They also aim to use the site to provide on-thejob hospitality training to indigenous people and as a base to open complementary businesses. These include opening a branch of the NYFL-owned Roebourne general store to sell groceries to campers and tourists and a company that will offer tours in the Pilbara led by Aboriginal guides. Another potential source of income involves leasing out the mining accommodation camp on the site. And the Whim Creek pub is not the only famous Pilbara bar to have changed hands recently.

(Whim Creek pub) is on Ngarluma land and is culturally significant, but it is also an icon in the Pilbara, so it has been a shame to see it fall into non-use

Last month, the Yindjibarndi Aboriginal Corporation bought the 8000 sq m Victoria Hotel site in Roebourne with plans to redevelop the former bar into a mix of accommodation, commercial, residential and community spaces. “We think it is a great asset in a great location and we think the sky is the limit in terms of what we can turn that infrastructure into,” YAC chief executive officer Michael Woodley said. He said a concept design for the site would be given to YAC members for approval shortly. But with the hotel having played a role in creating serious social problems in Roebourne in the past, the concept design will not include any plans to reopen it as a venue selling alcohol, Mr Woodley said. For Mr Maloney, the move by indigenous groups to invest in Roebourne and the region is already creating exciting results. He said his not-for-profit group NYFL already owns many properties in Roebourne and Point Samson. It also runs maintenance and construction companies that engage with the resources industry as well as more community-focused plumbing, nursery and supermarket businesses. “We have been quite successful in an economic sense, and we are using those economic gains to invest in lands, buildings and long-term businesses, which are now providing long term jobs and careers for local people,” he said.

Two men with identifiable hairstyles are believed to be connected to a series of burglaries at a transport company in Karratha. Police are appealing to the public for any information after items were stolen from the company on Cowle Rd in the Karratha Industrial Estate between November 4 and December 10. Police are seeking two men over the crimes. The man pictured is about 25-35 years old, medium build with a beer belly and tattoos on both arms and on one or both lower legs. His hairstyle could be quite recognisable, as the pictures show he sports a mohawk with shaved sides and a rat’s tail at the rear. The other man is described as a white male 25-35 years of age with a slim build, a short ponytail and an earring in his left ear. Whim Creek pub is set to reopen its doors after Aboriginal investors agreed to pay $1.7 million for the historic hotel. The pub’s new joint venture owners, the Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation and the Ngarluma and Yindjibarndi Foundation Limited, plan to restore it as a function centre and tourist destination. NYFL chief executive officer Evan Maloney said reopening the pub would create jobs for Aboriginal people. “(Whim Creek pub) is on Ngarluma land and is culturally significant, but it is also an icon in the Pilbara, so it has been a shame to see it fall into nonuse,” he said. “We will be restoring [the pub] to what it was and will be running hospitality training courses and cultural tourism out of it so that there will be jobs and opportunities for our local Aboriginal people.” The pub’s sale comes as Pilbara indigenous groups increasingly use income generated from the mining boom to buy land and businesses in the region. First built in the 1800s, the Whim Creek pub is one of the most high-profile purchases yet by an indigenous group, having long been one of the Pilbara’s most famous landmarks and popular with visitors and locals alike. It has been closed since 2011 after mining company Venturex Resources acquired it as part of a larger purchase of the Whim Creek copper mine project in 2010.

Mr Maloney said he expected the pub to be profitable despite it having been closed for the past two years. He said the NAC and NYFL joint-venture partners will reopen its bar and renovate its accommodation and upstairs area to make it suitable for functions such as business conferences, weddings and parties.

CURTIN UNIVERSITY ADVERTORIAL

Disappointing ATAR doesn’t have to mean giving up on your uni dream The UniReady program can help you get into some of Curtin University’s courses, even if you didn’t get the required marks.

Take another route to university in 2014.

