding gymnasts of all levels for $10 a session. And even if the only parallel bar you’ve ever heard of is a chocolate one, you can still have fun, according to gymnastics coach Rachel Lawrence. “Anyone can come along no matter what skill level they’ve got, we will help them out,” Lawrence said. “It doesn’t take much training to use [the equipment], it is more about what you are comfortable in doing and we’ll help you do it.” And the club’s coaches have a good record of helping their charges achieve their goals. Local gymnast Erin Gethin was recently named the Shire of Roebourne Junior Sportswoman of the Year and signed to Gymnastics Western Australia’s Talent ID Squad after participating in the local junior program. Leigh Perry has only been attending the adult gymnastic classes for four weeks, but he can

Having been a fanatic for bouncing and somersaulting on the family trampoline as a child, Perry was instantly intrigued by the class. “I wandered past ... and I thought it looked awesome,” he said. Perry said he finds the frenzied tumble turns more relaxing than having a referee or opponent telling you what to do. “[The tumble turns are] high energy, but before and after class, we also do a lot of stretching and flexibility,” Perry said. “[It’s] really relaxing, peaceful and I’m getting strong as well.”

Bluewater Tackle Exmouth Fishing Report By Jenni Gates The summer heat backed off this week with a few days of cooler temperatures and calm weather. The waning moon has meant better tides for reef-fishing anglers and those chasing the really deep water species, such as ruby job fish, are getting geared up for these more gentle neap tides. One lucky angler chasing reef fish this year was Albany resident Damon McIntyre, who caught a whopping offshore mangrove jack in 70m of water off Tantabiddi. We get a few of these show up in Exmouth and some anglers are rather perplexed with their size. Most people think mangrove jacks are only a small fish found up the creeks among the mangroves. But you will also encounter them inside the reef, around the islands on the west side and occasionally out in deep water. The smaller gulf fish seem to be much sweeter than their larger relatives, but we all know that if it’s red, it’s usually a good eating fish. Local fly-fishing guide Brett Wolf has been having some incredible days out chasing permit this week. These species are sought by flyfishermen everywhere because their fussy and flighty behaviour makes them difficult to catch. Wolf was out with client Francois from France for a few days, which included one insane session where they caught 10 permit.

Damon McIntyre with his huge jack. They also caught a variety of other species, including the feisty golden trevally. Leigh Freestone has been out chasing big blues in his trailer boat and smashed a 60kg yellowfin tuna on Sunday. The large tuna snavelled a Bonze lure and had the Shimano Tiagra 37kg reel screaming. These fish can be difficult to land because they sit deep and power through the water. Planing them up and having them by the boat can be a challenge and is not recommended without a proper black magic harness system. Freestone also caught a 180kg blue on the same day, despite some rather rough weather, with the crew managing to get these two awesome fish among the swell and whitecaps. Finally, don’t forget the Freediving Fiesta is on this weekend. It is two days of spearfishing and further information can be found in-store or on the Exmouth Game Fishing Club’s website.

Wynand Jordaan, aka Big V.

Mighty crosswinds have roadies ducking for cover By Jason Attard The Good Country Roadies cyclists have a new identity after the first orders were placed last week for their new jerseys and riding kits. With local riders having had their say on the jersey design via a lively Facebook thread, the GCR members will now be able to proudly represent the Pilbara as they take part in races across Australia. The group are also looking forward to tackling a new cycling route through Dampier in their upcoming 100km ride on Saturday, December 7, while plans are currently being laid for the GCR Christmas bash next month. The conditions have been tough lately, as winds have picked up over the past month and last Saturday’s 70km group ride was no different.

At one point the group went into a V formation inspired by the Mighty Ducks ice hockey movies.

Jason Hunter Racing located in Kyneton Victoria is seeking new clients to join our progressive young stable. If you have thought about racing a horse but never new how please contact Jason and see how enjoyable and affordable racehorse ownership can be. Jason Hunter 0407 845 579, or email jasonhunterracing@bigpond.com

With a stiff south-westerly breeze cutting along the group’s route from the Karratha hospital out along Millstream Rd, fewer riders than usual took the start line. Wisely, the 50/30 group, who usually ride a relaxed 50km at a speed no greater than 30km/h, joined the main bunch for part of the journey out. This afforded them extra protection from the wind as they tucked into the slipstream of the riders in the bunch. The nasty crosswind even had more experienced riders ducking for cover, and at one point the group went into a V formation inspired by the Mighty Ducks ice hockey movies. This all came to an end, however, when Keith Johns and Chris Rampant went to the front of the group and lifted the pace to 37km/h. Both blamed each other for “half wheeling” (hanging slightly behind the other rider to avoid the