If you didn’t get the ATAR you wanted, the UniReady Enabling Program can help you qualify for entry into some of Curtin’s Health Sciences, Humanities or Curtin Business School undergraduate courses. This free program aims to develop your independent learning skills and prepare you for university study. It is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens and permanent residents. You can study UniReady online or complete it on campus during first semester. There is also an intensive five-week summer session; this is a good option if you are keen to get started on your chosen undergraduate course in the first semester of 2014. Siblings Fadi, Diana and Abdul Akle have all completed UniReady at different times. After finishing high school at Sevenoaks Senior College, Fadi, the eldest of the three, studied surveying at TAFE. When he found this didn’t suit his needs, Fadi joined UniReady. “I wanted to get into uni and Curtin’s UniReady program stood out as the most convenient path,” Fadi said. He successfully completed the program and was offered a place in Curtin Business School’s Bachelor of Commerce (Banking). “The program was a really good experience for me. Learning about referencing was the most useful part; you really need to know how to reference at uni! It was also helpful to gain organisational and study skills.” Fadi is now in his final year at Curtin, and plans to build his career in banking. Abdul went through UniReady after Fadi and is now in his second year of construction management, while Diana finished the program in 2012 and has just finished her first year of primary teaching. “I’ve always known I wanted to be a teacher,” Diana said. “I did work experience at primary schools during high school, but didn’t do any ATAR subjects. I knew about UniReady because of my brothers, so it was an obvious choice for me.” Diana valued the program’s attention to referencing and academic writing. “I was horrible at academic writing before UniReady.” she said. “The tutors were great, too. “Even though I did the program online, the tutors were always available to answer your emails and help you out.” Diana is looking forward to finishing her degree and can see herself teaching primary school children overseas. For further information about the UniReady Enabling Program, please contact Curtin Teaching and Learning on 9266 1000 or visit curtin.edu.au/ get-uniready.

Even if you don’t think you have the marks or qualifications, you could still get into university with UniReady - a FREE 13 week course that can be studied on campus or online. When you successfully complete UniReady, you’re guaranteed entry into many Curtin courses starting in Semester 2. There are also UniReady regional scholarships available, which assist with travel and living expenses. Follow a different route to uni with UniReady. January blusters in, rain, hail and shine It’s been an extreme welcome to 2014 for Pilbara residents, with everything from cyclonic weather, extreme heat and fires making an impact over the past three weeks. Last week, Pilbara residents watched cloud cover increase and storm potential grow due to a tropical low that formed north off the Northern Territory before crossing the coast and heading south west through the Kimberley. New Year’s Eve in the Pilbara saw Tropical Cyclone Christine dominate the skies. This category two system crossed the coast between Port Hedland and Karratha, with heavy rains and winds in excess of 130km/h around Hedland.

Shire of Roebourne chief executive officer Chris Adams said the clean-up effort has been huge. “Already we’ve seen community members being really proactive and helping out where they can and we’re encouraging residents to keep up the hard work and lend a hand where possible,” he said. In Roebourne the community pulled together to rebuild and clean-up the historical town. NYFL, NBAC and WMAC and other organisations sent teams to move cyclone debris from yards. “It was great to see everyone working as a single team toward the common goal of bringing normality back to the town of Roebourne as quickly as possible,” said Adrian Ellson, operations manager at NYFL. In Hedland, the public pools have been closed since the cyclone, some

It was great to see everyone working as a single team toward the common goal of bringing normality back to the town

Meanwhile, temperatures in the mid 40s blistered some Pilbara towns, such as Marble Bar which hit 45.5C last Monday. Paraburdoo’s high of 46C came a few days earlier, on January 9. While Perth and several eastern states have been experiencing their own share of catastrophic fire events, locations such as Karijini National Park in the Pilbara have also been the subject of ongoing fire warnings. In the Shire of Roebourne, the Wickham and Roebourne areas were hit hardest, and the aquatic centre and aerodrome are now closed with no scheduled reopening date. Clean-up crews have been working across the shire since the all-clear was given and have completed collections in Point Samson and Cossack. Collections in Wickham, Roebourne, Karratha and Dampier are well underway. To help with the large amount of debris left by Christine the shire engaged seven additional contractors and received support from the army, Dampier Port Authority, additional litter pickers and community volunteers.

areas of town had phone line issues and tree debris has meant the town is still completing household green rubbish collection. Port Hedland Mayor Kelly Howlett said residents who wish to be prepared for flooding can obtain free sandbags. “The Town of Port Hedland has a limited number of empty sandbags available for residents if required for future heavy rain events,” she said. “The empty sandbags are made of plastic which is more resistant to water damage.” Residents should call ahead on 9158 9741 before heading to the Town of Port Hedland depot at Cajarina Street in Wedgefield. Hedland resident Lee-Ann Cummins started up a Facebook page, ‘Hedland. Get Cyclone Ready’ dedicated to helping new residents to be better prepared for cyclonic weather and not feel embarrassed asking questions that might sound simple to others. “I didn’t want this to be a page that mocked questions that people asked ... (it’s) somewhere they can find information independently,” Ms Cummins said.

After temporary closures and building issues, the Wickham Police Station is set to close permanently following state and local government discussions. Members of the public wishing to make contact with the Roebourne Police Station for non-emergency matters can either visit the police station on Queen St, Roebourne or call 9182 1133. The Shire of Roebourne’s eastern corridor is set to benefit from a new Roebourne Districts SES Unit in Wickham, and construction the facility has already begun. The $2 million facility will be located in Wickham and includes offices and meeting rooms, specialised communications systems, enclosed storage facilities for equipment and vehicles as well as shower and kitchen facilities. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of May. Shire of Roebourne director of strategic projects and infrastructure Simon Kot said the new facility would substantially improve community safety and bolster the shire’s emergency response capability. “The Roebourne Districts SES Unit has been without a dedicated facility since 2011, so this has been a long time coming for our hardworking emergency service volunteers and the community,” Mr Kot said. “The new SES unit will not only improve the safety for residents in Wickham, Point Samson and Roebourne but it will have the ability supplement other SES units and significantly enhance emergency services for the whole region.” The new Roebourne Districts SES Unit is supported by the Shire of Roebourne, Rio Tinto and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services.

Roebourne district to be named Karratha City By Ben Leahy The Shire of Roebourne is set for a name change after councillors voted to change the district’s name to Karratha City Council. Shire president Peter Long said the change would help the Pilbara district grow into the future, but other councillors and residents have voiced strong opposition because they see it as a break with the past. “With the sixth largest gross regional product in Australia and the second largest in regional Australia, our district has become a major economic hub for the region and Australia and city status appropriately signifies our transformation from a mining town to established city of the north,” Mr Long said. “Building our profile through city status is likely to attract more investment.” Mr Long was one of seven councillors to vote in favour of the change, while four voted against it. More than 50 shire residents also attended the December council meeting to present petitions and engage in a public debate for and against the proposal. Supporting the change, the Karratha and Districts Chamber of Commerce and Industry said granting city status to Karratha would help market the region. It said that the WA state government had invested heavily

in turning Karratha into a major regional city and that the town’s population had grown by almost 20 per cent between 2007-2012. A move by the shire to grant city status to Karratha would help continue this growth, it said. “This leadership will encourage business confidence and optimism and provide increased opportunities for regional growth and investment,” the KDCCI said in its submission. Many opponents of the change were opposed to the name “Karratha City”, seeing it as a break with the 150-year association of the region with the name Roebourne. Feedback from residents in Dampier was that with the lack of services in their town, it was not worthy of being granted city status. The Point Samson Community Association, meanwhile, was worried that a name change to Karratha City would associate the entire region with mining and the resources industry and make it harder for the coastal town to market itself as a tourist destination. With the name change and city status now approved by council, an application is set to be sent to the Minister for Local Government and considered by the Local Government Advisory Board who will decide the final outcome. The process is expected to take up to six months.

Despite concerns from some residents, the Shire of Roebourne will change its name to Karratha City.