full force of the headwind), but this didn’t last long as Keithy blew a gasket and dropped back into the bunch to look for shelter. Chris continued at the same pace for quite a while, showing the solid form he has built up from his training this year. As is usual on Saturday rides, the group began to jockey for position as they came up to the sprint at the halfway point of the ride. On this occasion it ended up in a six-way battle, with Mike Rossiter McLaren taking the line ahead of a hard-charging Wynand Jordaan, who is better known as Big V. The ride home was aided slightly by the breeze and the pace went up by 3-4km/h, as it usually does. But the erratic breeze still had an impact, with the bunch going from enjoying a tailwind to suddenly facing a headwind as it rounded bends on the road. This gave opportunities to breakaway riders, who twice popped off the front of the group. Chris Rampant was involved both times, earning him the Most Combative rider award for the week – a great effort. An honourable mention goes to Troy Atkinson, who not only rode all the way out into the wind alone but also joined Chris in his first breakaway attempt. But despite Chris’ efforts, the breakaway attempts were closed down through some great teamwork in the main bunch as it swung into a “paceline” formation in which every rider took a turn in lifting the speed to 40km/h. This continued until 2km from the final sprint line, when the usual suspects began jockeying for position. Trevor Phelps put in a strong surge for the finish, driving to within 400m of the line before Kim Sparks came over the top, leading to the 150m point. It was then that Jason Attard, having held Kim’s wheel, dashed out of the slipstream to sprint home first. With a tough morning’s riding under their belts, the group then rolled off for a coffee and a chat. For more information on the group or their new jerseys and riding kits, visit the Good Country Roadies Facebook page.

Go kart teen races to big victory in US Karratha teenager Nicholas Rowe has beaten out professional IndyCar and NASCAR drivers to become the first Australian winner at the prestigious SuperNationals go-karts race meet in Las Vegas. With more than 600 drivers from across the world competing, the SuperNationals is the largest karting meet in the world. It is also one of the most glamorous, raced over a 1.3km temporary circuit built within the grounds of the Las Vegas Rio AllSuites Hotel and Casino. However, 15-year-old Rowe shut out the pressure to become the first Australian and youngest ever driver to win the TaG Senior division. While not the most elite division at the SuperNationals, Rowe’s TaG Senior field included stars such as IndyCar and NASCAR driver AJ Allmendinger and 15-time Australian National Champion David Sera from Victoria. “[Winning is] the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life,” Rowe said. “When I was catching Dave [Sera], I thought to myself, ‘I’m catching one of the best drivers in the world’ and then I passed him – it was unreal.” Rowe led Sera home to secure a one-two finish for Australia. It was the second time in four years that Sera has finished runnerup at the event. Sera had started the race in pole position, with Allmendinger alongside him on the front row. After slotting into second place at the start, Sera moved his Australian-made Arrow kart into the lead on lap two. After a red flag stoppage due to a damaged track barrier, Sera led the way, with Gold Coast driver Ben Stewart in fifth and Rowe in sixth.

Rowe then dropped out of the top 10, before he recovered and began to meticulously work his way up the order to challenge for the lead with a handful of laps remaining, finally claiming the win ahead of Sera. “I dropped back to 13th after the restart at some stage and then clawed my way back. It’s just unreal,” Rowe said. “The first person I saw when I came into the in-grid was Dave who came running at me to give me a congratulatory hug, it was great to be able to share the moment with another Australian.” Other Australian racers at the SuperNationals included IndyCar star Will Power. With such a prestigious win under his belt, could Karratha’s Rowe be the next Mark Webber or Daniel Ricciardo?

Wickham trims the Kats’ whiskers to stay top of the table Wickham scored a resounding victory over the Karratha Kats in the third round of the West Pilbara Cricket Association’s oneday competition to cement their position on top of the table. Undefeated so far this season, Wickham’s mammoth total of 4/247 from 40 overs had the Karratha Kats under pressure before they even walked out to bat. And it showed. Though the Karratha Kats’ opening batsmen were able to post 60 runs between them, the team’s innings fell away quickly, eventually bowled out for a total of 169 in the 36th over. The 78-run victory puts Wickham in the box seat to make the December 14 grand final, with

two more rounds of the 40-over competition remaining. In other matches, the Dampier Taverners moved onto two wins and one loss for the season after Pegs Creek were able to field a team and forfeited the match. The Nickol Spaniards also moved onto two wins and one loss for the season after their strike bowler took 5/13 to have the Rec Club team crashing to a disappointing all-out for 62 runs by the 21st over. That gave the Spaniards a 95run victory after they earlier made 9/157 from their 40 overs. The Spaniards next meet Wickham in Wickham this Saturday, November 30, while the Kats host the Taverners at Millarrs Well and the Rec Club meet Pegs Creek.