Karratha residents are closer to flying direct to international destinations after the Shire of Roebourne council voted to approve an upgrade of the terminal at the town’s airport. The upgrade will give airlines the choice of running international routes through Karratha airport if they choose and will provide more space for retail and cafe outlets. Shire of Roebourne President Peter Long said the shire will now seek tenders for construction of the terminal in the coming months. “We have the second busiest airport in Western Australia so it’s really important for us to provide a high level of service that users would expect of any major transport hub,” Cr Long said. “The terminal upgrades will significantly improve airport facilities

“The upgrade is also designed with future expansions in mind and has been planned in such a way that can support continual growth without the need to abandon the existing terminal in the short to medium term.” The business plan for the terminal upgrade included four scenarios based on rising and falling numbers of passengers using Karratha airport in the coming decade. Shire staff said the final plans for the terminal upgrade relied on the most likely scenario in which passenger numbers were expected to remain largely the same up until 2022-23. “At the predicted passenger growth rates the upgrades will provide sufficient capacity for the next 10-15 years,” Cr Long added. Tenders are expected to go out this month, with construction planned to begin in April.

Many readers will have spent the holidays relaxing at a beachside getaway, a wine region in the South West or a great fishing spot in the Kimberly and over the years many people have bought holiday homes in these places. Today, holiday homes are being bought as far apart as Exmouth and Esperance. It all depends on the buyer’s budget, allowable travel time and strategy behind the purchase. The ideal holiday home for most people is one that is always available for short stays, but this is costly for people who need to take out a mortgage. Holiday homes are not the inexpensive country options they once were, particularly on the coast. But these days an increasing number of buyers

are choosing to combine the purchase of a holiday home with long-term investment plans. This is possible because many favoured holiday locations have developed viable rental markets with local tenants leasing properties for extended periods, often beyond the summer holidays. Where demand for rental accommodation is seasonal, such as fishing towns, windsurfing spots and agricultural areas, there is a greater likelihood of vacancies for rental properties outside the peak holiday or industry period. However, the rentals are normally much higher in properties leased for short periods, which can partly offset the loss of rental income when the place is vacant.

The benefit of this strategy is the owner can use the property in the off season. Another option for holidayhome buyers is to buy a unit in a resort development. Some resort operators will guarantee a rental income for a fixed period. In many cases the buyer is acquiring a share of a managed investment scheme, which includes a stake in the total income and expenses incurred by the resort. Either way, the most important consideration when buying a holiday home is to set aside the emotional reactions and approach the purchase with a clear understanding of the real value of the property, its ongoing costs and likely rental income. “In doing so I was intrigued and came across the fascinating story of a man’s journey to personal discovery. “He’s one of the most prolific songwriters of our time, with a great catalogue of songs and equally inspiring stories to go along with it. I thought it would make a great show.” Coggan said Stevens’ songs are timeless with a message of peace and understanding and that those messages are still relevant in our world today. “These songs still clearly reach out and touch an audience so as a performer, that’s a gift. “The underlying theme of our show is we all have that ability to make changes in our lives and I think Cat Stevens is a great example of that.” Coggan said he often relates to Stevens’ songs, citing Father and Son and Oh Very Young as his personal favourites. “I certainly can relate to this man and some of the things that have happened in his life. Not everything, but certainly some of the connections are very strong.”

Darren Coggan, an exceptional musician in his own right, will be touring through Western Australia’s north with Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story in April. The gig is more than just music, with a theatrical story woven through the set list telling the incredible life story of music legend Cat Stevens, known these days as Yusuf Islam. At the height of his career in the 1970s, Stevens had everything a musician could want – charttopping melodies, money and fame. But suddenly he took his last bow and “quit” music. Coggan traces Stevens’ path with Peace Train. “I would often cover Cat Stevens in my own shows and it was those songs people would come up to me and talk about and it happened so frequently that just out of curiosity I started researching the life of Cat Stevens,” Coggan said.

e h t g in r b s r e h Brot y a D z O r o f s e blu By Tamara Binamat In true Aussie spirit, South Hedland will be hosting blues, roots and country musicians The Blue Shaddy Duo at the town’s Australia Day celebrations next Sunday.

GIG DATES Sunday, January 26 Port Hedland, Jim and Belly form the Blue Shaddy Duo Friday February 21 Newman, full Blue Shaddy band

The full band will then grace Newman in February, bringing their rock’n’roll best to the Pilbara. Blue Shaddy is described as energetic and powerful, and their musical harmonies are sure to be strong considering founding members Jim Graham (Belly) and Sandy McClelland are family. Brothers Jim and Belly used to share a small house on the

family farm in Kelleberrin and with television banned from the house, the two would sit at the kitchen table and trade Hound Dog Taylor and Sonnie and Brownie licks nightly. The duo soon met Sandy Naughton, the next Blue Shaddy recruit, and eventually Jim and Sandy married. With the trio a driving force behind Blue Shaddy, the band’s drummer Kramer is their “fourth wheel”, a longtime friend who played his first gig with them at age nine. The band has played on impressive stages at festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, West Coast Blues and Roots Festival and Blues at Bridgetown. Blue Shaddy recently released their fourth album Across the Road.

Indigenous students embrace uni life Last month, eight indigenous students from the Pilbara travelled more than 1500km to Perth to participate in the Edith Cowan University Showcase Week, held from December 8 to 13. The week brought together regional and metro students and provided them with opportunities to explore their career options and encourage them to consider applying for university. The students experienced life on a university campus while attending sessions on business and law, leadership, economics, public speaking and marketing. They also spent a day at Kurongkurl Katitjin facility, which provides support for indigenous learning. Daphne Trevurza, from The Smith Family in Karratha, said the trip was incredibly successful and really opened the student’s eyes to postschool options available to them. “Before we left on the trip only one of the students wanted to attend university – since returning five of the students are aspiring to go to university and are applying for further study,” Daphne said. “It’s really helped their confidence, and has been

Jamie-Lee Angel Hair December 29 Wayne, Angie, big sister Jasmine and big brothers Jacob and Joshua would like to announce the safe arrival of the newest member of their family, Jamie-Lee Angel Hair. Jamie-Lee was born at 1.31am weighing 6lbs 15oz and measuring 49cm. A special thank you to midwife Amanda and the Hedland Health Campus – we couldn’t have done it without you!

Surviving a holiday road trip The car is packed, the kids are loaded in the back and seat belts are on, then you hear the dreaded cry: “Are we there yet?” and you’ve barely left the driveway. Sound familiar? The car trip to your destination can be the dreaded part of your holiday but with a few tips for surviving the road trip, it doesn’t have to be. For many people, a holiday is a once-a-year treat that can’t come soon enough. At times spending hours in the car is inevitable, but it doesn’t have to be a chore. With a little bit of preparation your journey will fly by and you’ll be sitting by the beach or river before you know it. What are your tips for entertaining the kids on the big drive through the North West? Let us know at news@ pilbaraecho.com.au.

The trip was made possible through The Smith Family’s Partnership with Edith Cowan University. The

Smith Family is Australia’s largest provider of education support for disadvantaged students and their families.

HOW TO MAKE THE DRIVE BAREABLE Pack a collection of your favourite tunes Music will make the time fly by. Put on your favourite song and get lost in the natural scenery on the way. Pack the kids’ CDs along with a few of your own favourites and have a sing-a-long. Don’t forget to download the lyrics before the trip so you’ll never be caught mumbling through a verse. Make regular stops Pulling into a rest stop breaks up your long journey and allows everyone to stretch their legs. It will also give you a chance to stop at any landmarks along the way; the perfect opportunity to take a few snaps for the family album. Each region is different so taking a break is a great chance to explore some of the local attractions and pick up a few souvenirs. Fuel up Not just the car – it’s important to keep hungry tummies satisfied on a long trip to avoid cranky kids and grumpy

adults. Pack some healthy snacks that everyone can share and keep plenty of water handy. As the weather heats up and the shops become fewer and farther apart you’ll be glad you packed enough for everyone. Brain teasers I-spy is a great way to keep the little ones entertained while older kids might enjoy brain teaser game books, crossword puzzles or sketch books. Games are great for passing the time on long trips with some family bonding thrown in. Catch a movie Some cars now have built in DVD players and portable ones are always an option too. While you don’t want kids to watch movies the entire trip, they do come in handy. Before you leave, buy a few movies the kids have never seen before and they’ll be excited about watching something new, plus you’ll get at least an hour and a half of peace and quiet.

Michael Peter Hyde was welcomed into the world by his parents Catherine and Garrick Hyde and big brother Tom on November 6 at Mercy Hospital Mount Lawley. Michael weighed 6lb 15oz at birth.

Mountain bikers get in early for first ride of the new year By Tristan Wood-Hill and Ben Leahy The Christmas break has not slowed down Karratha’s mountain bikers as, earlier this month, 16 locals set their alarm clocks for the wee hours of the morning to take part in the town’s first ever morning race. Round three of the Burrup Mountain Bike Club’s Social Summer Series kicked off at 6.30am on January 5 and took riders around a 6km loop made up of 50 per cent 4WD trail and 50 per cent single track. And even though it was held early, the course’s steep climb certainly had heart’s pounding in temperatures already reaching 30C. Unsurprisingly, several riders headed to the nearby Leisureplex swimming pool at the end of the race to cool down and grab a coffee. With the Summer Series being held to give new riders a chance to try out mountain biking, there are no prizes or awards given out to the winners of the events, just a slap on the back and some friendly banter. Karratha mountain biking has really gone to a new level in the past two years with the number

of riders growing exponentially. There were a huge number of ladies, in particular, taking part in races last year and 2014 is set to

be even bigger. The club already has more than 100 Mountain Biking Australia members registered, even though racing is

Taekwondo club kickstart 2014 with major raffle By Tim Turner and Ben Leahy

As usual a full season of races will be held, including the prestigious Dr Baynton’s six-hour event in July. Last year’s Dr Baynton was registered as an official race on the Single Track Minds endurance series and consequently drew a number of riders from Perth, who went home praising the Karratha trails. No doubt, it is set to do so again, so get ready as a solo rider or as a team to take part in 2014. Also back will be the popular Dirt Masters category for children under 12, which is a great way to introduce them to the sport. For newcomers to the sport, the club also now has three dual suspension mountain bikes that can be borrowed and used in races. They say cycling is the new golf and that seems right given how many people you see on bikes these days. So if you like the outdoors and a bit of a thrill, come along to one of our events this year - you won’t be disappointed and will soon realise how addictive this sport is. All events are posted on the revamped Burrup Mountain Bike Club website and Facebook page. For information, see http:// home.spin.net.au/burrupmb/ Home.html.

Triathletes back in training for February race By Heather Smith

Jason from the Pilbara Motor Group (left) with raffle first prize winner Adrian White and Taekwondo club members Tore Turner and Peter Wyn to thank local residents for their generosity and support, given that it was a tough year economically to hold a major raffle. He said the club also wishes to thank Trevor and Mary Wyn for their dedication in selling raffle tickets as well as major sponsors the Pilbara Motor

Group, Smirkey’s Sport and Pilbara Photographics. Hedland Taekwondo training resumes at the JD Hardie Centre in the second week of February with Tim confident that the club will be able to improve on its 2014 results. For more information contact Tim Turner on 0427 093 766.

While Karratha and Dampier’s triathletes have enjoyed a wellearned break from racing this Christmas period, training has now resumed in earnest for earnest for most competitors. Race three of the Nickol Bay Triathlon Club series is set to be held on January 9 in Dampier with many athletes looking to improve their times from race two. Race two was held on December 15 with 24 competitors hitting the water for the swim leg, which kicked off the event. Calm conditions on the water saw some good swim times posted with Holly Vernon continuing her trend of being the first athlete out of the water in the beginner-level Enticer category of racing. Holly then followed up her swim with strong bike and run legs to win the Enticer category, closely followed by Nino Antonucci, who was home on holidays from boarding school. In the kid’s race, Joshua Vernon and Boston Geikie put on an amazing race to go toe to toe and eventually come home equal first. In the short course category, Nick Muller had a great swim and ride only to be run down by Kenny McGonnell not far from the finish line.

Adrian Whiting, meanwhile, had a small spill at the start of the bike leg, but got straight back in the saddle to finish with a great ride. Jason Geikie continued his fine form to win the Long Course with Peter O’Neill coming in for a strong second placing, having taken part in the race straight after finishing night shift at his work. Well done to all competitors. More information on race three at Dampier Palms on February 9 can be found at nickolbaytriclub.com.

The Hedland Taekwondo Club are looking to kickstart an even more successful 2014 with the completion of their major raffle last month. The club’s martial artists last year dominated the WA State Championships before moving on to the Australian Championships where they achieved encouraging results. With the help of the raffle funds, the club will now start back into training in February with the aim of bringing home more gold from the 2014 nationals to be held mid year. And the young taekwondo champs are not the only ones grinning after a successful 2013. Hedland resident Alan White took home a Toyota Hilux ute valued around $25,000 after he claimed first prize in the club’s major raffle. Alan was initially speechless with shock when told in December he was the winner of the Hilux provided by the Pilbara Motor Group in Port Hedland. When he eventually recovered his voice, he said he was rapt to win the car, especially because he had never won anything in his life – not even a chook raffle. Hedland Taekwondo president Tim Turner said the club was pleased with the amount of funds raised from the raffle. He said the club wished

not set to begin until April, and there is a bigger committee on board, who are flush with great ideas for the upcoming season.

Roadies launch beginner rides By Kim Sparks and Ben Leahy Cycling is the new golf. At least, it seems like it is given the evergrowing popularity of Karratha cycling group, the Good Country Roadies. Having had a successful 2013 with regular weekday and Saturday morning road rides, the group is now composed of a healthy mix of experienced and inexperienced riders and is always on the lookout for more. To help bring those newcomers to the sport, the Good Country Roadies earlier this month launched “beginner rides” on Wednesday and Friday mornings. Regular rider Kim Sparks said these rides give newcomers the chance to take part in a sport that is both friendly and competitive. “The daunting task of riding in a bunch should not put anyone off,” he said. “We offer training tips and have a mentor system in place [to help new riders adjust] during rides on Wednesday and Friday mornings.” And don’t let the sight of lycra hot pants distract you from the joys of the sport either. “To many folk, the sight of a bunch of grown men and women wearing skin tight lycra clothing and riding high tech bikes at

ungodly hours in the morning conjures up images of craziness,” Kim said. “But dig a little deeper … and you’ll meet a bunch of healthy minded people, hell bent on competitiveness [mixed with] socialising.” Kim said the sport was especially fun because it allows riders of all levels to ride together. The Good Country Roadies even have a regular rider, who has competed at the Commonwealth Games. Five of the group’s more

seasoned campaigners have also gone to Adelaide to take part in an amateur road ride that runs in parallel to the Santos Tour Down Under. As Australia’s version of the Tour de France, the Tour Down Under this year features professional riders, such as Cadel Evans and Richie Porte. “Male and female, kids and grandparents, beginners and National Champions, they all ride as one [in road riding, which is] quite a unique environment

compared with other sports,” Kim said. “To ride alongside a national champion or successful competitors from Ironman Australia competitions allows you to gauge your own ability, and, at the same time, encourage and assist the relative newcomers to this team environment. It is very satisfying.” Kim said most Good Country Roadies ride three to four times a week with the 6am Saturday morning road ride the highlight of the week for many.

Safety is also a key concern. Kim said the group maintain an awareness on the road to give vehicles, especially trucks room to pass with minimal intereference. And as much as the group is focused on helping and encouraging each other, it is evident there is also strong competition among the members. The Saturday morning ride includes sprint points for the sprinters, while stronger riders often attack the group by trying to ride solo off the front. The ultimate prize for such achievements is the weeklong bragging rights that commence from the moment the group sits down to its after-ride coffee at the shopping centre. It also leads to great rivalry with the tall poppy within the group inevitably getting tagged each week, similar to Chris Judd in his peak. To come along for a ride or to follow the antics of the club, check out the Good Country Roadies Facebook page or watch this space for regular weekly updates. And with the growing popularity of road cycling, who knows, we may even be in the process of training up the next Cadel Evans right here in Karratha.
